I took my daughter here because she wanted sushi. As my adventurous kid we get to try fun places like this her her siblings aren't around. We loved the sushi!

It saddens me to give a poor review, but it's also important when you're spending $400 (we had 7 adults) that you spend your hard-earned money in a place that brings you joy. Last night was our last time at Kotobuki. Before arriving, I peeked the menu and recent reviews. I was already taken aback by the poor, newest reviews and asked my sister if she had been recently (this spot is in her neighborhood). It was planned, so we went. Low-lights of the meal: Service was ungodly slow. It wasn't packed. When we arrived, 4 other tables in the whole place. No small shared plates were brought for a solid 20 minutes although we ordered multiple shared apps across the table. My grandma finally got up to ask for a fork at the bar. Food took forever to arrive. Salad that was included in a meal wasn't brought. The edamame was overcooked. How do you mess up edamame? It was nearly grey, soft, and barely salted. The sushi was nearly inedible. The cuts were awful (photo included where you know the sushi isn't being served right because of the jagged edges).. The sauces were non existent (other than the tuna tataki that was drowning in 3 sauces). The tempura dinner was inedible. Zero salt (my husband went looking for salt because it's never on the table and the service was .......). Really unfortunate, honestly.

This is definitely in my top ten places to eat. The food is amazing and the service is impeccable. Being a vegetarian is not always easy unless you're eating at Kotobuki. On top of having a nice selection they are very accommodating to change most dishes into a vegetarian version. I like that there's two types of seating. We usually do traditional table and chairs but they also offer traditional Japanese seating. When you find yourself in the area, stop by an amazing meal that will have you coming back again and again.

It's so hard to find vegan sushi - luckily Kotobuki has a whole vegan menu! This place is very casual and our waiter was so kind, truly killing it despite being the only waiter there on that night! The Veggie Spring rolls are a solid appetizer, and my favorite rolls were the Volcano and the Wrapped Salmon, was not a huge fan of the Mango Salsa roll. I really appreciate their variety of mock meats/seafoods to incorporate into their rolls so vegetarians are not left with cucumber rolls. My parents also loved their Udon soups and non-vegan sushi as well.

2024 Not much has changed but slightly better. Still very slow service, this time they said someone called out sick. Sushi quality is fine. Had the sushi sashimi combination. Prices are steep but that's everywhere i suppose. 2021 I haven't been here in probably 4 years but I just Came for lunch with coworkers. Had the sashimi combo and the quality of the fish is just ok. Small pieces of fish also The service is so slow it took almost an hour and all 5 of us ordered sushi and they weren't complicated orders, we're talk tuna avocado roll type stuff

Kotobuki had a good vibe and is always busy with customers. The takoyaki appetizer was not as good as I thought it would be because the dough was not fried enough, so it was pretty gooey inside. The chirashi bowl was very good and had a lot more sashimi than I thought there would be. The rice underneath all the sashimi has furikaki on it, so it made the bowl extra special. The parking here is only street parking, but there are a lot of spots for street parking on 21st street.

I wished I could have dine- in, but had to resort to take out. From the outside looks plain, but when you enter it nice clean modern and traditional Japanese seating. I did order avocado with eel, oshinko roll, tuna roll and tuna/salmon avocado roll. I always compare how much rice they use, and by looking at the pic's it seems to be even proportions. All of what I ordered was eaten fast!! I will definitely come back and try the Japanese seating area experience!

I've visited Kotobuki a couple of time now, and I really enjoy coming here! Definitely a solid spot in Norfolk. First, the staff is always kind and welcoming. The decor itself seems a bit dated, giving the same vibe of traditional sushi bars and restaurants when sushi burst on the food scene. It's kept tidy though which is always a plus. I think it's been in business for awhile. I've always dined with a friend and I've had several things from their menu: - Sushi sashmi combo lunch special - Pork katsu bento box - Crazy Angel roll - Sushi-sashimi dinner The sushi-sashimi lunch and dinner come with a soup and salad. The sushi has always tasted fresh. The pork katsu was tender, as well as nice and crispy. A few things to note: *one of the unique things about Kotobuki is that they have tatami seating (low tables where you sit criss-cross applesauce) *they are known to have one of the most extensive vegan sushi menus in the area. It's a full pager with a chock full of options which I'm sure all our vegan friends are finally feeling seen and heard with a sushi menu almost as long as ours. Note to self: try the grilled squid and octopus salad next time! Go out and support! Enjoy, Friends!

