TL;DR If not for the surprise plastic in my food it would've gotten 2* instead of one. Mediocre sushi place. It's always empty (a sign), the MAIN SERVER DOESN'T SPEAK ENGLISH, and the atmosphere is downright creepy. **DISCLAIMER** This is Toronto guys. If you can't go to literaly any of the other 500 locations the GTA has to offer, you must be beyond desperate to end up here. I came here because a coworker asked me to, otherwise never in my life would I have come out of my way to seek anything from this place. Food (Sadness) Doesn't deserve a rating. The Steak Roll was overpriced as shit for 8 pcs that were smaller than my pinky finger for $12 dollars and the steak was overcooked, like it was so hot it was browning the avocado. The Black Dragon and Red Dragon are both dynamite bases but here's the catch. THEY'VE GOT MAYO IN THEM. NOW LISTEN. SPICY MAYO IS A THING BUT AS A CONDIMENT ON THE SIDE. DONT PUT THAT SHIT IN MY MAKI THX. Also the eel on the black dragon was littered with bones and the salmon was cut thinner than my hair (my hair is bleached to holy hell and is white than a newborns eye whites ok). Just No. Atmosphere (Creepy) Its this wierd red/orange low dimlit style to mimick those whitewashed asian films in mainland china such as shanghai and beijing eith no music whatsoever playing. I'm telling you this place was so empty I could here the dishwasher in the back breathe. It was so awkward talking to my coworker with no ambience going on. Service (-*) Our waiter couldn't speak english so he had to keep running from our table to the back 50 million times because he had no clue what we were saying. So the only guy who speaks english comes up and we ask how the boats work AND HES GOT NO CLUE EITHER. Man why hire people to do anything if people don't know what food and healthy safety standards are and your waiters can't speak english nor do they know their own menu. LIKE WHY HAVE SO MANY MENU ITEMS. This place frustrates me and I hope anyone who has ANY RESPECT FOR SUSHI TO JUST GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. A PSA FROM ME TO THE PUBLIC.

D & Y Sushi is a solid sushi place! The food comes out fast and fresh and at a reasonable price! Restaurant is new and clean and the staff are very friendly! Great place in a great neighbourhood! I would definitely come back again! First time here today: I ordered the TNT sushi rolls which comes in 10 pieces. It's a D & Y Sushi special. Basically a roll with smoked salmon, unagi, oba and cream cheese, then deep fried. It was a burst of flavours. I can't say I would order this again just because I felt like the cream cheese really overpowered the taste of the sushi. But if you love cream cheese, this one's for you! On another note, the sushi here has a lot more filling than rice. I prefer a bit more rice on my sushi, but if you like lots of filling, this place is for you! My companion also ordered the yakiniku which is on their Daily Lunch Specials menu. It was a bento box that came with some braised beef, a salad, assorted tempura and some sushi rolls of your choice: california or salmon. If you don't specify which roll you want, you'll unfortunately get california like my friend did. I didn't get a picture but it was and looked very tasty and appetizing! We decided to go with just water for today but they did have a good selection of sakes and alcoholic beverages. Will definitely come back for a try! The water was great tho. By far, the best water I have ever had in my entire life. It was ice cold (with little to no ice!) and nice and crisp. Simply wonderful. To add, the place isn't very busy so it's the perfect place to settle down with a couple friends to unwind and really enjoy the food. They played some nice traditional Japanese music too. Food comes out quick and is fresh as hell. I'll be back!

Grilled Squid...naked and beautiful...and with a nice crispy skin!

This place is decent. I was really surprised by the grilled squid...which was tasty, crispy and flavorful considering the fact that it was not deep fried or sauced. The sushi is standard, the atmosphere is chilled and the service is quick. It doesn't seem like it would handle a big rush well though...management should think about that. I don't think this place deserves a 1 star rating and maybe I'm giving a generous 4 stars to bring that rating up... It's worth checking out at least...

A bit pricey for the portion. 14 bucks for a dragon roll, but fresh ingredients. The workers at this place should be a little bit more service minded.

