Sad to see some of the reviews. My daughter and I went here after a softball game and we were pleasantly surprised to find this little treasure in Newberg. We both did the lunch special, which was 2 rolls, miso and cucumber salad. OMG Delish!! They gave you 6 to ate pieces in each roll you chose. They have so many rolls to choose from it is crazy. The cucumber salad is the best I have ever had (I know not much to a cucumber salad, but what ever they do to theirs it really is fantastic). My rolls were so fresh, that when my daughter was done devouring hers, she decided to try and finish off mine (she got 1 and a chopstick to the finger). Every time we have a game in Newberg this is our go to place. If you like sushi you will like this place. read more

We have been there twice so far. Once for lunch and a most recently for dinner with visiting family. We went in at the perfect time before the dinner rush right after the afternoon reopening. We were seated quickly and drink orders and appetizer orders were done quickly. When the drinks came our orders for Ramen, Udon and various rolls were placed. Were were impressed that the Gyoza came out first and when we finished that off the ramen and the rolls all his the table for a good variety to feast on. Very fresh tasting and tightly made rolls. Nothing fell apart and was extremely easy to enjoy. I did not like the plastic chopsticks they use there as the ramen was extremely hard to eat with them, so you had to focus more on your sticks skills and not the other diners. I wish I would have asked for some good old wooden or bamboo chopsticks. read more

I've had sushi from many different places all over the country and this is one of my least favorites. It might be right for some people, but I don't think I'll be going back. Edit because I got very aggressive feedback from the owners: I personally do not care for all you can eat sushi as I usually can't eat enough for it to be worth the price, but yes Momijis in town has it and I do in fact think their flavor is better but I wasn't going to compare them in my original review because I didn't want to detract any attention from this business but since they brought Momijis up I don't mind. I got a spider roll yesterday which on the menu said it had crab, cucumber, and avocado. So I thought I'd give it a shot and I'm not crazy about raw fish. But when I got it all I could taste was the iceberg lettuce they stuffed in as filler. The crab and avocado weren't even noticable over the harsh crunch of bland lettuce. There was absolutely no flavor to it, I think a dab of spicy mayo would have helped tremendously. But as is it was the blandness of it reminded me of the time I did attempt an all you can eat and overdid it and by the end the food just tasted like regret and mush. On the other hand my husband did order 3 rolls and they were much better than mine. But again they weren't our favorite. I wasn't trying to be rude when posting my original review, merely trying to offer the input of people who have been lucky enough to enjoy sushi from places such as San Diego, LA, Hawaii, Boston, New York, and Nova Scotia among many others as my husband is a massive sushi enthusiast. read more

I just happened to come across this place while driving and apparently they've just opened! So I thought why not review this place for both their sushi and their ramen! First time walking in, you'll be welcomed by caring staff, bright colors of wallpaper and decorations, as well as the good quality China and furnitures. I thought I was in for a diamond in the rough of Newberg. I ordered their pork chashu ramen and was welcomed with a very alluring aroma upon being set in front of me. Omg... I can't wait! But upon digging into the bowl, I was surprised at the uoddles of noodles that laid dormant under the soup. Even more disappointing is that the noodles weren't cooked thoroughly. Usually you'd toss the noodles as they are cooking in the hot water. This was not the case as you'd come across some clumps that were stuck together. This bowl took a turn for the worst as I bit into the pork. Unclean was the static thought that went through my mind. Upon closer inspection, the slices of meat was so thin too... Usually upon eating this delicious morsel, your mouth would be washed over with meaty, umami magic. This was unfortunately not the case here, but rather lack of prep work to boil off the scum and add bits of seasonings. The meal got increasing disappointing as the soup didn't retain the rich flavors that normally associate itself with good Japanese ramen. The ramen egg was an absolute give away to this restaurant's lack of attention to details or love for the ingredients. Hard boiled and without marinade. No custard like texture. No sweet, tangy, soft egg whites. No happiness. Literally all you need is a timer and marinade the eggs over a few hours to a day. Come on!!!!!!! I also ordered the Philadelphia Roll to review their sushi dish. Apparently no care was put into the aesthetics by the sushi chef as there were smears of the cream cheese all over the cuts of smoked salmon, leaving the unappealing thought of whether or not the fish was spoiled... Taste was as you'd expect at any other 3 star restaurant Overall I'm very disappointed with this restaurant. Maybe I chose the wrong dishes. Maybe the chef is still being trained. Maybe I came too early of their grand opening. These are all excuses at the end of the day to the dismal result that lay in front of me. I'll try this place again upon other yelper's reviews. But in the meantime, I will not suggest this restaurant if you're wanting amazing Japanese cuisine. But instead, if you're looking to begin you're journey into Japanese cuisine and Portland's too far, this place will be an alright starting place. read more

I called in a take-out order of a chirashi bowl on Valentine's day at 6:50pm. I was told they were busy, so likely 45 minutes. I told them that was fine, I wasn't in a huge rush and figured they may be slammed. I showed up a couple of minutes early at 7:30, and saw the restaurant was pretty empty. There were a total of 4 tables taken, one of them also waiting for a take-out order. I was told 10 more minutes because they were so busy. I figured 3 tables being served wasn't particularly a rush, but 10 more minutes wasn't a big deal.i paid and sat down. 10 minutes came and went. The other guy waiting to pick up his take-out got a little flustered and asked how much longer, and was told 10 minutes. He ended up waiting about another 25. I finally received my food at 8:13pm. It was good, but not something I would be willing to wait that long for again. Waiting almost an hour and a half for slices of raw fish with a scoop of rice was a bit much. I was given a $5 off coupon for my wait. But seeing as I am not often in the area, and don't usually have that long to wait for food, I will likely not be back. read more

