The spicy chicken is yummy, small chicken pieces. Julienned potatoes with the chicken, garnished with green onion. The chicken is tender. We were nearby for volleyball and we got a craving for sushi so we decided to give this place a try. Very authentic Japanese atmosphere and wonderful service. We had edamame and toriyaki to start and both were delicious. The rolls were beautiful and good. Those that had the tempura weren't great only because they tasted like they'd been fried in stale oil. This was the only reason for the one star missing. Freshen up the oil vat and it's a perfect 5 star rating. There was only one other group on a Friday night so I have to believe COVID still deters people. They also mentioned that Novi was having trouble with their water so they didn't have any ice for the drinks and they served bottled water which is great since you know they are thinking of the customer. read more

Walked down from apartment with a friend was gonna come in & dine but we had to use the restroom before we walk in the older gentleman says are u using the restroom we said yes he gets offended and says " when u walk into my restaurant u have to say u would like to use my restroom" "u can't just walk in without asking" it's a public restroom and if we was gonna dine in we definitely weren't now...terrible experience and didn't even eat there it's barely any customers in there so I can imagine why. The selection was so vast with items we love, it was tough to decide and now can't wait to go back and get another one of our favorite Korean and sushi items. I have been eating BiBimBap for nearly 38 years and would have to say, Sushi 1's version was right up there with the best that I have had! The Bulgogi was stellar in its own right! We do have a favorite sushi place, but with its location being a bit farther than we like, we have been wanting to secure a closer place to get Sushi and after dining at Sushi 1 earlier this week, this has been taken care of. The quickness of getting all of our food was highly appreciated and it always nice to get service with a smile! This place is a hidden gem and the best sushi in the Novi area. The fish is so fresh and I love the house salad because their ginger dressing is great. My favorite roll is the yum yum! If you don't like your rolls tempura just make sure to tell them because the menu doesn't indicate which rolls are tempura on the outside. If your around the area go check them out!! read more

I've only been there once and I'm impressed so far. My "gold standard" meal that I get to compare one Japanese restaurant to another is Tempura udon, a piece of Salmon Roe nigiri and a spicy salmon roll. No restaurant will have broth that can ever compare to the one from my favorite restaurant, but this is still really good. The udon noodles weren't overdone, and I love that the tempura is served on the side so they don't get soggy. The piece of salmon roe nigiri was great as well. Every so often, I visit a place where the salmon roe tastes soapy, that's an indication it's not that fresh. Sushi 1's was not soapy. As far as the spicy salmon roll, I'll have to deduct a star for that. First of, it's not very spicy at all. Second, there wasn't all that much salmon in the roll to be begin with. Lastly, the roll looks bigger than it is because of all the cucumber filler. I'm happy to see Sushi 1 also has a Korean menu, I'm definitely looking forward to trying that out as well. Two weeks ago I was driving past and had a hankering for some veg sushi. it was 430pm and they allegedly had just opened for dinner. I had really wanted to eat there for take out. There was one customer sitting in a far corner on one side drinking water waiting on someone I guess. Another table near front that had 4 or 5 folks sitting and waiting. One lady in front of me waiting at the front counter for her take out order and then me looking over their basic menu. Wishing i had the time & cash for some bibimbap... Finally the one dude working there takes my simple order - 1 pickled radish roll & 1 avocado cucumber roll - the prices seemed reasonable - i told him no wasabi please, & extra ginger please. He didn't ring me up and off he went into the back... After waiting 30 minutes for my simple order & still no food, and the dude still not coming around to even acknowledge my existence as a customer waiting to pay & receive my order... finally after 40mins. I gave up and walked out. I have no clue if there was any one else actually working there. I prefer to use a napkin, but when food is this good, you've gotta lick your fingers clean! This is especially true when it comes to the Korean style wing-dings. The sauce is bursting with flavor and the fried portion is crunchy and delicious. I would come back JUST to get these (and trust me, I will!). I think this is an excellent choice for those who like having their pals over to watch a good game of football and want to munch on finger food. This will hit the spot - I promise!!! If you're not into meat, another good choice is the kimchi soup. The rich flavors and simmering broth will leave you feeling warm, satisfied and in a relaxed mood, especially on a cold day. Five star sushi, but I gave four stars because they are significantly more expensive than other local places if you're ordering a few random rolls, like I usually do. (Ex, avocado roll here is 3.95, at my other sushi spot it is 2.50). It looks like lunch would be a good time to come; they offer a sushi lunch of 5 pcs sushi and a California roll for 9.95, which isn't bad. Hubby and I tried three rolls. 1) spicy salmon (which wasn't expressly on the sushi order sheet, but we asked and they made it for us). Very good. Came with big pieces of cucumber in it, which you could ask to be omitted if you wanted. 2) Vegas roll- this roll came out differently than a previous yelper described. It was very good, soft rice outside with shrimp tempura, crab, and two kinds of fish rolled inside. 3) California roll- the classic, flavorful and fresh tasting. Not an afterthought like I feel some California rolls can be. None of our rolls came out with any sauce, which I didn't request, but I was TOTALLY fine with it because I generally don't care for sauces on sushi anyway. I requested no masago on the California roll. The service was quick, attentive and friendly. I'll probably be back for lunch sometime. If you like Korean food, this place would open up a whole new world of possibilities for you. I'm only interested in the sushi though so that's what this review is based on. :) read more

