Found this place while visiting and it was FANTASTIC! Place was clean, and even though it was getting closer to closing, they took our party of 6. Nice people and the orders came out timely. Ordered everything from sushi to the various bowl options and Udon noodles. Tempura was very light and crispy.... exactly how it should be. Forest Grove is lucky to to have SaWa's! Sister restaurant to Syun Izakaya, this place has a much more casual feel with a smaller menu, though they have the sushi rolls in common. They specialize in sushi and donuburi bowls ranging from oyako Don, curry, katusdon, and gyu Don. We came in for lunch and got a little greedy. We ordered Kani cream korokke, kinoko butter salad, tuna poke bowl, and an unagi don. Everything was delicious and the unagi Don was huge! Also bring in a further out location, we noticed prices were a few dollars less than Syun, so that's a plus. Our server seemed like a student - she was kind and kept our waters full. We really liked the wooden tables - it reminded me of a Japanese style cabin. I'd definitely make a stop here again when in Forest Grove! read more

It had really neat wooden tables and lots of fun and beautiful artwork all over the walls. Our server was friendly and efficient. We ordered sunomono, gyoza, tempura udon, and two sushi rolls. The omakase roll was a chef created roll for the day and it had big pieces of tuna and salmon along with shrimp tempura and eel sauce. Absolutely delicious! I love their salmon avocado sushi and the green tea both hot and cold is some of the best I've ever had for plain green tea. They have these delicious little sorbets with amazing flavor, and their hot food is great too. I go here super often. We were looking for a new place for lunch the other day while walking through Forest Grove. Stumbled upon this place. We love Japanese food so we decided to stop. Lots of wood and natural finishings, good lighting, and very clean. We were told we could sit anywhere we liked, so we grabbed a table. We only got water (the drinks I thought were a little expensive $7 I think for a soda), which was fine we love water. I ordered the Philadelphia roll, my wife ordered the Kare Don (vegetable curry), and my son ordered the special which was a shrimp and rice noodle dish. None of us were disappointed in our orders. The Philadelphia roll was huge (8pcs) with a wonderful lightly smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber. My wife was nice enough to let me have a bite of her Kare Don, and I could say without a doubt, one of the BEST Japanese Curry's I've ever had. 10/10 would recommend. I will be back. read more

We ordered the Niku Don which had tender beef over rice with some great shaved veggies, pickled veg and some roasted squash. It was so savory and had a lot of nuanced flavor. We also got 4 rolls to share, our favorite of which was the Zen roll. It was like no roll I've ever had before... it was just fresh and creamy and we will definitely order 2 of those next time. We've ordered off menu, asked for reduced sodium soy sauce, extra wasabi, they are accommodating. I'm shocked I didn't comment in 2019 (I feel like a jerk for not saying something sooner). In PDX, you have options and some need researching. Our options are limited for sushi this far west. The best thing is, you don't have that issue. I've been a long time customer of Syun (Downtown Hillsboro, same owners), which is one of my favorite sushi restaurants on the west coast. So when we heard (quite belatedly actually) that they had opened another restaurant in our own tiny neck of the woods, I had to try it! Friday evening 5:30 we arrived to an empty house, picking a table seat at the windows. For drinks, Wife N. ordered a Scotch Highball (Scotch and Soda) and I ordered an Asahi draft. We just caught the tail end of happy hour so I also ordered a HH Nasu Miso (eggplant in miso glaze). For dinner, Wife N ordered a Tempura and Sashimi combo, and I ordered a Super Deluxe Sushi (Nigiri) platter. Wife's meal came with a side salad (Ginger Miso dressing) and a bowl of Miso. The miso used here is Aka Miso (red miso) instead of Shiro (white) Miso, so the soup and dressing flavor is more hearty. I actually came away liking it better than Syun's. Tough to beat--way to go! Mains arrived and were everything I'd expect from a high end sushi restaurant. Wife's Sashimi and my Sushi were beautifully and artfully prepared. Fish quality and flavor were right up there with the best I've had. Her tempura was flawlessly crisp and left almost no grease on the hands. The sushi platter included 14 pieces of fantastic Nigiri (Salmon, Ahi, Scallop, Snapper and more). Everything was top notch. My only complaint (really, just a nitpick) was I thought the Saba (mackerel) had excellent texture, but it was under-marinated and didn't have a flavor as pronounced as I expected. It was still really good, just not the best ever. The menu is almost identical to their older sister in Hillsboro's--a vast selection of small plates--beef, chicken, tempura, fish, noodles, soups, etc. Sushi only makes up about 20% of their menu, so there are a LOT of cooked dishes here which are sure to satisfy a wide range of palettes and even the raw-fish-averse will find SOMETHING to love here. Everything was fantastic. It's so nice to have a true Japanese-owned sushi place in town and even nicer that it's only a few minutes up the street for me! I would recommend trying their Nasu Miso (miso-glazed eggplant), Seafood Okonomiyaki (a savory dinner pancake), Gyu Tataki (seared beef with Ponzu) and Asari Sakamushi (Clams in Saké broth). Nigiri prices are average for an up-scale sushi place, typically in the $4.50-6.00 range for 2 pieces. Small plates are very reasonable though ($5.00-$12.00) and great for a family sharing 5-6 of them (if you're going "family style" I would recommend 2 plates per person at the table, and everyone will be stuffed and very satisfied.) Cheap dinners and (quite a bit lower quality) sushi can be had at other places in town but SaWa is where the quality is, and you'll pay for it. This particular physical storefront location has been somewhat blighted for restaurants, with 3 different restaurants taking up residence here in the past decade and none lasting longer than a few years. I'm really hoping SaWa lasts. It's exactly what Forest Grove needs! read more

Delicious food- beautiful decor- lots of bright light, windows and high ceilings with brick. I had a mixed drink that had fresh grapefruit juice, lemon and was dangerously delicious as well. My husband got the steak donburi and we all tried some- tender delicious meal. We ordered veggie and shrimp tempura for my son and I to share and three sushi rolls and our favorite was the premium California twist. The philly roll was also yummy. It was the perfect combination of texture and flavor and was gorgeous to look at as well! They have a very nice selection of vegetarian options as well. The meal was served with miso soup and a fresh delicious salad with ginger dressing. The meal was top- notch and it was calm, relaxed and inviting inside the restaurant. This is one of our top finds since moving here from Az! We will return because of the plethora of choices on the menu and the scrumptious food and friendly staff. My only regret is I didn't take more pictures- we ate everything like starving zombies which is also a credit to the establishment- it looked too good to pause for a picture- my husbands donburi bowl came last so we were somewhat less ravenous when it arrived. We've been to this restaurant twice. The first time was as a couple and we had a pleasant time with delicious meals of Danbury & Sushi. The second time we went was with our granddaughters before heading over for a Christmas play. Apparently we were too quick with our delicious food and the staff was just one step away from being rude as we tried to hurry and get our bill paid so we wouldn't be late.
