I really held off on doing a review because we wanted to keep this our little secret. We have been a couple times now and each time was phenomenal. The service is high quality, the sushi is incredible, and the menu is frequently updated with new recipes. It is a very chill and upscale vibe; perfect for date night. This will forever be a local fave of ours and when we get another kid free night, we will be back!

Excellent date night experience! Food was amazing!! Best sushi in Suffolk! Dessert was the best part!!

I can't say enough good things about this place. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a very small restaurant with a calm atmosphere; perfect for date night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food was so delicious that I can't stop thinking about it

The most authentic sushi and sashimi place I ever tasted here in Virginia! We were station in Japan for 3 years and I fall in love with their culture, place and food. We've been here 5 years now, so far this is the best place I found. This place is so amazing and so authentic sushi, specially the sashimi! AKA is local and own by the chief that work closely with the famous Japanese sushi chef from NYC! I don't know if you're that craze with sushi and sashimi to drive an hour away but it's all worth it! It's the closest one from authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi! From their salad, appetizer, main course, up to dessert (red bean cream brûlée) ! Even their alcohol is really good as well as the service! Highly recommended!

My husband and I recently celebrated our 2nd Wedding Anniversary at Sushi Aka. The service was excellent, food was fresh and delicious and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the ambiance was exactly what we were hoping for![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We started with edemame and gyoza as appetizers (we were practically fighting over ever bite of the cabbage salad that came with the gyoza ) as entrees we each got 2 rolls and every bite was fresh and delicious! Since it was our anniversary we decided to get dessert and so glad we did...we probably would have licked the plate if we weren't out in public! We will definitely be back!

Did you ever live in or visit Japan? Do you like Sushi? Well come on down to Sushi Aka's they'll get ya right. They have "American" style and can go traditional depending on what you order. We had multiple delectables, including some delicious wagyu that was on special. Great for a date night, business meet-up, or for just a splurge. Arigato Gozaimasu!

Ate here tonight and was very pleased! The food was excellent, service very good, and the restaurant very nice! My wife had the Caribbean roll (daily special) and I tried the salmon with risotto and asparagus. Both were very good. Give it a try if in the area!

Hands down the BEST sushi restaurant if not all of Hampton Roads but all of VA! We've dined all over the world, and we throughly enjoy the quality of ingredients, fish, and service. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a small intimate restaurant run by a small staff, which are like family.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The owner is the sushi chef, which to me is a good sign because you know his attention to detail with quality ingredients is going to be top notch. They make all their dishes in house including some amazing desserts. If sushi/sashimi aren't your preference, they have great beef, pork and chicken options too. Their pork belly ramen special is so good my daughter craves it. Most of the time when we dine in or order takeout we give them a budget for a sushi/sashimi platter with our likes and dislikes and they come up with an outstanding presentation. A home run every time! Support local small businesses, especially this one, it's a gem in downtown Suffolk and Hampton Roads area!

The restaurant was fairly empty, with only three other tables occupied, so we were surprised by the length of the wait. Our two canned Sapporos didn't arrive until about 30 minutes after ordering. The shrimp sandwich took approximately 45 minutes, and the Vang rolls arrived after about an hour. After waiting an hour, we were informed that the garlic shrimp for our garlic noodles was unavailable, despite it being part of our original order. Unfortunately, the Vang rolls were so salty that we couldn't finish them. Throughout the meal, our water glasses were never refilled, and there was little communication about the delays or unavailable menu items. After roughly 90 minutes of waiting, multiple delays, and learning that several items were unavailable, we decided to pay for what we had received the two Sapporos, the shrimp sandwich, and the Vang rolls, which came to about $70. Perhaps we visited on an off night, but the combination of the slow service, poor communication, unavailable menu items, and disappointing food quality made for a frustrating experience. Based on this visit, I don't see myself returning. +1 Vibe +0 Taste +0 Presentation +0 Service +0 Value

