A friend and I were in the area and stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. They were relatively busy. We sat at the bar (to cheer on the Lions as they had small TVs over the sushi bar). Sushi Zen fits its name, relaxed environment while maintaining lovely decor. The service was fantastic. Our service Dov, was just the right level of friendly and engaging without ever being too much. He seemed to appear at exactly the right time. We order ginger salads, miso soup, and three rolls to split. The miso soup was a bit more flavorful than I've had at of restaurants, and we really liked it. The special California and the Alaska were the same as other good sushi places. My friend wanted to try the no name roll, which was baked, I didn't realize before ordering. I did not like it, but I am also not a fan of baked sushi, there was a sauce similar to a hot sauce on it I did not like. It was also too many flavors happening. Busy. Make a reservation. I followed Chef Nobu here but he has now left a few years ago. Still good however, the chef surprise is up to the head chef, which since Nobu left, is typically a lot of cooked, fried rolls and apps. The chef surprise has always been a nice blend of raw, rolls and feature apps. Still very good but not my cuppa. Great place to appease the whole family. They are not just a sushi joint. They have a good size dining room with great waitstaff though they are usually busy. There are specials each night so look up the list and enjoy martini Monday or half off bottles of wine. Came for early dinner with friends and family. We had 8 people, thus made a reservation in advance - it was a good thing. We came on a Sunday, the place was super busy and unfortunately this made our overall experience bit disappointing. The service was slow, hard to get hold of our server to get refills on water and tea... the food all came out at different times.... Food: - The bulgogi was 5 out of 5, definitely would recommend this. - The rolls were decent but nothing to write home about. I'll give them credit for having so many roll options; however as far as the taste goes, it's just ok. - sashimi, I would rate it 4 out of 5, they were tasty and fresh. I went with a la carte sashimi order - fresh tuna, white tuna, yellowtail, scallops, sweet shrimp. Friend ordered a la carte as well, also added fatty tuna (mkt price)... it looked great, get it if you can. - Nama Wasabi - if you never had fresh wasabi, then order this and try it.; extra cost but worth it. Take some and add it to your sashimi, dip it in soy sauce and enjoy. Do not add the fresh wasabi to the soy sauce, use the standard wasabi they give you! Service - I saw 12+ folks working the floor, of which I noticed 5 of them were working the cashier area - not sure why, but they seemed to know their roles around there.... however they need to come up with a new play to serve the customers. They should have a runner for drinks, refilling the water, tea, etc., and a food runners. Maybe they do this already, but didn't see that during our visit. Overall, bulgogi was excellent, worth trying the fresh wasabi but importantly the conversations were the best. For now, three stars for overall experience. Hopefully, next time I visit, things will have improved. read more

Sushi was good but not good enough for the poor service. For starters people that were sat after us were putting in their orders before we did. When we were finally able to order I ordered a few rolls of sushi and my boyfriend ordered a beef bulgogi bowl. Sushi came out and we thought his beef bowl was going to come out shortly after. Our waitress, didn't catch her name but receipt says our server was Nola, came by to check on us after we took the first bite of sushi but wasn't to be seen again. 40 minutes go by and the sushi is almost gone still no bowl or sight of our waitress. When I was able to finally flag her down to ask about it she said she was going to go check on it. At this point we had been there for probably an hour and we were ready to go so we just canceled the order and took the check. When she dropped off the check she said "sorry I forgot to ask if you wanted it" What do you mean ask if we wanted it? We ordered it. Even if it wasn't finished at the restaurant we would have taken it home. Between the poor service and complete negligence we experienced I would not recommend this place read more
