I am updating my review, as Nori has improved considerably and I have been very pleased with the quality of their sushi/sashimi, rolls, and other dishes. While not in the upper echelon of sushi restaurants, Nori does a very respectable job of presenting good Japanese cuisine and their service is excellent. We ordered steak teriyaki, chicken teriyaki & tonkatsu & had it delivered. Definitely disappointed as we've had these dishes at other Japanese restaurants. The beef was in chucks & was tough. The sauce was a little bland & for the price the portions were small. The chicken was ok but I've had better. The Tonkatsu is a breaded pork cutlet with a tasty sauce that was the best tasting. Once again Nori has provided us with a fantastic meal. Although they remain a strictly take-out operation (at least for now), their to-go platters are plated beautifully and are consistently fresh and delicious. I'm frankly amazed they don't get more praise on Yelp. Tonight we ordered the Sushi and Sashimi for Two. We also got a Perfect Rainbow Roll, which we've had before and like quite a bit. And because you never can have too much sushi, we added an order of ikura sushi (salmon roe), and three extra orders of sashimi (yellowtail, white tuna and salmon). One of the things we like about Nori is how accommodating they are to special requests. Normally sashimi comes two pieces to an order, but we had three people, so they happily offered to cut each order into three pieces. This way, we all got a piece of each order. This would seem a simple thing, but more than one restaurant has declined to do it. That made us appreciate them doing it even more. They also substituted the fruit that came in one roll for avocado at our request. Additionally, they included extra ginger and wasabi, all at no extra charge. Two salads and two cups of miso soup came with the meal. The final tab was just over $100. That's not what I'd call a cheap dinner, but it was for three people, and compared to what you'd get for that price from other Japanese restaurants in the area, it's a bargain. I can't recommend Nori highly enough. I do have one piece of advice for when you go there. Parking can be a bit of a challenge, so allow an extra few minutes for that. You might have to circle the block once or twice. Don't let that deter you though. It's worth it! read more

Went for Monday-Saturday Lunch Special Food - 5/5. The salad has a tasty dressing with crisp vegetables. The clear soup was super bland almost to the point of tasting like water; I definitely recommend avoiding it and getting the miso soup instead. The fried items here are really good! The gyoza, banana and shrimp tempura all had really crispy, golden brown skins with a soft inside. The sushi rolls are firm and delicious. Service - 4/5. Friendly and efficient. Service was quick. First test stop for some suburbia sushi in the Caldwells. I really have to say, this place knocked it out of the park for me for a local take out spot. Already better than any of my local Hoboken take out spots. The salmon skin rolls were crispy perfection, and the spicy salmon was tender without being overly mushy or mayonnaisey. The bento box is also a fantastic deal with a ton of food including the protein, some tempura, California roll, dumplings / shumai, noodles, soup, and salad. The space itself is / was a little bit dated, they are actually closed for renovations from 7/11/18 to 8/14/18. Sashimi so succulent and fish so fresh, Nori made for a fab sushi sesh. I've gotten take out from Nori on several occasions and it has been consistently fresh and delicious. I truly appreciate the rice to roll ratio. I'm not a fan when there is too much rice, and Nori really expertly rices their rolls. The amount of the fish in the rolls is also done well. I moved to Caldwell a little over a year ago from Montclair. I have been at Nori in Montclair and just thought it was ok. I have been searching for a good sushi place in this area and have been frustrated. So, since I tried the Nori in Montclair, this was the last sushi place that I tried. It still doesn't compare to Daimatsu in Mountainside. But, in this area, this is the best sushi that I have had. It is 3.5 instead of four. For whatever reason, this is better than the Montclair site. I would love to see them add some Tuna toro to the menu and upgrade the quality of the uni. read more

This was my first time visiting nori in Caldwell. I've been to both the Montclair and wayne locations several times. This location did not disappoint. Went for the lunch special...great price for a large amount of food. The donkey kong roll is my favorite. The hot fired banana on top is delicious even though it sounds like an odd combination. Eh, as someone who LOVES sushi. this one is just okay. nothing spectacular. I was craving sushi and wanted to get some for dinner but it was almost 9pm so thank goodness this place was open. Parking is only street parking but it's not too bad since it was after the prime time so not a lot of people were there. Seating is pretty decent and the décor isn't bad. My sister and I sat at the bar. The waitress came after the sushi chef told her that someone came in. We literally, ordered, ate, and left all within the hour (pretty quick service since we were the one other group there). The sushi was okay, decent, but unlike other sushi places, this place (even though they were closing) didn't give us extra food which was a little bit eh. We did get three rolls between us but my sister was still hungry (the rolls are pretty small-even the special rolls). Anyways, I'm glad I got to check this place out, pricing is decent ($10/11 for a special roll isn't bad at all) but the quality shows for it. If you're craving sushi but don't care where you get it, this is the place for you! read more

