Love, love, love this place. Sutter Creek has seen it's share of turnover in the last few years, and this lovely little shop is one of the up sides of an economy that shook a little town up. The owner is a sweet, knowledgeable and humble cheese enthusiast, and her little spot in town is now a must-stop for me and my travel buddy. I was a little sad when I came in this time around and didn't see her shining smile from the get-go, but was met with delightful surprise when we got to know the new counter-staff who were just as lovely as the owner. I suggest coming in here after you taste (and buy!) some great local wine, and pick up some pairings. These girls know what they're doing: tell them what you're looking for, or pairing with, and they will not disappoint! They have a great range of cheeses from local sources, as well as a nice variety of foreign selections. Count on lots of samples, a friendly and knowledgeable staff and fair prices. I wandered into this cute little shop excited to purchase some cheese to enjoy with my date. The gentleman working there was already assisting a group of three ladies so we waited patiently. He offered a sample when we first arrived but after that, not a word. We stood at the cheese case with crackers and some cheese waiting for him to return from the wine counter so we could pick out some other cheeses. He did not so much as even look at us while we waited. He and the ladies seemed to be engaging in some friendly banter and we continued to just stand and wait. After approximately 10 minutes or more we decided to put our selections back and just leave. I could not believe the service in this shop. I do understand working by yourself is hard but I know after working in the service industry for over 20+ years, it is ESSENTIAL to be attentive to ALL of your guests. If you can't handle a party of 3 ladies and a couple and you run a shop, you're clearly headed for trouble. And if that's not AWFUL enough dealing with snide comments from the 3 time monopolizing ladies and the gentleman not even batting an eyelash upon our leaving was just the cheese on the cracker. I went to Sutter Creek with a few family members over the weekend and the first shop I noticed was the Cheese Shoppe. I wasn't sure if it was a restaurant or store but we walked down the road and saw a few shops and the cheese shoppe was actually our last stop. I really wanted to go here because my boyfriend LOVES cheeses and I thought it might be an interesting place to get him something from my journeys. This was by far the best customer service I have had ANYWHERE. The cheeses were so good and I bought a few cheeses, bacon jam, and some crackers. I know my boyfriend will love it. This place is amazing. I am from southern California and I just don't see people as devoted to their jobs as up in Sutter Creek, especially the cheese shop. If you really like cheese, this place is for you and you should make sure you don't miss it if you come to town. Under the previous owner and founder, the customer service was terrific if a little slow at times as it's small and can get crowded fast. It may have slipped a bit since she left, but it's still pretty great when I go there. Of course, I don't take other food or drink in there, or ask for seconds on the free samples and haven't broken anything yet. Part of the experience depends on who else is in there with you. I always wonder about people who say they don't like cheese. It's one thing for your body to reject cheese and another to just not like it. I don't understand the latter. I LOVE CHEESE and was so happy to come across the Sutter Creek Cheese Shoppe while visiting the area. I've since been back once more because the shop was so busy on a Saturday that I was unable tor each the counter. So, I went back on a weekday and was pleasantly treated to some fabulous cheeses. I could have stayed there for hours tasting all of their different cheeses, but held back. If you're a Brie lover, I highly recommend their cows milk brie (that's not the actual name, but that's what it is) because it is the creamiest brie I have ever tasted. My friend went home with that and Wensleydale with cranberries (good for salads and sandwiches-very Thanksgiving-y). I bought a goats milk triple creme brie, which was also delicious. The women working there are very helpful and are more than willing to give you multiple samples. So, if you're in the Sutter Creek area, stop by. If not, take a day trip and check out the shop and the surrounding areas. It's definitely worth it. read more

So awesome!! We had done two days of wine tasting and were beyond ecstatic to do a cheese tasting. The hostess (I fail to remember her name, shame on me!) was genuinely fantastic! Not pushy at all but enthusiastic with helping up find cheeses we would like. And, she was right on the money. We walked away with a bag full of cheese - and the prices were completely reasonable! I was expecting a total of over $80 but it was less than $30. Fun experience if you're into cheese. read more