Small boat on a lazy susan

This place is always empty so I wasn't sure what it would be like. Wanted to give a positive review for others to see so it will stay open. I like that there is a sit down sushi place in the neighbourhood. We got the small boat. Didn't come on a boat but it was delicious. It came on a lazy Susan instead, which was pretty handy. Veggie Dragon roll is a superior roll compared to options elsewhere. The Caterpillar roll had nice pieces of salmon. First floor bathroom. The music was a little Dance Mix 2013 so not really up my alley or what I expect for a sushi date but that's really my only constructive feedback.

    Red Dragon Roll for takeout
    Kathy L.

The sushi was a bit pricey and the service was a bit slow. I was craving sushi the other day and decided to check this place out. I ordered the Red Dragon Roll for take-out and it took a while for the workers to make the dish. There were only three people working and there no other customers inside the restaurant. The place was a bit dark and felt a bit eerie. There was also no wifi here. However, when I came home and ate my meal, it was delicious! There was a perfect amount of avocado and cucumbers inside the roll. The packaging was also well-done and looked very appealing.

    Bento box - salmon

First time checking out this restaurant and our family enjoyed a weekend dinner here. Entrees ordered included bento boxes, teriyaki and ramen. Service is genuine, earnest and prompt; we never felt untended to. Portion sizes were standard; satiating and not overboard. Food tasted flavourful; just mmm mmms all around. Being a bento box lover, I did notice that there aren't as many options as most Japanese restaurants do have. I also found it strange that there wasn't a non-raw eater option as all boxes came with sashimi...problem solved as I gave away my pieces! We'd return as it's in the neighbourhood. But too bad about the limited delivery range as we are just beyond the boundaries!

It's my go-to spot to get my don fix - I love the wide variety of dons (rice bowls) that they offer with various fish and seafood combinations. There are also unique appetizers in the menu, such as Purple Yam Croquettes, Crab Crackers, Braised Bamboo Shoots with Shirasu (immature whitebait fish), and Takowasa (marinated raw octopus pieces, to be eaten with or wrapped in nori / seaweed). Although the dons are the main highlight of their menu (hence the restaurant name), they also offer traditional sushi, sashimi, sushi rolls and sets (similar to other Japanese sushi restaurants). Miso Aburi Scallops were very flavourful - nicely torched, giving the scallops a nice grill / char taste. They came with red and green seaweed, and a bit of fish roe. Large Premium Hana Don contained a good amount of fish and seafood, including a whole abalone, uni, shrimp in the shell, aburi salmon, ikura (salmon roe), salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, other various fish sashimi, tamago (egg), and a few slices of cucumber on a generous bed of rice. I liked that the rice was a mix of white rice and some type of dark-coloured grains. Unatama Don came with a big piece of unagi and tamago (egg) that were both excellent. The sashimi were all fresh. Okonomiyaki was disappointing but it was sort of expected... for only $9, it was about 99% just flour pan-fried in a patty, without any substantial fillings (unlike real okonomiyaki, which usually contains protein / seafood, cabbage, eggs, and other ingredients). Location is super convenient near Bay & Dundas, ambiance is very casual, and service is quick.

The aburi-style salmon sushi was one of the highlights for me.. lightly seared, with a soft texture and just enough flavor on top without being overwhelming. The tuna tataki was also fresh and clean, simple but well done. The menu is set up to where you pick the entree and then what type of protein you want out of pork loin, chicken, fish, cheese, and sweet potato cheese. I settled on the sweet chili katsu. A piece of chicken arrived on a plate accompanied with rice and shredded cabbage. The chicken was breaded in a light panko like crumb and was half covered in the sweet chili sauce. I ate a couple of pieces and the crisp texture and flavor was wonderful. I had a bite of rice and when I got to the cabbage to my dismay I found a long piece of hair in it. I immediately lost my appetite and all I could think about was how great the two bites of chicken was. I gave up the plate and showed the staff what I found. They offered another plate a couple of times and after I declined a refund was issued. Katsuya. sucks for serving me one of the best pieces of breaded chicken in my life with hair in the food. I'm struggling to hold back the tears now as I write. I did get to try the parmesan fries which were ok. I also tasted the udon which is not one of their stronger dishes. This probably would have been five stars had it not been for the hair. I know this happens on the rare occasion but probably shouldn't if hair nets are worn. If you do try out this place, expect great katsuya.
