This market may not be your #1, but it gets my respect…read more You see. I haven't been to a large supermarket on the Peninsula that's as well stocked as this place. Not even its siblings. All other supermarkets, except for maybe Fresco in South Bay and Berkeley Bowl in East Bay, have a niche, and you're going to be inconvenienced if what you want to make is outside of that focus. This large market had a dedicated aisle to Latino products, one for Japanese, Central/Eastern European, Southeast Asian - mostly for Filipino and Indonesian products, an aisle EACH! Now, as you may know, Hashi has taken over the market following the retirement of the previous boss under Marina. Apparently the kids don't want to take over haiyaaaa. Not much has changed but necessary renovations are planned, though unfortunately, the European section was down to some canned drinks and Slavic sauerkraut during my recent visit. Other reviews have mentioned how cold it gets inside. During my visit, it was all right, about as same temperature as outside. They don't have a heating system, I guess. Now I understand that Hashi has a focus on Japanese products, but given the physical size and history of this market location, I do wish that its Japanese branding doesn't come at the expense of everything else, especially since there are major competition nearby and we don't need a rat race to the bottom.

Not too familiar with the area, we were unaware of the ownership change. Crabs at $7.99/lb. seem like a reasonable price, vegetables looked fresh. Meats and seafood are priced a little lower than other Asian markets. I was excited to find some sesame candy which reminded me of childhood snack, however there is no expiration date on the good looking box ($4.99). The food court area is being remodeled, we walked around it carefully. The crabs we steamed last night for dinner were pretty good. Today I tried the sesame candy and was very disappointed. As soon as I opened the nicely wrapped candy, the aroma of rancid sesame oil hit me and it tasted bitter.....basically the candy is inedible. I understand it may not be the fault of the market because this item was imported. The lack of expiration date should have given me a warning, my fault. Needless to say we will not be rushing back to shop here anytime soon, hopefully they do a better job on quality control going forward.

Their sashimi selection is incredibly fresh, beautifully cut, and perfectly packaged to-go. I'm a huge fan of their tuna--especially the otoro, chutoro, and akami--but you honestly can't go wrong with their salmon, uni, or any of their other fresh fish selections. Their hot food section is just as impressive and made fresh daily. Whether it's chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, sushi bowls, nigiri, chicken karaage, or grilled salmon, everything hits the spot and tastes homemade. What really makes this place special is the family behind it. You'll almost always see Ken, Shu, Misako, or their mother Ryuko, and they make the whole experience feel welcoming and authentic. And if you're into whiskey or just a casual drinker, keep an eye out for their selection--they occasionally carry rare bottles like Yamazaki and Hakushu, which are getting harder to find these days. Overall, Suruki is a gem in San Mateo. Quality, freshness, and great people--what more can you ask for?

The establishment is more of a market with a hot food counter on the side. I ended up ordering the beef shawarma gyro plate with falafel, mujadar, and fried eggplant. My order was ready in less than 15 minutes. I felt I did a good job picking the items in my combo. The flavors of each item were really good. I especially enjoyed how the beef was seasoned though it was a bit on the dry side, but the included white sauce definitely helped moisten it up. Each of the sides had great flavors as well. Overall, the portion size and flavors were great for lunch. I probably could've saved half for another meal but ended up eating it all since it was so good. I definitely will come back to try more items on the menu!

The individual taking my order seemed a bit unsure and had some challenges, despite the menu being readily available. There were moments when she needed to ask her colleagues for guidance, which led to a 5-minute wait before my order was placed. It appeared that other customers were having similar experiences. I waited patiently for my order, even as four other customers received their meals ahead of me. After a 25-minute wait, I inquired about my order, which finally arrived. I had ordered chicken and tonkatsu ramen, but received only one set of chopsticks and a spoon. I took the opportunity to speak with the manager regarding my concerns about staff training. I suggested that, should they face challenges with timely order fulfillment, it might be beneficial to pause taking on new orders until they can catch up. The staff seemed to be under significant pressure, which affected the overall atmosphere. While it's understandable that they may be navigating a busy environment, I believe that management could improve the situation. The food itself was satisfactory, but I found the tonkatsu ramen to have an unbalanced ratio of broth to cream, with a bit too much cream for my taste. I hope they can enhance their service to better align with Japanese standards of precision and dedication. I truly appreciate this establishment and look forward to seeing improvements in the future.
