Ownership of the store has changed and definitely not for the better. Merchandise is the same run down items that have been sitting there for months. Service in the meantime is lacking to say the least. The old ownership had staff that were friendly and welcoming. This store has now become a definite pass. Buy the original products from Costco because you aren't saving anything here. read more

I have been going to Surplus Sams for about 8 years now, as we are only a 2 minute drive away. It is always hit and miss at this place. Sometimes if I'm down for a walk at Foreshore park I'll drop into Surplus Sams. Regrettably more miss than hit , they do have a lot of Costco rejects that are sold at half the Costco price. After a Costco customer returns something to Costco it will more than likely be on the shelf here. Buyer beware all the time at this place-the food they sell can be past expiry(even cans of pop). I would stay away from anything that you can't actually test out because they won't refund your money ,just a store credit for more of their damaged goods. Their sales are also confusing and misleading-once they advertised a 5%- 50% sale-you spin this carnival wheel and it tells you what discount you get-the catch-you have to buy everything first and then you find out your discount. There were a lot of disgruntled customers in line that day. A religious family seems to run and own the place,but they aren't very helpful and don't seem very happy to have customers in their store, asking questions about products etc. Today's review is a result of a rather poor customer service experience. They have a few New and USED Costco Sealy Posturepedic mattresses for sale , I phoned and asked what particular type of Sealy Posturepedic-Betty answered and told me to look on the Costco website-I explained I was already on the Costco website and they have at least 5 different types of Sealy Posturepedic for sale.I asked if she could walk over to the mattresses and check the label to find out which one. She refused to do so, because she said she was the only one at the front of the store. I asked if she could ask one of her staff who are in the back sorting out products to check for me?No way. I was kind of angry and told her that this isn't very good customer service. She said that was too bad. I told her I have been a long term customer and always recommended Surplus Sams, but this time they really showed poor service and I wouldn't be recommending their store anymore. The store is like a warehouse (but isn't that large) of odds and ends of goods. Prices were okay, i.e., not a steal but there were some clothing and shoewear bargains upstairs. They do take credit cards for payment. What I didn't appreciate is how one sales lady was shadowing me, trying to rush me to pay/leave the store even though there was 10+ more minutes before closing time that Saturday. Surplus Sam's gets Costco damaged packages, returns, overages, damaged goods and other liquidation type items. The prices for clothes are half price what they were sold for at Costco, so a great deal. Watch expiry dates on the food--most of the time items are good for a year or more but occasionally things are past their due date. Also consider before you buy; a dented box of cereal is likely fine--but a seriously dented box of crackers is likely a box of crumbs. Merchandise is constantly changing; some visits I find tons of deals. Other times I can't find a thing. I have found items ranging from duvet covers to granola bars to a tiara. Remember that it's a discount store, so make sure your item is what you want and is in good working shape because you get a store credit not a refund if you return an item. read more

Good for bargain hunters on a budget, the stock is always changing and you never know what you might find. One other time It surprised me with the prices it has, today I bought the spare parts for the Phillips sonicare from surplus sam, which in other stores I usually pay almost 40 $ for two pieces, but in surplus sam I can't believe for 8 pieces I only paid 35 $, run to him who have excellent products at very low prices read more

Be very cautious when purchasing from this place!!! I purchased a "new" electric fireplace at Surplus Sams or should I say Surplus Scams. They told me the unit had been tested and was in perfect working condition, the box was sealed up and looked clean. I got the unit home and opened it up. Discovery number one the fire log was broken into two pieces and in unusable condition, discovery number two the power cord was cut into two pieces. I decided since I got a good deal I would repair the cord and use it anyway. After the repair the unit turned on and started making a loud knocking noise, which was a ruined motor in the device. I bring it back and Surplus Scams will not give me my cash back. Even though the product was clearly not in new or working condition they told me store credit only. So now I am stuck with a $150 credit to a place that lied to me about product testing and has a warehouse full of expired and returned Cosco merchandise... Great! I suppose this is my fault I should have made them assemble the device in the store to be sure it worked first. Don't trust them be sure it works perfectly before you purchase!!! Be sure to read the yelps not recommended reviews also as they are all negative... Wish I saw those before I purchased from Surplus Scam. read more

we are a charity and we have bought many items from this store. only a few items were of a reasonable quality; the rest was either damaged or in case of food simply expired. when we contacted the store, they refused to refund us the money even though we explained that this is the charity money and that they are taking from the poor families by doing this. all they offered was to exchange the goods citing their policies. i think something must be wrong with them if they refuse the right of people especially the unfortunate members of the society to enjoy a quality product. all they could do is to offer low quality product in exchange for the unwanted goods. to summarize this, the store sells cheap items and the bargains are good indeed but you have no way of getting your money back. surplus sam's left us very unsatisfied customers. beware and check all you buy. (this is our honest opinion but i doubt they will keep it posted and they delete this message as they have done in the past with other people's negative comments. the store asked their friends to post the 4 and 5 star comment to boost their business. shame). read more
