First visit to Sushi One after years of walking by I finally went to Sushi One for the first time the other day, even though I've lived nearby for a few years. I'd seen the 4.5-star Google rating and figured it was worth a try, especially since it looks like the place has changed management -- the person running it now seems different, and the menu has shifted from just Japanese food to a mix of Japanese and Korean dishes, which is new. Please correct me if I was wrong. I ordered salmon sushi and spicy noodles (a typical Korean-style spicy ramen or udon). Honestly, both were exactly what you'd expect: the salmon was fresh enough and the sushi was clean and simple, nothing fancy but perfectly fine for a casual bite. The spicy noodles were satisfying, the soup is rich with a decent kick, but again, nothing that made me stop and say "Wow, this is amazing." For my personal taste, the food and the prices felt pretty standard -- nothing overpriced, but also nothing that feels like a real standout. The interior is a bit dated, and the lighting is quite dim, which I guess is meant to give it more of a bar or lounge vibe. It's clean and functional, but it doesn't feel modern or particularly cozy. Food (3.25/5) - huge menu of appetizers, sets, mains and sushi. Order through QR code. - Hako Flamingo Roll - this is one of the special maki rolls with Avocado, Tobiko, Torched Salmon, Jalapeno Sauce: Special Sauce, Spicy Mayo, Bbq Sauce. Thought it was ok... salmon was ok and rice fell apart often when I went for the sideways soy dip. 8 pieces in total. - Tako Sashimi - was not great... on the tough side which is never good for octopus. Service (4/5) - server and order came fairly quickly and he came back to refill water and check in. Atmosphere (3.25/5) - it's a pretty basic small layout and feels like it's been around for a bit. Miso soup and salad were served before the sushi rolls. Love the torched salmon and variety of fish in the set. Service wasn't good. Waited for a while to get the attention of the waitress to come over to place our order. There were only two other tables and maybe they have more takeout orders, I don't know. They used to offer All You Can Eat before COVID-19 and it was amazing, a bit pricey though. But now, they only offer a la carte. The waiting staff are very friendly and accommodating. [Review was based on experience weeks ago] Came here to celebrate an anniversary and we both do not regret it at all! We came just after they opened and so we were the first ones in. Right when we seated, we mass-ordered all the sushi you see in the pic and just waited haha. When the food came, I was astonished by the presentation. It was beautifully plated and using wooden platters really makes their presentation stand out compared to other AYCE spots. My partner and I devoured everything and we were just able to finish it without any leftovers. The sushi was so delicious, they also gave us a good portion of cuts. Would I come back? One of our go to sushi spots in north York. We used to come for AYCE sushi as it is walking distance from us but AYCE is no longer available due to the pandemic. Our favourite things to order here are their torch pressed salmon sushi topped with slices of jalapeño and their sushi/sashimi small boat (great value, especially for 2 people which is usually more than we can finish.) Oh, how I miss the All-You-Can-Eat option here. Alas, it was not meant to last. But I have no problem eating here, because the quality is just that great! What I like about Sushi One: 1. You can tell just from the plumpness of the fish, texture, and colour. 3. Consistent presentation and quality. A lot of places have "good days" and "bad days". Not Sushi One. I used to come here once or twice a week with my boyfriend for over a year, before COVID-19 broke out. Each experience was great, and I have never left feeling disappointed or upset. 4. They don't overfill the sushi and rolls with rice! This is EXTREMELY important for me at a sushi place, ESPECIALLY one where they (used to) offer AYCE. They only used a very thin layer of rice, which I really appreciated. You can taste the fish more, and you're not overfilling yourself on rice! You might feel daunted by the price since AYCE is no longer an option, but if you're looking for a special dinner and want good sushi, I highly recommend this restaurant. What I recommend: 1. Super delicious!! Sushi One is a restaurant in North York that offers high quality Japanese cuisine, especially seafood and sushi! I come here often to order sushi and I'm never ever disappointed. Each time I've gone, the rolls have been so so tasty and my favourite is the spicy salmon roll. They add tempura bits to it, which really is the cherry on top and makes the roll taste even better! My family and I love ordering from here and we have yet to find another sushi place that makes a better spicy salmon roll than Sushi One! Sushi One has a large patio, and it was open for lunch earlier this week due to the (finally) warm weather. The setup is a bit weird; you have to walk to the middle of the restaurant for the "front" desk, at least that's what I had to do. Either way I was seated promptly (and actually had one of the last seats in the restaurant), and was offered tea to start. While the lunch specials were appetizing, I opted for the sushi silver, since I only wanted sushi and rolls. It came with a miso soup, salad, and a spicy salmon hand roll. The miso soup and salad weren't anything spectacular, but a good start nonetheless. The spicy salmon hand roll didn't feel that spicy, but the avocado was a little bit on the bland side. The salmon was excellent though. The sushi silver platter came with 6 pieces of california roll, and salmon, tuna, shrimp, yellow tail, and red snapper sushi pieces. All the fish tasted excellent as well as the rolls! My only complaint was that the rice was a little bit hard, but still chewable. It was tough for me to give either a 3 or 3.5, but if I was talking about comparing to Sushi Moto (which I gave a 3), I like this place more, at least for lunch. 3.5 it is, plus the .5 for the excellent service I received. read more

