Decided to try the roadside burger joint. Good food and service. Kinda noisy because it's literally on the side of the road and some "less fortunate" folks hanging around. Got a call from our bank when we were gassing up at Elk Valley casino 40mi north. My wife left her backpack with wallet and everything in it under one of the picnic tables. The employees found it and called the bank which was how we found out she left it. We drove back to retrieve it and everything was in it, cash , cards and all. We wanted to have a decent meal before we hiked the Trillium Falls Trail, and this was the only restaurant in Orick. Holy moly! This shack was atrocious from food to service to ambiance! Food: Bland! Bland! Bland! I had a cheeseburger with mushrooms, which was as boring as eating cardboard! I'm all about using less salt, but damn, were you out of salt and pepper?!??? My man's burger had half a lettuce and a piece of pineapple from a can. My daughter had a hot dog that she mostly ate, so maybe it wasn't that bad. But everything was so greasy. It felt as if we had downed a bottle of cooking oil. We felt kinda crappy afterward. Service: I don't know if the lady didn't like the way we looked or what, but she had a sour face when we picked up our tray and when we asked for napkins. Maybe she's stuck in the 1920s and not used to mixed couples. Or maybe she's upset that tweakers are hanging out at her shack. Ambiance: All the seats were outside and no umbrellas to block the sun. OMG. There were two benches in the shade, but these two ladies took them with chocolate-covered strawberries on the table. Ummm wouldn't the chocolate melt?? They just left them on the table in the heat. Ew. Then, there was a homeless guy with a machete walking around talking to himself. We were about to sit at the shaded table, but he just stood there waiting for food. Or was he just hanging out? There were other homeless or ragged-looking men strolling around. It was scary and uncomfortable to eat. I mean, what's he gonna do with that machete??? But, hey, at least we got out of there alive and unscathed. To be honest, if this wasn't the only place to eat AND the only place where we could try elk, my rating would be way lower haha We saw it on the way and decided to stop in to try the elk burger. The cheese was not melted and the buns were not toasted. We got it Praire Creek style and the one with mushrooms and grilled onions. The elk was super tasty and juicy though. I personally really enjoyed it but it's honestly because it was elk. If you come here and they are out of elk, I'd not recommend to wait or try other things (we waited about ~20 minutes) The lady was not friendly or happy. She gave me a slight attitude when I asked for napkins but personally it didn't bother me that much I personally loved the atmosphere with the yellow benches and the umbrella and the adorable plants outside. I have always wanted to try this place since it is on the way to Crescent City and they have elk burgers. I ordered the 8 spot elk burger which comes with cheese, bacon, tomato, onion, and lettuce. I ordered mine with pepperjack cheese. I also got a side of shredded cheese fries (I wanted nacho cheese. My boyfriend really wanted the shredded cheese so I went with it.) I also got a peanut butter shake. The elk burger was bigger than I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be a small patty based on the size options they had. It was a decent size. The bun was untoasted and would have been better if toasted. The burger doesn't come with condiments. They have packets for you to add as much or as little as you like. The elk patty was juicy and flavored well. The burger was a little expensive but worth trying. This burger doesnt not come with fries. The side order of fries is huge. My boyfriend and I shared a basket and we didn't finish it. The fries were super crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Loved them. What I didn't love was the shredded cheese. They throw them on top while the fries are piping hot and the cheese melts a little. Some parts were a little more melted than others. The cheese was kind of gross like that. Definitely will not be getting shredded cheese again. Will try nacho next time, but honestly the fries are great without cheese. They offer milk shakes here with a few different flavors. They let you choose to put peanut butter in chocolate or vanilla. I went with the vanilla and omg it was so good. Strong but not over powering. Such a good milkshake. My biggest fear with small shack like places is that the food will be greasy and super salty. Not the case here. I will definitely be coming back again. And just a note. This place is located in Orick and is not that close to Patrick's point so I don't know what one of the other reviews is talking about. read more

