This place was cool as hell looking, it definitely gave me "The Whitney" vibes, it was a house built in 1929 by Charles Roger's, if you have a chance look up the story and it will make the experience of this place that much better. When you walk in the staircase alone just amazes you, we got seated right away. The elegance of this place is truly outstanding and it was very quiet and the sushi bar looked really nice. I ordered a Citrus Manhattan as a nice relaxing and refreshing cocktail and man did it hit the spot, at first it was very citrusy but give it a stir and it's quite fantastic. As an appetizer I ordered the Miso Soup and that was VERY delicious, the broth was very smooth. As for my Main Course I ordered two sushi rolls: Alaskan Roll & the Red Dragon Roll. Both rolls were very exquisite, the Red Dragon is something new I have never had before and I have to say that the spicy Mayo made it really good. I also had the Tempura Udon and it was very delicious. The egg yolk in the bowl was very creamy and the noodles were nice and soft. Everything here is very delicious. The restaurant has a romantic, upscale atmosphere, and the décor truly feels like a fine dining experience. We were seated on the upper floor, which made for a cozy and elegant evening. We ordered the gyoza, garlic butter mushrooms, mixed tempura, California rolls, a selection of sushi (can't remember the name), and a couple of drinks. The service was a little slow, but our server was friendly, attentive, and pleasant throughout the meal, so I appreciate her efforts. Unfortunately, the food was the biggest disappointment. Some dishes tasted like they had been prepared earlier than expected, though I'm not sure if that was intentional. Overall, the flavors and presentation were fairly average. Having enjoyed Japanese cuisine at many other restaurants, nothing we ordered stood out or left a lasting impression. The biggest contrast was between the restaurant's atmosphere and its food. I came here last night for dinner and I'm gonna be so honest.... I was underwhelmed. The host was very kind. He did change our reservation time twice for us but that was the extent of my good experience here. Because of traffic, the friend meeting me was a little late so I sat alone for a little bit. I told our waitress that... she came back a little bit later saying "are you ready to order" .... My friend still hadn't come and I already told her that. The thing is, I understand forgetting so that's what I thought happened. But it became clear that her attitude was intentional. While I was sitting alone, I noticed an ant crawling on my table that I had to kill & I was seated next to some windows and there was subsequently a FLY that I also had to kill ("but you didn't have to kill it"... shut up yes I did) I also had a sushi menu that was already written on. I dont know weird. I understand the appeal of the old house converted into a nice restaurant but it still just smelled like old house and lowkey like rotting wood. The windows also were clean. I dont know it was just bad ambience until it got dark. NOW THE FOOD... The miso soup was my favorite thing on the menu. So that is saying something. My two rolls were underwhelming at best. The fish was chewy.. but a bad chewy. There was barely any fish. The cucumber kimchi was bad. The cucumbers were not good quality. It felt like they were old actually. At the end, our waitress was lowkey rushing us. I swear it was the most I had seen her all night. She set the bill down, would split it for us... she said she'd split it after we put our cards down... what does that mean??? So whatever, me and my friend just paid 50/50 on the bill. (Even tho the menu expressly said that they can't split bills for parties of more than 8). We were only two people. Whatever. Dont come here unless you're just interested in cute vibes. read more

Just finished a lovely lunch at Shiro! The sun was beaming in the front windows and the atmosphere was serene. Outside, winter has gripped the area, inside, it was warm, bright and comfortable. Quickly greeted by staff. I have found Shiro to have efficient and consistent service. This was true today as well. Our food was quite nice, started with the side salad and miso soup. We had a few sushi rolls, the kappa, California and mushroom rolls. We ordered the Ebi Shumai: fried. For our lunch, the chicken katsu, fried so nicely and very tender. I would have offered them a fourth star had the server appeared to actually breathe. Fondly remember this conversion from a farm house to "Home Sweet Home". What a lovely mansion restaurant!! I had a Shiro