This place deserves 0 stars! Poor customer service, you wont even get greeted by the owner!!! The owner decided to make my food without washing his hands and while he was talking on the phone. I asked him to wash his hands, he looked at me angrily. Then I said, no problem...just give me my money back so I can get some sushi from a couple of dozen other places around town. At first he tried to give me a fight, saying that he made the food already so I cant get a refund. Then I argued and asked him to show me the sign that says no refund...He snatched my bank card to give me a refund...then he said "Dont you ever come back here again!" Another favorite of mine when in my old hometown of West Caldwell. They have so many really great rolls along with the traditional favorites. I love...kiwi shrimp, tom's, knockout, verona, snoopy to name a few. It's usually fairly easy to get a table but maybe on a Friday or Saturday night calling ahead for prime dinner time is a good idea. As deliveries go, this was by far the worst dining experience I've ever had. Considering the $90 bill for a meal for four people, my family and I were hoping for a delicious meal. Unfortunately, the meal was anything but enjoyable. The sushi rolls were tiny and flavorless. I could barely decipher what fish was actually inside each roll. One was so stale tasting, we threw it in the garbage after one bite. The hibachi and teriyaki meals, both $18 each, looked like side dishes at most. There were so few vegetables, you could count them at a glance. I won't even go into detail on the "miso soup," which was basically glorified ocean water. When I called to express my disappointment, I was not met with any sense of urgency to solve the issues at hand. We've heard for years that people like Nori so we finally gave it a try a few weeks ago (since our favorite restuarant, Tomo's Cuisine shut down in September). All I can say is that we will not be back. The service is very pleasant, but the food was not good at all. Nothing had any real taste. If I closed my eyes, it was hard to tell the difference between the salmon, yellowtail, tuna, etc. Everything was tasteless. I love to try different places but I was disappointed. The amount of food for the $50 order was surprisingly small for the Hibachi meals as compared to other places, and taste just okay. The online order form states as follows: "HIBACHI KITCHEN DINNERS Including Soup, Salad, Shrimp Appetizer, Vegetable, Fried Noodle" I ordered two extra miso soups and two Hibachi meals. As far as soups, we received only the miso soups. Now, there was no option to order soup OR salad. Upon calling, they noted that they just decided to give salad and it was a choice of soup or salad and not as stated online or on their menu. Is this not false advertisement? This was an unfortunate event and sorry to say that I will not be ordering from here again. read more

This is my favorite restaurant by far. I have been coming here with my fam for years on a monthly basis. The small restaurant has an intimate ambiance. Like many sushi places, you can watch the guys making your sushi. Nori is very consistent. I can always go there and find just what I'm looking for. It's like my comfort food. The servers are so sweet and the service is great. Some of my favorite dishes are the Tiger rolls, the Mango Shrimp rolls, and their chicken teriyaki is excellent. Of course, the miso soup and house salad are also excellent (the creamy house dressing is so good I could probably drink it with a straw). My only issues are the Spicy Tuna isn't spicy enough for me, and the beef dishes can sometimes be tough. The take-out is just as good, but eating at the restaurant just adds a something special. The menu is a bit pricy, but I think it's definitely worth it. I haven't found a sushi place that does it quite as well as Nori's. By the way, I have been to the Montclair location, and I prefer the Caldwell location. I would definitely recommend Nori to anyone who is looking for great sushi. read more

I never walked out of a restaurant feeling angry like this. Yes, anger is the word. There are just too many things that was wrong with Nori. I'm not sure if the positive reviewers are confusing this restaurant with another Japanese restaurant with the same name in Monclair. The food was not just subpar, it was plain bad. And as a disclaimer, I don't consider myself picky in terms of food. My $13.95 nabeyaki udon was worse than my $3 frozen udon I got from mitsuwa... in fact it ddn't even compare, frozen udon wins 100 times over. Seemed like they just threw udon and some random veggie in water and boil it. That about sums it up. Ok, what about their sushi, you ask. I'm sorry but it's just not good. It's what I would call rubber-soysauce-wasabi. Fish is not fresh and have no taste. The bad didn't end there. The daikon radish that came with the sushi was spoiled. This tells me that the daikon was not freshly prepared, but probably stored in the fridge for several days. And as you all know, daikon spoils fast, and that's what they served to us. Really Nori, have you tasted what you're serving to your customers? They most definitely did not. ITS NOT RIGHT TO SERVE PEOPLE JUNK. Not for any price, and Nori is not cheap. After all that, service was unprofessional, interior smelled moldy. I don't know how they have customers at all. Again, YOU DON'T OPEN A RESTAURANT AND SERVE PPL JUNK AND EXPECT TO MAKE MONEY. Nori, you destroyed a perfectly sunny and happy sunday afternoon for me. I won't eat here ever again, not even if they pay me to eat here. I am not a fan of the Nori in Montclair, but the one in Caldwell is excellent in my book! Not only is the service good and the food great, but we always have fun with the waitress. She remembers what we want to eat from our previous visits. I LOVE the Teriyake and Hibachi platters, the Wasabi Shrimp is GREAT! We also love the rolls and we're pretty fussy. I love the Donkey Kong rolls and my wife gets a special concoction which the cook makes for us every time without any discussion and it's always perfect! read more

This is my and my boyfriend's favorite place for sushi. It's a good 20-minute drive for us, but we'll happily make it each and every time. We both love the wide selection of rolls they have there, particularly ones with different fruit combinations, and I personally love the fact that they have numerous cooked rolls since I am not a fan of raw fish and traditional sushi. My favorite rolls are the Sunflower, the Dumbo, the Firecracker, and anything with mango, kiwi, avocado, and the crunchy peanut topping that they serve on some rolls. I've also tried their chicken teriyaki and their noodles, and both are yummy. We know there is a Montclair branch of this restaurant, but we prefer the Caldwell branch. The service is friendly and attentive, and the place is small and busy, but you never feel crowded or rushed. This is a great place for a small, romantic dinner or a fun night out with friends--we've done both here. And probably will again soon. :-) read more
