We went to Messob for lunch for the first time on Mother's Day and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The food was delicious and the service was warm and inviting. Would definitely recommend.

my favorite ethiopian restaurant!! i come here every chance i get, for quality food, kind service, and overall homely vibes. it's a small restaurant and the same familiar faces each time. i highly recommend the sambusas. then are so hot and flakey, and the green sauce pairs perfectly either way it. you can't go wrong with the meat or veggie. i also share the veggie combo with another and it is more than enough food for a meal. messob is so close to my heart.

A friend of mine recommended this place and I've been back 3 times in the last 2 months! The lady in the front is incredible and the environment she creates makes me feel Im eating out of her kitchen. I had the meat combination and it was delicious! I was pretty hungry so I wouldn't recommend that specific plate if you had some snacks prior to eating. The bread is amazing and the seasoning in the food makes everything so flavorful. Price is decent for what it is. If I'm in the area again I won't doubt to come back here!

Our family loves Ethiopian food and we're excited to try Messob on Piedmont. A few patrons decorated the restaurant enjoying conversation and their meals. From the Ethiopian spiced tea to alicha to injera we enjoyed everything. There were no leftovers, thanks to our refills on the injera basket. Flavors were authentic - not at all subdued to please the American palette, which we fully appreciated.

Small family restaurant, fresh food, fast service, and delicious. We ordered 3 items and the Zambia's appetizer and finished it all with a second serving of injera. They also have a few tables outside for outdoor eating.

Found this little place by accident Very nice smiling service Good food - they gave me the amazing red sauce once i asked for it Lots of veggie options as predicted The place could have used nice music and could be a bit better decorated but it is perfect when you want a good solid lunch!

Vegetarian Combination with Buticha and Mushroom

Ordered the vegetarian combo with everything! Portion size was amazing to share for two people. We left quite full and very happy. We also split an order of the sambussa - they were super kind to let us do 2 veggie and 1 meat. Superb customer service and very accommodating. My friend the meat eater (as she's known in these parts) also ordered the Alicha Firfir. She's Ethiopian and said in total it was the probably the best Ethiopian food she's had in a US restaurant. Quite the praise so definitely check it out! Everything from the apps to the entrees to the coffee was really delicious.

Food was very good. We also had the tej. The honey wine was very sweet. I highly recommend vegetarian dishes when eating Ethiopian food. Service was good. Ambiance is a small restaurant with an outdoor area. I would eat here again.

Veggie combo (to go order)

Friendly and consistent service. We order for pickup and take out on a regular basis and are never disappointed. The restaurant is on the smaller size but it is never too crowded in there. Great place for little ones, they are always very kind and patient with our daughter. We usually get the veggie combo (my fav, so flavorful) but have tried some chicken and lamb dishes that were great. They are also generous with the injera which our little one loves!

I have been to Enssaro when it was along the lake several times and was glad to see a lively restaurant take over the old sushi boat place. The food was good, especially the meatballs. I ordered an NA cocktail and it was excellent. We sat at the bar and unfortunately, the service at the was not only terrible, it was openly hostile. They never took our food order, the busboy took our food order because the waiter saw us waiting for more than 20 minutes. When they finally took our drink order they didn't even look at us. We were going to order another drink, but they stood at the far corner looking away from us with their arms crossed. We wondered if we did something wrong. It almost seemed like they were avoiding our gaze on purpose. The new bartender who was learning the ropes looked at us sheepishly and apologetically, but didn't take our order. We closed out as soon as we could and left. It's too bad because the ambiance in the rest of the restaurant seemed fun.

A delicious home-cooked Ethiopian feast for two!…read more Came by on a Sunday night and it was pretty quiet. We were the only people dining in, which was honestly such a vibe. We ordered a meat and veggie combo platter for 2 + a serving of Bozena Shiro (chickpea flour simmered with beef), and an order of Selit (Sesame Seed Smoothie) to drink. It was my first time having Bozena Shiro and Selit! The Selit came out first while we were waiting for our combo platter to come out. They asked what sugar level I prefer which was nice. I went with light sugar and it was perfect! It reminded me a lot of a sesame latte, but they said there was no milk in it so I believe it was just water blended with sugar and sesame seeds. It was delicious and had a naturally savory/toasty aspect to it as well. The platter came out and wow it looked fantastic. They gave a generous amount of injera with it as well. At other locations, I always find myself ordering extra injera, but instead we had a few bites leftover! Everything was delicious, the Kik Alicha (golden split peas) are always my favorite and they definitely delivered here as well! I really need to start ordering Ethiopian food a la carte, because the Bozena Shiro was fantastic. I would've never known about it if we didn't add it to our platter! Savory, tender meat, thick consistency on the sauce/stew. The injera here is a bit too dense for my persona liking. I prefer the fluffier style injera, but the flavor was still spot on!

First, the critique:…read more We ordered the coffee ceremony, because we have experienced the coffee ceremony at another Ethiopian restaurant and really enjoyed it. However...the coffee ceremony at Cafe Romanat made us giggle and scratch our heads. They first placed a steaming bowl of coffee beans on our table, then incense, then a bowl of popcorn, and then a pot of coffee. Nobody explained the significance of anything that was placed on our table. I was...confused and amused. Now, the great stuff: the food was probably the best Ethiopian food I have ever had. We ordered chicken tibs, shiro wat, and sambusas. All were absolutely delicious! I appreciate that all the food was served piping hot (I have been served cold lentils and vegetables often at Ethiopian restaurants and it isn't as appetizing). The sambusa in particular stood out - piping hot, flavorful lentils inside, tasty dipping sauces. The injera was generously portioned and deliciously fermented. Service and ambience were both terrific (despite the puzzling coffee ceremony). I'd definitely come back!

Every time I smelled it, I told myself that I have to try it. When I finally stopped in, I was not disappointed. It was flavorful, comforting, and it actually tasted like Thai food a bit. I honestly don't even know the names of the dishes I tried, but I enjoyed every bite. This first visit has definitely made me excited to come back and explore more of the menu. I can't wait to try my next dish!

I've ate at almost every Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant in Oakland and in Berkeley and unfortunately, this one did not impress me. The food came out cold and flavorless. Outside of the greens, it tasted like the food had been prepared days ago. The injera also did not have that sour/ bitter taste that other authentic restaurants have. What I will say is that the customer service was good. The employee who took my order was friendly. The restaurant itself is small, but right in between a smoothie shop and a coffee location that I believe they own as well. I would definitely recommend going next door and getting the coconut mint smoothie. It's really good.
