Sushi Ikumi impressed me with its incredibly fresh seafood and thoughtful service. The staff were attentive without being overbearing, and the minimalist setting made the focus all about the food. Everything tasted clean and delicate. It is on the pricey side, but if you value quality and experience, it's worth it.
Incredible sushi. This place has great ambiance and is an awesome all around omakase place. 17 courses total. 3 appetizers, 11 nigiri pieces, one roll, one soup and one dessert. Definitely didn't leave hungry at the end. Would come back.
The courses were generally good, as was the service. I found that I left more full than I usually do from omakase places, which was a plus. The service was also good - nice pace and they were very kind about letting us try a number of different sakes until we settled in the bottle we wanted. Also loved the cute sake glass selection you got to choose from. The food was generally pretty good. My favorite dish was the first course, which was a lobster and egg dish. The fish was okay but I was disappointed that there were no salmon, Arctic char, or scallop pieces, which are generally my favorite. I also didn't love that there were so many fishy mackerel-type dishes, which I usually do not like. If I'm being very picky, the uni was tiny in size, the Ebi was a little off color and taste, and the miso soup was not great (had a weird bitter taste). We were celebrating a birthday so they put a candle in our dessert, which was thoughtful. Overall, not bad. Just wish they would modify the sushi selection to include scallop and salmon or Arctic char!
My bf took me here for our anniversary back in June! We were debating between two types of sake to get and the Chef offered us samples of both! So kind. (We decided on the Born Gold, which was smooth) Their sake glasses and carafe was beautiful! I loved that the chef cut all the fish in real time, it was amazing to watch. All the fish was fresh and delicious. This time around, a lot of the pieces (aka more than one haha!) were more 'fishy' than I like. I typically don't like mackerel, gizzard shard, etc. But these pieces were okay considering I don't like them to start. I do like that the Chef makes the fish stand out on its own. No extra sauces or garnishes needed. Oh also loved how the ginger was sliced a little thicker rather than the typical thinly sliced version. We ended the meal with some ice cream. Chef also prepared a little dessert plate with a candle to celebrate our anniversary. Lovely experience!
The fish selection was good at Sushi Ikumi. If you prefer raw fish in your omakase, this is the place for you. There were 4 appetizers and 12 nigiri, dessert. They were all very fresh and prepared very well by the chef. The dinnerware was also very pretty with the sushi together. We loved all the fish selection but if I have to neat pick, I think the rice was under cooked, and the chef was a bit heavy on the soy sauce. I would recommend asking the chef to be light on the soy sauce. The ambiance and service were great. They were very attentive and polite. It was a pleasure to eat here. The price is about $240 pp.
My husband took me here for my birthday on a Saturday evening. He told me reservations were always booked so he waited until 12am two weeks prior and scored the only reservation available! We went back in April and the prices were 180$/pp but it looks like the prices have gone up since then. The place is pretty small tucked away in the middle of Soho. It had great ambiance and it was very clean. They have about 10 or so seats and we all started at the same time. This was hands down our favorite omakase experience so far (we've been to a bunch of others in NYC)! They served special cuts of sashimi based on what was in season. Everything was so DELICIOUS! Service was 5/5 - they made sure our water cups never went empty and always asked if we wanted another bottle of sake. The entire dinner took about 2.5 hours but we loved every minute of it! I don't like those omakase experiences where they rush you out right when the hour ends and you end up walking out so hungry even after paying 150$/pp. Chef Jon also gave us a special dessert for my birthday! :) Highly recommended this place and will definitely go back!!!