Kotobuki was a pleasant surprise and a pleasant experience in the heart of Ghent. FOOD: My buddy and I ordered so much sushi, as you can see in my picture :) We ordered tuna, salmon, and scallops, and they had toro, so we asked for that. I ordered the mixed vegetable tempura - delicious! This was lunch, so I ordered green tea to drink. SERVICE: Friendly and attentive! This was such a pleasant experience. Lunch wasn't too busy; I think there were 6 tables used. LOCATION: Okay, we sat at their Japanese-style tables, and let me tell you, I was surprised they even had it there! So unique!! Will I come back? 100%!!!

This table was a that table she told me it's not clean, maybe this table too expensive for me

Christmas Eve, I was a unfortunately went this place and ruined my holiday, I entered this place and the lady who work there she give me the bar seat, since Christmas Eve I prefer seat at the table so I asked nicely ( can I seat at the table ? ) She say ( No we don't have tables right now, Is here okay or No ? ) Way she talk very aggressive and rude, I pointed empty table and ask her nicely ( if you don't mind may I seat there ? ) She say ( No I didn't clean that table yet is that clean table to you ? I said we don't have tables is that clean table to you ?? Have a good night ) she sigh and walk a way and blah blah blah talk her self Well Wowwww, I was a think like what the hell was that ?? I should left there but I didn't because I'm not the person just walk a way so I seat, I told someone that what just happened and he asked her why she do that, and her answer was a amazing, Her answer was a ( yes I did, I did so what ? I didn't give to her table, why ?? because I don't want so ?? ) She had chance to apologize to me but she bring it Checks instead apologize, Is seat too expensive for me I guess ?? Okay if you don't want give me seat it's fine, at least talk nicely or say something else, not face to me dumb lie's with the ugly attitude garbage talk, All we know what we deserve when we go to any restaurant, we just want have a good meal and cozy night ?? She definitely have a problems, I didn't mad at her or any words I just laughed, she look old enough, she so ugly, I mean her Aditude, I don't judge peoples appearance, I feel sorry for her that her age as grown woman no educated poor aditude, lucky her this place is her mothers restaurant so she will never get fired otherwise who hire her as employee? By the way her brother work there too, he's such nice and sweet guy, not like her, If you ? work at your family business will you try your best what you doing or because you will never get fired anyway so just whatever and talk garbage to their customer because you want? I'm pretty sure Normal person will not act like her for sure, Are we go there spend our money and ruined our day ?? Like me even Christmas Eve ?? I definitely not recommend this place, You will spend your own money to get ruined your day, Food Expensive compared to other's but you get poor customer service, There is a lot of nice restaurants why should we go this place?? Basically I was a there Spend my money to ruined my Christmas Eve and I regret it,

I got the Kentucky Roll and Bhudda Roll. I don't like seafood so this was my first time trying sushi (vegetarian sushi). It was pretty good! They have a wide variety of vegetarian options. Would go back again.

Under those circumstances, it would be reasonable to expect that the quality of the food and service might not be up to par. But that wasn't the case at all - everything was excellent. Our waitress informed us that the Uni( sea urchin) was fresh. It was exquisite. The Eel Roll was perfect with a nice light sauce. My wife had several pieces of sushi, including egg, which were all very fresh. This restaurant offers a lot of selections that you won't find at your typical sushi establishment. The service was brusque that day because they were so busy - but very efficient. This has become our favorite sushi restaurant.

While the staff tends to speak quickly, their personalities and attentiveness more than make up for it, creating an atmosphere that feels both polished and inviting. The atmosphere is largely beautiful, with a thoughtfully designed main space that immediately makes a strong impression. That said, some of the smaller details could use attention: a worn menu, a very small and plainly styled bathroom, peeling paint on the ceiling, and a stray balloon in the corner stand out in contrast to the otherwise elegant setting. The big picture is clearly prioritized here, and while the space still looks great overall, tightening up those finer details would elevate it even more. The drinks are straightforward but effective--flavor-wise they're perfectly fine, but they're generous on the pour, which absolutely earns them five stars. And the sushi is the real standout. The quality of the fish is exceptional--arguably the best in the city. Instead of leaning on Americanized gimmicks, the menu feels much closer to authentic sushi, letting the freshness and craftsmanship speak for themselves. All things considered, this is an excellent spot that balances quality, professionalism, and authenticity, and it absolutely earns a five-star rating.

When you walk in the place looks so pretty with all the Sakura flowers and art work. For dinner, I ordered chicken and shrimp teriyaki with mixed veggies and rice. The new restaurant and the grand opening made it so busy. My teriyaki meal was a little mediocre. The shrimp was great and the chicken was alright. The mixed veggies made it too soggy with the cabbage with the broccoli. In addition, I also ordered a sweet potato roll. The sweet potato roll was the star or my meal. I really enjoyed the roll and it was the best out of everything I ordered there. I would like to return for their lunch specials and try them again on a less busier day.