Living in Novi, I have a high bar for sushi. Sushi 1 was just okay to me. I feel like this restaurant really catered to the more Americanized sushi. The service was timely, but the one thing that irked me was that we received the wrong sushi roll. When we got it, we asked which rolls were what and then noticed there was a crazy roll on there that neither of us ordered. When we asked the waiter to check, he pointed to the the crazy roll and said it was actually the Vegas roll. When we received our bill, I checked our sushi order, and the waiter totally misidentified the sushi and gave us the wrong roll unapologetically. I ate the sushi and enjoyed it, but didn't appreciate that we got the wrong roll and it was not corrected. read more

No where on the menu does it say that it is tempura fried. I was very disappointed to have received the fried roll. Been wanting to try this place for a while, so we got carryout. We were all disappointed. The sushi was blah. Way too many sesame seeds overwhelmed the taste of the fillings. We got some simple stuff just to try - California and shrimp rolls, and some udon. The udon was good and the tempura had flavorful batter. The sushi was overpriced, but the rolls were larger than the norm - more pieces. It would have been nice if that was clear on the menu. The menu was boring and uninformative. Many Japanese places around have pictures or better descriptions of their rolls. I was afraid to order certain rolls because I wasn't sure how they made them. We were tired and didn't want to wait and ask 20 questions to the waiter. Just make the menu more descriptive. The selection of sushi was also limited. The total menu had a nice selection however, so the name of the restaurant was misleading. Based on other reviews, it looks like the full menu may be their forte. I don't often find restaurants when they're still new and seeing as it's only been open a little more than a month, I was impressed and figured if anyone deserves a good review, it's them. Sushi 1 does a lot of things right that other places don't do. At first I was greeted by the decor of the place. It's nothing over the top and is very casual, which I enjoyed. However when the food came out, I was blown away. The presentation was Clean and fresh, and the flavor was incredible. I ordered a chicken teriyaki dish and a new volcano roll. Without a doubt in my mind this is the best sushi roll I've ever had, and the same goes for the chicken teriyaki. The roll I think was one of their more expensive specialties, but it's worth every penny. It's presented unlike anything I've seen and the flavor combination of the sauces and meat were incredible. I highly recommend this roll to anyone who goes there. The chicken teriyaki blew me away as well. The chicken was high quality and cooked perfectly, with a good ratio of sauce. No rubbery parts, no fat, no mystery pieces. The food is what showed me that this is actually a high class place, though presented very casually. In general I find the restaurant to be very humble. I spoke to one of the workers there who actually ended up being the owners' son, at which point I learned this this was a place owned and operated by ma and pa, doing all of the cooking and sushi themselves. I think because of this, they're able to offer a lot more than other places for your money. The food was incredible and the wait staff were very professional and attractive, which is a hard combination to come by in wait service. It might sound shallow but its always nice to have a server who isn't hard on the eyes, and when they're good workers i don't think you can ask for much more. The chef, his son and the wait staff were all respectful and easy to talk to. From what I could tell the others in the restaurant also enjoyed their experience, and our table neighbors told us they were eating the best chicken wings they've ever had (from a sushi place?!). Indeed, they looked awesome. I will definitely be going back and exploring the menu more, including those chicken wings! The sashimi was salmon, tuna and red snapper (the most popular among Americans?). Included a fried dumpling, a dollop of potato salad, California rolls and so forth. The miso soup (which I don't bother past the first spoonful at most places) was delicate and flavorful. My friend ordered BiBimBap and received all the Korean side dishes which she shared. Really close to home, so I go there for sushi a lot. The sushi is always fresh, and there's a decent selections of appetizers. Yesterday I tried the squid from the Korean entree menu. And it was delicious. Really generous portion, big enough to share. Also came with a ginger salad (delicious dressing) and miso soup, as well as a side of rice. Definitely going to try more of their Korean dishes. Sometimes it takes a long time to get the food out, and they don't have sea urchin, which is my favorite, so it's only a four star review.