TLDR: Sushi Ikumi is the sushi bar from Hirohisa. Minimalist, excellent and diverse omakase. Dare I say, one of the best sushi tastings available now? If you're looking for a quality and excellent value omakase, Sushi Ikumi should be on your list. I wanted to write this while it was fresh in my mind. We came back Ikumi tonight for the second time. It was everything I remember and better from the first. It was the one sushi bar that I had been thinking about since we went. It's very rare for me to think about a restaurant that often. The décor is small, intimate, immaculately clean and perfectly minimalist. Value-wise, you're looking at $160pp for three appetizers, fifteen nigiri/sushi courses, a miso soup and dessert. Everyone has their own preference but what I love about Ikumi is it's a unique experience, yet quite traditional, not absurdly expensive, absent are the heavy-handed truffle or foie gras toppings yet absolutely delicious. For me personally, this place has reminds me of some of my favorite omakase experiences consolidated into one. There were those distinctly regional preparations and ultra-focused attention to detail that made me think of Noz. The sushi pieces I had never had before and surprised me like at Cagen but without the picture cards. On both visits, the appetizers were awesome. More enjoyable than you'd expect. From the first visit, a chawanmushi with scallop and lobster. I asked for something other than ikura, I got lobster tomalley which might have been an even better substitute. Deliacate ,soft, creamy and absolutely decadent. Today it was a roll made using Japanese sardines, never saw that before. Last time it was a braised squid that you could have swore was a clam visually but oh so good. I won't run down every single piece but just some standouts, obviously these change seasonally. The gizzard shad (kohada) on both occasions was a mouthful of umami without being overly fishy. The tiger prawn (kuruma ebi) was bouncy, juicy and so delicious. A seared Japanese barracuda (kamasu) topped with rice mixed with sea urchin roe (uni) was especially good. Tonight the horse mackerel (aji) was topped with a bit of ginger/scallion sauce. Even the great amberjack (kanpachi) just shocked me beyond words. Probably the best kanpachi I had ever had. So good, I can barely describe it. One of chef's signature pieces if an Osaka style sushi. Scored mackerel (saba) on top of a rice mixed with shiso, sesame and grated ginger. Wrapped in perfectly crispy seaweed. You'll have a hard time finding this elsewhere. For extras today, a perfectly balanced winter yellowtail (buri). Lusciously yummy, not too fatty and just bursting with flavor. I asked for a piece of seared medium fatty tuna (chu-toro) and instead of serving it to me, he advised against it because the cut today wouldn't come out right. Instead, he offered me a type of snapper. Fatty but the chewiness almost of fluke (hirame). To satisfy my cravings for that fatty profile, he seared a piece of the fin. Oh my, so so so so good. As you can see, I really like this place. This is definitely in my rotation of omakase places with plenty of replay. It may just be, my new favorite sushi-ya period. Reservations are two weeks out, so plan accordingly and you'll be so happy you went. Cheers.
The omakase here is AMAZING. At the price point, you cannot beat the quality or the quantity of Sushi Ikumi. Chef Jon is a humble chef who is selective in his ingredients and offers fresh, delicious pieces that are simple and also full of flavor. I came here expecting nothing and left feeling full and amazed (in the best way possible). I really appreciated his flavorings. The way he flavored the mackerel was delicious - completely cancelling out the fishy-ness of mackerel. I will say that this omakase has a LOOOOT of pieces, so much that I felt like some of the earlier sashimi slices may have been unnecessary. There was only one piece, the prawn, that I felt was a bit lackluster. Everything else was fantastic. My boyfriend even said that the uni here was the best that he's ever had. Even the flow of the dinner made so much sense. Chef Jon also has a "surprise" dessert at the end that blew our minds. Don't want to spoil anything but again, his flavorings are out of this world. Honestly, I was shocked that the omakase was ONLY $150pp. The dinner, I felt, could easily be in the $200 price range or above. Highly recommend!