I am extremely picky about sushi restaurants because I used to work at a Japanese sushi place and also had sushi and sashimi in Vancouver, BC for over 6 months. First of all, I have admitted that this restaurant is always busy. Many of my friends recommend me to visit here since it's one of the best sushi places in the area. Their menu is well designed for different customers. Some of the photos posted here really display the look of the food well. My co-workers and I were in the area for lunch, so we ordered 3 dishes from the lunch menu. The price related to the portion of the bento box is fairly reasonable. For average diners, one order of the bento box is enough for lunch, and the price including the tax and tips will be roughly around $15. I wouldn't say it's super special in terms of the taste compared to the ones in BC, but in the area here, it is certainly a go-to place for lunch or dinner with friends. read more

This was an impromptu date night for us when we stumbled on the place! The service was excellent and the vegetarian Bento box was fab! Mushroom teriyaki was so yum! For a sushi place, they had a huge vegetarian menu with so many options! The service was amazing and the staff was friendly, we are going to come back for the ayce with friends. The quality of the sushi here is a step above your average sushi joint. The deluxe sashimi ($21.99 for 24 pieces) was very good. There was a good selection of very nice and very fresh fish. The slices were a good size. The beef BiBimBap ($11.50) was also very good. The house wine is not great (Kressmann), but at $5 a glass you really can't complain. Besides, I prefer the hot sake ($9.99 for a large.) The service is alright, even tough the servers seem to all rotate between the tables. They wear nice traditional-type cloths. The ambiance is just fine, albeit a bit on the casual side with the TVs on, and the cheesy rock playing out of a single small speaker. They do have an AYCE option for $27.99 or $29.99 on the weekend. The dynamite roll featured what tasted like caesar dressing on top. Caesar sushi? Not a fan!!!! Salad was overdressed, the katsu was also too saucy. I guess everything was too saucy. The sashimi was yummy, and the sushi was alright. For the price the box was worth it, I was too full to finish the japchae and rice. But if I go back next time I'd ask for no sauce. read more

They've also kept up with the torched/aburi trends, offering their own torched nigiri and oshizushi. I would say they need to go easy on the sauce (that blob of herb sauce, while was enjoyable to me, was scraped off by my friends who stated it was too strong---maybe moderate dots over the nigiri next time!). Service, despite being paper-order-driven was reasonably quick and accurate. As I've grown more accustomed to the higher quality of sushi of a la carte places, Sushi One is one of the few I can say gives their utmost, regardless of whether you dine AYCE or a la carte. read more

The fried tofu appetizer was ok and I liked the sauce it was in - more than the overly salty soy sauce for my sashimi. The sashimi itself was decently fresh but I was not impressed at all at the ghettoness of the salad which consisted flatly of lettuce and shredded carrots in a weak "ginger" dressing in a plastic bowl. I feel like this is a 3.5 star place, based on my order through Uber Eats. I decided to give them a try because Uber Eats had a free delivery promo, and I wanted sushi. They have a reasonable salmon lover's lunch special ($14.99) which includes a salad, miso soup, 5 pieces of salmon sashimi, 4 pieces of salmon nigiri, and 6 pieces of spicy salmon maki. They prepared my food quickly and it was also delivered quickly. The salmon was fine but not great. I found the slices of sashimi to be on the thin side. The maki was a bit oily from the tempura bits, and I didn't love the extra dab of spicy mayo on the top - overall not great quality of salmon mix in the maki filling (salmon chopped very small). The seaweed part of the roll was strangely very chewy, but, I actually liked it that way. They gave me extra wasabi as requested (I always use a lot), but I actually didn't need it in the end as their original amount of wasabi was quite generous. I loved that they gave me a decent sized disposable container of soy sauce (as opposed to packets) - I really appreciated this because then I didn't have to worry about what I would put my soy sauce in. Salad was generic (for a Japanese restaurant) but I did like that the salad dressing was on the side, giving me flexibility to add as much or little as I wanted. Visited Sat Sept 29 for dinner. I love Sushi, and this is one of my top spots in North York. I will definitely be coming back again. Presentation of each dish was beautiful. Pros MUST TRY hako torched and pressed sushi, the flavour is very unique and each piece melts in your mouth. Very unique dishes, I had to google several items because I didn't know waht they were (nabe soup, tobiko salad) Service was attentive even though it was packed on a Sat night. Deep fried banana is a personal favourite :) Con Price is a bit high ends up being $36 per person on Fri and Sat ($29.99 + $2+ tax) minus 1 star for that. Didn't get to try the brown rice, not sure if they charge extra for this. Damage $74 after tax, before tip. read more
