Best deals on poke I've ever seen! Sometimes when I go, the fish is really fresh! I can't believe how much fish you get! The bowl pictured here is about $12. I wish I lived closer so I could go more often.

When my intended lunch spot post bike ride Takahashi Market happened to be closed unexpectedly that day, I stumbled upon Suruki Supermarket. It is a Japanese convenient food lover's paradise as they have onigirazu, croquettes, bento boxes, raw and cooked rolls, bowls, and I got them all. I am always hesitant about getting onigiri outside of Japan as they usually have the smallest amount of filling. So, I opted for the onigirazu and each bite was teeming with salmon. Although the croquette is not as cheap as a Lawson's but 2 for $4.50 is a great price since it's filling. Rolls of negihama and caterpillar for under $10 each and a spicy tuna bowl was perfect to refuel for two after biking Canada Road.

Suruki supermarket comes in handy in a pinch in downtown San Mateo. If you need to pick up a quick snack or lunch, they have fresh sushi, hot food, fresh fish, and popular Japanese snacks. The packaged sushi here is pretty good and tastes fresh. I got a 6-piece California roll for $6. Love grabbing some packages snacks after a meal in downtown too since it's conveniently walkable from b street

Yummy fresh sushi and chirashi bowl! Only $16 (if I'm not wrong) per bowl and you have this beautiful meal for lunch.

Love coming here for their sashimi platters! You can tell them a budget and they can curate something for you or you can just specify exactly what you want! Their seafood is always fresh and it has become a staple for me and my partner to buy fresh fish from. The market has a great selection of premade bentos and other individual meals. They also have a wide selection of Japanese grocery items that I frequent here for. You can also stop by at night before they close (not sure what time) and the sushi items are discounted too!

One of my favorite fish markets in the Bay Area! They have some of the freshest sashimi and is a great spot for party platters. We got the assorted sashimi platter for our super bowl party and it was a hit! The tray was entirely lined with beautifully cut fish that was so fresh and sweet and it all disappeared in minutes. In addition to the sashimi, I also frequent this market a lot for their discounted prepared goods. Everyday after 4pm all their bento boxes, sushi rolls, and other prepared foods are listed at 50% off! It's an insanely good deal, but be warned; people start lining up EARLY!

We get our sashimi platters from Suruki and the sashimi is always super fresh! I like pre-ordering online and picking it up. Browsing the aisles is pretty fun since they have a lot of different items. Need to try more from here!

Been coming here for probably close to 20 years plus & supporting this local family owned gem.. It's family owned and all the members I have met have all been so nice. To me, It's also special to see the son even has his late father's picture up at the fish counter still. I believe he might have been the og that started the family business. The fish market in the back ALWAYS has fresh sashimi / poke' grade fish. I only get my fish to make poke here!!! They will slice it sashimi style for you or do your poke cuts as well. I like to just get the chunk and cut it myself however. They also give you wasabi, have sushi rice hot and for sale as well. Pro tip: if it's warm out you can ask for a little bag of ice to keep your fish cold till it gets home. Love that. It's came in handy for me a few times, and knowing my fish is staying fresh gives me peace of mind. Aside from the fish the whole market has all types of goodies. From things you can cook yourself (ramen broths and hot pot broths ready to be cooked up and add your own fixings, noodles, produce ect. They also have pre made bento box items, musubis of different varieties, salad, poke, sashimi all to go. At the end of the day, ( I believe 4 ish) people start lining up to go for the half off prepared food rush. Great idea and good deals, if you get there in line but if you're at the end it gets wiped out pretty quick. Weekends can sometimes be a little crazy, but the lines always move swiftly.

We had suruki two days in a row. The first time we had karage and a huge platter of hamachi sashimi. The sashimi was very top tier quality and worth the food. Today, we got two bowls beef bowls, teas and a salmon hand roll. Delicious food for a quick and convenient grab.

First time at Suruki Supermarket for the sushi. After 4 pm the hot items and sushi is half off. But get there early as people start lining up before 3. As far as the fish it is fresh and good quality. Definitely take a peak inside to see what is left cause once you get in there it is chaos with people grabbing everything. The store itself is clean and bright. The checkout line was quick and easy. In and out in about 10 minutes total. Street parking only.

I think people forget the small mom and pop style stores in the US and honestly there's a lot of reason for that but Suruki really stands above the rest simply with their selection of hot bentos, sashimi, nigiri, and chirashi bowls Plus, I'm gonna let the cat out the bag, they have 50% off these premade foods at 4 PM (unsure if every day) but I heard from a local and I was lucky enough to snag a simple chicken teriyaki bowl months ago and have been hooked since But fret not, the bowls aren't the only highlight, their sashimi and nigiri is actually worldly, easily compares to quality Japanese restaurants in the Bay, LA, and yes even NYC for a fraction of the cost. They're worth the regular price but who doesn't love it when it's half off and they provide chopsticks and soy sauce too when you pay To put into perspective, their chirashi bowls had the rice grains each individually cooked without any grains breaking. Those that care about sushi will know how important the quality of the rice is, but to make it more insane it's also properly seasoned with vinegar. Yes, the same ones you'd see at quality sushi places I won't lie that I often will try my best to time my arrival to get their discounts but even without this place already exceeds my expectations with the quality and affordability of their foods. I find it better supporting smaller business knowing how much they care about the customer's experience If you cared, the line you'd see around 3:30 is because of these deals. They also have a smart system where the food section is roped off and there's an attendant at both the entrance and exit so nobody can game the system. It's such a small but highly appreciated aspect of their excellence in customer satisfaction. Let's be honest, we all know or have witnessed people who will game the system especially in Western cultures so seeing this is a nice safeguard to those bad actors making it more essential to come early if you want to get those deals Furthermore, the selection is limited by what they don't sell before the area gets roped off (unsure about time) but it makes sense they'd want to sell at full price and encourage to get it even outside these discounted times because it's reasonably priced and high quality