Booked this place super last minute and heard good things from a friend so was pretty excited! Have been to Hirohisa before and the sashimi quality there was amazing so had high expectations here. There were two chefs, and I believe the main one was catering to the customers on the other end. Personally, prefer to have the main chef whenever I go to omakase, but not something I could control here. He still cut some of the pieces but the other chef made the actual nigiri. Lots of courses and the pieces were on the larger end as well - felt pretty full towards the end and we noticed the party next to us felt the same. Something I did notice at this place was that the shiso leaf was a little overpowering in the pieces that included it. Not a bad thing though. Would've liked to end with tamago on its own, but I guess it came in the roll at the end. Another thing was that they gave pickled radishes (like the ones you get with the sides at korean restaurants) along with the ginger. I usually like them, but it felt weird with the omakase. I think they gave it though since this place seemed a bit more Korean (employees, chefs) than Japanese. We also got a sake to go along with the meal which was a great recommendation by the host. A bit on the sweeter side, as I prefer, but still a bit strong. It came in this super pretty glassware that came from the chef's hometown. Ended with their house persimmon ice cream - very unique in flavor, a bit icy, but enjoyed it nonetheless. They also gave everyone a shot of plum sake at the end. I'm usually not a sake person but this one was really good! Overall, pretty good and not too expensive, especially for how much you get!
Fabulous sushi omakase experience at $220pp. I came in late September with a group of 8 for my sister's birthday. We booked the 8PM seating and it turned out to be a private dinner since there were so many of us (10-seat counter)! The service was phenomenal. Chef Jeong was very hospitable and a wizard with the knife. That being said... If you're looking for a fast-casual experience or sushi pieces that pile on uni, caviar or wagyu, this is not the place. But if you appreciate a more delicate and intricate touch with high quality ingredients, then come to Sushi Ikumi. Not all omakase is the same, which is good, because sometimes you want different things. For Ikumi, I loved that there were a lot of silver-skinned fish or hikarimono. Every piece was also presented beautifully. Till this day, I still think about this meal from time to time. One of our friends actually returned for another dinner within 2 weeks of our visit. I think that for sushi lovers who want to have an omakase experience within this price range, this is a superb option that is not often talked about.
If you're looking for sushi that honors edomae tradition without costing an arm and a leg, Sushi Ikumi is it. The omakases running amok in the NYC market are the $80-$100 type that put pesto on fluke and torch half the dishes and also have crazy fast dance music to get you to eat faster, then there's also the ones for ballers - Nakaji, Shion, Yoshino, etc, where you can easily spend $500 per person. Sushi Ikumi is the perfect in between option for those who want to taste the fish and the delicate mastery of the chef's curing and knife work but still want to be budget conscious ($180 for 16pc omakase). The neta has a luscious firmness to it. The slices are cut thickly, and there's plenty of room to really bite into and savor the texture of the fish. Chef says he cures the fish in a bit less time than usual because he also enjoys the firmer bite. My primary complaint is that I wish there was a bit more rice, but honestly I was full by the end of the dinner. This is one omakase place I'll be recommending and returning to!
Husband bought me here for my birthday dinner. We sat for the first seating and realized we were the only ones there. I was skeptical at first wondering why there was no one else. However, after eating the courses it was very different than the other basic omakase places in a good way. As we were the only 2 people there, the atmosphere felt a bit awkward as it was too quiet in there and the chef did not bother interacting with us either. For around $200 a person before tax and tips, it was a decent amount of serving size. I was very full for a girl.
Super fresh sushi wonderfully prepared by the chef! He is super friendly and asked about our opinions at the end of the session. It was 3 appetizers 15 pieces of sushi, miso soup, and peach ice cream. My favorite had to be the chu toro but they were all delicious! It was a joy watching the chef prepare every piece in front of you and service is quick and efficient. Overall the entire course was 2 hours long, and I left feeling pretty full. Highly recommend if you want some fresh fish!
Just got back from dinner at Sushi Ikumi and really have nothing but good things to say about the food and staff here. Seriously some of the best nigiri and dishes I've had though I'll leave out the details so as not to ruin the surprise. Kind of cool that they serve gizzard shad here too- I haven't been to many spots where that's the case. Dinner at Sushi Ikumi is must in my opinion for anyone who loves sushi and I'll definitely be back read more

