I personally opted for the $69 option whereas my dinner partner went for the $100 one. The servers were super attentive, friendly, and efficient - making sure our waters were always topped up, asking if the food was good, and cleaning up the area around us. It was a bit annoying when they would constantly come up to us asking if we wanted to pay for more add-on pieces; I think we had to decline 5 or 6 times, which is way too many. The fish was fresh and tasty though I feel like there was too much wasabi in each bite and the rice was a bit too minimal. I think this place is worth a try, though I think I've had better omakase in NYC.

Food, service And ambiance is great here!!!! Will definitely be returning and to both locations. It is still BYOB

WOW! I had an amazing time here. This was my most memorable/top restaurant during my NYC trip from the Bay Area! Originally, we were going to get the $69 omakase but ended up with the $100 omakase. There were a few tables and a row of bar seating. Great service and the staff (both server and chefs) was super friendly. Great quality for every piece and amazing price. I would come back for sure!! 2 Appetizers + 15 pieces + 1 Handroll - everything from this course was incredibly fresh and exquisite. To highlight a few - the toro melted in my mouth, uni was creamy, wagyu was charred to perfection, truffle went well with tuna, and salmon with a fascinating sauce on top. Server also offered us sake to drink with the chefs!

My friend, her mom, sister and I decided to walk into Sushi by M for an impromptu dinner and wow, it was such a fantastic experience! I always love a place where we could keep ordering more as we wanted, almost a la carte, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable night. The service was friendly and attentive, and we really enjoyed trying both the hot and cold sake options, which paired perfectly with each course. My top three pieces were the toro with caviar--rich and indulgent, the chu-toro with that perfect buttery texture, and the lightly seared hamachi, which was tender with a hint of smokiness. This spot is a must for any sushi lover and I think their menu changes, and they're known for their omakase, so I'd like to return.

Truly incredible Omakase experience! Came here by myself on a week night with a reservation and was seated by my hostess. She asked if there were any allergies and once I informed her- she informed the chef responsible for my meal and he made a note of it and verbally confirmed it with me too! I have never had such caring staff that took allergies as seriously as them! I noticed how warming and friendly every staff member was to every customer of the night and even the chefs interacted with all their customers. Perusing through the menu- I opted for their smaller omakase experience at $69 that included 12 pieces of quality fish. I'm no expert in the name of the fish- but every single piece was uniquely different and delicious! Smooth, buttery and fresh quality fishes. My favorite of the night was the Wagyu with uni piece- creamy uni and the buttery fatty Wagyu was so rich and overwhelmingly amazing! My hostess found out I was celebrating my birthday and she gifted me a glass of sake and also informed my chef! He then prepared another small dish and the whole restaurant dimmed the lights and sang the birthday song to me! I was taken aback and felt so much warmth from everyone including the other customers wishing me birthday wishes. Truly incredible experience and would definitely come back again! If I could give this place more stars, I would!

I finally got around to trying omakase in nyc! Took a lil bit to get settled in a new city but I'm so glad this was first here. I'm a huge fan of omakase and I'm pleasantly surprised by how much cheaper it is here than in CA (which averages $200 for not that many pieces). They took such good care of me here! Thank you to all the waitresses who made sure I was having a good time. I wanted to treat myself to my recent accomplishments in life so I went on my own. I know dining alone can be intimidating for some people but you will definitely not feel alone here! I highly recommend getting the $100 set. It's really filling and the fancier nigiri options are so worth it.

This was my first omakase experience and it was a treat for my group of 4! We made a reservation for the countertop and we're really happy we did. Our chef was attentive, funny, engaging, and overall made the experience 5 stars. We opted for the 12 piece course and a bottle of sake and it was the perfect amount. The fish was fresh and I especially liked items that were torched, it gave a smoky profile to the delicate fish. The chef observed the way we picked up the pieces and positioned it precisely to everyone's preferred direction. He also listened and saw we were big lovers of brain numbing wasabi and added on more as well as provided us with a side of wasabi to use, the attention to detail! It was also cool to see that reason behind the M, there specialty pieces that were named after McDonald items! While there, we saw single diners, friends, couples; it was a casual but classy spot. Definitely would recommend for a night out!

Love love love this place! Best value omakase. Pros: - top notch service. We had great talks with the chefs. They're very nice people. - great service! Offered us free sake and even asked us if we want a second round. Very surprised. - great value! $69 for 12 pieces sushi + 1 hand roll. Hand down for this price and what I got. - better than average omakase food taste. I love the prawn, scallop, wagyu beef, fat tuna. And given the price, I think it's 200% worth the price. Cons: - space is small. They have other branches too. I'll definitely check out all of them!!