Cosmo and cucumber kimchi to start. My date chose pork belly small plate, and let me try it. Very good, melted in your mouth. We tried two rolls to share, and ghey were both unique and flavor. I can't recall the names and didn't get photos of the menu, nor the food. It was a first date... I will say the sushi order sheet is not as effective as offering picture menu of the sushi offerings. The dinner menu has great options though. I staff was very pleasant. I recommend a reservation we did not have one but the wait wasn't bad they had to make sure they were staffed accordingly for reservations first. The place is an old house if you like old homes and they try to keep a lot of the original floors, windows and walls. The food was so flavorful and fresh. The Chilean seabass had the most amazing miso cream sauce it went to so well with the seabass the roasted vegetables and the spinach rice. The sushi rolls were cut to bite si that you didn't stuff your mouth and again very fresh. The shishito peppers were okay very garlicky but not really spicy and they were very soft. Not usually a fan of yellowtail but this restaurant changed my mind; it was so buttery, and of course, salmon sashimi is my favorite in general so I liked that the best. We ordered a few appetizers, the Lobster Spring Rolls and Pork Dumplings. They were both very good. The spring rolls were served with mashed potatoes which I wasn't expecting! lol My friend doesn't eat raw fish so he ordered the Teriyaki Chicken and I had an entire roll of sushi all to myself!!!!! This place is the perfect place for a dinner. Started out with the amazing Fatty Roll- this is a must get! The miso chicken is such a creamy savory dish that has a unique spinach rice on the side. I loved every bite of it. The chicken katsu was crispy to perfection. They have a wide selection of drinks & were affordable. I got the raspberry cosmo and it was sweet & strong just how I liked it. Did not come to take orders, had to go find a server and once order was placed, the time it took to have our food out was another 30-40 minutes. What a cool spot! You would not think that this old-style, 1800s or 1900s house would be the home of a sushi restaurant. The place itself is really cool. And the food matches the vibe. Lastly and the worst is ....I ordered a Filet Mignon thinking since it was Shiro I would get a top notch tasting Filet Mignon. It had ZERO TASTE ( NO spices on it what-so-ever), IT WAS NOT JUICY at all (no juice in, on or around it ...Zero) and eating it was like eating a BRICK. Great sushi spot. It is our go to place! I do recommend making reservations and I prefer sushi room for sushi! The sushi chefs are creative and make the experience fun. We love most of the rolls and specialty rolls. The chefs will gladly adapt them for your taste preferences. Why 4 stars vs 5 stars - slow service. I would say it could be due to labor shortage. But, I have coming here for maybe 20 years. Service was rarely one of Shiro's strengths. read more

Easily the worst service I have ever experienced, but the food makes up for it. Met my friend here for her birthday dinner, and we weren't greeted by a server until over an hour later, but only after my friend got up and asked another server what was going on. Took another 15 minutes for that server to come back to our table and tell us there was a mixup at the hostess stand so we never had a server to begin with, but that she would be taking care of us. We had plenty of time to look over the menus, so ordered right away. We ordered the spicy garlic edamame, Red Tornado Roll, Las Vegas Roll, and Angry Bird Roll. All of the rolls were amazing. Took a while for the edamame to come, and was severely undercooked. We were so hungry though so didn't bother to say anything about it (and it's not like our server was anywhere to be found anyways). My water cup stayed empty for most of the night. I asked for two sides of spicy mayo with our sushi, and we were halfway through with our sushi when we had to ask a different server to bring some for us. Then when our tiramisu came, our server left the dessert at the very edge of our table... and she kind of pushed that plate against the dirty dishes that were on the table to make room for it. She didn't even bother to clear anything off the table....we were shocked, to say the least, but just ended up stacking all the empty plates and pushed them to the side in order to make some room for us to share the dessert. I think I will be back someday because the sushi rolls were just that good, but being so neglected by our server the entire night left such a bad taste in our mouths. And never once did we get an apology, so not sure what was going on. Hopefully no one else has this bad of an experience! read more

