Sushi is fresh and tasty here. NGL, price is a bit high for what you get (quality/quantity) when compared against other mid-tier sushi restaurants. Service is good, friendly. My suggestion would be to not use fragrances like perfume, it's a bit strong which clashes with the enjoyment of the meal. The restaurant's decor is aesthetically pleasing. Good to try I'd you're in the area.

Salmon sashimi, nigiri, California roll. $20

Wanted to give this place a try after a family member gave it high praise. Dropped by for lunch. We both had their bento box lunches. Protein was fresh and nicely prepared. A bowl of miso soup came with the meal. This was one of the best prepared miso I've had in a long time. Broth was clean right to the last sip. Most places don't mix/dissolve the miso paste properly resulting in a gritty last few sips. Over all price is excellent for a dine in meal. You'd pay the same or more for takeout at some places. Establishment clean, nice decor. Service friendly and efficient.

The highlight here is their nigiri! I'm usually a maki girl, but their cuts of fish, portion, variety definitely beats anything in my City - yes, even my usual sushi place. Maki, on the other hand, was "drier" both the fish and the rice. Miso soup/salad (iceberg lettuce) were meh. So don't judge this place based on the accompanying apps! Service was actually upbeat and friendly. Solid 4/5.

I'm sad this place is so far from home - the food is delicious and the service is great. Had a large group (13) and they reserved a big table by the window - sort of our private area. I ordered the spicy salmon and spicy tuna rolls and they were yummy- fresh and a bit spicy. It's hard to find ones that are actually spicy. While it isn't a big place, the menu has lots of options- my friends got the small sushi boat and there were plenty of variety for 2 people. The prices are good - you are definitely getting your money's worth here!

This is not an ayce joint and only bentos are served for lunch. The food was great, and the atmosphere was intimate. However, there definitely were a few hiccups - for instance, upon entering the waitress forgot to give us a menu so we sat there waiting until she came back asking if we were ready to order. She realized her mistake and apologized, then handed us a few copies to look over. After ordering our food, she forgot to give us plates so I had to ask for some. It wasn't even busy so not sure why it was one thing after the other. Pretty much after the plate incident it was getting better but nonetheless a hassle for us to remind her of small things when we should just be enjoying our meals. The food was delicious and very good in my opinion. The portion sizes are decent, with the perfect ratio of rice to veggies and meat. All of the prices were also pretty comparable to most sushi places. The bathrooms were clean, and behind a separate door so you don't smell anything emitting from them. The atmosphere is nice and intimate and service in general is pretty friendly. This place is quite small, so prepare to wait unless you have a reservation or come at a good time when there's tables available for walk-in's. There is free parking right in front of the vicinity.

Sushi is close to my heart. That wasn't always the case, but you come to love the stuff after friends drag you to enough Asian restaurants. So read on to see how Genji Sushi ranks atop my sushi experiences. Genji Sushi is a small to medium sized sushi restaurant in the North York area, along Steeles Avenue. It has an intimate and elegant vibe that could certainly suit a date, but works for just about any small group experience. Lastly, word to the wise, Genji is an à la carte restaurant. I was interested in a little bit of variety, so I sprung for the sushi & sashimi dinner, $30. This comes with 11 pieces of assorted sashimi, 7 pieces of assorted sushi, 3 California rolls, and 3 spicy salmon rolls. Overall, I would say that I was quite satisfied. The entire plate gave the impression of care and freshness. All of the fish tasted very fresh and had the texture to match, the ginger was a welcome regular ginger colour rather than the perplexing pink that I'm often served, and some at the table were of the opinion that they serve real wasabi instead of the wasabi-adjacent horseradish version. (Who knows if it actually was.) I would say that if you're dining at Genji, you are dining for the fundamentals of a sushi meal done right. They don't appear to care for featuring creative varieties of rolls with novel toppings. They go by the book. And my personal note; I think AYCE sushi is overrated. This meal was plenty, and if you're dying for variety, just order different things with friends. Problem solved. Go to Genji! You'll like it.

A whole lotta take out. So nice - they gave us tons of soy sauce, wasabi, and complementary miso soups / salads.

I ordered take out but it was delicious! The restaurant is really quaint and cozy and the staff were super nice. Next time I will definitely try dining in. Here's what I ordered: 1) spicy bulgogi dinner - recommended! Spicy and very flavourful 2) spicy salmon roll, dynamite roll, spicy scallop roll - all were excellent! Flavourful, fresh, and perfect rice ratio 3) Kalbi short ribs appetizer - very tasty! 4) Kani salad - standard and good 5) uni sushi - susprised they carried it and it was super fresh All in all, great food and great value. Will definitely return.

