Enjoyed our visit to Sushi Train. The conveyer belt of plates is a fun concept. The food was good and reasonably priced.

My colleagues and I had lunch here and the service was excellent and the rolls were good. A little pricy but not outrageous. There was a nice variety and plenty plates to choose. The fish was fresh and the sauces were good. They had some items that I would be surprised if anyone actually took but they where there if you wanted them. It has been a long time since I visited a train style sushi place and it was a great place to try different rolls. read more

It was fun for like 10 mins but then I got a headache and had like sushi FOMO--kept turning my head cuz felt like I was gonna miss something good!! It was very distracting Sushi was alright--basic, good enough, nothing wow. But you just keep eating cuz it has a "buffet" vibe but remember it's priced per PLATE. A fun thing if you've never done it. Fav plates: salmon sashimi, crab and cucumber salad, tuna tataki Also miso soup was a huge bowl and super flavorful! This place is just downright fun. There was a bit of a wait for a table, but they offer to call you that way you can wander around outside on Nicollet Mall! The host working tonight was amazing, they were so friendly and funny when informing us about the whole conveyer belt sushi process, in their words: "see the plate you want, grab it, and eat!" Love! They have Japanese soda, Sangaria (no it's not sangria!) you must try if you're not partaking in the specialty cocktails! My partner had the Mango Mule cocktail and said it was delicious, but maybe not worth the price for how small the drink was. They have a color coding system so you know exactly how much each plate is on the conveyer, and we started grabbing plates as soon as we saw some good options (which was right away). We scarfed down food so fast that I didn't even take food pics, but our favorites were the: -double shrimp roll -crab meat cucumber salad -empire roll We definitely found that the red plates are the best value! Overall, a great deal for how much food you get. Seriously don't be scared away by price since it's all up to you! Only complaint? I love the concept of sushi conveyor belt! Since this is the first one in Minnesota, it's been popular and busy. When I arrived, there was a wait to be seated. Knowing that they just recently opened and everyone wants to try this place, I expected a wait. I think the sushi quality isn't the best, but it's good. It lbs comparable to Kyoto, Akita, or Tokyo Sushi AYCE. Sushi Train is AYCE but the pricing is not a fixed price as other restaurants you've been to. Depending on the color or plate you've grabbed it varies from $2-$5/ plate. In the end, I grabbed about 5 plates and totaled to $22. Forgot to mention, parking is a hassle. There is no private parking, you'll have to park on the street and pay or a ramp. I would come back again, just not so often. The experience is different from regular sushi restaurant. Come on ride the train.... I had conveyor belt sushi and for one brief shining moment the world seemed ok. The question is, can the marvelous novelty of the experience lift it to 5 stars despite what is ultimately good but not great sushi? After a long discussion with the other half, the answer is no. But really, it is so much fun and the sushi is as good as almost any you'll get in the Twin Cities. There's tons of variety and the food prices are super reasonable. One standout was the Golden Mountain. And fun? So much fun. One thing is quite inexplicable: $8 beers?! That's like ballgame prices! It's super busy so call ahead or be prepared to wait. The staff is beyond nice so they'll do everything to make your wait pleasant. read more

The Lichee Mojito is fabulous. Balanced & refreshing with generous amount of fresh mint & three tender lichees. We were delighted that Sushi Train was open on Christmas Eve & we very much enjoyed choosing items from the conveyor that wound beautifully around the dining booths. I started with Ikura (salmon roe), followed by seared seared Hokkaido scallop, Edamame, & a Cajun Roll. All were fresh and very tasty. read more

The sushi I had was sub par. I got the Miso Ramen and was really disappointing. It looked like a giant bowl of the cheap ramen noodles you can buy at the store. It had two slices of pickled radish, and one half of a hard boiled egg. I had to add my own seasonings. There was zero broth. I wouldn't recommend this place for anything. read more

I was so excited to hear about this conveyor belt sushi restaurant opening up downtown and only a few blocks from my apartment! The sushi fish was fresh, the service and variety good, but the prices seemed a little high(partially because I always wanted the purple/most expensive plates). I ended up grabbing salmon sashimi, rainbow roll, snow crab, red dragon, and eel nigiri but also got to taste the gyoza and cooked octopus. I liked how you could also order al a carte if the dish you wanted didn't come around. With a glass of wine, my bill came out to $45. I would definitely come here again for the experience and location but if I was looking for high quality sushi I might choose another restaurant. Minneapolis definitely was in need of a conveyor belt sushi restaurant and I'm glad Sushi Train was able to provide! read more

First and foremost, I love the concept of this place - the idea of semi-buffet style sushi served on a revolving conveyer belt takes the dining experience to a new level of cool. I also really love that they serve their rolls in 4 pieces, allowing the guest to try many different flavors in one sitting. The area this place lost points for me was the quality of the food. While I must admit, I have extremely high sushi standards, I found these rolls to be just ok. I felt the ingredients lacked the freshness I expect in high quality sushi and though I ordered a number of different options, felt that the flavors lacked variety and blended together. I will give them another try sometime but wouldn't say I have found a new favorite as of now. read more