Miller Wine Works recently moved into their Cheese Shoppe on Main Street and that was simply genius! Highly recommend the wine and cheese tasting, then do some more cheese tasting in the back. We especially liked the Harvest Blanc with Honey Bee cheese. Robin helped with cheese tasting. After tasting some wine on the main st of Sutter Creek - the next logical stop is the Cheese Shop. What I really like about this place is that you can taste any cheese before you buy it. The woman who waited on us really knows her cheeses. She quickly discerned that my companion and I have very different tastes, and she tried to bring us to a place where we'd both be happy. After several tastings we settled on three cheeses including a triple creme washed rind, a blue, and Two Sister gruyere. We also picked up duck pastrami from The Farm Table in Placerville: it was amazing! So glad they carry so many local products. Rancho Gordo beans on the shelves as well. We will be back! read more

Not worth the $12/pp 5 tastings. VERY small pour and a pea sized bit of soft cheese which ranged from fair to blagh! Very pushy to join their wine club which were just ok. Better off going to the Lodi cheese shop. read more

June 5, 2011 Took a ride to Sutter Creek to the cheese shop today, bought some Mt. Tam and fig crackers....couldn't wait to get home an enjoy my goodies .The cheese tasted OLD, and crackers were STALE...Guess I still have to go to the San Francisco to get Fresh cheese and yummy crackers........Nice Try Sutter Creek Cheese Shop, but you need to be on your FRESH game when it comes to Food......... read more

Holy cow! This place hasn't gone downhill, it has plummeted off of a cliff. This used to be a staple of my Sutter Creek experience. It was so nice to buy some cheese and crackers to accompany the wine I would surely ingest. No more. The knowledgeable French cheesemonger has been replaced by a far less knowledgeable person who also happens to be pretty stingy with the samples. The owner/manager is about as rude as a person can be without being called outside. He has absolutely no idea about customer service and seemed to resent the fact that we were in there dropping 60+ dollars on cheese. I doubt that we will be back. read more

We did not have any males helping us and it appears that's where all the complaints are surrounding. We had amazing customer service. My InLaws, my husband and I, and my two daughters were all given samples of whatever we wanted. It was too much to choose from!! We are actually on our way there today from Modesto just to pick up cheese!! read more

I have been looking forward to going to sutter creek to go to this place for a while.. The whole reason why I went to sutter creek was to try the different cheeses and buy some. Before I walked in I had bought a hot chocolate. I took one sip out of it. And walked into this cheese shoppe. My family was with me as well. As I approached the counter. I noticed the lady giving my family cheese and not me, I asked her if I can try the cheese she was giving away to taste. She which her name was Kim miller. Said " I can not let you taste the cheese since you have coffee . I walked out and was so mad, my mom even said to her " I think my daughter got her feelings hurt" this lady named Kim had no response. I always look forward to going to this place. I will no longer come here. And I will def spread the word. This lady Kim miller was the rudest person, my mom and family was mad as well. Don't go here !!!!' read more

I am giving two stars due to the service. The wine was not bad. The cheeses they had are excellent. We had a very nice young man help us at the cheese counter. If all we had done was experience this young man and the cheeses, we would have been really happy and given 5*. We did the wine tasting.....the guy behind the counter seemed miffed that he had to serve us. The wine pours were VERY cheap, barely enough to do more than one sip. The cheese pairings were nice but the amount they gave you to try with the wine was tiny....like pinky finger nail sized tiny. $12 for a wine cheese pairing with a guy who was almost rude made us all walk out with a bad taste for the place. Again, the cheese was excellent and the young man working back there was great. We spent about $750 in wines over the weekend at different place and did not buy any here due to service alone. read more

We were referred to the cheese shop by several people and walked there from our B&B (easy walk from just about anywhere in Sutter Creek). What a great break from wine tasting (although they do have wine tasting there too)! We must have tasted about 30 cheeses, and they give you a card so you can take notes. Tasting is free and they are more than happy to let you taste everything they have for sale. The staff seems very knowledgeable and was able to tell us the differences in how each cheese was made. We ended up buying 4 cheeses and spending $20, which is inexpensive for the amount that we got. I highly recommend anyone passing through or staying in Sutter Creek try this shop. They sell fresh french bread too! read more
