This place is amazing. It's a go to spot for my boyfriend and I. I give it five stars even for ttes slight mishaps when I went there. One time the lamb chop was too salty aNd another time we accidentally got double charged. I can easily look past these two things because it's been an amazing experience all the other times... and I go there a lot. Like a lot a lot. Eat here. It's awesome. read more

I absolutely love the food here! Some of my favorites was the pacquiao roll and the surf and turf. Although times get busy, the servers were very attentive and kind. The atmosphere is nice and I love the Japanese private rooms!! read more

Short & sweet: Service: 4 for the busser, 2.5 for our main server Food: 3 Wait time: 5 (no wait, reservations accepted) Price: 3 Cleanliness of bathroom: 5 Dear Sushi Hai, If you had been my date for the evening, you would have been an OK date. You would have dressed quite well, but your sense of humor would have been a little off, our conversation a little strained, and the entire evening dotted with slight awkward moments. As in, you'd say something hoping to be impressive and I would have smiled slightly, adding a "..heh heh..." I'm grateful that your managers allowed me to use a coupon ($40 worth of food for $20) one day before the coupon was actually put into effect. The coupon was the reason why my girl friend and I put on some darling shoes, shaved (!!), and made ourselves up. So, Sushi Hai... Your ambiance - cool. A potentially ugly date would look just that much better from the shadows of the dim lighting. However, the ugly problem could have also been remedied by drinking the overpriced sake/ beer/ wine/ whatever (which I did not since my date was wonderful). Though you may seem small upon first glance, the size grew upon further experimentation. By which I mean, I walked more and all of your three levels. Your food - all right. I'm no sushi expert. I just like to eat it. A lot. (Like to eat it a lot and like to eat a lot of it.) But it wasn't deliciously delicious. It was ...good. We got two regular rolls: Philadelphia (cream cheese + smoked salmon + cucumber) and the Caterpillar (Eel and cucumber topped with avocado), and two special rolls: Firecraker (shrimp tempura, avocado, aioli - what is this, exactly?, & tempura crunchies topped with spicy tuna, green onion, spicy sauce, and eel sauce), Mile Hai (spicy salmon and cucumber topped with hamachi, avocado, green onion, sesame seeds, and a yuzu soy dressing). The Firecracker was good, but much more sweet than spicy. I did enjoy the Mile Hai - light and fresh. The other two are basics and were no different from ones I've had at other places. Though I must add: without the large discount, I would have probably been more upset at the specialty-rolls'-prices: quality-of-specialty-rolls ratio. In fact, without the discount, we would have probably eaten half the quantity of food we did consume. Your service - Not horrible. Not great. My server, a pretty girl with awesome eye makeup and stylishly coiffed hair, did her job but wasn't friendly. She had the demeanor that would have made me hesitant to ask her questions, if I wasn't the brave person I happen to be. A busser came and repeatedly filled our water cup (yay to you!) and another fella came to give us our sushi which means our server did... what..... exactly? Put in our orders? I've a little experience as a server at a sushi place: I bussed, took orders, served foods, refilled water cups.............man, this girl has it easy! Whoever you are, I liked your boots. I work downtown and honestly don't think of this spot for lunch unless my mom asks me. If you live in the Highlands area - it's convenient for sure! The past three times I have been here there has been a parking spot right in front (don't jinx me now)! The lunch menu is affordable. The sashimi is fresh and I like their appetizers a lot! Today I asked if they had charred shishito peppers and while no they didn't on the menu....wait for it..... Would we like that as they do have them in the kitchen. OMG. Oh happy day. Someone going above and beyond. Someone creating a stellar wow moment. For $4.95 we had a gorgeous display with garnish, lime and orchid. So lovely that we neglected to take a photo! The Sashimi Special is like $9.95 and comes with six pieces of sashimi and a real crab stuffed California Roll. Green tea and our Groupon deal and boom!! Lunch success for sure. Hmm went back to Sushi Hai this weekend and was not impressed. Our waitress was sort of standoffish and made me feel so awkward about only ordering a couple sushi rolls and one appetizer that I ordered a beer to ease the tension, my boyfriend did the same. Service was definitely prompt and they kept our water filled etc. I'm one of those people who always says "thank you" when someone fills my water and brings my food. The waitstaff/hostesses/food runners were not the type of people who say "you're welcome". We got the yellowtail scallion roll, the spicy tuna roll, veggie roll, and the Las Vegas roll. Let me tell you, the yellowtail roll was garbage. It was slightly warm which was off-putting since it's not a cooked roll... and it was mostly rice. It didn't taste like yellowtail or scallion... it tasted... smushy. The spicy tuna roll was pretty standard but again was slightly warm. The Las Vegas roll was no warmer than the others, but this IS a cooked roll. My favorite was the veggie roll... and you can deduce from the name... there was no fish in it. It was definitely the freshest tasting roll we had. I feel bad for making my boyfriend take me here since he's pretty new to sushi... I think this place scared him off of raw fish for another 6 months or so. read more