The establishment's interior is quite cozy seating roughy about 12 people I'd say give or take. The service was by far quite good . The host explained what each and every piece was and he was also quite generous with offering me shots ( given it was my birthday) For the omakase itself, each and every piece of nigiri was on point. I did have some personal favorites , mine being the the shrimp , the uni and the final piece which was served on a spoon. If you're looking for an omakase that doesn't break the bank , is fun , casual setting , and very fun , friendly and interactive definitely check out sushi by M

Popped in for a quick meal and then asked for it to be SUPER quick when we realized we had a comedy show a few blocks away in half an hour. Chef Mike was up for the challenge! We had a full omikase with some planned substitutions in record time and it was amazing! Each dish better than the next. Considering how affordable this meal was ($69 per omakase) and the quality of the fish, I will definitely be back for a longer meal. Thank you to the chef and all the staff for getting us in and out in record time with zero skimping on quality!

TLDR: The newer, larger Sushi by M. Lots of table seating and the counter can probably fit about 18 people. For the $100 or less and one-hour omakase options, it's decent. There's a good amount of pieces for the money but nothing particularly stood out to me. Maybe an off night but for this tier of sushi - feels like there are many options out there. If you do go, the $100 menu is definitely more worth it. Good for someone seeing if they're into the omakase concept without blowing crazy money. Sushi by M has quite a following and we figured we should try their newer location. While it is much larger, they are definitely maximizing on the space here. Comfort-wise, it felt very tight IMO. We opted for the $100 17-piece menu, for the extra $31 you're getting 5 more pieces and much more premium ingredients. Our chef was polite but not particularly interactive. If you're looking for an intimate sushi dinner, this is not the place. It's loud, the lights dim every time it's someone's birthday. I get it though - they're trying to have the party vibe and that's fine. Most pieces had toppings, sauces, etc. The fattier pieces were probably the best but those ingredients do a lot of the heavy-lifting for you. It wasn't bad but just nothing stood out to me. Even the add-on we got of the Big Mac fell short. I've had this piece at the original location and it's hard to think this wouldn't be good. For $25, a dollop of rice is topped with seared wagyu, fatty tuna, sea urchin and all sandwiched between nori. By the time I got it, the rendered fat mushed the seaweed. There was too much sinew in the tuna. So what should have been a tasty super-stack just tasted kind of too greasy and chewy. I think this in combination with the overall vibe is why I felt it was just OK. Maybe if we dropped in and sat with a more engaging chef or Tim, our experience would have been different. However, I also understand that these guys are serving 4 to 6 people at once and the seating is limited to an hour. Again, part of the reason why I don't hate it or love it.

Lindsay S.

I went here for my birthday and it was the BEST time. My bf and I got the more expensive set since it was my birthday and let me tell you it was worth it - that Hokkaido uni was so good! We also both got a Big Mac since that is their specialty. It is really good but honestly you would be fine without it. I would only get it on special occasions bc it's expensive $25 for one piece of sushi! Highlight was when they turned off the lights played birthday song and gave me a delicious piece with a candle! Also chef M is so fun! He gave us a ton of sake as our table seating was one of the last of the night. Def will be back!

- new old (OG) location is back and better than ever - 15 pieces for $90 - I prefer this location because it's more intimate than the one on 5th st - seats around 10-12 people, counter service only - $20 corkage fee if you byob - each piece was well balanced and melt in your mouth indulgent like we've come to expect from chef Ms restaurants - every piece was super fresh - one day I'm going to opt out of omakase and order one of each of the specials and appetizers and call it a day

The atmosphere here was a bit more lively and crowded compared to the more relaxed vibe of the UWS spot. I enjoyed my meal even more this time around. I started with the beet salad, which was delicious and offered great value given the generous portion size. it featured sliced beets, arugula, goat cheese, and walnuts. I also had my eye on the hijiki soybean salad--which is a bit smaller and reportedly homemade--so I may try that next time, along with the warm mushroom salad which looked very tasty. The edamame was standard but served as a nice starter. For my main rolls, I chose the salmon avocado and the yellowtail scallion. Both were very fresh and definitely worth ordering again. The salmon avocado roll had a nice touch of sesame seeds on the rice, while the yellowtail scallion was prepared with the seaweed on the outside. My boyfriend's sushi entree looked excellent, so I am considering that or the sushi-sashimi combo for my next visit. The entrees provide a substantial amount of food, and I especially appreciate that they allow you to choose which roll comes with your meal.

They share a takeout menu and it's super easy to order--text what you want to the phone number on the website and pickup in ~20 minutes :). You pay on a handheld and they don't ask for tip for takeout. I love this process and truly wish more sushi restaurants in LA adopt the takeout box. The only one I know of is hefty but also $200 each lol, making Sanyuu's $69 omakase and $78 Everything don, not to mention the $30 giant salmon nigiri set, A STEAL! I enjoyed most of the pieces but I will say I don't like their amaebi or uni at all. I'm not sure what kind of uni is used here but it's the type with a very strong mineral flavor & aftertaste that I don't find enjoyable. We're spoiled by easy access to live spot prawns everywhere and fresh SB uni. Despite this, I wouldn't hesitate to come back if I lived in the city.

To be honest, I was getting a little nauseated after 5 pieces, haha~ They were definitely delicious but I'd probably just eat 3 or 4 pieces and share with a friend! It was easy to text the number on the website and coordinate a pickup time, and the staff was friendly when I arrived. The restaurant is a little hard to find as the windows are blinded and the sign is a piece of paper on the door.