Fantastic selection of ready-to-eat food! Would highly recommend this market to anyone looking for a tasty grab-and-go lunch. The market was buzzing with people around noon on a Saturday, with everyone grabbing premade bento boxes, fresh sashimi, and onigiri for lunch. They had everything from hayashi omurice to yakisoba, and more varieties of sushi than I could count. I would highly recommend coming early in the day as I can easily see them selling out by mid-afternoon. Everything looked incredibly fresh, appetizing, and was very reasonably priced. Most dishes ranged from $4-$16. My friend and I grabbed a beef teriyaki bowl ($11) salmon ikura bowl ($14), mixed maki set ($6.5), and seaweed salad ($3). The beef teriyaki was easily one of the best I've EVER had! The flavor of the sauce was deep and savory without being too salty, and the meat itself was deliciously tender and the perfect amount of fatty. The market employees were welcoming and kind. All in all, I live in San Francisco and would 100% go out of my way to drive to San Mateo to grab food from here again!

Only talking about my 50% off 4PM experience!! Happened to be in the area around 3:30 on a Sunday and remembered that Suruki supermarket does 50% off at 4pm. I was around the 10th group in line at 3:30 and the line got super long after that. They started to let people in a bit before 4 and I was the last person to be let in in the first round!!! It's war in there!!!!! There's only a small section for the 50% off (left fridge area and some bentos/ready to eat food on the shelf on the right) so it's hard to get in there if people are crowding. Was only able to snag a salmon bento, tuna/salmon sashimi, and fatty tuna sashimi. The rolls looked good but those were taken real quick. I would say you have to come at least 3:30 or earlier to get anything decent since they don't limit people on how much they can buy. Maybe a weekday would be easier! The quality is definitely very good and with the 50% off, it's a steal!!! Will definitely be coming back if I'm in San Mateo around that time (:

Ask the Community - Suruki Supermarket

How early can we place online sashimi orders for New Year's Day? (Pick up on 12/31)

You can order now at https://suruki-holiday.square.site if you want to pick up on New Year's Eve.

How much does the sea urchin/uni cost?

I've seen small tray of regular uni for about $9, small tray of Santa Barbara for around $30, & large tray of Hokkaido for around $100

For the half price off items starting at 4pm, does the line start inside or outside? This is my first time trying it so I don't want to line up in the wrong spot. Thank you.

The line starts outside on the sidewalk. I have seen people line up as early as 3:30pm (sometimes even earlier) - and it gets long! The line inside to check-out also gets long but it moves very quickly.

Do they accept EBT?

It doesn't look like they do. It's not highlighted on locator map (same with Nijiya). Here's the link so you can see: https://www.ebt.ca.gov/locator/index.html#/locator.page

How is Parking?

Parking can be tough but I usually find a spot within five minutes or less.

Google map says they are closed from Mon-Thurs currently?

Just this week only 8/2-8/5.

Dinner for 4 adults. How many pounds of sashimi of each will we need of salmon, tuna, hamachi?

If all of you are planning just to eat sashimi, I'd go 0.5-0.6 lbs. each. However, if with rice, salad or with other dishes, 0.33 lbs. each.

We tried to stop by today (around 10:30 AM on a Wednesday) but didn't realize there was going to be a 30 min line to get in and didn't have time to wait. Are there times of the day/week when the line is shorter? Otherwise we will plan accordingly. :)

It really depends I've waited and then I have not. Today I arrived ~3:00 and there was no line. Best to always assume there will be a line.

How is social distancing practiced during the end of day half-off sushi/sashimi sale?

It's the same as during the day such as limiting how many people can come in at a time.

What hours open?

10a-5pm every day.

Do they still sell sashimi now?

Yes! You can preorder or grab what's been made for the day.

Are they opened back up? Open Sundays?

Yes they are open. I don't know about Sunday

All other supermarkets, except for maybe Fresco in South Bay and Berkeley Bowl in East Bay, have a niche, and you're going to be inconvenienced if what you want to make is outside of that focus. This large market had a dedicated aisle to Latino products, one for Japanese, Central/Eastern European, Southeast Asian - mostly for Filipino and Indonesian products, an aisle EACH! Now, as you may know, Hashi has taken over the market following the retirement of the previous boss under Marina. Apparently the kids don't want to take over haiyaaaa. Not much has changed but necessary renovations are planned, though unfortunately, the European section was down to some canned drinks and Slavic sauerkraut during my recent visit. Other reviews have mentioned how cold it gets inside. During my visit, it was all right, about as same temperature as outside. They don't have a heating system, I guess. Now I understand that Hashi has a focus on Japanese products, but given the physical size and history of this market location, I do wish that its Japanese branding doesn't come at the expense of everything else, especially since there are major competition nearby and we don't need a rat race to the bottom.

Not too familiar with the area, we were unaware of the ownership change. Crabs at $7.99/lb. seem like a reasonable price, vegetables looked fresh. Meats and seafood are priced a little lower than other Asian markets. I was excited to find some sesame candy which reminded me of childhood snack, however there is no expiration date on the good looking box ($4.99). The food court area is being remodeled, we walked around it carefully. The crabs we steamed last night for dinner were pretty good. Today I tried the sesame candy and was very disappointed. As soon as I opened the nicely wrapped candy, the aroma of rancid sesame oil hit me and it tasted bitter.....basically the candy is inedible. I understand it may not be the fault of the market because this item was imported. The lack of expiration date should have given me a warning, my fault. Needless to say we will not be rushing back to shop here anytime soon, hopefully they do a better job on quality control going forward.
