I finally got to try this restaurant! Lol I pass it everytime, but forget they are only opened in the evenings. Let's just say everything was excellent! The decore was nice modern feel, and service was perfect! The presentation of each dish was pretty, plus it all tasted so good. And dish can make to order. For example I ordered the tuna tartar, but I asked for them to make a salmon version. So cool! Also ordered gyoza dumplings, seaweed salad, sunomono and couple of our favorite sushi rolls., I am excited to come again and try other wonderful dishes!

This spot is a must-visit for fresh sushi and attentive service. The restaurant is very well decorated with tables and booths to choose from. I enjoyed the sashimi dinner which came with soup and salad. It is a bit pricey compared to other spots but the quality of the food and service is well worth it. I am looking forward to my next visit.

Consistently Great Experience at Koshi! My husband and I often come to Koshi for our date nights, and it's become one of our favorite spots. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming, which makes it perfect for a relaxing evening out. We usually start with the garlic lime and kanisu--both are fresh and full of flavor. The sashimi deluxe is our go-to for the main course, and we like to pair it with cold sake. There's a great variety of sake here, and we enjoy trying something new each time. Service is usually attentive and friendly, even when they're busy. During peak dinner hours, the food can take a little longer to come out, but it's clear that everything is made fresh to order, which we appreciate. If you're into quality sushi and a calm, inviting setting, Koshi is definitely worth checking out.

Koshi is hands-down my go-to spot! The vibe is always warm and inviting, and the service never disappoints. Whether it's a chill night or the place is packed, everything runs smoothly and the staff stays super attentive. Shout-out to Maki, one of the sweetest and most attentive waitresses around--she always makes us feel welcome and taken care of. Her friendly energy adds so much to the experience! I've tried almost everything on the menu, but the sashimi dinner is my absolute favorite--the fish is always fresh and high quality. Their cocktail menu is also a highlight--tons of variety and fun new drinks to try every time. Every visit is consistently great. If you're into fresh food, good vibes, and awesome service, Koshi is 100% worth checking out!

I think Koshi has the best QUALITY fish out of all the sushi restaurants I've been to in the Norfolk area. Although it is on the pricier side, I recommend coming here if you want a sushi date night out. All the sushi rolls are incredibly good and the chirashi bowl was very well seasoned with sushi vinegar and the fish was incredibly fresh. You have to park on the street, but usually there's always street parking available. If not, you can park across the street at the little strip parking lot. The waiter was also very sweet and made sure everything we needed was tended to.

I found this restaurant since my first option for dinner fell through. I just parked and walked until I found someplace promising. This was where I landed! This sushi spot seemed very upscale. The decorations were really well done and the sushi chefs were busy making orders. I sat in front of the sushi chefs and initially it was awkward for me. It was just me alone and no one greeted me. After awhile I went to use the bathroom and debate on whether I should stay. (The toilet was pretty awesome by the way, with a bidet feature I didn't use and a warm seat that took me by surprise!) I decided to stay and sat at the bar instead. There, I received service. I ended up ordering the soju mule, tuna carpaccio, and the salmon skin roll. The mule was very yummy! It was a perfect start to my dinner. Next, the carpaccio. The tuna was so fresh and I loved the flavors together. I was not sure if I should try it but it turned out super yummy. Finally, the star of the show. OH MAN. The salmon skin roll. What a choice! It was divine. The skin was so crunchy and the flavors just went so well together. I keep thinking about that roll! I'm definitely coming back for it! Honestly I would give 4.5 stars if I could but I have to account for the awkward beginning. I just didn't feel welcome initially even though I felt better at the bar. I will still return!

Still pretty good sushi, especially when I'm in the downtown area this is my go to when I lived in Ghent a few years ago. Ordered take out the favs and oldy but goody tuna lover, salmon lover, star roll. Ordered yaki soba noodles, edamame, and salmon sashimi. The prices have gone up but that seems to be a common occurrence.

What a great restaurant in a fabulous location in Norfolk. The service was on point with a lot to choose from on the menu and daily specials. The restaurant was clean and very accommodating, perfect for a date night or even family dinner. We enjoyed appetizers from the chef's recommendations as well as the happy hour choices. The rolls will surprise you with the range of options as well as the culinary twists. Definitely check this place out!