Don't go here for the sushi, go for the special private room off of the main dining room that has the sunken table and sliding doors. There is only one of these rooms, and somehow, on one magical day, I reserved a table for six and we landed on this gem. We all took off our shoes and sat at the low table to enjoy our festive meals. The sliding Japanese looking doors helped to block out a ton of the noise that echoes loudly through the restaurant most days of the week. This private room and special table might be only available for parties of six or above, but if you can, request it and you will know instantly as you enter the room, that you made the right choice. This table made my experience 88.7% better than normal. The bar downstairs is pretty popular and fun, but it wigs me out because it has no windows. The sushi is not that wonderful and the teriyaki chicken is horrible... And for some reason, I always forget that I dislike the teriyaki sauce and order it again... or maybe subconsciously I think it will be better tasting but it never is. Don't order it! This popular Highlands treat is a sure win with visitors and locals, just make sure you bring your mega phone and you patience... Food is okay & the service is horrible. We stopped by on a Friday and were immediately seated. To our surprise, the place wasn't packed & we thought we'd be in and out in time for a few drinks with friends...boy were we wrong. After getting seated, we browses the menu as we waited for the waiter to grab our drink orders. Needless to say, by the time he stopped by we had not only selected our meal but we're pretty set on grabbing the check too... This place is clearly understaffed on the wait side. Between the time it took for our meal order, to refills & our check....we had to have spent at least a combined 30 minutes without service. We got in at 7:00 and were out by 9:10....that says a lot. read more

I love this place. Located in the highlands right on the corner of lowell. Parking can be hard in the highlands especially with all of the street permits so keep this in mind. Sushi hai looks small when you first walk in but there is a also a downstairs area that is very large which I prefer. I was told they also do some comedy shows. For food, we started off with spicy garlic edamame which I am addicted to. Whatever they put on this is AMAZING. We also had an order of Gyoza which is a pork and veggie dumpling. I could probably eat a thousand of those. We ordered 5 rolls - Surf N Turf Roll (a favorite), firecracker roll, crunchy roll, salmon avocado, raging monkey and unsure of the other. They were all so good. Every time I come here, I am never disappointed. They also have great sake. Service is great, location is cool and atmosphere is good. In the passbook! read more

definitely upscale. i came here on my birthday with my best friend. some cranky old lady just insulted a waitress next to us. and then the cranky old woman proceeded to ask for a box it was clear to see the cranky bitch just couldn't afford the tip. the waitress and the cooking staff where excellent and very attentive. one of the managers even gave me a free shot of sake, since it was my birthday!! now that's good service! i will definitely come back. like i said this place is pretty upscale so it was more expensive than what i'm used to. but definitely worth it, best sushi i've ever had and an excellent wine selection, and the sake is soo smooth. i made sure to tip very well, especially because of that greedy old lady who couldn't afford to tip so. just a reminder to treat everyone with respect and kindness. especially your waiters. read more

Pretty average. My hubby and I had a $50 Living Social we used here last night. Even with the voucher, it still seemed expensive for the quality. Their menu has items labeled "Gluten Free" or "Cooked". We ordered several rolls that were marked with a GF. Later, we asked our server why the Philadelphia rolls were not gluten free. He said actually they were gluten free, but the menu is wrong. Huh? He said when they printed the menus, the formatting messed up so there are multiple items mislabeled. Not sure why they don't reprint them. The sushi rolls weren't bad, but they looked very similar to what you would purchase at a grocery store. Maybe the specialty rolls are better (none of those were gluten free). The Moonstone Sake flight was interesting; Coconut lemongrass is the best. It took about 45 minutes to get our sushi and 10 minutes to get our credit card back even though we were one of the last people in the restaurant. There are better sushi places in Denver strip malls like Land of Sushi and Namiko's. We won't be back here. read more