Genji Sushi is one of the better Japanese/Korean restaurant in the area. Great to come here for lunch if you are in the neighbourhood. Especially they serves lunch till 4 pm, with 32 different items to choose from $7.95. We decided to get these to share, all nicely presented in a bento box with salad and our orange dessert... Spicy Bulgogi ($8.95) - with 8 piece of spicy rolls - my DC commented that the bulgogi is a little spicy, but of course I found them to be A-OK Lunch Combo Special B ($15.95) - the fish selections are just little boring: Salmon and Tuna - Good big portion but the price to match too - Shari rice is nicely prepared Waitresses here are nice and smiley, services are good and efficient. Genji Sushi is a decent place to meet up your friends for lunch and chit chat a little if you are in the neighbourhood.. but doesn't really worth a special trip.

I really liked this place! It's a small little restaurant tucked into this nondescript brick building, but the interior is very nice. The employees were Korean, so am I safe to assume this place is Korean owned? The names of some of their dishes are very straightforward, as in they're literally what they give you. I ordered this salmon box while my friend got the chicken teriyaki one. It came in a cute little bento box with six salmon maki (was supposed to have avocado, but I asked for that to be removed), six salmon sushi, and a few cuts of salmon sashimi. There was also a bowl of miso soup, green salad, and sliced orange provided. The salmon did not taste or smell fishy at all, which is an obvious good sign as it indicated how fresh the fish was. I didn't try my friend's food, but she got chicken teriyaki, rice, and sashimi in her box (+ miso soup, salad, and orange). She told me that the chicken teriyaki was larger and more flavourful than she expected, which is always a good thing to hear! Service was standard. Both our bills came up to a little under 20 dollars each. If you're a student on a budget (like I'm supposed to be...), then maybe you should save this place for a special day. Otherwise, Genji is great, and would be a very cute date idea! *Note: I was not on a date, but this little restaurant had some vibes going f

Went here before a chocolate truffle making yelp event in vaughan. Had a long hard day at work today so I really needed a great meal. J.W came about 35 mins after me so the pretty Korean servers were probably feeling sorry for me lol I ordered a small hot sake and the server was like just... for... you? Lol I waited for J.W. to come before taking my first sip. Love hot sake with my sushi. Ordered the valentine roll because I wanted some crisp and lots of fish! It's the dynamite roll with spicy tuna covered with tuna and salmon sashimi. It was large and full of fresh flavor. The price was fair for the quality. The best part was that the shrimp tempura in the dynamite roll remained crispy throughout the whole roll. The fish to rice ratio was awesome! Had a spicy gyoza off my J.W's plate and it was the right amount of sweet and spicy. Can't rmm the roll he got but it was okay. The service was good, the atmosphere intimate with nice instrumental music playing in the back ground. All in all I would go back and try their Dragon Legend Roll and different types of appetizers. Tips! They have quinoa and brown rice for a dollar or two extra!

This is a half decent restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Right off the bat, you will be impressed by how clean and well decorated it is. Complete with washitsu-style seating along the perimeter, it makes for an interesting and relaxing dining experience. The service is quick. We must have been in and out in 30 minutes or less. The Lunch Menu is served from 11:30-4:00. It is a mix of Bulgogi, Teriyaki style dishes and sushi combos. I couldn't quite find a combo that spoke to me. I picked the Salmon Sushi + Sashimi + Maki combo. 17 pieces altogether for $13.95. I think I will have to layoff the salmon for a while! Otherwise, the bento style presentation was neat. The fish was cut thick and looked quite fresh. I thought it was missing the ornamental stuff that makes sushi look nice and taste good. Some might prefer the focus shifted to fish. I will recommend this place to any poor soul who works in the area or goes to York, as it is by far the best sushi option in the area.

The restaurant is super quiet and they offer great quality of food with great service, and the price is expensive if you choose to order sukiyaki set (expect $80+ per person). You can choose between sushi sets at different price level or sukiyaki from the menu. This suits the need of our group given some people prefer sushi but some couldn't eat raw food. They also offer a couple of limited appetizer dishes such as tempuras and unagi don. If you booked the sukiyaki table and want to order sushi, you need to call them in advance to notify which sushi sets you want. We tried the sashimi and sushi courses at $55, which included miso soup, 5 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi (squid, toros, salmon, scallop etc.), handroll and matcha or black sesame icecream at your choice. The sushi is smaller than average, suitable for small eaters. The course is totally worth the money. I love every piece of sashimi and my favourite sushi include the scallop and the squid. Everything was super fresh. The dessert was also having the perfect sweetness level for me. In addition, we also tried the sukiyaki for two ($110), which includes mushrooms, cabbages, great quality of Angus beef, yummy tofu and udon. Again, all the material was with great quality and super fresh. I especially liked the sweet sukiyaki soup, the tofu and the udon. We also ordered some shareable dishes including chawanmushi, unagi don and cod. Cod was cooked to perfect (soft and flavourful), and unagi don had quite decent portion. It would be better if the unagi could be softer from my personal opinion. Chawanmushi was mediocre. Overall, I strongly recommend this restaurant to fan of Japanese cuisine. It meets different people's needs by offering both cooked and raw food options, and the sushi set definitely has great value for money.

