My wife and I had not had sushi in a while and we decided to get take out from this place. We were very happy. One thing that annoys me about a lot of rolls is that if it has tempura, the crunchy tempura gets soggy very quickly; especially for take out. My shrimp tempura roll was perfect. Maintained its crunch, good flavor. I wish they pickled the soy for the shrimp shumai. My wife lived it but I thought it was just good. The beef dumplings were very tasty. I wish they had pork dumplings, that would be amazing. I have been to several other places in town and although I cannot say which one is my favorite I will definitely come back to Sushi Koshi. read more

Right on the lively corner in Watchung Plaza, next to the famous Watchung Deli and Mr. Dino's Pizzeria in Montclair, is a small lunch and dinner restaurant filled with Japanese and Korean delights. Sushi Koshi is filled with rows upon rows of sushi under glass and a chef waving at you from behind the counter. The waiter's radiant smiles make you feel right at home. We arrived there at 1:30 on Saturday and got a seat promptly because there are never too many people there. We first got ginger ale and water, along with the complimentary soup and salad. The salad had ginger carrot dressing that was so sweet it tasted like sugar. After we finished the salad and soup, we ordered the Watchung Roll with a chicken teriyaki lunch box and shrimp teriyaki lunch box. The Watchung Roll is a mixture of fried shrimp, smoked salmon, crabmeat, and avocado mixed to greatness. The roll tastes perfect with the steaming chicken and shrimp teriyaki. It felt as if we were eating at a fancy restaurant like Ruby Foo's in New York. Not only did the servers bring the food out with haste, but they did it with a smile. If we ever needed assistance, the waiters were there in seconds. They politely answer any questions and gave us free drinks and desserts. This place is Korean owned and run and therefore I would not be honest if I said it was authentic Japanese food. The food was just OK, certainly not worthy of five stars. The sushi was cut generously but they did not put wasabi inside as requested, and standard at any Japanese restaurant in Japan. I also ordered the shumai. This place has great service and delicious food! My boyfriend and I randomly decided to try this place out last saturday and we didn't regret it. It seems like it's family owned.. ? But everyone was just so nice there. They made sure everything was great and the place even smells nice too.. doesn't have that fishy smell to it like some sushi restaurants. We saw lots of families eating there and I could see why. It's somewhere my bf and I would like to come back a month, 1 year and 10 years from now and even bring our family too. Wow! What a fantastic place.We were in area and used Yelp to guide us to this little gem tucked away in Montclair. We started with an order of tuna sushi and sake sushi, then on to some incredible rolls. The soho roll and which we had ordered with the mixed rice was Devine.Our waiter Hahn was very helpful and suggested a great roll with shrimp tempura, salmon, cucumber served with three sauces.As a surprise Hahn brought us special muscles. We live an hour south but will return as we will dream of there textured sushi served on the mixed rice. This is a byob place and right next store is a liquor store. HORRIBLE. No matter how convenient this restaurant is I would NEVER come back. We waited over 90 min for our food and it wasn't even crowded. One meal came 30 min after the first entree. We had to ask for our miso soup and salad and never got it. Lastly, the food was close to inedible. The salmon teriyaki tasted so fishy and overcooked we couldn't eat it. At most restaurants our meal would have been comped for making so many mistakes and taking so long. If there was a zero rating this place deserves it. read more

I'm not comparing Sushi Koshi to sushi greats like Sushi of Gari in NYC, but with the other sushi joints in town. This is our go-to spot when we have a sushi craving and need to stay local. The service is very friendly and gracious. We've been to most of the other sushi spots in town and around the area and this is the freshest we've had. I don't order the "fancy" rolls. I'm usually happy with basic yellowtail with scallions, tuna, salmon, mackerel, and sometimes sweet potato tempura. The fish is consistently fresh, they don't lob on a ton of rice so it remains delicate and doesn't sit in your stomach like a brick. I was surprised and very glad to see they have hoe dup bop, one of my favorite Korean dishes, but the portions have been getting smaller and their sauce could be a bit more intense. read more

