Stopped by as I was passing through this town on my way south. Ordered a few fried items: zucchini, onion rings, and chicken basket with fries to hold us over. Boy did I regret it. The food arrived and it was oily, burned, and too spicy. Had to pick up with the napkin to offset the oil dripping off. It did soak up the food's oil but wasn't enough. The batter fell off the chicken and zucchini. Couldn't eat any of it. Maybe it was just a bad day for the place. Sorry to say but won't be back. read more

The Animal burger and chili with garlic fries was awesome! Tried the bleu bacon special with onion rings last night. The burgers here are delicious made with fresh lettuce tomato and cheeses although you are not asked what temp you want it cooked to. The fries are hand cut and soaked in cold water to make a crispy fry but they are extremely greasy (fryer temp?) and over salted. The onion rings were also too greasy. The service is fast and friendly. The decor leaves little to be desired. They must not have a fly fan as the dining area is full of them and the hanging fly strips and dirty tabletops add to the ambience. This place can be amazing. New girl on the register was not properly trained, burger came out fast and undercooked, patty seemed to be lesser quality, undercooked, fatty bacon, and prices went up for lesser a quality meal. I've never written a review, but feel Surfside still has time to correct their mistakes. Was passing through town looking for a burger restaurant and found Burger Shack. Had one of the absolutely best 1/2 lb burgers ever! Juicy, fresh lettuce, lotsa mayo, ketchup, onions. Perfectly seasoned & cooked. Great fries and very large serving of them. I travel quite a bit and more often than not, most road meals are a disappointment and a waste of time & money. I was blown away by the burgers at this place! I am an avid In-N-Out fan and usually don't have much to say about the poor quality beef monsters sold at most places touting they have the "best". The beef is the secret! I'm no crazy carnivore, but I do appreciate quality meat. I really believe that the flavor of the grass fed beef is incredible. I got the Jr. cheeseburger combo on my first visit and was pleasantly surprised to find that the 1/3 pound "junior" was more than enough to fill me up and it came with a HEAP of fresh french fries. Arguably the best hamburger in all of Humboldt County. Great service and great selection and great vibe. Really love Amanda and Dan who really take pride in their product. The western bacon burger is delish, though the BBQ sauce is a bit tangy for my taste, and their fries are my favorite. However, minus 2 stars for a not very clean feeling restaurant environment and for the line cook having a beard but not wearing a hair net. Love the antique pictures on the wall; I'm a classical musician and don't enjoy upbeat rock/surf music, but it is in line with the mood they're trying to set. I need to eat gluten free food and thank God they have gf buns. Ramon's ran out for a week and I was quite upset. Who wants to eat a burger without a bun? NO ONE! Was craving a burger but I am a burger snob! Been here 3 years and kept wanting to try this place and last night finally did. My only regret was not trying it sooner! Ate half for dinner and half for lunch cuz we ordered sooooo much to try! Burgers perfectly made and no soggy bun-that's hard to do with to go food but they nailed it!! Chili cheese fries didn't disappoint, onion rings were the bomb! And I got fried pickles, my hubby never had them and now that he has he ate more then I had planned so I wished I ordered more! We will now be regulars there! Oh and while I waited for ordered cuz I got there a little early I ordered a chocolate shake-mmmmmmm. One suggestion get some malt mix powdered for us malted milkshake ppl cuz that is delicious too! Recently had lunch with a girlfriend at Surfside because I wanted to see the changes since the new ownership. It had been awhile. The space looks far more inviting and less cluttered than before. Plenty of tables to sit inside and a couple outside if you feel the urge to people watch. Our order was taken quickly and efficiently. I had the Bleu Burger Combo which includes fries and a drink. I added garlic to my fries which may have been $2.00 more. The burger was super good and I ate every bite. Fries were crispy and delicious however the garlic--meh. Little pile of it on top of crispy fries was hard to keep on a bite and it just was lacking. I'd just save the money and skip that part. My friend ordered a burger that also disappeared. We got our food fairly quickly-under 10 minutes. It was before noon so no idea how it would be later during the rush. As we left, the employees said "good-bye" and "thank you" which is always a nice thing to do. Customers like to be acknowledged, I believe. I shouldn't eat burgers because I love them but my body says "noooooo" but I will go again when I'm feeling rebellious (or need a little stress eating). read more