Loved my experience at Ikumi. All of the fish was fresh and service was top notch. The sushi rice was delicious and exactly what I look for when coming to a nice omakase. The sake pairing complemented all of the courses extremely well. For the price point, you can't go wrong here. Highly recommend! read more

We got lucky with a walk in and was able to be seated on a Saturday night. 10/10 omakase in terms of quality and taste, service was great too. definitely feels very luxurious and exclusive when you're in there. room for abt 10 ppl only and everyone is on the same course. would be 5/5 in all avenues, but just one note was that they told us it'd be $195/person initially then halfway thru they said it was $220/person. that was just kinda eh. but i mean, I would say it was very delicious. ~15 courses including tea and ice cream at the end, several appetizers, and the best quality fish. yum! read more

Sister restaurant of Michelin-star kaiseki restaurant, Hirohisa, serving Michelin-star level, high end sushi omakase by Chef Jongin Jeong, who previously worked at Hirohisa and Japan. Already dined here four times, just to show how highly I regard the sushi omakase here. Also, incredible value at $180 pp. Wonderful service Highest recommendation : 10 calendars read more

Wonderful little omakase with the most inviting and kind workers. Every single piece was a joy, but my favorite part I have to say is the squid! It was such a nice surprise to taste squid that was so tasty and soft- they did not over do the flavors either. The rice was also exceptional! I hate the sugary taste that sometimes overwhelms the entire sushi, and this was perfect. Also love that they give you a bit of an appetizer before the sushi begins- well worth the price. Can't quite think of a reason not to give this cozy and beautiful omakase 5 stars! read more

Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5 During my most recent trip to NYC in January, I wanted to take a gamble and try a new place for omakase. I did a lot of research before deciding on a location and chose Ikumi based on the reviews and the chef's experience. I'm glad I did! It was my first time going to omakase alone, but ended up being a phenomenal evening. The staff members were welcoming and the other guests were very outgoing and friendly. I was shocked by the first dish - uni! Usually this is served towards the end of the meal and certainly not as the first bite. However, it was served with an egg custard and it was very delicious. Great first impression. The dishes that followed were mostly traditional nigiri style sushi and all were delicious. The cuts of fish were fresh and very well-prepared. Kuddos to Chef Jon for his hard work to keep up the standards of NYC omakase. Very much worth the price I paid; $180 is a steal for the quality of fish I received. I also appreciate Chef Jon's recommendation for a quality omakase restaurant in Dallas, TX. My only critique of the evening was that some of the dishes were over seasoned with wasabi and sauce. I loveeeee both but when I have omakase I prefer lighter so that I can truly appreciate the less powerful flavors in each dish. I made some great friends that night and hope to see them at other omakase locations around NYC! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for high quality omakase in Manhattan. read more
Sushi Ikumi is the best priced omakase in NYC even after the recent price hike from $150 to $180. Chef Jon is a young, friendly, humble, and talented chef who does his best to put a smile on his customers' faces. Last night, I had the pleasure of taking two friends to Sushi Ikumi. Chef Jon (somehow) remembered me fondly from my first visit a number of months ago and we got along well throughout the evening. He seated us right in front of him - the best seats in the house. From seasonal buri sashimi and beautifully prepared silver fish nigiri to a host of signature dishes like his Saba roll and futomaki, he blew us away. Chef Jon spoke to us about his sourcing of ingredients from Japan. He is connected to a couple of suppliers in Kyushu and Tokyo (Toyosu) who are able to supply him with high quality, seasonal fish that only the top 5-10 restaurants in New York have access to. He introduced us to pieces from Nagasaki, Hokkaido, and other regions, and served us his favorite Boston tuna (aged akami and toro from just behind the collar). Sushi Ikumi checks all of the boxes - delicious food, creative menu, well sourced fish, rockstar chef, and filling. Sushi Ikumi is in my top 3-5 favorite sushi restaurants in New York and I hope to visit many more times in the near future. Sushi Ikumi, Sushi Noz (Ash Room), and Sushi Ginza Onodera (lunch) are the perfect restaurants for both patrons new to high end sushi and those with experience who are looking to have consistent, well-priced meals. read more
Unassuming spot on Sullivan street. When we walked in, it felt like part of the neighborhood. The space felt special without being over the top. We were a couple, there were two families of three, and one solo diner. The chefs choice of fish is very interesting. He uses many fish that are like saba such as spanish mackerel and kohada. I enjoy these type of fish so you won't get any complaints from me. He doesn't do anything gimmicky like pull out a blowtorch or sprinkle on gold. He does slice everything to order and incorporate more sophisticated knife cuts to add to the flavor/mouthfeel of his sushi. Also, he's got someone in the back constantly producing small fresh batches of sushi rice which makes the food especially ala minute. At one point, he measured out the water to cook another batch of rice during the meal. I would recommend this omakase to someone who wants good value and is really there for classic sushi. Service is good and attentive without being too fussy. The sushi chef/owner is young though you'd never know it from just tasting his food. It'd be really interesting to see how he develops read more

