Phenomenal addition to the AYCE sushi scene in Chicago. Sushi Payce stands out for its quality of fish, sides, and customer service. You order off of a tablet, which is significantly more convenient than paper orders. I was pleasantly surprised by the freshness of fish. The rolls come with an appropriate amount of sauce- at some of the competitors, I find the sauce overwhelming. Sushi Payce also accepts reservations via this app, making it my new go-to for the convenience and ability to plan. The space is also very comfortable with charming exposed brick. My one complaint is that on fridays, the rolls take too long to come out. I wonder if they're backed up with mobile orders but sometimes we lost track of our orders because the rolls would come out 30+ minutes later. I have ordered from SP multiple times now by delivery and I am one happy customer! The quality of their food is outstanding and they have really good customer service. For example, I ordered delivery on a Saturday night and it was taking longer than usual so I called and asked for an update. The lady in the phone was so nice and explained that they were having a busier than normal night and assured me my order is on its way. Once it got delivered they did not disappoint! I loved how she simply explained what was happening and it made me feel better for waiting. SP is now officially my go to sushi joint and I recommend them! I'm currently pregnant and am limited to my usual favorite spicy tuna but they have so many options for me and I appreciate it. I did omakase once, and neither I nor my wallet has forgotten. Every piece was a work of art, and where it comes to Ikura/Salmon Roe, it was bone dry, with every bead being separate. In a case where AYCE, in Chicago, in 2025, costs $32.99, I am not going to nitpick them into oblivion (just my usual amount - Ha!). I started off with the Salmon Crudo and Tuna Tataki. With both, the fish was of terrific quality, and the sauces and toppings sealed the deal. The salmon had a delectable tangy sauce, with the tuna having mild, citrusy notes from the ponzu. The Crab Rangoons were a little unusual. They seemed almost as though they were pan fried instead of deep fried. They were also filled with what appeared to be whole chunks of crab stick instead of a seasoned/spiced blend of cream cheese and crab stick. The Pork Belly Bao did the pork and bun part well, but it lacked any vegetable or other fresh filling to give the soft, sweet, and savory any contrast. For the other one-off items, the Tofu Skin, Eel, Black Tobiko, Aburi Salmon, and the Bluefin Toro all carry the same notes. The ingredients were of high quality, but these were otherwise pretty standard, without anything to write home about, but also nothing to complain about. When it comes to the previously mentioned Ikura: this too was standard. Since bone-dry caviar is a premium and very expensive ingredient, I can't find fault with what they used. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Torched White Tuna. Torching something effectively is more than just taking a hot flame to it (trust me, I've tried). This one was not effectively executed, with the very surface having a little charcoal flavor. Finally, we come to the Samurai Roll. This one truly surprised me with its quality and flavors. It was terrifically balanced in flavors and textures, and both the chili crisp and crunch added some additional layers of flavors and textures without cheapening the roll. I would like to recognize their menu. I've been to several AYCE places where it seems as though every roll is loaded and therefore cheapened with either crab sticks, crunch, or both. While there are rolls here that contain these, it is easy to find one without that you'll enjoy. Finally, I want to award some massive points to their fantastic service. The food came out very quick, and the team was phenomenally attentive throughout the experience. Final verdict: It is unreasonable to expect omakase-grade pieces from an AYCE spot. With that said, Sushi Payce absolutely nails it in their category and for the price point. How can you tell I am a fan? The food was good, but it takes a long time to come out, so I'd recommend ordering a large first batch. Wow! This place is well deserving of all the 5-star reviews. I recommend making a reservation, especially for dinner. For $33, you get fresh, delicious fish and other non-sushi dishes. Some of my favorites were the takoyaki, spicy tuna crispy rice, poke sashimi, white sox roll, super white tuna, yellowtail, red snapper, and torched white tuna. One of my go to spots for AYCE sushi. It's a small and intimate spot but still great for small groups of 3-5 people. Every time me and the girls come for dinner, we always make it within 10 minutes before happy hour ends. The servers are always nice and accommodate our quick happy hour drink selections, even if we are pushing it with 2 minutes left to spare! There is a great selection of appetizers in the menu. I know it's there to deter you from ordering too much sushi but what can I say? I am an appetizer lover. From the miso soup, seaweed salad, edamame, gyozas, sesame balls and tempuras, I love them all so keep em coming!! The sushi is always delicious and fresh and so many rolls to choose from! One of my favorites is the Dragon on Fire roll. It's a baked sushi with salmon and tuna and tastes so good - you gotta try it! The presentation is alway on fire too - I love the sushi boats that they come in. And such a great price. $33 for AYCE. The service may get a little slow sometimes as they only have a couple servers working at the same time - so make sure you order your first batch of rolls right away and keep track of what you ordered. Unlike other AYCE sushi spots I've been to, the servers here don't really harass you to finish your food because you do have to pay a small penalty for uneaten food. There is still a penalty but every time I go, my group and I are always mindful of not wasting any food so we have never had to pay that. Dessert is also included in the AYCE menu so make sure you LEAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT!! It's usually ice cream and they have flavors like matcha, sometimes even red bean. But they also have mochi ice cream in flavors of matcha, mango, and strawberry. Overall, a great place for AYCE sushi. I come here at least once every other month. read more