This restaurant is very unique and inside a beautiful preserved mansion. The server was very good, especially with two small children. I got the teriyaki chicken and thought it was alright, but maybe more expensive than it's worth. It came with plain white rice and some cooked cabbage. I also got a miso soup and ginger salad that were similar to what I've gotten at other Japanese restaurants. I'll start with the positive... the 3 stars were for the food everything else was blah. Our entrees were delicious!!! The Chilean Seabass was by far the best I've had in years. I would come back everyday for that dish. We also had noodle stir fry, vegetable tempura, and a few sushi rolls. All tasted great... no complaints. Service: Service was a little hot and cold, new host sat us upstairs but never told our server so we sat there for +15min waiting for someone to acknowledge us. Other servers passed by and didn't say a word or look our way until I stood up to get someone's attention. This would be normal in a regular restaurant for other servers to walk past but this seating area was in a tight area with 4 other couples/families around us... very obvious that we were not being helped. Our server eventually found us and apologized and was great the rest of the night. Overall food service was slow as well. Took awhile to get our food and our appetizer came out after dinner salads because another server supposedly took ours and it had to be refired. Seating area: It's a unique experience to have dinner in a house but something was missing. Difficult not to compare and use The Whitney (Detroit) as the benchmark. This place has been around awhile but everything felt out of place or unfinished. I feel they are missing a Front The House Manager ... The entrance was dirty and unorganized ... some of the lights in the ceiling (upstairs) were out ... the cheap bamboo blinds looked janky ... some of the shelves that might have once had decorative items were empty ... walls "looked" dirty. I have been here twice now and each time has been about the same experience. I've been lucky enough where I've come during off times, so I haven't had to wait in line. I have tried the shaky, shaky, boom, boom roll, tornado roll, gyoza, and the takoyaki. The gyoza was supposed to be pan fried but it tasted more steamed/microwaved. It kind of taste of like any other frozen Gyoza you can buy at the grocery store. The takoyaki I thought it was flavorful I just wish the squid piece was a little bit bigger. The sushi, however, is definitely win for me. The tornado roll is my favorite! It's very creamy and the texture is perfect - it has a sweet, but savory taste and absolutely melted in your mouth! My real knock on this place is how slow the service is. We could be greeted with waters and then never spoken to again for 15 minutes. Each time I've come the service is extremely slow. Shiro is a super cool spot located inside a historic (and supposedly haunted) mansion. The iconic entrance and grand staircase are super cool and the whole place has a lot of character. The decor is sparse, but the architecture itself is the decor. Food selection and quality was excellent and the live music added to the atmosphere perfectly. The band's spot atop the stairs allowed the music to permeate the entire house without it being overpowering. Definitely get a reservation if you're going for a weekend dinner. read more

When we arrived, I immediately recognized it - it's an awesome old mansion that I've driven past but never dined at. We ordered: -Sushi: only an avocado roll and a mushroom roll. Both were good but the mushroom roll was better. The sushi rice was probably the softest I've ever had, too. -Wasabi pork shu mai: I'm not a big spicy food eater and I thought this was just okay, although it's the wasabi dipping sauce that makes it spicy. -Roasted garlic mushroom soup: pretty delicious, it legit tasted like a stuffed mushroom but in soup form. -Tonkatsu (my dish) - came with a ginger salad, rice, and the dipping sauce, and was very good. -Spicy udon noodles with beef (his dish) - a bit too spicy for me but not super spicy overall, maybe a mild+ spice. -Smoked pear margarita (him) - was good but I'm not a big fan of smoked things. Would definitely love to come back here again, the food was great and the ambiance was charming. Only complaint is that their bathroom is a onesie and didn't really fit the ambiance, it was kind of old and in need of an upgrade. read more