We were ushered through the tranquil restaurant and seated at the sushi bar, a zen ambience. We chose the $55 sushi+sashimi omakase lunch course, and it didn't disappoint. The eight pieces of nigiri featured a somewhat typical selection of fish (and hotate/scallop), but slightly edgy and unique in the choice of seasoning and flavours, prepared by Chef Takinami with all the pomp and ceremony and you would expect from fine omakase. The pacing was excellent, we never felt rushed from piece to piece; the wait staff were attentive as would be expected from a high-end Japanese restaurant, on par with omakases that cost three times as much. Overall, incredible value on the meal, for both the food and experience. We couldn't help but look around at what the regulars were enjoying (in addition to their omakase nigiri) -- botan ebi nigiri with deep fried shrimp heads, chawanmushi, cooked dishes featuring monk fish livers, tempura appetizers and more... some great ideas for our next visit!

It was extraordinarily quiet when we came upon this place on a Saturday night. Nevertheless, the food was absolutely delicious and arrived piping hot and well portioned. As expected from this popular chain, the katsu was superbly crispy on the outside while still maintaining the tenderness of the meat inside. The variety they have on the menu - including various sauces, cheese options, and udon - will keep you coming back for more. The most remarkable aspect of this particular location, though, was the quality of the service. Our waitress was so attentive and sweet, patiently answering all our questions and never leaving our glasses even close to empty. We were offered free refills of the miso soup as well which was a nice touch! Highly recommended to anyone shopping at Yorkdale nearby - skip the overcrowded food courts and mall restaurants and head on over here!

They have fun, interestingly crafted meals. Two of which we had ordered are the Carbonara Udon $17.50 and the Brick Cheese Katsu $22.90. The meals are not only cool and exciting, but the taste of the food can also properly back up the gimmick. The Carbonara Udon has creamy carbonara sauce and comes with 2 tempura pieces. For the Brick Cheese Katsu, I ordered the Gold & Silver Katsu to be able to sample both the Cheddar cheese wrapped inside the pork loin (Gold Katsu), as well as the Mozzarella cheese which is the Silver Katsu. It is a great combination of hot, fried food with a cheesy, creamy filling. Service was honestly a mixed bag. On many occasions, we found ourselves having trouble getting the waiters' attention because the staff are situated at the far back of the narrow restaurant. It was a good thing thay the staff are very courteous. They attended to and took care of an isolated request we had during the time we were there. The menu may be a bit more pricey compared to other similar establishments. Almost all of the meals start off at the $20 range.

We ordered this time the Yorokobi set for 2 and upgraded the sushi to brown rice for $5 extra and upgraded the green dragon roll that came with the meal to volcano salmon roll (which is one of their popular special rolls) and paid the difference. We also added a hamachi carpaccio just for more more protein for my SO because he thinks it might not be enough, but we were left super full. I love that the sushi wasn't loaded with rice and it was thinly included, we did mention that we usually don't like that much and the server said they can even adjust the rice content in the sushi.... We didn't confirm to adjust it but perhaps they went with it because rice is perfectly thin in the maki and less than usual for a nigiri, which is great because otherwise I don't know if we would have finished the meal. $5 to upgrade to brown rice for the sushi set that didn't have that much rice is still IMO a bit steep. Other that, the sushi is fresh, the special rolls are eye catching and tasty and the hamachi carpaccio was good too, LOVE the presentation. I think the best thing here is still their special rolls though! Server is so personable and made sure we were well taken care of. Only feedback I have here is the miso soup that with the Yorokobi set is way too salty I couldn't finish mine after a sip. Ambiance was clean with little Japanese decor throughout. This was a slightly rough accompaniment to the sashimi.