The food is great for all you can eat - especially the spicy tuna crispy rice and the karage. The only real complaint I have is the service. When all the tables fill up and they have 3rd party orders - it gets chaotic. This is my favorite ayce spot in the Chicagoland area. The ayce menu has so many options I havent seen anywhere else. I love all their deep fried rolls and their calamari is too good. The service is lovely. I just think they may need to hire more people as last time I was there, there was a hold up in the kitchen due to there only being two workers present and all the tables were filled. Its such a beautiful restaurant too, I have yet to sit inside and enjoy the ambiance in there. The outside part would be lovely opened up in the summer. read more

Sushi Payce had pretty slow service, but they let us stay longer than the posted limit to make up for it. We had a mix of a server delivering food, and a cute little robot driving food over. I can't even say which rolls and apps we tried at this point because we just kept throwing them in, but I clearly remember adding on more and more of the yellowtail jalapeno sashimi! I enjoyed the jalapeno bomb as well. But we did not like the chicken katsu. Threw in some mochi ice cream for dessert and it was delicious! Servers are always still around to answer any questions and are very friendly. There are also robots who will come serve your appetizers to you at times as well! The rest of the wait staff was sympathetic, but ultimately our entire table paid for all you can eat, but we were refused more than one order. On top of that, our first order was missing rolls and had some we didn't order. So we were completely unsatisfied The wait staff offered us a discount but the manager had to approve, and she hid in the back to refuse. The sushi itself was decent, nothing amazing, but acceptable for a buffet. Unfortunately, the experience was really soured by the management. There was no clear explanation of the leftover policy at any point: not when we were seated, not when ordering, and not during the meal. Throughout the meal, the manager kept smiling and watching while I was eating, which felt a bit uncomfortable at the time (though I later understood why lol) At the end, the manager charged us for leftovers, specifically the rice underneath the nigiri, because I ate the fish but didn't finish all the rice. If this policy had been clearly explained upfront, I would have ordered differently or avoided nigiri altogether. The manager later said I should have ordered sashimi instead of nigiri, but that option wasn't even available on the menu, and she said this while smiling in a way that felt uncomfortable given the situation I understand restaurants wanting to prevent waste, but policies need to be clearly communicated in advance, and the way this was handled felt unreasonable and unnecessary. Extremely Disappointing Experience We went to Sushi Payce in DePaul, Chicago, expecting a pleasant evening, but it turned out to be a complete disaster. Many of the hot dishes arrived cold, fried items were greasy and cold, and the sushi lacked any flavor. To make matters worse, flies were constantly flying around and even landed on our sushi (see photo). We are very disappointed with both the service and the condition of the restaurant. There were also torched pieces of nigiri that added a good variety for the usual AYCE sushi restaurants. The picture menu helps you decide which adventure to tackle next. We booked the bigger room in the back for a friends birthday party last Saturday. It was amazing! The servers were so kind and helpful, always asking if we needed anything and even helped us with serving a cake we brought! He was able to make a reservation via Yelp for Friday at 8:30! Upon arrival we were seated within 3 mins! It did take a while to get water and for our server to come by. The food was good and the initial person serving us was quite helpful. Loved the service overall. When it came time to pay the bill, however, another waitress that didn't serve us brought the check. She essentially was harassing us to pay a tip. She said again and again that the recommended tip is 18%. Okay? Like shouldn't I be the one to decide what I pay? (We paid a 15% tip). I hope the restaurant is paying their workers and this isn't a case of illegal exploitation of services because this person was making it seem as if she doesn't even get paid. Someone should report the restaurant to the authorities to ensure that there's no shady business and that the staff is being paid their earned wages. Ruined an otherwise good experience. Literally was so excited to make this our next AYCE sushi spot, but I don't think the good food is worth the harassment faced when paying the bill. PS: other reviews also share the same experience of forced tipping. Please pay your servers well for expected work they would do being servers in a restaurant so they don't harass customers. If they're told to do work outside of their scope as waiters, then it would make sense to force people to pay them for those tasks. Please also don't ingrain in them the idea that the tip amount dictates how their work was - that's a horrible policy to have as an employer. read more