The name is appropriate because this is a shack along the road with picnic tables for seating. We were heading to the National Park and wanted lunch before. I got the elk burger with onion rings and my husband had the fresh fried fish basket with fries (tater tots and onion rings are also available in the baskets) and a chocolate shake. All of the food was really good. It did take quite awhile to get our food so it isn't a quick place to grab a bite. Fries $4: Nicely brown, but strangely despite being freshly friend and hot, they were still soft and mushy? I don't get it. Also had a slightly burnt taste--very very very old oil maybe? Also under seasoned. 2/10 The irony... if they cooked the burgers less, not only would they be more edible, the wait time would probably be shorter too. The only place to eat in this little town, it has a fairly robust menu for such a little place. The elk burger is a novelty and worth trying The portions are plenty and the service can be good. It is not fast food, so be prepared for a bit of a wait. This is a small business owned by a family that lives in the area. I like to support local business. read more

We stopped by a local convenience store and asked a lady in the parking lot were a good place to eat was at and she recommended this spot. They had a good variety of food on their menu. All the items on their menu are named after hikes, bigfoot, or trees. My mother and I tried the Humboldt Wrap which included either fried or grilled chicken in a tortilla with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and ranch or honey mustard. I was expecting a small wrap but it was huge and so good! I enjoyed it so much. My brother and Dad both got the prairie creek burger and they're burger was huge as well. They're portions are huge so come hungry. Yes it did take them about 30 minutes to make the food, but it's definitely worth the wait. It's fresh food made as you order so don't expect to be given your meal quick, if you want that go to a fast food place. We were staying just down the road and I sent my husband to grab some fries, a Peanut Butter malt and some scoops of ice cream. They only had 2 shake/malt flavors. Chocolate and vanilla. We got chocolate and it was honestly pretty disgusting. The fries were unsalted, and tasted/felt like they had been sitting out for an hour. They didn't seem equipped to handle anyone not sitting down right outside of their establishment to eat. They handed my husband the scoops of ice cream in fry baskets, and the basket of fries. With an honest toasted bun, big and real bread (not fluff!), thick slices of yellow onion for tartness, real juicy slices of tomatoes, hunks of iceberg lettuce: like you would make at home. The price was there: $10 a piece but so worth the experience!! The burger does not taste too much like wild meat, rather it had a nice tang and mine was perfectly cooked. Maybe it's because we were hungry but we are pretty sure it's because they use grass fed beef for their patties - And they were wayy better than any burger I've ever had. And we are from LA. The place is located on the side of the 1. It's kinda easy to miss but don't let its facade turn you away. They accept cash and cards (which is great for us cashless carrying folks). As we were munching away at our burgers a family stopped by and saw how "small and open" the place was and just left. I have realized that just because a place doesn't have the amenities of a full restaurant doesn't mean it's bad food. Sometimes it's the little whole in the walls that make places more memorable. On our family vacation I had researched places to eat along the way... The reviews are either 5 stars or 1 star here at the snack shack. The appearance as you first walk up is dirty which could be partly from being right off the road but the place could use a deep clean and some paint on the outside and also a good scrub and clean on the inside.. I'm a little curious when the last time the snack shack has been inspected by the health department, it is cluttered and does not look clean inside. The burgers did take about 20 minutes to come out which I don't mind but I think if the grill was turned up the burgers would cook faster and wouldn't be so dry and over cooked. The deep fry oil on the fries tasted old and the chilly fries were a giant pile of greasy fries under a ton of chilly and I unfortunately couldn't eat them. I hope the snack shack can take some of these negative reviews and use them to better the food and service. I personally didn't have a problem with the owner/cooks service or attitude but she definitely didn't go out of her way to be friendly and I could feel she has lost her joy for serving people good food if she ever has had a love for it... if you don't love what you do find a new profession! The individual taking orders could be described the same way and had her boobs hanging out so far we were all allowed to see the kissy lips tattoo on her left boob. The onion rings tasted of beer and oil, no salt, fries were frozen prepackaged but again no salt. The cheese on the burger, as you can see in someone else's posted picture, does not come melted onto the burger. It also does not melt as you eat it. The Elk burger and the beef burger both come without salt or pepper or condiments. It's just amazing that a business can run like this.