This curry was served with a super tender chicken thigh with an assortment of seasonal vegetables ( lotus root, mushroom etc). This made the curry super rich and flavourful. That's right, I had to fuse some famous song lyrics into this review to make it as original and stellar as the food at Hay Sushi was! A simple Google search will tell you that traditional Japanese food, or washoku, is renowned for its nutritional balance; it emphasizes seasonal ingredients, small portions, and the ichiju-sansai (one soup, three sides) structure, which includes rice, miso soup, fish or soy, and vegetables, often eaten until 80% full. - Hay Sushi does just that! Everything they serve is understated yet undeniably hits the spot. I had a 3-course Winterlicious meal that was a delight with every bite and every course. Sometimes with set menus you might worry that the quality, quantity, or variety is less than satisfactory but this was far from it. Granted, they had run out of 2 items from their appetizers by the second day of Winterlicious but every last remaining item on the menu was different from the rest and offered a new dimension for your taste buds. The nori tacos are a testament to the fact that incredible things can come in small packages. They come discreetly served in their own little armchair-style pedestals, and guess what?, they do deserve to be put on pedestals as the blend of flavours and textures achieved with each one is truly remarkable. I had the spicy salmon nori taco and the veggies nori taco, both were unbelievable. So here I am wondering if the nori tacos were a one-hit wonder and the second course comes with it's full array of perfectly arranged 3 sides, main, rice, miso soup. I had the Sapporo Style Soup Curry Teishoku. This was not spicy but had a uniquely charred taste supplemented with vegetables such as squash, mushroom, pepper, onion, and lotus root. The chicken was succulent and even the rice was spot on. If you thought sides would be unremarkable, you would be wrong. The daikon, green vegetables and pickled cucumber, carrots, and raddish all pulled more weight than I ever thought was possible. The freshness and impact of each food item even came down to the ginger that was probably the most memorable ginger I've ever had and I never thought ginger alone could ever be that impressive. At this point of the meal I'm far more than 80% full, but hay, there's still dessert! And yes, dessert did not disappoint. I ordered a seemingly simple sorbet but lo and behold the sorbet was truly made with Asian pear and tasted like an explosion of the said flavour; not too icy, not too sweet, just right. If Japanese food truly prides itself on providing balance in nutrition, ingredients, and flavour, Hay Sushi should be very proud indeed

On Sunday, I got together with two friends for lunch at Hana Don. Markham has a location that I have yet to visit. My friends come to this one at CF Fairview Mall often and recommended that we come here. I booked a reservation for three at 12:30 pm online. It was easy. I drove over to this mall, which has changed a lot. There are more eateries that face Sheppard Avenue East and are connected to the mall, but you don't have direct access to it. The Moxie's is still there. I didn't recognize the others. Parking was challenging. This mall was busy. I ended up finding a spot close to the former Hudson's Bay store. I then walked over. I entered the eatery and a man greeted me. I let him know that I had a reservation under my name. He found it and guided me to a table in the corner of the eatery. My friend walked in and saw me through the window. They came over and we chatted while figuring out what we wanted to eat. We got these items: - Chicken katsu udon - Yuzu matcha soda (me) - Sirloin set (me) - Chicken teriyaki set - Dynamite roll One of my friends had udon for the first time. It was in broth. The chicken katsu came on a separate plate. I had a piece and it was tasty. She loved her meal. The udon was chewy. It looked good. My other friend was recovering from a cold, so we kept things safe by not sharing anything with him. He got the chicken teriyaki set and ate everything up. He ordered a dynamite roll and we had his California roll that came with his meal. I was pleased that his appetite was in good shape. She and I shared the California roll. It was delicious. It had imitation crab and avocado. This place was generous with ingredients in this roll. It was fresh and satisfying. I got the yuzu matcha soda. It was heavenly. I stirred it up before I drank it. It had the perfect balance of citrusy, sweet yuzu with good matcha and fizz. So refreshing! I loved my sirloin set. The sirloin steak don was exceptionally filling. The steak morsels were flavourful and perfectly cooked. It came with a lot of rice that was perfectly steamed. This set came with sashimi mori. I loved the salmon, but the smoked fish wasn't the best. The veggie tempura was excellent. The eggplant, sweet potato, and squash weren't greasy. They were crispy and yummy. The amazuzuke was excellent. I got white radish cubes that were pickled in what tasted like yuzu. Each cube cleansed my palate. I need to make some at home! The miso soup was excellent. I loved the cubed tofu. The salad was okay. The dressing tasted bland compared to everything else. It needed more miso or something. The sets were a great deal. The quality was superb. They are available every day between 11 am and 4 pm. We were too stuffed to get any dessert. The ube tiramisu intrigued me. I'll need to find room to enjoy it next time. It was busy here. The downside was that we had to flag our server to get more water and the bill. Otherwise, everything that we consumed was yummy. I paid with a credit card. I tipped and was done. Yay! I used the washroom before we left. The women's washroom was clean. No issues. This eatery is a great place to catch up with friends over delicious food. I'd like to come here on a weekday and gauge the parking scene. I'd return to try more good eats and drinks. (187)