If you're looking for sushi in Hampton Roads, look no further. This place is top-notch. I came here on recommendation of a Japanese acquaintance of mine, who noted that the quality was unparalleled. Verdict: it was. We slept on this gem (hidden down 21st st in Ghent) way too long! My husband and I went rather early on a Friday evening, and found it was pleasantly quiet, with a steady crowd that began to trickle in around 7. The atmosphere was clean, cozy, and sophisticated enough for a date night or casual dinner. We started with the Ika Geso - lightly fried calamari which was dusted in a seasoning and served with lemon. We then split the Charlie Brown roll and Tuna Ninja roll. The torched scallop on the Charlie Brown roll melted in our mouths - it was unlike any sushi we'd ever had before. The tuna in the tuna ninja roll was of a similar quality - delicate, clean, and flavorful. Everything came out to about $50 - a solid deal.

My favorite sushi restaurant in the area! I used to come to Koshi all the time pre Covid for Lunch when I lived closer. They had the best sushi and sashimi lunch specials for the price/quality. Unfortunately, Koshi has changed their hours for dinner only post Covid. The staff is always friendly and formal. They all wear traditional Japanese kimono tops and attentive in my experience. Sushi Chefs are also welcoming and always greet me when I come in! Keep in mind that Koshi is closed on Mondays. Parking is limited to street parking and there is a parking garage under the Twenty One Apartments for guests on the first floor. The restaurant is clean and has sleek lighting along the sides of the walls by the booths and for there fish tanks. It has an intimate setting, which is nice for a date night or with friends. I also like how they have a bar area on the right side with high tops, and then another bar area in front of the sushi chefs. My boyfriend and I love to eat and ordered quite a bit of food. Everything we ordered was delicious! Dinner for Two: this option is on the last page of the menu. It comes with miso soup and a house salad. You get to choose 2 items from a list of menu items for each course (appetizers, simple sushi rolls, special sushi rolls, and a dessert). -Appetizers: -Gyoza was delicious and came in a set of 5. This did not taste like the frozen ones and the kitchen took the time to pan fry and steam the gyoza. Came with a side of gyoza dipping sauce that complimented this dish. - Sushi Appetizer was in the form of nigri, which has a scoop of rice under each piece of sashimi. This had a variety of a few different fishes including Ahi Tuna, Salmon, Tilapia, and Shrimp. This tasted fresh and the quality was 10/10! -Simple Sushi Rolls: You can choose from a few different rolls and we chose the 2 below. -Spicy Tuna Roll: the spicy tuna was flavorful and had the perfect balance of spice. Came in a order of 6 pieces and included avocado in the roll. - Spicy Salmon Roll: the spicy salmon was not as spicy or flavorful compared to the spicy tuna. It was still delicious and also came in an order of 6 pieces. -Special Sushi Rolls: You can choose from a few different rolls and we chose the 2 below. - Red Roof Roll: this roll has shrimp and avocado topped with spicy tuna, scallion, spicy mayo and house sauce. It was delicious and my favorite roll. Very flavorful and aesthetically pleasing to view. - Double Spicy Salmon Roll: this roll has spicy salmon and cucumber topped with salmon, avocado and spicy mayo. This was also delicious and is an awesome choice for salmon lovers. This was my boyfriends favorite roll. -Dessert: You can choose between Ice Cream and Crème Brûlée. We chose the Crème Brûlée and loved it! This had the right creamy texture and caramelized sugar topping. It also was topped with raisins and dried fruit, which I thought was odd. I would have preferred fresh fruit or nothing at all. Chicken Katsu Don: also came with a miso soup and house salad. This is a panko battered chicken deep fried and stir fried cabbage over bed of rice. Traditionally it's made with pork and I was surprised chicken was the only option in the menu. The chicken was moist and had a crispy exterior coating. I love cabbage and wanted more of this while eating the chicken Katsu. It's a nice pairing with the fried chicken and rice. Maki Dinner: we had too many soups because this dish also had a miso soup and house salad. Yes we ate all 3 soups and salads lol. This dish came with a California roll, spicy tuna roll and one special roll. We chose the Double Spicy Salmon Roll again, because my boyfriend loves Salmon. All three rolls were great and I like that the Sushi Chefs put the right amount of rice and filling ratio for each roll. We definitely cannot visit Koshi as often as we would like, due to living further away. But when we do, we make it worth it! My boyfriend and I also finished everything in one sitting because we are the foodies that enjoy food! Overall I recommend everyone to visit Koshi for your sushi and sashimi fix in the Norfolk area! The quality of the fish is amazing for the price, and each dish tastes authentic.

    Ask the Community - Koshi

Is it all you can eat sushi?

It's not all you can eat, but the menu has several pretty good combos that will leave you satisfied. The rolls are pretty decently sized and shouldn't allow you to leave hungry.

    Can you get brown rice?