My partner treated me to omakase for my birthday, and this place did not disappoint. Each piece seems to get better than the next and it's a no frills or fusion spot. The chef made a great sake recommendation based on our preference (on the sweeter side) and at the end, they treated me with a special piece of cheesecake and matcha green tea! read more

I'll preface this review saying that Ikumi has elements of Kyoto style sushi, which may not be for the consumer expecting the more common Edomae. There were mackerel courses, which my friends found too fishy for their taste. With that out of the way, the quality and attention to detail here was top notch. Chef Jeong is very knowledgeable and prepared every piece very well. To start off, the third course was a perfectly grilled piece of mackerel. Despite the fishiness of mackerel, the piece was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth. The best grilled piece of fish I've had. I especially enjoyed the Chicken Grunt, one of my favorite white fleshed fishes (a summertime staple). The Uni here was also one of the best tasting Uni that I've had. The right mixture of sweat and creamy without too much overpowering brinyness. I also liked the Anago as I'm a huge fan of eel. As for the negatives, I am rather disappointed by the lack of Chu Toro in the course. I consider it a staple in any omakase. Fatty tuna really just speaks for itself. I was also disappointed that there was no Unagi in the course as it is a much tastier eel than Anago. Everything was wrapped up with a nice bowl of handmade red bean ice cream. It was solid. Overall, I think that this place is very high quality in terms of preparation and attention to detail, but believe that it would benefit from introducing some of the more staple elements. Definitely check it out if you like mackerel (it's done well here). read more

Fabulous omakase spot with authentic style of sushi/nigiri. At $150 it's very reasonably priced, chef and service staff were on point. Small place with maybe spots for 3 groups at a time, counter only. Overall really impressed with the attention to detail and balance of flavour between fish and rice. Not very well known yet, but that will likely change soon so go check it out now. Score: 9/10 Comparables: way better than Kissaki, slightly better than omakase by mitsu read more

Probably one of the best omakase experiences I've had so far this year! The chef also prepared a small little tiramisu cake for my birthday which was really sweet, much appreciated. I loved every dish/sushi piece that was served. The warm egg with uni was a nice appetizer to start off with (super cold that day lol). Some of my favorite pieces has to be the squid, red clam and the sea bass which was super soft and melted in your mouth. I really enjoyed the giant slice of futomaki with the soup! That was def new for me. read more

Just had an AMAZING dinner with chef Jon . He is extremely down to earth, humble ,sweet and talented. I've had quite a lot of omakase experiences so for me it's more about connection and the positive energy . He and the two lovely hostesses (kk and Dia) greeted me right away and kept checking if I had a good time . We had a nice and warm conversation during my dinner and what made this dinner more wonderful was the food -absolutely delicious. I don't usually like uni and this was the first time I really enjoyed it ! Such a life changing moment . Overall 10/10 for the food 1000/10 for Jon kk and Dia . Go help yourself get a reservation here thank me later and say hi to Jon for me :) read more
Despite very few reviews on yelp, I decided to try this place after extensive research on google. This place is very new (opened on Nov 2020, but had to close down due to pandemic and reopen on the Valentine Day, 2021), so no wonder the reviews are not there. First of all, the server and Chef Jeong will welcome you wholeheartedly and the place is very clean and neat. There are two times available (6:00 PM slot and 8:30PM slot if I remember correctly) and price point is $150 pp. This may sound bit pricey, but the sushi experience you will get here definitely far-exceeds the money you will pay for. Chef Jeong magically maximizes the taste of the fresh fish by adding perfectly matching ingredients to the fish. What really surprised me was that he used Mackerel (widely known for its fishy taste) for two sushi plates, but they both didn't taste fishy at all and were extremely yummy. This place by far was the best omakase experience. I really want to keep this place as a hidden gem, but want others to try the amazing experience I had here. Highly recommend checking this place out:)! read more
