I think Koshi has the best QUALITY fish out of all the sushi restaurants I've been to in the Norfolk area. Although it is on the pricier side, I recommend coming here if you want a sushi date night out. All the sushi rolls are incredibly good and the chirashi bowl was very well seasoned with sushi vinegar and the fish was incredibly fresh. You have to park on the street, but usually there's always street parking available. If not, you can park across the street at the little strip parking lot. I finally got to try this restaurant! Lol I pass it everytime, but forget they are only opened in the evenings. Let's just say everything was excellent! The decore was nice modern feel, and service was perfect! The presentation of each dish was pretty, plus it all tasted so good. And dish can make to order. I found this restaurant since my first option for dinner fell through. I just parked and walked until I found someplace promising. This was where I landed! This sushi spot seemed very upscale. The decorations were really well done and the sushi chefs were busy making orders. I sat in front of the sushi chefs and initially it was awkward for me. It was just me alone and no one greeted me. After awhile I went to use the bathroom and debate on whether I should stay. (The toilet was pretty awesome by the way, with a bidet feature I didn't use and a warm seat that took me by surprise!) I decided to stay and sat at the bar instead. There, I received service. I ended up ordering the soju mule, tuna carpaccio, and the salmon skin roll. The mule was very yummy! It was a perfect start to my dinner. Next, the carpaccio. The tuna was so fresh and I loved the flavors together. I was not sure if I should try it but it turned out super yummy. Finally, the star of the show. OH MAN. The salmon skin roll. What a choice! It was divine. The skin was so crunchy and the flavors just went so well together. I keep thinking about that roll! Fine, I guess. Not what it used to be. Compares kind of unfavorably to the all-you-can-eat place the next block over. Sunday night on a three day weekend, the server wouldn't give us a table since we didn't have a reservation. The other server was seating walk ins without question. We finagled a table; the entire place stayed pretty empty. Sushi was fine. Not great, certainly not worth twice as much as the aforementioned AYCE place. Sushi took 40 minutes on a slow night. We ordered two appetizers, some fried squid and some rockfish. The calamari took ~20 minutes, while the rockfish (raw) took 30; ten minutes later came the sushi. My favorite sushi restaurant in the area! I used to come to Koshi all the time pre Covid for Lunch when I lived closer. They had the best sushi and sashimi lunch specials for the price/quality. Unfortunately, Koshi has changed their hours for dinner only post Covid. The staff is always friendly and formal. They all wear traditional Japanese kimono tops and attentive in my experience. Sushi Chefs are also welcoming and always greet me when I come in! Keep in mind that Koshi is closed on Mondays. Parking is limited to street parking and there is a parking garage under the Twenty One Apartments for guests on the first floor. The restaurant is clean and has sleek lighting along the sides of the walls by the booths and for there fish tanks. It has an intimate setting, which is nice for a date night or with friends. I also like how they have a bar area on the right side with high tops, and then another bar area in front of the sushi chefs. My boyfriend and I love to eat and ordered quite a bit of food. Everything we ordered was delicious! Dinner for Two: this option is on the last page of the menu. It comes with miso soup and a house salad. You get to choose 2 items from a list of menu items for each course (appetizers, simple sushi rolls, special sushi rolls, and a dessert). -Appetizers: -Gyoza was delicious and came in a set of 5. This did not taste like the frozen ones and the kitchen took the time to pan fry and steam the gyoza. Came with a side of gyoza dipping sauce that complimented this dish. - Sushi Appetizer was in the form of nigri, which has a scoop of rice under each piece of sashimi. This had a variety of a few different fishes including Ahi Tuna, Salmon, Tilapia, and Shrimp. This tasted fresh and the quality was 10/10! -Simple Sushi Rolls: You can choose from a few different rolls and we chose the 2 below. -Spicy Tuna Roll: the spicy tuna was flavorful and had the perfect balance of spice. Came in a order of 6 pieces and included avocado in the roll. - Spicy Salmon Roll: the spicy salmon was not as spicy or flavorful compared to the spicy tuna. This is a panko battered chicken deep fried and stir fried cabbage over bed of rice. Traditionally it's made with pork and I was surprised chicken was the only option in the menu. The chicken was moist and had a crispy exterior coating. I love cabbage and wanted more of this while eating the chicken Katsu. It's a nice pairing with the fried chicken and rice. Maki Dinner: we had too many soups because this dish also had a miso soup and house salad. Yes we ate all 3 soups and salads lol. This dish came with a California roll, spicy tuna roll and one special roll. We chose the Double Spicy Salmon Roll again, because my boyfriend loves Salmon. All three rolls were great and I like that the Sushi Chefs put the right amount of rice and filling ratio for each roll. We definitely cannot visit Koshi as often as we would like, due to living further away. But when we do, we make it worth it! With respect to Japan, You can taste the difference in freshness, while American sushi prefers extra fillers. Real quality japanese restaurants have O'toro, and chutoro and uni. I fell in love after finding out they have O toro (fatty tuna) that melts in your mouth, good! It's the most sought out cut of fish and chu toro (tuna belly) which is hard to come by. We ordered also the dragon roll and salmon belly sashimi. My friend got the chicken teriyaki and he killed it, along with his miso soup and salad. Since they used to live in Japan.. they gave me their opinion stating they loved it and that they seem to add more flavor