You have to go if you love sushi, what's better then getting to try as many sushi dishes as you can and have that arrive to you on a train..genius! At first it's a little confusing pick up what you want to eat stack the dish by color, the prices are on the menu and then they add up the plates by color at the end. Purple is the most expensive sushi dish 5.50 and green is the cheapest 1.95 I also got a sake peach tea....wow so good it was 12.00 worth it for sure. I love the concept of this, great way to try different dishes you may not normally try and the food is so fresh! Cant wait to come back and visit. read more

Absolutely the friendliest and most delicious Sushi by far. Very helpful and friendly staff. Bar None. Was very sad about the destruction during the riots. Was unsure if we were going to have the PLEASURE of Dining there again. Really enjoy every visit. We have dined at many Sushi places so far, and still our ultimate favorite is Sushi Train. We just had the sushi off the conveyor, which had loads to choose from. Four stars might be generous for the sushi, but you can also order off the menu and get something perhaps a bit more creative. The quality of the sushi beat my expectations. It might be novel to pick your sushi off a conveyor belt that's running past your table, but it also means the chefs have a good view of what to make, based on what's missing from the conveyor. In short, freshly made sushi, fun atmosphere and friendly staff. read more

This place gave me food poisoning and nearly kept me in MSP an extra night due to being so sick. Some of the plates were not great and there was a fish bone (!!) in one of my pieces of sashimi. I would not recommend as this joint even if it didn't get me sick as the sushi is not good at all and is fairly overpriced for what you're getting. read more

We couldn't wait to get on board this train....and glad we did. Only open for a short time, this place occupies a nice little nook on the mellow end of Nicollet Mall. Owner Kevin greeted us with a huge smile and awesome vibe - a positive impression right away. He chatted with us for about 15 min, explaining the decision to launch, the concept, menu and it was like hanging with a friend. Anxious to get started we began with Lychee Martinis (ayumazing) and then here came the goodies on the little Disneyesque conveyor belt. So fun. We grabbed edamame, shrimp tempura rolls, tiger rolls, fresh tuna, tomago, salmon, avocado and all sorts of other goodies. It was a train trip on the sushi wonderland express. And every bit of it tasted and looked amazingly fresh and lovingly prepared. The place was buzzing and we lingered for about 2 hours as we were having so much fun. Can't say enough good things about the quality. Really tops. And surprisingly, very affordable. Charge is based on the number and color of small plates remaining at the table. Four of us got out of there with 20 plates and two rounds of drinks for under $150. Hell a couple can spend that on a meal for two at some place where quality isn't always guaranteed! This however was first rate as far as food. Service however was meh. Our wait person was overwhelmed, didn't know what a martini was (this joint has a full bar) and as the evening went on, became less interested in service. Either too many tables in her section or she was just not wanting to be there. Hugely robotic. Also, our table was near a side station and every time staff cleared a table, the crash of dishes made the Sushi Train sound like an Amtrak derailment - very disconcerting and hugely startling. Glad to say nobody was hurt though. High marks for the decor, full bar and actual sushi bar also available. If rock star Kevin can work out some of the first weeks service kinks, folks will be getting on this Train for weeks and years to come. Will be back. read more

I absolutely love this place. When I found out that this place is a conveyor belt, I was excited. I have been to Osaka, Japan and this place reminded of the experience grabbing sushi as fast as I could before it went right by, of course, it does not top off Japan, but it brought memories. This place is below some apartments at Nicollet mall across the street from the YMCA. The site gets packed so just keep that in mind if you are coming here with an empty belly and you have no patience to wait. They have a menu if you want other options and not just sushi I haven't ordered from the menu though. The sushi, desserts, and other funky foods on the conveyor belt have different color plates, depending on the color plate is how much it cost. I don't know the prices on top of my head, but I think the highest price is $4? Not sure. That's the only con I can think of, it's easy to keep grabbing plates without thinking, especially if you're not paying attention to how many you have taken, so you kind of need to pay attention and do some math or else your bill would be pretty high. I eat a lot, so I need to bring someone with me so they can slap my hand and remind me I am not made out of money. First time here, ordered takeout. Empire roll is 5/5, so rich in flavor and crunchy crust wrapping outside, I didn't know there are warm sushi, Cajun roll is also nice with bacon wrapped inside, baby octopus is surprisingly good, fresh and easy to chew. Crabmeat Salad is okay. Fish Oliver(Ankimo) is a bit too much for me, exotic but worth a try. Squid salad is too salty, won't order again. Overall will definitely revisit this place. The food is great. The service was absolutely atrocious from the moment we walked in the door. Tandra was our server and went out of her way to be rude and difficult.