No they only offer white rice and sushi rice for the rolls.

SKIP Kotobuki in Norfolk - Worst Sushi Experience EVER…read more Kotobuki in Ghent is a disaster. I gave this long-running spot a second chance, after a poor first experience, and it was a mistake. A friend insisted we return, and the service was shockingly bad, the sushi was subpar and the overall experience was the worst. From the moment you walk in, Kotobuki screams neglect: dead plants, servers dressed like they're doing yard work and a pervasive smell of old fry oil. We had reservations for the "traditional Japanese" sunken-table room, where we removed our shoes and climbed into our seats. One dirty pair of slippers sat at our table, while a random pair of construction boots lay abandoned nearby. The "ambiance" was completed by 70s soft rock -- Lionel Richie instead of "traditional Japanese" music. Our server took my order for a dirty Stoli martini, then disappeared for an absurd amount of time only to return and say they couldn't make it -- with no explanation. We hunted through the limited menu while our server vanished completely. The owner eventually stopped by, and I had to specifically request a sushi list. Tired of sitting cross-legged, I briefly put my feet into the pit under the table. Rather than place my bare feet on the filthy floor, I slipped my shoes back on for a moment. That's when the owner's daughter stormed over and aggressively accused me of saying, "Screw you and screw Kotobuki -- I'm not following the rules!" She launched into a rude, insulting lecture about "Japanese custom" while I sat there stunned. I immediately took my shoes off again, just to de-escalate, but the evening was ruined. No customer should be verbally assaulted over something as basic as not wanting bare feet on an obviously dirty floor. In an awkward position, not wanting to ruin the evening, I ordered my food. The sake was watery and flavorless, the house salad was sad, wilted iceberg lettuce drowning in bottled ginger dressing, and the sushi arrived lukewarm with questionable rice that called for a palate blinding amount of wasabi. It was boring, poorly prepared, and far below average. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Hand to God! Had this not been a special evening with a dear friend, I would have walked out the second the owner's daughter chastised me at the table. Management at Kotobuki clearly doesn't care about customer service or basic standards -- especially when family members are allowed to treat patrons this way. "Japanese tradition" doesn't excuse poor hygiene, rude staff or substandard food. In America, we have health codes for a reason. If you want decent sushi in Norfolk, go literally anywhere else. Kotobuki is just a lazy dive. There's nothing special on the menu, very little sushi selection and nobody seems to care. If you choose to ignore this warning, lower your expectations folks, you are about to be disappointed. The only thing good about this restaurant, is the opportunity to tell you how much it sucked.

California roll was fine. The assortment of tempura was nice, but you get 2pcs of shrimp. All in all the Bento Special was pretty okay! Now going on with my side of salmon roll. Well, I always take a pic so you all can see the ratio if rice and protein. And look st my pic. Too much rice! I had to even take some out of the roll. While the staff tends to speak quickly, their personalities and attentiveness more than make up for it, creating an atmosphere that feels both polished and inviting. The atmosphere is largely beautiful, with a thoughtfully designed main space that immediately makes a strong impression. That said, some of the smaller details could use attention: a worn menu, a very small and plainly styled bathroom, peeling paint on the ceiling, and a stray balloon in the corner stand out in contrast to the otherwise elegant setting. The big picture is clearly prioritized here, and while the space still looks great overall, tightening up those finer details would elevate it even more. The drinks are straightforward but effective--flavor-wise they're perfectly fine, but they're generous on the pour, which absolutely earns them five stars. And the sushi is the real standout. The quality of the fish is exceptional--arguably the best in the city. Instead of leaning on Americanized gimmicks, the menu feels much closer to authentic sushi, letting the freshness and craftsmanship speak for themselves. All things considered, this is an excellent spot that balances quality, professionalism, and authenticity, and it absolutely earns a five-star rating.

We ordered two because the menu made them seem innocent and petite; they are not. Delicious though. The ebi shumai was also excellent, and even the hot green tea hit the spot. Zero complaints about the food. Everything came out fast, hot, and tasting like somebody in that kitchen actually cares. Service was super quick, though there was one slightly funny moment when our server came to take the order, we said we needed a minute... and she just stood there silently at the table like this was some kind of pressure-based game show. Not rude, just a little intense for people who like to pretend they need time before ordering the exact same thing they already wanted. The restaurant itself is small, simple, mom-and-pop vibes. When you walk in the place looks so pretty with all the Sakura flowers and art work. For dinner, I ordered chicken and shrimp teriyaki with mixed veggies and rice. The new restaurant and the grand opening made it so busy. My teriyaki meal was a little mediocre. The shrimp was great and the chicken was alright. The mixed veggies made it too soggy with the cabbage with the broccoli. In addition, I also ordered a sweet potato roll. The sweet potato roll was the star or my meal. I really enjoyed the roll and it was the best out of everything I ordered there. I would like to return for their lunch specials and try them again on a less busier day.

