I absolutely LOVE this place, it's so overlooked but such a gem. I always do the all you can eat and it never disappoints!

I seen a lot of people complain about the waitress. While people tend to not realize people in other country's tend to be really neutral and not act like waiters/waitress of American decent. The food was top notch! The rolls were absolutely huge and the fish tasted so fresh. The price is step at almost $36 a person but I will gladly pay that for what I received! The one thing to note is that this is a mom and pop sushi joint. There is one waitress. So if you are ordering AYCE Sushi I'd order as much as you'd like due to her being busy and being a one hour time limit. Nice little cozy Sushi spot in San Pedro. I was really disappointed with both the service and the experience. We were encouraged by our server to order the all-you-can-eat option because she said it would be cheaper for us. Unfortunately, one of the sushi rolls was not good at all, and we barely ate it. We were told that if we didn't eat it, we would be charged for the leftovers, so we explained that we simply didn't like the roll. Instead of offering a replacement or trying to make things right, our server took our plates away. Later, when we asked to order more sushi--as you would expect with an all-you-can-eat meal--we were told "no" because she had already closed out the bill. We had never said we were finished eating. Paying for all-you-can-eat but then being denied the opportunity to order more food made no sense and completely defeated the purpose of choosing that option. I visited this sushi restaurant on Saturday night with my mom and my two teenage nieces. The food was actually very good, and everything seemed fine at first. Unfortunately, our experience took a very unpleasant turn when we saw a cockroach right next to our table. At that moment, the server was clearing our plates. I calmly pointed it out to her (I'm not someone who likes to make a scene), and instead of reacting appropriately, she simply picked it up with a napkin and continued cleaning the table as if nothing had happened. That was honestly very disturbing and unsanitary. When the check came, I was already uncomfortable but still paid my bill. As I was leaving, I was told I hadn't left a tip. I still left $5, which, given the situation, felt more than generous considering we had just been dining next to a cockroach. What made things worse was that after seeing the tip, the server began speaking angrily in Korean, seemingly assuming I wouldn't understand. I chose not to engage or cause a scene. I stayed at the hotel beside this establishment for a festival twice and I've always been pleased with my food. I order my food over the phone for pick up without any hassle and my food always meets the quality I received the first time I had it a year ago. I always order a few rolls as well as the spicy garlic edamame. The spicy garlic edamame is a must with every order, the flavor is rich compared to many other places where I have ordered a version of this item. I have been to this place maybe once before but I never really went back because it is in an awkward place. There is not a lot off foot traffic around, and I am not really sure where to park. Admittedly, these are not barriers that I cannot overcome. They are not a mountain half the size of Fuji, they are just inconveniences that I rather not deal with. And then one day, I was walking back to my car, and I saw someone who I thought might use a meal. I later learned his name was Oliver. I asked Oliver, if he would like a meal on me. He explained that he was just going to KFC for something to eat, so yeah, he could eat. We both entered and sat and enjoy the fare of Sushi 21. And the place was a pleasure--- a big Arigato! I owe to them. As I sat with Oliver, I took notice of the decorations. One specifically called my attention. It was a Japanese person, dressed in a regal robe, maybe a Kimono, scribing in parchment, not sure if it was papyrus, cause that belongs more to Egyptian culture. I wondered what the person was writing? A recipe for miso soup? A Haiku? Wisdom for the ages? I chose wisdom for the ages cause the person seemed lost in wonder yet focused in thought. That is how I get when I write wisdom for the ages. One of my favorite Japanese proverbs is the following: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, and the second best day is today. Maybe I said it wrong. But I know I got its spirt right. I thought that Oliver could benefit from this moment. He shared that he had moved to California for a fresh start after painful years, but he already felt behind. He did not share much just that. And I did not want to hear more, if he was not ready to share more. I am glad that he accepted my offer, as I would want someone to buy me some food, some good food with color and dignity, if I ever was so hungry and broke. And this place did offer good food that had color and dignity. This is best represented in Oliver's order: a Bento box. As the picture shows his chicken teriyaki Bento Box came with rice, miso, some gorgeous colors, and more sushi that I expected. I tried one of his shrimp. It was good but I wanted sweet shrimp with some wasabi under the shrimp, you know the kind that cleans your nostrils. He enjoyed every bite of his food. He cleaned his plate. He did not talk much, but heard a lot from me. He was kind, and allowed me share and he reflected as best he could. He was trying hard to practice principles of good personhood. And listening to me was a grand way to achieve the feat. He maintained eye-contact, did not use his phone, and shared that he was aiming to do better in life, in general and for that he needed focus to make good decisions. It was a grand sushi meal. My salmon and tempura roll hit the spot, in such a way where I enjoyed every piece with gusto. It looks pretty too. They cared about their presentation. The edamame came too hot to eat. Once it was cool, it was exactly what I needed--- garlic edamame that was not spicy. I have grown to hate spicy as I have grown in years. Two final interesting points. The miso soup did not come with a spoon. The server explained to me that in Japanese culture the miso waas drank from the bowl, like Belle learned to do after seeing the beast. I have been too many sushi spots and I have always received a spoon with my miso. Next time I will try to slurp my miso, and see how that goes. I have done it with other soups and I love it because the flavor nestles in the bottom and then you slurp and get concentrated flavor, like an injection of uncut flavor in the palette. The second interesting point is the concept of kintsugi which basically means that a broken vase can be fixed with gold, and the final product is a broken vase with gold lined cracks. The end result makes it more beautiful. Imagine a flawless beauty, like the Mona Lisa, with some milk foam on top of her lip. The messiness atop her smile is a wink to remind us that human beauty is cut and rebuild, and that journey makes the beautiful glow with meaning, like the wrinkles of worry in a mom when her son breaks her leg. Hopefully Oliver one days become the vase with broken cracks filled with gold, and if he does he sees himself as more beautiful for the journey that took him to that point. read more

