it's pretty easy to see why kate has all five star reviews. She is so good at her job! She's very responsive and as soon as you walk into the studio, you will feel comfortable. Easy to find, plenty of parking. Studio is small but does not feel cramped, in fact it's warm and cozy and smells really nice. I had derma planing done and you could just feel that she knows exactly what she's doing. I also had a lash lift and tint for the first time ever and I'm already addicted. Yikes. So, I texted Surya to inquire about brows and a possible facial, made an appt for Wednesday at 5:50P, which I was extremely grateful for as I have a pretty hectic schedule (work/travel/etc.) I am new to the area but was stoked to find a skin care/brow spot in my neighborhood of magnolia. I ended up getting a little lost on the way to my appt. And texted twice- once for the address and another to let her know I'd be a few minutes late. I should have known when I never received further contact that something was amiss. When I showed up, the spa was attached to a home, but was fairly decent looking from the outside. When I stepped in to the little lobby-type area, the room to where the services are performed was closed. I could hear two women, so I proceeded to take a seat, as the sign on the door said she was with a client. I waited for some time, before a woman popped her head from the room and in a very condescending and rude- like way, asked me what was I doing there and if I even had an appointment. I explained that yes, I did and she acted oblivious, then said she didn't have anything written down and was busy. I said that was fine, NBD, explained to her the text said Wednesday, but I only received a blank stare back from her. She then asked if I wanted to come back in the morning or later that evening, to which I explained that unfortunately I could not. (As I previously explained initially over text, that I have a tight schedule). She said sorry, that she was with someone in the back and mentioned something about a new calendar she has. I told her it was fine, but asked if I could chill in her little lobby until my ride could swoop back around (it's Seattle after all- gotta be careful). She said ...yesss... but proceeded to slam the door shut and lock it behind her? When she went back in, I could clearly hear her and her friend /'client' gossiping for the rest of the time (maybe 10mins). It was weird how much she was going out of her way to please the women in the room back there. She even told her friend about her new calendar and how she hasn't messed up yet... Ummm.. sorry, but I would consider this a 'mess up'! Unfortunately, I didn't receive any services so I can't comment on those, however as a fellow professional, I can say that the way she manages her business is poor. I am guessing that most of the 5 star reviews are from her 'clients' or just friends that come in to gossip and put their needs ahead of her business'. The whole thing was bizarre. I have been to many spas on both coasts and none have been this podunk. Additionally, she did text me an hour or so later apologizing and asking me to come back that same night! I don't know anyone that can just drop their entire nights plans to accommodate someone who can't run their business. ‍ read more

With the winter now upon us, I wanted to find somewhere to go for a facial. I've been to all types of places in the past: back room of a nail salon, fancy spa, you name it, ranging from atmospheres that are nicely decorated with soft music and aromatherapy to something more like the nurse's room at a high school. I wanted to find someplace that was on the "fancier" end, but didn't cost an arm and a leg, and had someone with a bit more knowledge than a flow chart in a binder, and who didn't spent time upselling me on additional treatments. Surya was just perfect. It's a cute little studio-like space built on as an addition to Kate's house. Kate and her husband are glass blowers, so there are beautiful pieces of art all around the space. She chats with you about your skin and your needs, and customizes your facial based on that information. It's also a flat price. No "Your skin is extra parched. Would you like to add in a bonus extra-special moisturizing treatment?" I bought her white tea cleanser and her shea butter moisturizer. I'll be back in a couple of months. read more

I have been going to Surya Spa for brow shaping and facials for several years. Kate is amazing at treating my skin and the hot stone massage leaves me feeling so relaxed. I love the way my skin feels after and recently tried dermaplaning which is so great for exfoliation. The spa is clean and comforting and Kate plays soothing music. I've been going to Kate for waxing and the occasional eyelash-dye for almost three years now and am a dedicated client for several reasons. 1. The personal touch -- Kate welcomes you into her cute, artsy little home and sets the tone with her gentle, thoughtful, caring manner. She listens to your requests, provides suggestions or asks questions to make sure you're in sync, and then does a great job. (She's a fast puller and will do whatever she can to minimize waxing pain.) She makes some of her own products and is really attuned to what will make each client feel as wonderful as possible (including the hot shoulder/head rest - love it!) (plus you can meet Juicy, the cute chihuahua, if you'd like) 2. Dedication -- Kate's attention to detail hits, and even exceeds, a high standard (mine!). She will make sure every hair is gone, no matter what. As someone who occasionally obsesses over her eyebrows, I appreciate that Kate 'gets' it; she makes them look fabulous and compliment-worthy (really, I know that's odd but it happens) She takes her service seriously, as it is an extension of her very self. 3. Comfort level -- If you're into a big place with a mani/pedi section and all kinds of staff, that's fine but Surya's not that experience. I appreciate that Kate is where it starts and ends; she offers a beverage, she picks the products, she selects great music, and she makes me feel like I'm practically at home. She knows my quirks, and she makes undressing down to bareness no big deal. All that and her prices are reasonable and her schedule is pretty flexible. When I walk into Surya Spa I immediately feel at home - Kate and her spa are so warm and inviting. I have had the luxury of enjoying both waxing and facials with Kate - she is quite gifted at both! A facial with Kate is truly a treat. She makes you feel as though you are the only person in the universe and that pampering you is the most important thing in her day. She uses the most lovely scents and lotions and potions - many of which are her own concoction- to cleanse, massage, and rejuvenate your skin. I am completely hooked on Surya. I've seen Kate for brow waxing and facials and she is top notch. To begin with, the spa is cozy, clean and gorgeous. It's the perfect setup for relaxation and beautification. If you are in Magnolia, it's the exact right location - close by and far enough from the village to get easy parking. If you are not in Magnolia, just zip up the Magnolia bridge, and you're there! Kate makes all of her products so she can tell you exactly what's in them and why they are so good for you! She makes a SPF 30 sunscreen in a stick that is easy to apply and protects perfectly (I use it on my children). I also mentioned to her that I was having problems with my fingers cracking (in the winter) and the next time I saw her she had made up some super potion that erased all the painful cracking. My eyebrows are perfect! I've been going to see Kate for about 8-years, predominately for eye brow wax and facials. She is meticulous with my brows and I regularly get compliments on their shape. She takes special notice of their difference in height and works on each brow individually to achieve symmetry. Her space is relaxing, clean and well-located in Magnolia. I have been going to Kate in her Surya Spa for about 2 1/2 years now. I've seen her for waxing and facials. She is a wonderful and warm woman and always makes me feel at ease. Her spa is a lovely retreat: luxurious, quiet and cozy. (It used to be in her cute house, but it got upgraded to a fully converted garage.) The massage she does along with her facials always manages to put me into an easy meditative state. And my skin glows when I leave. To top it off, all if the delicious creams and ointments she uses are made by her, right there in her little spa. They are light and smell amazing and they are completely organic. I have been going to Kate at Surya Spa since 2009 for various waxing services (specifically legs, eyebrows, facial hair, and arms). Kate is really fantastic and I highly recommend her! She is incredibly kind and personable and always makes you feel comfortable and relaxed - which is a plus when you are going in for the not so pleasant experience of a wax! She has a very quaint and peaceful spa which she keeps immaculate. And every time I walk in, it smells heavenly - I feel super relaxed immediately as I walk in the door for my appointments.
