My grandson and I found ourselves looking for a Sushi "train" Location in McMinnville... He directed me to Sushi Kyo Express on the west end of McMinnville. It's a simple cafe with the conveyor Sushi running around the counter. The conveyor options were limited to Maki Rolls with Raw Tuna and Salmon in a few different varieties. There were a couple with octopus and then lots of cooked options with surimi crab salad, cooked shrimp in different combinations. There were also lots of dessert options and cans of Boba Tea (that my grandson snapped up quickly). It was very affordable and The server was friendly and admitted that the raw fish selections wasn't his favorite. He offered to have an Albacore Nigiri and Hamachi Nigiri put together for me. My daughter and I come for lunch. We like the assortment it offers. You can grab from the conveyer belt or order from the server. They have the fully cooked stuff in case you can't do raw sushi. They also have the traditional gyoza, krab puffs, egg rolls, fried rice, and lots of other dishes. It's very casual. They have counter seats. They also have booths. The service is great and friendly. I'm not sure why I haven't tried this place before!? I enjoy conveyer belt sushi just as much as traditional sushi restaurants. I think the misconception about rotating sushi is that it isn't kept fresh. That was mine at first anyway... We got to SushiKyo before the dinner rush. I'm technically not sure how long the food was spinning around but it looked fresh and more importantly tasted fresh. I love salmon nigiri and theirs just melted in my mouth. The sushi rice was tasty and proportioned well too. There was a good variety of plates rotating and the prices were reasonable. As we were finishing and the normal dinner crowd started arriving (around 6p) they started putting out the fried goodies like wontons and gyoza. I was too full to even consider them so I will definitely have to go back. We got out of there at 15.00 per person for just food. I think based on previous reviews they have stepped up their game. This is just okay food. The sesame balls were fried in some off oil which made them taste inedible. The Veggie roll was okay and the shrimp puff was tasty except for the weird and very soggy wonton base. The The Lemon roll was the best of the bunch with good ingredients and taste. But what the heck was "Krab". Maybe an upscale version for those who want real crab? And please don't water down the MISO. Like Momiji's they are owned and managed by Chinese which seems odd for a sushi restaurant. However, their sushi is excellent. We are new to the area and have tried their food three or four times now. It is consistently good. The sushi is always nice and fresh and beautifully prepared. We have not yet been able to experience dining indoors with this restaurant because of the pandemic but we look forward to that time in the future. We have a lot of experience with Momiji's food in Mcminnville and in Lincoln City (over 10 years worth). Regarding sushi, I think Sushi Kyo Express is every bit as good and maybe a bit better. Their price is better for the sushi items that we like. I hope this review helps our friends who like good sushi. A quick initial review but I have been here multiple times already! It is a clean and well laid out conveyor belt sushi bar. It is small but can probably seat 20 people along the bar and then there are 3 booths that can seat 6 each. The sushi is normally pretty fresh and very good for a sushi bar of this type. The prices are also excellent. I believe the 4 plate price levels are $1.35, 1.75, 2.25, and 2.45. So you can eat your fill of good sushi without killing your wallet. You can also order off the menu and they don't charge any extra fees. Party platters are available but I didn't inquire about the prices on those. They are quick about getting to-go orders ready and they package them well. The staff is also very helpful and friendly which always earns an extra star from me. Don't go in expecting the very best in sushi, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the quality for a small express sushi bar! read more

This place has some of the best Sushi I've ever had, truly. 5 stars JUST for the food, I'd give the food 5 stars honestly. The place is clean and beautiful and the sushi comes out pretty fast. the Salem Roll is the most incredible thing ever, highly recommended. The reason for 2 stars and not 5 however is the service is downright abysmal at times. They're understaffed; the server/wait staff are constantly running to the back and are not at all attentive. Given that this is a self-serve sushi bar that's fine, except they do have the option of ordering specific items or whole rolls, or supposedly you are. The service you get depends on who's there. My friend and I go here maybe twice a month, I wouldn't hesitate to call us regulars, but wow. Sometimes, the service here is just the worst. Examples are usually around ordering. We've ordered the Salem Roll [or two,] before, but sometimes that just seems impossible. One time we had a server full-on tell us no, and refuse to take the order, and told us to just take them off the belt when they came by- but we'd wanted a whole one to split, and we'd ordered it before. The next time we went we didn't have an issue. Another time we ordered sesame balls, because we wanted them freshly made and hot- and the server just went to the other side and grabbed some off the belt that were stone cold. And the most recent incident occurred when ordering a Salem roll again. We'd ordered two- one for each of us- and when the waitress returned she gave us each a single plate with 1/3 of a roll on it- usually they'd serve the whole roll and then give us the stack of plates [3 yellow ones] to represent the price. We got her attention again and tried a second time, I explained, we wanted TWO, WHOLE Salem Rolls, even holding up my hands the general distance apart that the plate it's served on is long. She returned with 3 1/3 plates, instead of the two [whole] ones we ordered. I'm not sure how I could have been more clear, or if they're just determined not to take our money or something, but it's pretty much a crapshoot on if anyone's going go pay attention to you, and a 60/40 on them not understanding or not caring to get your order right. On a side note, one time we were there and another customer was complaining about the price of the grapes there vs the price of the sushi plates [it's about 2/3lb of grapes and an orange slice in a container, it's on one of the middle-line plates,] and he was saying things about the fish costing more than grapes, so why were the grapes more expensive? If somehow you're reading this, Grape Dude, you're an ass. You're an ass and you're bad at math and we made sure to give an extra big tip because the poor wait staff had to deal with you, and I'm extra sorry for your date. The staff handled it professionally and very well despite this guy being a COMPLETE horrible pleb. Even though the customer service is often abysmal, we'll still continue to go there--- maybe we'll eventually figure out the secret codes to get the things we want. read more

There still are only a few plates here I enjoy which is kind of sad, and the belt is usually full, but we've found we just order a full salem roll to split right off the bat and we can grab a few plates after and be fine. I usually like to order the Shrimp Tempura but they fried the whole sushi in a maki roll rather than just rolling the fried shrimp tempura in a fresh maki roll. So, I didn't prefer their shrimp tempura. Their Spicy Tuna and Salmon were good and like how they offered extra spicy mayo with my order. But wish they had low sodium soy sauce available. read more

I came here a couple times when I got to go home for thanksgiving. The service has gone horribly downhill like other reviews state. We walked in and a young guy playing on his phone had to be yelled at to come seat us. If you want anything made special, you have to shoot off a flare gun to get anyone's attention. They also seemed pretty annoyed to make us certain dishes. Glad there is another sushi place in town now cause I don't see myself going here as often as I used to. Their Sushi is not cold it is warm and sits out for way past health safety standards do not go to this restaurant. Until I watched them take eaten wasabi from a customer, once they were done eating from it, then dumped what was left back into the bin they are serving the customers from. This is the only sushi place in McMinnville so you really don't have much of a choice unless you drive out of town. It was okay. Nothing compared to what I am use to. They have the rotation going which is fun and you can try different things but their selection is not that much, it is very repetitive. There are tons of deserts which was odd to me because I come to sushi for sushi not cheesecake. There prices are very reasonable but as we were eating we were watching the girls make sushi from rice in an igloo cooler and that was odd to me..clearly not fresh. It was made in advance and brought into the store. I think next time I am in the mood for sushi I will spend the extra time to drive out of town.