Soo immediately walking in noticed that there was only one waitress.. came for the all you can eat kinda ridiculous 1hour limit including thier cooking time.. sooo we put are drinks in after filling out the options on all you can eat she asked me why I havent said i was ready to order... salad arrived no utensils no napkins no sauces no nothing provided on our 1 hour limit... after we ordered the first round she grabbed our menu and list and never returned it she was in a sense rude and cold never checked on us.. when it was time to pay she hovered acting like she was busy pacing back and forth standing behind us off to the side very rude.. Ok ok. I read the reviews and let's just say, if you can't beat my moms RBF then you ain't it. lol perhaps it's a culture thing, but I found the owners wife straight forward but not rude. Perhaps because I too have a RBF and can relate? Either way it was the best money I could have spent and the sushi was delicious. Service was fast and the salmon exquisite. I also tried the calamari salad which was fried calamari over a bed of lettuce and cabbage with a delicious dressing. Had a Philly roll and salmon roll. Really no complaints here. Will come back!!! I came in to try their all you can eat promotion after seeing the banner driving down the street. The sushi was inconsistent, both in taste and presentation. Unevenly cut, some pieces extremely big, and some of the fish, specifically the tuna tasted off. Additionally, the service was kind of slow, especially when bringing back the selection sheet, making us wait a while before being able to know what we would like to order next. The employees were nice and friendly, however you could overhear them arguing over something on the other side of the restaurant which was a little uncomfortable. read more

This place has been around for a very long time, it used to be great deal the ayce sushi was $21 hence the name of the restaurant, times have changed prices have risen, i used to enjoy this place often as a treat myself special. After covid they stopped ayce for a few years and they recently brought it back so i decided to go in and try again, the owner was the same guy super nice and respectful man and good sushi chef, but his wife i also met that day and she unfortunately is why i will not be returning to dine unless serious changes are made and it really saddens me to have to leave this review (dined in around 5pm on a Wednesday) she has been pretty infamous over the years for bad service and rude remarks hence the reviews but tonight she really crossed a line with me. There is an hour limit, 30 minutes in after my first round (appetizer) i wanted to order the main sushi course and she comes up to me and starts saying shes charging me more for not finishing as I'm still eating my last couple bites of salad and my handroll, i just wanted to put my order in for the next round very bad service and bad vibes completely ruined my appetite on top of her rude service, the one job she does have to do she does not do well at all the restraunt smelled bad of dirty mop water or something and the tables had the smell as well it seemed as if they used no spray or soap when cleaning off tables ever. Shortly before covid they had different staff there they where younger and managed the place very well where very kind and had a great attitude, the owner needs to get ahold of those people again and have his wife not ruin whats left of the restraunts reputation because its not going good The sushi quality was ok but not what it used to be some fish tasted not fresh and for charging more and receiving less quality is not ok in my book which is another reason why i will not be returning. You go out to treat yourself and your family to eat and your looking for 3 general expectations, -quality food -exceptional service -clean eating space This place did not meet any of those expectations tonight I understand times are tough and prices are rising and its hard to find good help but i urge the owner to find someone to help him manage the restraunt better again before he has no more customers read more

Sushi 21's food is so good, its service so friendly and efficient, and its atmosphere so comfortable, we did not bother to look for more options. Every dish we ordered was excellent. We always started with hot delicious miso soup and over the course of our visits enjoyed a variety of sushi rolls, bento boxes, tempura and teriyaki dishes. On our last night Kay recommended the yellowtail cheek meat. Wow! That is a memorable dish. If you like good fish, cooked well in interesting ways, go to Sushi 21. read more

No one makes it like they do. Chef really knows how to handle the Salmon Skins. Nothing fancy, just genuine people serving good food. Sushi 21 is the definition of a friendly, local spot. The staff knows regulars by name, and even when it's busy they treat everyone like family. I occasionally order Chicken Teriyaki Bentos and Red Dragon Rolls comfort food every time. As someone who used to eat here regularly (before I moved outta CA), I've had just about every special roll on their menu, and they were all tasty, fresh, and served up fast. They treat their regulars well, even if it's been a while since they've been back--I visit every time I'm in town, which is once a year or so. If you're unsure where to start, GET THE LAS VEGAS ROLL. Main lady was always grumpy yelling at the younger people to work faster (in their language). Cook was lazy when I ordered (3 separate lobsters rolls) and put all three rolls in a big plate ALL together. The ambience was with a sense of "hurry eat and leave". She is in my humble opinion, going to be the downfall of what used to be the best sushi restaurant that I have ever eaten at! Her attitude towards the customers, whom pay her bills is F'N disgusting and Appalling! Her husband needs to talk to his wife regarding this matter. He will lose his business over this..... She will definitely call you out if, she thinks that you did not tip enough! I'm talking loud and embarrassing and will have no problem even following you out the door. It's total BS! As a customer, you have every single right to give feedback and my way is with tip regarding service. If it sucks and you feel neglected and over looked, why would I tip you??? You didn't do your job and so, you should not be tipped! PERIOD! I have spoken to the owner regarding his wife's behavior and to no avail! So I stopped going.