Seriously -Wow! Last night my hubs and I met my old friend and her husband for dinner at 7pm ...We were sat in the lower area ...Our waiter was very pleasant in the face of my picky friend ! lol He help us order and the choices were too good!! My husband and I had a great time !!! We were very satisfied and ate pretty much everything in front of us ...I've been to sushi hai a lot over the years and some of the others times were just so so (4 stars)...I guess they are really stepping up their game because everything was on point - Waiter even had a brave face on when we presented the dreaded groupon...lol So yes very good -very friendly - good vibes - lovely dinner ... This place is amazing! The food is stellar, menu is huge and everything was fantastic. I'm a vegetarian so it's always difficult to find great veggie options and Sushi Hais has the best! After a few drinks at happy hour, a group of us was craving sushi. Being the frugal girl that I am, I looked onto my deal sites and saw I had a $40 Living Social deal for Sushi Hai. Game on! We got there and I was't sure if it was really as small as it looked but turns out there is a whole other world downstairs, more intimate with booths and special rooms. We had six in our party and one of the rooms, the Bamboo room, didn't have a reservation so we got to sit in there. This room was excellent and I highly recommend it if you have a bigger party and want something different! There's a sunken in floor area where you sit and your legs hang while you sit on pillows and cushions. We got authentic and took off our shoes but if you have friends with funky feet this may not be the best course of action! Service was friendly and on point which was a surprise to me because that never seems to be the case at trendy places like Sushi Hai. We ordered appetizers and entrees and everything was staggered out nicely that we weren't receiving different dishes simultaneously. I recommend the short rib, it was absolutely heavenly! So tender, flavorful and garnished with onion rings, it's like child Tiffany and adult Tiffany coming together joining forcing in the form of an appetizer! We also ordered the calamari which was flavorful as well, it's a nicely sized portion in a sriracha-soy sauce concoction. We got two rolls-Chicksho Maki and #NINE (I heart anything with a hashtag) and both melted in my mouth and were different in their own right and tasty but #NINE won my heart thanks to it's kick from the jalapeno and cayenne. I was really surprised by this place and cant wait to come back here---this place is great for date night or for a night with friends--check it out! read more

This was our second visit for lunch using a $40 Living Social coupon. I had made a reservation using Open Table. The hostess seated us at a table. The server brought us hot rolled towels for our hands and a wine bottle of water. We ordered the Fried Calamari and the Tuna Poke Salad again since they were so good last time. The Tuna Poke Salad came out first. It had crisp half moon wonton chips. I would come here just for the Tuna Poke Salad. The Fried Calamari came out soon after the salad. I had asked for the ponzu sauce to be on the side. The calamari stayed crisp. The breading was a little bit more grainy today, but still good. Our sushi was ready to be served, but I had the server hold it at the counter so we could finish eating our appetizers. The Shrimp Tempura Roll and Spider Roll came out on the same plate. They looked very similar. Both had seaweed on the outside and the fried crustacean sticking out. These rolls were more than one bite, but they did not fall apart. They were both good, but I wouldn't order both of them at the same time since they are so similar. We will be back. read more

Date Night at the Sushi Hai - 5 stars! As a first timer to Sushi Hai and reading the just okay reviews, I HAVE to beg to differ. Not only was the service outstanding, the sushi rolls were delicious and were presented beautifully. Robin, our waitress, recommended a white wine and was there to refill our glasses each time. I didn't even touch the wine bottle. I liked that! We started off with edamame, which came immediately, and then checked off one of each: Dragon Roll, Spider Roll, Surf n' Turf and the special L.F.A roll. By far, our favorite were the Surf n' turf and the special L.F.A roll with crab, salmon, asparagus and a spicy sauce. The other two rolls were tasty but I will probably dream about the shrimp and filet mignon Surf n' Turf roll. After dinner we headed to Hai Bar downstairs and bellied up to the bar. The bartenders were nice and attentive and the crowd was having a great Saturday night. Two saki bombs and six drinks later, my bf and I were ready to move on. It was THE perfect start to what became a Highlands two person bar crawl. The place was pleasantly packed and not annoying at all. Yes, I do not eat sushi, but when you want to dine with friends sometimes you have to make sacrifices. I wasn't sure what to expect, but looked at their menu online and new there would be options for me to pick from. I was happy to see the non-sushi menu was larger than what's listed on their website. We started with the large edamame (plenty for 6) and a bottle of sake. Then when sushi showed up for everyone else, my perfectly cooked medium rare duck arrived. It came with a small salad (too much red onion) and awesome sweet potato fritters. I thought it was great and only $17. So, what I'm saying is I enjoyed a non-sushi meal at a sushi restaurant. read more