Sakura Teriyaki & Sushi Express launched its Grand Opening in the heart of Ghent's Colley Avenue on…read moreAugust 2nd of this year. Stationed to the immediate left of the historic Naro Theater, it took over the spot formerly occupied by Fruitive, a plant based health food restaurant that still has a location in Virginia Beach. This is the first restaurant I have tried bearing the Sakura name. There are several others in our area, and their cashier told me this one is solely owned and independent of the others. Its name has been shortened to Sakura Express on their Yelp page. Their employees have been wearing caps etched with the Sakura Express name. A Sakura Express location is also listed for Suffolk that has a much larger menu. The current menu here is very limited with no sashimi, nigiri, or desserts offered at this time, and which are available at their Suffolk location. When I asked the cashier if their menu will later be expanded, his reply was "I'm not sure." This is a no frills operation, and their offerings are served in disposable containers. There is a counter space at the right as you enter with plastic utensils and sauces wrapped in plastic. Most of their business is take-out. For those who want to dine in, there are three two-top tables in front and three four-top tables in the back with a few additional bench seats provided. They were offering a 20% discount during their Grand Opening period through to August 20th. After four dine-in visits, I have tried the following: SHU MAI SHRIMP DUMPLINGS: Ordered from their list of Appetizers, a total of 5 dumplings was cited, but I received an extra one to make it 6. I was craving some tender steamed Shu Mai dumplings with some of the pink from the shrimp showing through. These were served with a fried crusty texture with the shrimp being completely ground with no visible pink. Their shrimp flavor only barely came through. My Rating: 3 Stars. TUNA ROLL: This one was ordered from their list of Classical Rolls and came in 8 pieces. They were prepared in traditional hosomaki style with the seaweed on the outside in small bite sized pieces, which is always my preference. The ratio of rice to tuna and the warmth of the rice were just right. The seaweed came apart on some of the pieces, revealing a need for tighter construction. The wasabi displayed a bright neon green tone and delivered a nice kick. Overall, this roll provided a very pleasant taste experience. My Rating; 4.5 Stars. SALMON ROLL: This one was also ordered from their list of Classical Rolls and also came in 8 traditional hosomaki style pieces. The ratio of rice to salmon, and the warmth of the rice, were both on target again. Unfortunately, the pieces emitted a fishy odor, which killed their overall taste experience for me. My Rating: 2 Stars. VOLCANO ROLL: Deep Fried Crispy Roll, Tuna, Crab Meat, Salmon, and Avocado with Spicy Mayo and Eel Sauce on top. This one was ordered entirely by my mistake from their list of Specialty Rolls. I do not like any kind of sushi roll that comes fried and includes mayo. It came in 6 pieces, and I ate two of them. As expected, they didn't agree with me. I boxed up the rest and laid them atop one of the trash barrels outside, in case a homeless person might find them. No Rating. Again, this one was my mistake. RAINBOW ROLL: This was a California Roll with Tuna, Salmon, Avocado, and White Fish on top, which was Red Snapper. This was another entry from their Specialty Rolls and came with 6 pieces. The California Roll was the first Uramaki style "inside-out" roll invented in the United States with the seaweed on the inside instead of on the outside. The Rainbow Roll is an enhancement of the California Roll. I ordered this one for its attractive presentation and rainbow like colors. The Avocado was a bit mushy for my tastes, but the flavors of the other ingredients same through well. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. CHICKEN TERIYAKI: Listed under their Teriyaki offerings, I ordered mine with noodles instead of rice at a one dollar upcharge. A few mixed veggies, mainly broccoli and cabbage, were included A generous portion size was provided. The flavors from the chicken and noodles came through nicely at first but diminished rapidly. The teriyaki sauce settled at the bottom of the container was too watery for my liking and left an aftertaste. My Rating: 3 Stars. My average food rating came out to 3.4 stars, which I rounded down to my final 3-star rating and will stand for now. My rating is about equivalent to a grade of C-Plus at this time. Their staff members are young, friendly, and very conscientious about doing a good job. Hopefully, quality and consistency will improve over time. They are also facing stiff competition, as Ghent has two excellent and well established full service sushi spots nearby on 21st Street. With lots of busy foot traffic along Colley Avenue, I wish them the best of future success at this location.