I was so pleasantly surprised when she brought me the sushi that I have been craving for so long they were 18 pieces/3 rolls. I normally only eat two rolls. Everything was delicious. I only wished I knew they served alcohol. I would've had a beer with my lunch because I love beer with sushi. That was my fault, though the menu was right there on the table. I just didn't think they served alcohol. The place has a nice open dining room with beautiful decorations. The bathroom was clean. The service was wonderful and pleasant. While the exterior of the establishment appears quite understated and traditional, the interior is an absolute masterpiece utterly breathtaking from the moment you cross the threshold. My friend had very wisely arranged a reservation for me in advance. As I was dining solo tonight, I chose a beautifully convenient, intimate table that allowed me to fully take in the surroundings. The attention to detail here is extraordinary; the serene atmosphere, the curated decor, and even the traditional Chinese attire worn by the staff create a thoroughly immersive and sophisticated experience. I found it deeply admirable. The hospitality was nothing short of impeccable. A wonderfully gracious waiter welcomed me with immense warmth and escorted me to my seat, demonstrating a top-tier standard of service throughout the evening. To begin, I treated myself to a Lychee Cocktail my absolute favorite and it was mixed to perfection. Following a most pleasant conversation with my waiter, I decided on the Soup Dumplings for my main course. They were a absolute revelation extraordinarily fresh, delicate, and bursting with rich, complex flavors. It is no exaggeration to say that this establishment feels like a hidden paradise rediscovered. You can dine in or do takeout. The restaurant has a laid back vibe, and pretty decor. The hanging light fixture is super cute!! The staff is friendly, and we were greeted promptly!! We ordered a garlic butter corndog, a regular corndog, fries, a cookie butter shake, a chicken sandwich, and a mango lemonade... The owner is super sweet, she brought out new items for us to try that she'll be adding to the menu soon. The crab rangoon fries and crab rangoon wonton nachos.. We didn't have to wait long for our food. I was satisfied with that. Korean corn dogs: the garlic butter was tasty on the corn dog, and the regular one was good also with both sauces. You can choose cheese, hotdog, or half and half!! I always enjoy them!! Fries: they were crispy and tasted fresh! The crab rangoon fries were good also. They had scallions, crab, and rangoon cream cheese sauce. The rangoon cream cheese sauce is delicious. We also added a little siracha sauce, which was just enough spice to make it pop. The wonton nachos had the same toppings as the fries. I really enjoyed the wonton chips!! I'd definitely get them again. I had leftovers and the wonton chips were still crispy. Chicken sandwich: it had kimchi cucumbers and honey siracha sauce. It was good and also on the $5 deals menu. Good deal! Cookie butter milkshake: we both liked the drink. The cookie butter taste came through good. My daughter was a little confused because it didn't have ice cream like a milkshake would. So it's more of a thick milk based kind of drink. But I did enjoy it. Mango lemonade: this drink was refreshing. It had just enough sweetness. It comes in a pint sized container. There's mango, watermelon, and strawberry. You can also add boba for an upcharge. Very tasty!! Cookie butter croffle: Mmmm! My daughter loved it, she left me one bite. Lol. This is one of my top flavors!! Honestly all the croffle flavors are good!! All I all, the food was good and customer service was also! There's always something new to be on the lookout for, so check them and their menu out! Thai Tara had been our favorite place to dine in Williamsburg... ...until last night. There is one simple reason that it has fallen off our list: Outrageous prices that are constantly rising. We have visited this restaurant biweekly for the past year since we moved here and at least twice on every visit to Williamsburg since the restaurant opened. What we have noticed is that the prices are going up at a far higher rate than general inflation. We started to dine at Thai Tara when it first opened a few years ago when it cost us $40-50 per person. Slowly at first, it became an expensive treat. But last night we were handed a bill for $70 per person; for 3 of us, the bill came to was $215. Nothing extravagant. Three $6 beers, three appetizers and a few pieces of Sushi and Sashimi. And for the first time in memory, the sushi rice was not properly seasoned and sticky, which makes for a poorly prepared product. But this review is not about a single disappointing food experience which is certainly the exception. This is about the outrageous prices. It is our opinion that pure greed is on display here. They fill the restaurant several times over almost every evening. They won a Best Restaurant honor recently. So our guess is that the owners have figured that they can grab for more profit and if they lose a few patrons, no big deal. They just need to keep in mind that many of their close-by loyal neighbors who are on a retirement budget and frequented this establishment, and are coming to the same conclusion. Thai Tara is overtly overpriced. So sad to say "so long ", Thai Tara. You have priced yourselves out of our budget.