to their food. Keeping in mind the chef had to add his Korean magic to the food. I will be returning as soon as I can. I was just sad that they were so busy that our sushi took some time, as we waited a good 30-40 min for our order to come out.. but for a Saturday night I understand they were busy. Koshi opened almost four years ago, taking over the space previously occupied by the Soya Sushi Bar & Bistro in Ghent. In addition to also being a sushi bar, a number of hot and cold Japanese appetizers, sashimi, and a few Korean dishes are offered as well. It was taken over by Chef Phillip Lee in October of 2017 and opened during the following month in November. Chef Lee had previous stints at Kanpai Sushi and Nara Sushi in Virginia Beach. In addition to buying fresh fish from local markets, Chef Lee also prides himself on his artistic and creative menu selections and special additions. I had planned to write a review over a year ago after a couple of visits before the pandemic, but I became sidetracked with other reviews. I had not yet tried any of their actual sushi dishes during those visits and finally did so this year. Located directly across from the 21st Street Pavilion, Koshi is part of the 201 West 21st Street building, which also includes an apartment complex. Parking is available in an indoor parking garage for its apartment complex and a few on-street spaces in front. Parking in the 21st Street Pavilion is not advised, as there is usually a security guard outside who keeps an eagle eye on people who try to use their lot to patronize businesses across the street. During one of my visits from over a year ago, before the pandemic, I tried the following: CRUDO SPECIAL: Rockfish with Pomegranate Puree, Grape, and Kumquat. This was one of the most awesome and artfully prepared sashimi dishes I have ever had the pleasure to to enjoy. Incredibly delicious, it was a feast for both my eyes and my palate. My Rating: 5-Plus Stars. NOTE: I have not seen any additional crudo specials offered during any of my visits this year. I am guessing that this may be due to cutbacks caused by the pandemic. I showed my good server a photo of this one and expressed a vote to bring it back. I have sampled the following dishes this year: OFF MENU ADDITION: Fire Salmon Belly Nigiri. This one consisted of two pieces of flame torched salmon belly nigiri, topped with jalapeno and avocado, atop a slice of lemon in a layer of vodka sauce. The flavors of the salmon belly and other ingredients came through exquisitely, and the flame torched warmth was a welcome touch. My Rating: 5 Stars. SPICY PORKGOGI BIBIM BOWL: Assorted Vegetables and Marinated Pork over a Bed of Rice topped with a Sunny Side-Up Egg. This was one of their Korean menu items and was preceded by a bowl of their Miso Soup and their House Salad. I found the miso soup to be overly bland, and the sauce that came with their salad didn't quite agree with me. As for the Bibim Bowl itself, the flavors the veggies and spicy marinated pork hit all the right notes with enough spice to make my hot tooth happy. My Overall Rating: 4 Stars. TUNA TATAKI: Seasoned and Marinated Tuna in Ponzu Sauce with Truffle Oil. Ordered from the Cold Appetizers section of their menu, the tuna imparted a fresh and pleasant taste and texture. Yet, it didn't quite reach the heights of the Tuna Tataki I featured in my last review. My Rating: 4 Stars. POKE BOWL: This was a create-your-own Poke Bowl consisting of Sushi Rice for my base, a mix of Tuna, Octopus, and Salmon for my proteins, and Cucumber, Ginger, Masago, Scallion, and Seaweed Salad for my toppings, topped with their Korean Chili Sauce. This one missed the mark for me. The sushi rice was overly cold for my tastes, and the seaweed salad appeared to be absent. The flavors of of the ingredients didn't really come through for me. Maybe I ordered the wrong combination of ingredients. My Rating: 2 Stars. BLUEFIN TUNA NIGIRI: I ordered two pieces, and they both melted in my mouth with a oneness of flavor and texture. I think I am finally getting the hang of eating Nigiri. The trick is to eat an entire piece in one bite in order to experience their balance of flavor. My Rating: 5 Stars. FUTOMAKI ROLL: Egg Cake, Crab Stick, and Masago. This is a traditional Japanese style roll with the seaweed on the outside, which is my preference. It was attractively presented, and the flavors came through nicely. The sushi rice was just a bit too much on the cool side for my tastes. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. SPICY TUNA AVOCADO ROLL: The Spicy Tuna Roll has become my favorite non-traditional Japanese roll, one that is believed to have been invented in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles during the 1980s. It was served Uramaki style with the rice on the outside and the seaweed on the inside. I liked the zig-zag presentation of the sushi roll pieces on my plate, and their flavors came through nicely. As always, I would have preferred for the seaweed to be on the outside instead of the inside. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. The service I have received here has been excellent. However, for $12-17 rolls I expect them to be a bit larger, more full of ingredients and for the rice to stick together better. The house sauce (eel sauce) wasn't impressive. I did enjoy the Korean Chili Sauce on the BTS. It adds just a bit of heat and tastes like an Asian twist on buffalo sauce! The lime garlic edamame was fun because we've never seen that anywhere else! It adds a little bite to it, but we both agreed we prefer just garlic or salted edamame. We did enjoy the rolls, but we'll keep searching for a go-to sushi place. read more

So recently they increased their prices (totally get it). We would always get the maki dinner for $18.99 which was phenomenal however now the price has gone up to $25.99. An additional change to the maki it seems the portion sizes are smaller. Last week we ordered 6 different rolls and they were just.....eh. We usually spend over $100 on sushi especially if the sushi is worth it and their rolls tasted underwhelming. Their specialty rolls lack diversity in flavor.