We came in just a few days after opened. They seemed to be under staffed but I do not blame them as they are still new and trying to get things figured out. It took us about 5-10 minutes to be seated. After that everything seemed to go smoothly. The waitress got our drinks and took our order promptly. I got a roll, miso soup and a salad. The soup and roll where great! When the salad came I was actually disappointed. Normally at Japanese restaurants you get a ginger/ vinegar dressing but this was not the case here. My wife ordered a box and loved the katsu chicken! She tried her Miso soup which was new to her and like that as well. Overall the quality was pretty good and the pricing was reasonable. read more

I was stationed in Tokyo Bay in Japan for a year. Sushi Hunter in Newberg, Oregon is My way of Visiting Japan again. I Absolutely Love the Sushi and Sake here. There are a few Chinese restaurants in Newberg, but not any Japanese ones until Sushi Hunter came. Their menu is broad with many Sushi and Sashimi choices. Great Japanese beer and Sake for very taste. Please come try out some Tempura, Sushi, Miso Ramen, or Teriyaki Chicken. So usually we have a good experience here. However, tonight all of our "fresh" (not fried) rolls were warm! Not cold. I watched the sushi chef makes rolls with the door open to all the refrigerated fish. We've noticed a decline in most aspects of this place. Sushi fresh, rice not so fresh. Ambience upon arriving was nice; quiet with dim lighting. I have one complaint... their evening hours are 4:30-9:30 and at 8:35 they turned up the lights to brighter than bright and brought out brooms etc. even though there were still 3 tables eating! My Sushi had just come out after a 25 minute wait. So i spent $60 on a meal I ate under practically spotlights with a broom and dust pan leaned up against the table right across from mine. I ordered the ramen to which the broth tasted like dirty feet. Like most restaurants would do is change it out with no issues. BUT the boss apparently told our server (the server was amazing) that he can't take it off the check or switch it out for something else? I get it if it was sushi or something that had major costs involved but for a veggie ramen with just broth, veggies, and noodles isn't a large loss. Very disappointed. read more

Back again after a year, still a great place to eat with a varied menu and quick friendly service. Unlike many small restaurants this place is very clean and the food has authentic flavors. My wife loves their miso soup. We will be back again in the spring! read more

Food is average. Had the beef teriyaki, the meat was tender but it was kinda salty, so was the fried rice. It's also a bit pricey ($16 for rice and beef teriyaki). Service though is friendly. read more

I was just looking for a quick bite to eat & I was really craving Japanese food. I ordered the chicken udon & it was great but the shrimp tempura scared me. It was a lot of batter & idk if the shrimp was fresh but the shrimp literally melted in my mouth.. never had that happen to me before & I stopped eating the shrimp. Overall the udon is okay but I wouldn't recommend the shrimp. read more

I had been wanting to try this place for a long time. I can be a little critical of sushi after spending a lot of time in Japan. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. It was a Friday night after 7 and they had aot of customers. I ordered tempura soft sheel crab, arrived in a few minutes. I also ordered a 16 piece plate. More than one person needs. I was not done with the crab before the plate arrived. The food was fresh and well prepared and the presentation was very good. I highly recommend Sushi Hunter and will return soon. read more

We ate here last week and the sushi lacked flavor big time. It was so bland. But the bigger issue was the service l. I asked our server if they have soy wrap instead of seaweed and she said yes, so I ordered my Cali roll with soy. When it came, it has seaweed instead. I responded that I had ordered the soy wrap and she wanted to argue with me. I told her that we just had a conversation about it when you took my order, she rolled her eyes and walked away. Mind you, we were the only people in the restaurant. She came back with it shortly after, didn't say a word. When our check came, she charged us for both rolls- the one they messed up on and the one I ordered. My husband and I go here maybe once every few months and the owners recognize us each time and give us the best service. The dishes are always delicious and creatively plated. We are excited there is an Izakaya in town. I don't eat fish but my family loves Sushi. I had the Ramen and they each had a bento box. Prices are good, great menu, great service. I am looking forward to Kirin once they have their liquor license (next week). I recommend checking them out!! My daughter's favorite was the California Toll, my boyfriend's favorite was the gyoza. For the price, wonderful ramen and fresh tasting sushi. A bit inconsistent at times, maybe different chef, and the green salad is not good, but thats not why you eat at places like this so I'm not too concerned. My favorite place to get ramen, I highly recommend the pork broth ramen. read more

Don't waste your time. We have been here several times and it is always something. Not sure why we keep giving them another try. One time they would not honor their Facebook special. Another time they gave us wrong roll and would not replace it for the correct one. Today was the icing on the cake ... they close at 3:00, we walked in at 2:40 and they refused to serve us. A good 3 1/2 stars...Came here for the first time as we live in Newberg, and there isn't really any decent sushi close to home...went with a sashimi platter(how else do you judge a sushi place?), and was very surprised. The tuna was pretty firm and great taste, the salmon was the best, and the white fish was just ok...but all in all fresh and tasty. Maybe a bit overpriced, but pretty much all good fresh Made sush is overpriced around here. read more

I was anxious to try them out. I ordered by phone and was told it would be 20 minutes. I waited 20 minutes and went over. I paid for the order and the employee told me it would be at least 20 minutes more! It ended up being 50 minutes total. I took my order home, opened it and realized it was not my order... none of it. They had given me someone else's order. I called and asked for a refund. The employee said she'd have to get manager approval, which didn't happen. I called the next day to follow-up. A different employee took my information and said he needed manager approval. No one called me. I disputed the charge, and will take my business elsewhere. read more
