But if you go to hibachi to be entertained, then you should skip Sapporo. An egg was tossed, an onion volcano occurred, but then it was straight to the frying of rice. The food was great. Came out extremely fast, as expected. We shared a hibachi table with one other family and we were the only ones there on a Friday night. Perhaps it was the weather. Nonetheless, service is great on a slow night. Environment was about what you'd expect from a hibachi place, outside is a little sketchy, but don't let it deter you. This place is a definite NO for me. My kids ordered Shirley Temples, and one of them tasted like plain red water. When we brought it to the waiter, who is also the owner, he told us they were out of Sprite. If that was the case, why not inform us instead of serving it anyway? We asked for a water instead. When the check came, he still charged us for the Shirley Temple. When we asked him to remove it, he said they "don't do that once you've received it." I insisted, and he eventually removed it, very reluctantly. He then commented that he "doesn't make any money off us," which made no sense considering we were a large party spending over $180. The remark felt unprofessional and unnecessary. The ambiance was dull and nearly empty. There appeared to be only one cook, two staff members assisting intermittently, and the owner acting as the sole waiter. Overall, I felt disrespected by the way the situation was handled. The fact that the waiter was also the owner makes it even more concerning. Even if this were the only Japanese steakhouse in Virginia, I would not return. read more

Ummm, I would love to give this place at least an OK rating, but I did not even finish my food and that is usually not the case for me. I love hibachi and have had this restaurant on my radar to check out in hopes of making this a go to hibachi place near home. Well... I will not be back, well at least for not the dine in hibachi experience. But I imagine the same cook we had for our dine in experience will be the same if we ordered to go. The vibe inside is just blah and dated. Staffing is super low, but we could look past that for an awesome meal. But the meal did not hit at all. The rice... under cooked. I even asked for it to be cooked again or even use my same rice and cook it more... still a fail. My husbae ordered double chicken and it appeared we had the same amount. I could go on, but this place did not hit any high marks. I am not sure how long they have been here, but from the outside looking in, they may have been around at least for 5 years, so I imagine at some point they were good. And on the night we dined in, us and about 10 others dined in. I did notice others eating, but no way they were tasting the same food we were eating. I sincerely hope you all improve all around. We watched the only other table in the restaurant have their food cooked, ate, received their checks, and left prior to the chef even coming to our tables. Food was good. We had been to this restaurant about 10 years ago and it was decent. Took our grandkids recently, so they could enjoy the antics of the grill chef. We waited and finally he came out. Only said hello...hardly no cooking tricks and the two he did failed. YumYum sauce was runny with no flavor. The food was mediocre, but portions were small, but prices had gone up!, First time EVER we didn't need a box for left overs. It was very expensive for what we got out of it. I've ordered numerous times for take out, but have been back at least 3x since my last review. Service has GREATLY improved. You don't have to wait forever for a hibachi table to fill up now to get your order. Much quicker, more attentive and HAPPIER employees. They've taken care of their building issues, i.e. wavy floor, icky bathrooms, etc. The food is still very good, love their miso soup, the salad dressing is bland and too much of it. Nice little spot. I'm unsure why I don't come more often. Actually, I do. I like hibachi but I've never been to a hibachi restaurant where The smell of smoke and food was in my clothes, hair, etc. Despite that, it's nice entertainment while you dine especially if you have kids or with a group of friends. The food here is immense. By the time my meal is ready, I'm already full and need a to-go box especially if I order sushi beforehand. Hibachi can be considered pricey to some but as much food as you get, i think it's worth it. Sometimes I get two more meals out of my to-go plate. I love the salad and the ginger dressing, however, I think they use the ginger dressing with honey here. We prefer the plain ginger dressing. Next time I'm here, I'll ask if they have the plain ginger dressing. read more

We went to Sapporo on Saturday night. We were able to book a reservation for the hibachi. We had never been here before so we were looking forward to giving them a try. The service was very good. They seated us quickly and got us started on drinks immediately. The food was reasonably priced, the chef was amazing and fun. I would highly recommend this hole in the wall restaurant! The family atmosphere was a pleasant experience. We will definitely be back! read more

I've watched as the quality of the food has gone down here over the last few years it use to be good, now it's meh. Not really worth it, never tried gas station sushi but I'm guessing this is what it would taste like almost like it has some kind of general purpose cleaner mixed in. Absolutely no other guest in the restaurant on a Saturday night. Food was mediocre. My party of 4 met with another party of 2 and we set together. When we got our bill a "13% service charge" was added to it. I questioned the service charge as anyone should because I was only paying for 4 meals and couldn't understand why the charge was there. The lady cashier scrambled for words and said it was because we were a party of 6 but she didn't know why he charged us each the service charge. She did not offer to take it off. Love this place. Only been here three times, but for the options Suffolk has available for hibachi..... I would take it over a chain one. We get off late from work on the weekends and they have always been accommodating and very friendly even though we come in an hour before closing. read more

Excellent food and tasty sake! Don't let the hole-in-the-wall exterior fool you. Our chef was efficient and skilled, and the fried rice was great without being too dry. Hibachi meat was cooked just right, although I would have liked a few more vegetables. Our waitress kindly let us practice Japanese with her as she speaks five languages (!). I haven't gone here on over 7 months because of three bad experiences. I have them that many tries. The food was good the first time so I let the lack of customer service slide. The second visit the food was still good but customer service was a little improved. The third time the food was bad the service was worse and the place was not well kept. They had really gone down hill. When I drove by on a Friday and Saturday night and only see about 4 or 5 vehicles there it tells me something probably hasn't changed and I question the freshness of the food. I met a work friend for dinner and agreed that we would check out this place. It is in between some tire shops in downtown suffolk. Slow night and we waited sometime for our order. The waiter was kind and attentive. The sushi rolls were wrong and when I spoke to the manager about making a Philadelphia roll with cream cheese he argued and said we don't make it like that. They had taken tuna salad and rolled it in rice while even in their menu it said cream cheese salmon etc. I love sushi enough to eat it 3 or 4 times a month but I will not be back if you cannot make my order correctly. Give them one shot but don't let it be a date as there is dirt all over the door and not too much ambience to impress a lady friend. I thought about taking a date here at one time and I'm glad that it ended up being just one of my buddies. read more

Very disappointed! My boyfriend and I really wanted sushi/hibachi and heard great things about this place so we decided to give it a try. After about 45 minutes of us sitting at our table we had only had our appetizers. One of the other ladies asked if there was only one chef, and the waiter said that indeed there was. We were the third table to get sat and the chef was just beginning to start on the first table. The waiter said that our food could be cooked in the back, and everyone at our table decided to do that since we didn't need the show! When our food finally did come out, it was disgusting. Sadly not what I was hoping for. Arrived early ordered the Lunch combination sushi and sashimi. While the miso soup was hot and flavorful. My lunch combo was not. Frozen fish no matter what type it is tuna, red snapper, or salmon will Taste like a freezer no matter how fresh it is. Nothing appetizing about crunching into tiny ice crystals, when looking froward to the supple texture and mellow flavor of raw (fresh) fish. : ( Really disappointed when I tried to explain that to the chef, he told me that I was wrong and that The fish was just cold. To make matter a little worse was the rice wasn't completely cooked either. It had too much tooth to it, there should be come texture to rice and no mush but you really should not be bitting into it either. Worst Sushi EVER. read more