I went there for dinner. I was promptly seated. I waited 13 mins and 34 seconds (I use a timer) and not one waiter came over to offer a menu or water or tell us it would be a few more minutes. Despite the host sitting us down they ignored us. I even tried to catch the waiter's attention and they ignored us while doing other tasks. Horrible customer service. Sushi Koshi is delicious! I visited Sushi Koshi for the first time this past Friday. We came in around 8 PM and they were very busy, most of the tables were full but we were seated right away. The server informed us that they were very busy with take out orders and that it may take a little bit longer to make our sushi, but we weren't in a rush. We ordered the Roll For Two, which came with soup, salad, and five sushi rolls. While we were waiting, the server brought two complementary appetizers over, one was the OMG roll, which was delicious. The staff are extremely nice, whenever I come in they literally hug me. Yesterday I ordered in because I wasn't feeling too good and when they came to my house they actually called me to come down to say hi to them and told me to feel better and hugged me. One of the most friendly staff I have ever seen in a restaurant. Now to the main point, the food: The food there is amazing, everything always fresh and delicious, my favorite menu items are Soho Roll, Spicy Crispy Crunch roll, Star roll, they also have sushi tacos which they bring out as a complimentary whenever I visit, any tataki, and spicy tuna tartar is amazing aswell. My wife loves sushi. I do not. So when I say I enjoy eating here, it means something--probably that the fish is fresh and clean enough not to bother a squeamish sushi novice. However the seafood Pai Thai was large for two to share and very delicious. My boyfriend and I ate at Sushi Koshi the last time we went out to dinner and we fell in love. I had to try the Batman roll, and he had to try the Godzilla roll, because we're so partial to the characters. We both loved them. We also got a sashimi platter and it was the freshest fish we have gotten while out, all of the fish tasted like what they were and the flavors were strong. We do wish there was a spicier roll on the menu but still an amazing place. The dining experience is a little rushed and you are tightly packed in with other customers but still an amazing place! Sushi Koshi offers by far the best sushi around - and I'm comparing my review to sushi restaurants all over the US and Canada. Every time my husband and I walk in to the restaurant we are greeted with the most friendly staff you'll ever meet. The restaurant is quaint, the service is always exceptional and the sushi is to die for...we literally exhale with pleasure every time we take that first bite. The restaurant offers a mixed rice sushi which is a blend of white, brown and black rice - once you have this, plain old white rice on sushi just doesn't cut it. We absolutely love the Star Roll, Lobster Roll, actually all of their Special Rolls are amazing! It's a BYOB and that's always a bonus. Hands down, the VERY BEST sushi we've ever had! read more

went with a few friends early saturday night. its byob we brought a few beers and they gave us some cups to pour them in. the service was excellent. the restaurant was empty so we requested some songs and the wait staff complied with our requests. the staff is very friendly. i had the chirashi and my friends all had the sashimi bibimbap. the chirashi was only okay. whenever i go to a new sushi place i like to order the chirashi first. the portions were large. the fish was okay, cuts were quite large. no pickled vegetables, no shiso leaves. horseradish wasabi. the sashimi bibimbap is the same price as the chirashi. i would just get the bibimbap next time. came with assorted vegetables, avocado, seaweed and chopped sashimi. we had an excellent time. 5 stars read more

My boyfriend ordered me some food from this place as a surprise lunch and I was excited to get the food but not excited to taste it upon sight. The food was presented pretty terribly it looks dry and unappetizing (the sushi ),It came with a salad that I didn't recognize (again my boyfriend order for me) it was covered in what looked like a slimy pale orange mayo and had chunks of fish and other stuff I couldn't recognize in it . It just looked gross. Then I looked in the other box and it had what looked like tostadas with fish and avocado. it was covered in that same slimy pale orange mayo ,the mystery mayo !! As I bit into the yucky looking bootleg version of a fish tostada it was warm, slimy, fishy, oily and disgusting. I instantly took one bite and wanted to throw up. I didn't even eat the ugly salad cuz it was covered in the same luke warm mayo. Now the sushi.... First off the sushi was packed in a styrofoam container with plenty of space to move around and it did. My sashimi and sushi rolls were all over each other including the ginger and wasabi! It was a mess. Then to my further disappointment the rice was hard! I wanted to instantly puke! How old is this rice? Why is it hard ? It was just the worst sushi I've ever had ! I thanked my sweet boyfriend for the gesture but wished he would've saved the $35.00 he spent on overpriced garbage! I really think people were paid for their good reviews on this place. It's just terrible. I'm not a picky eater and I love sushi so this was just torture. I will never eat here again! Save your money. read more

This place was really something special. But i can only give it 3 stars because my girlfriend did not like it. Our go to restaurant in the area for sushi is aki sushi in bloomfield. Sushi Koshi had some bugs flying around and the service was slow. My girlfriend could not eat the sushi and it made her gag. I personally quite enjoyed it. read more

All in all, the sushi here was very good, but the service was horrendous. My friend and I walked in and were told to wait just a few minutes. There were two four-person tables open at the time, but we understood that they were trying to give us a two-person table, so we waited. Every 5 minutes or so they would come over and tell us "just a few more minutes". We were waiting for about 20 minutes before they eventually sat us at one of the 4-person tables that was open when we first arrived. About 10 minutes after they sat us, they came over and asked us to get up because a 4-person party had arrived, so we got up and waited for another 10 minutes before being seated again at a 2-person table. After we finally got our table, the service was still not great, and they brought my friend the wrong order. All in all, I'm not sure I would return. read more