Stationed to the immediate left of the historic Naro Theater, it took over the spot formerly occupied by Fruitive, a plant based health food restaurant that still has a location in Virginia Beach. This is the first restaurant I have tried bearing the Sakura name. There are several others in our area, and their cashier told me this one is solely owned and independent of the others. Its name has been shortened to Sakura Express on their Yelp page. Their employees have been wearing caps etched with the Sakura Express name. A Sakura Express location is also listed for Suffolk that has a much larger menu. The current menu here is very limited with no sashimi, nigiri, or desserts offered at this time, and which are available at their Suffolk location. When I asked the cashier if their menu will later be expanded, his reply was "I'm not sure." This is a no frills operation, and their offerings are served in disposable containers. There is a counter space at the right as you enter with plastic utensils and sauces wrapped in plastic. Most of their business is take-out. For those who want to dine in, there are three two-top tables in front and three four-top tables in the back with a few additional bench seats provided. They were offering a 20% discount during their Grand Opening period through to August 20th. After four dine-in visits, I have tried the following: SHU MAI SHRIMP DUMPLINGS: Ordered from their list of Appetizers, a total of 5 dumplings was cited, but I received an extra one to make it 6. I was craving some tender steamed Shu Mai dumplings with some of the pink from the shrimp showing through. These were served with a fried crusty texture with the shrimp being completely ground with no visible pink. Their shrimp flavor only barely came through. My Rating: 3 Stars. TUNA ROLL: This one was ordered from their list of Classical Rolls and came in 8 pieces. They were prepared in traditional hosomaki style with the seaweed on the outside in small bite sized pieces, which is always my preference. The ratio of rice to tuna and the warmth of the rice were just right. The seaweed came apart on some of the pieces, revealing a need for tighter construction. The wasabi displayed a bright neon green tone and delivered a nice kick. Overall, this roll provided a very pleasant taste experience. My Rating; 4.5 Stars. SALMON ROLL: This one was also ordered from their list of Classical Rolls and also came in 8 traditional hosomaki style pieces. The ratio of rice to salmon, and the warmth of the rice, were both on target again. Unfortunately, the pieces emitted a fishy odor, which killed their overall taste experience for me. My Rating: 2 Stars. VOLCANO ROLL: Deep Fried Crispy Roll, Tuna, Crab Meat, Salmon, and Avocado with Spicy Mayo and Eel Sauce on top. This one was ordered entirely by my mistake from their list of Specialty Rolls. I do not like any kind of sushi roll that comes fried and includes mayo. It came in 6 pieces, and I ate two of them. As expected, they didn't agree with me. I boxed up the rest and laid them atop one of the trash barrels outside, in case a homeless person might find them. No Rating. Again, this one was my mistake. RAINBOW ROLL: This was a California Roll with Tuna, Salmon, Avocado, and White Fish on top, which was Red Snapper. This was another entry from their Specialty Rolls and came with 6 pieces. The California Roll was the first Uramaki style "inside-out" roll invented in the United States with the seaweed on the inside instead of on the outside. The Rainbow Roll is an enhancement of the California Roll. I ordered this one for its attractive presentation and rainbow like colors. The Avocado was a bit mushy for my tastes, but the flavors of the other ingredients same through well. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. CHICKEN TERIYAKI: Listed under their Teriyaki offerings, I ordered mine with noodles instead of rice at a one dollar upcharge. A few mixed veggies, mainly broccoli and cabbage, were included A generous portion size was provided. The flavors from the chicken and noodles came through nicely at first but diminished rapidly. The teriyaki sauce settled at the bottom of the container was too watery for my liking and left an aftertaste. My Rating: 3 Stars. My average food rating came out to 3.4 stars, which I rounded down to my final 3-star rating and will stand for now. My rating is about equivalent to a grade of C-Plus at this time. Their staff members are young, friendly, and very conscientious about doing a good job. Hopefully, quality and consistency will improve over time. They are also facing stiff competition, as Ghent has two excellent and well established full service sushi spots nearby on 21st Street. With lots of busy foot traffic along Colley Avenue, I wish them the best of future success at this location.