I hate to say it. I always want to like this place. But especially if I go downstairs the service is abysmal. I really do not understand. But in general they are garbage at service. Apparently they don't like people at the bar. Even when I made a comment about mediocre service they brushed it off and said "I am sorry--what do you want again" and then they disappeared in a fractional second. We decided To stop in here for restaurant week and it was overall a pleasant experience. My boyfriend did the restaurant week thing and I got some nigiri and another roll and it was a TON of food! Firstly our waiter was very nice and attentive. He had a jolly personality. They only had 4 beers on tap but 3 of them were from the Pacific Northwest, so being from Oregon I loved that! That part of the highlands is a lot like Northwest Portland! I decided to go cocktail since I had already tried all those beers and got the gin cucumber cocktail which was very delicious and somewhat strong, and I loved it!! All of the rolls were good, we had one that was very spicy! I think it had spicy tuna, sriracha, and jalapeños...if you are into spice like we are, I would definitely recommend this roll. I have to say every time I go to sushi I always want to get the rolls because they seem like the most fun but we always get the nigiri and I am always reminded that they usually end up being my favorites. The yellowtail belly nigiri was hands down the best thing I had. I regret not ordering a boat of like 20 of those!!! (They have certain platters you can order that come out on a boat!) ugh it was so good, I can't wait to come back and have more! And the icing on the cake, or should I say fruit compote on the tempura fried green tea ice cream was these few bites of heaven to finish it all off! Every time that i've come here, the service has always been pretty good. The sushi is mediocre and a bit pricey. I usually only come here if a friend wants to hang out (since they also have a bar/lounge and open late night) or a groupon/living social deal. I've had their spider roll and it was not good at all. Their batter taste not fresh and just had a weird taste, it wasn't even crunchy...it tasted soggy like it wasn't fresh. Not a place i'd go to if i was craviing sushi. The sushi here wouldn't satisfy my taste. All their other rolls are okay. If i were to dine here again, there unagi roll, surf and turf, and las vegas rolls were best here. I haven't had other items (entrees) so my reviews is only about their sushi/sashimi. I've also had the seafood dynamite. It's not the best but i've had worst. So it's okay, again mediocre. The place would be better if their sushi/sashimi was better than mediocre. It not only have a bar/ lounge, they have djs on weekends and seems to be a nice hang out spot, their are also private sit down dining (just like japanese style) which seems to be cool i'd haven't tried it myself. Parking is a bit of a pain though. They're street parking and there are other lounge/restuarants in the area so it tend to get full and sometimes hard to find a parking. They have valet also but that also gets full sometimes. read more

I should have trusted my gut knowing all the deals and Groupons Sushi Hai was doing that it was going to be a mediocre place. I'll keep it simple. If you're looking for over price sushi with meh quality this is your place. Service isn't bad but i should've thought twice knowing on a Saturday evening it was empty AF. Someone in our group got the ramen - dafaq is this ramen they make? Is the bowl huge? Yes but the noodles were mushy and everything was an okay flavor. Sushi wasn't bad but it's your typical Japanese American sushi rolls which I felt were again ... just okay not like i would be craving it! Given it's location and being in Highland Square - for the love of god up your quality of food. The neighborhood deserves a sushi restaurants that's delicious. read more

Came here on a Paint Nite! The bar (?) underground is pretty cool. We ordered miso soup and 2 rolls. The firecracker roll and the #9 are good. Is it out of this world? No. Did it hit the spot? Yes. I usually like nigiri or sashimi because the sweet sauces on rolls overpower the genuine and tender taste of the sashimi. As far as rolls go, it thankfully wasn't so sweet that I felt like I was eating dessert. We did order dessert, however, and it was a mistake. We ordered strawberry and green tea mochi ice cream. The green tea was OLD. REALLY OLD. The mochi layer was hard and brittle. YUCK! The strawberry mochi tasted fine. Nothing special. You can pick these up at the supermarket nowadays. There really no excuse for a restaurant serving SUPER OLD AND DRY AND BRITTLE DISGUSTING MOCHI ice cream. I would leave 2 stars but we really had fun at Paint Nite. Service was good. read more

The build your own tuna temaki hand rolls can easily be shared and the tuna is so fresh and well seasoned. The szechuan dumplings are delicious, as is the curry onigiri and the bao bun. The Dan Dan noodle, kimchi Carbonara, and their tonkotsu ramen are also amazing, and, with the exception of the tonkotsu ramen, can easily be shared. I would highly recommend other seasonal dishes as well, such as the coconut swordfish or chicken katsu parm. However, one of my absolute favorite dish here is the ochazuke. It's basically grilled fish over rice in a warm green tea dashi. It's so comforting, especially on a cold night, and a dish that I return to time and time again.