Super glad we stopped in, the vibe is incredibly comfortable and cool and envelops your soul. Ambience: super cool, comfortable, a little dark, exposed brick walls with plaster patches, hardwood floors, heavy wood and leather furniture, incredible bar that is more like two bars in an L-shape with an unbelievable selection of anything you could ever want. This place is very solid feeling, you just feel safe and tucked in. Service: was fantastic, we met the executive chef named Ty who greeted us before we even sat down, just saw us sitting in the foyer bar and came over to say hello, very cool. We were greeted and seated by an absolute sweetheart upfront named Jackson and our server couldn't have been nicer, her name was Casey. Food: the food is all served tapas style, smaller plates, but well curated with interesting and innovative ingredients with beautiful presentation. Unfortunately, they were out-of four things that my wife wanted, she didn't want all of them simultaneously, she wanted one and they were out, and that happened three more times. Apparently, they often order in smaller batches and buy locally so sometimes they don't have as much as someplace buying in bulk, that's as much a positive as a negative, not a bad thing, just a bit of a bummer that she didn't get her first few choices. She ended up with the duck tacos which were good. We started with the brussels sprouts, which were also good and had nice presentation. We also started with bacon wrapped tots, the dish came with four of them and chili ketchup, beautifully presented, and rich, creamy, crunchy and yummy. I ordered the braised beef and fry bread and it was my favorite thing, very beefy flavored, warm and rich on soft pillowy fry bread with some cool crunch and crispy, thin plantain slices, very good. We started with a Chocolate Cherry Old Fashioned that was delicious. Overall the food was very good and the value was decent at around $12-$16 per plate. Overall: this was a really good experience and I'd go back to try some of the things they were out of and enjoy the incredible bar and stellar, considerate, thoughtful service. Definitely recommend!

Most of the food on the menu is delicious. They cook it on a grill and it really flavors the food. My go to combo is the steamed shrimp with fried rice, veggies, and butter sauce. It also comes with teriyaki sauce but i always sub it for extra butter. That butter sauce (ghee) will change your life. It makes the shrimp pop!! Its a good portion and a decent price. The beef rolls, chicken rolls, and dumplings are so good when they're hot and fresh. I was bothered because i only got 1 order and should have gotten more... Lol. They made my car ride home enjoyable. It was crumbs everywhere!! The dynamite chicken and the kobe beef are really good also. Very flavorful... I normally get a few things and share it with my kids family style. Its really good food... I am so glad they're still around... Best Japanese food around, hands down!!. Check them out!!! (I ate that food and forget all about the pics!! Sorry.. Lol. )

They serve Chinese style food but my go to are the dynamite bowls that is a really spicy sauce. I guess I can describe it as a spicy teriyaki sauce. The protein (chicken, shrimp,) is served with stir fry cabbage and broccoli. The portion is huge, so you will definitely get your money's worth. They did move from off Princess Anne Rd to Tidewater Dr where the old Some Da Eat restaurant was.

My husband always says he wouldn't know the food is vegan if i didn't tell him, it is always so filling & flavorful! The ambiance in here is so chill! I love that there are books, artwork, crystals & spiritual things for sale, but also a mini library & some chess tables & things to enjoy as well. This space always feels welcoming & peaceful & well worth their prices with their portions & unique offerings! The first time i went, it was a little confusing because there is only street parking & Jikoni cafe is inside of House of Consciousness, but they are the perfect place if you are looking for a little bit of magic & a good bite to eat!

We stopped by for dinner. I got the chili bowl and jabini pasta. My sister got the kush salad and a…read morechili bowl also. They sell different vegan dishes and most have what they call kush in them. It seems to be some sort of grain, but I really don't know. But I do like it. They have Alfredo, nachos, Mac n cheese, desserts, and smoothies. Some of the food is reasonable and some is pricey. A few desserts were $10-$15. I wanted to try them, but not for that price. We placed our order and looked around the store. They have updated the store/restaurant, so it's a more modern vibe. You can read books or hang out inside, so that's cool. The restroom was clean. There was plenty of seating to dine in. The store side sells books, crystals, jewelry, and more!! The cashier and cook were both very friendly!! I'm not vegan so I stick to what taste familiar to me to be safe. The chili is good, you wouldn't even know it's vegan. Definitely get the vegan nacho cheese to kick it up a notch. It also comes with chips. The alfredo came with veggies and kush. I'm glad it was saucy. I got it fully loaded so it came with a hash brown on top also. It was pretty good, but could use a little more seasoning to elevate the taste.. The last time I ate here the portions were a little larger, they seem to be noticeably smaller this time, so that's the only difference I've noticed. The kush usually confuses my stomach for a few days afterwards. It also may make you feel full faster but, I think it's worth trying. If your a vegan you should check them out, but even if you're not you can probably find something to try! Check them out!!
