Stopped by for a late lunch recently, the place is small with walk up counter service and the menu boards overhead. Along with specials. There was no one up front when I came in and it took a few minutes but once someone came it moved pretty smoothly. I placed my order, the Jerk Chicken medium with mac n cheese and steamed veggies. Food is on point, the Jerk Chicken nice and flavorful with enough spice to let you know but not over the top, the mac n cheese was okay, nothing special and the steamed veggies were very good, great seasoning and flavor not overcooked and just delicious. Very friendly service. I had a large Ital Stew, but substituted a citrus (lime?) jalapeno slaw for the rice. I liked the slaw (very fresh ingredients), but really liked the rice (my husband also got the Ital Stew, but didn't make any changes, so his came with the coconut rice, which I liberally "tasted"). I loved the Stew. I loved the sauteed veggies. So so so good! My husband, on the other hand, loved the Stew, the sauteed veggies, and the rice. So he wins. But he was initially disappointed, because he'd come in wanting the Brown Stew Tofu. They didn't have that (or a couple of other items), and apparently rarely make it anymore. After eating the Ital Stew, he was glad they were out, since it's doubtful the Brown Stew could've been as good (few things are!). Great food! Update: Had another delicious and filling meal here today. Great customer service again from the friendly, helpful woman at the counter. Shared a Jackfruit and Vegetarian Jamaican Patty. They were both delicious, but I found the Jackfruit the more interesting and appealing to me -- it was curry-flavored, as opposed to the Vegetarian which reminded me of a pot pie filling. I also had the Goat Curry, which I liked quite a bit (the goat meat was soft and flavorful). My husband had the Spicy Jerk Plantain tacos, which he thought were really great (he did say, though spicy, it didn't remind him of Jerk flavor, but he wasn't sure as it has been a long time since his last Jerk meal). The jerk chicken and curry chicken were so flavorful. Loved it! As for the sides, they all lacked salt. The Mac n cheese was really bland. Once we salted everything they were alright. I definitely liked the coconut rice more than the rice and peas. The veggies and plantains were good. I would not get the mac n cheese again. The dumplings were different. I didn't like them l but I also didn't dislike them. They seem like something you'd have to grow up on to enjoy. The service was great. Super good vibes and people ! Just awful! The place is simple cafe style which didn't detract from the experience. The owner started out nice talking with us friendly, it went very south after that. First thing: they advertise many dishes on their printed menu on the wall and the chalkboard yet many are not available. 2. Price changed after we ordered the excuse was they didn't have time to change the pricing on menu. We made our mind up based on pricing yet was 4.00 extra dollars without telling us until he rung it up. 28.00 for four tacos. ‍ 3. For 28.00 the tacos should have been incredible stuffed the the gills with freshly made chicken and plantains. And all the veggies. NOPE not in the least. 4. After 15 minutes of sitting and waiting on the four tacos a La cart, the nice gal came over and said it'll be awhile because they don't have cilantro sauce and they have to make it. it was 6pm. Ok 15 minutes later ( 30 minutes later), we receive four tacos 1/4 the way filled. A THIN slice of COLD PLANTAIN. And COLD chicken. Three shreds of cabbage, and 1 slice of avocado on stale tortilla and no sauce DRY. When i asked for Jerk sauce she said sorry we Don't have anymore. It was 6pm dinner hour on Thursday. ‍ We never can afford to go out but we saw the 4.7 stars and said let's do it. It was below below sub par inedible. We threw it Away, starving. And 28.00 poorer. I'm a pretty adventurous eater and was just lamenting about how quesabirria tacos don't use goat. "Well, Jake, people don't eat goat anymore." We had a delicious lunch at The Jerk Kitchen! The jerk chicken tacos were amazing, with smoky, mouth-watering meat, yummy salty cheese and lots of crunchy veggies. I tried the daily special that wasn't on the usual menu: cooked greens, big chewy dumplings on the side, plantains, and big pieces of root vegetables. It was different than anything I've ever had before and very tasty. The people there were really nice, and the colorful atmosphere & good Jamacian music made our meal even better. Let me preface this review by stating that I have very little spice tolerance. As in, bell peppers register on my spice scale. Yes, I'm embarrassed. Anyway, I got the jerk chicken plate for takeout and was super impressed! I found the chicken to have a decent spice level, but enjoyed every bite. Super moist, good smoked taste, and really flavorful - I loved that it wasn't just hot with no flavor. The mac and cheese tasted like it was made with love - I'm going to see if I can order an extra side of it next time. The veggies and rice were a nice addition. Just enough flavor that they were pleasant sides, but not so much that they took the attention away from the chicken. Yummy fried plantain also! I enjoyed the barbecue sauce, but didn't end up using much of it, because the jerk chicken didn't need it. The owners clearly put a lot of effort into fixing/cleaning the space up post-Rita's. We visit Humboldt from the Bay Area and we always stop here while we're in the area. The food is amazing- great spice and flavor. Definitely don't come here expecting blandness! The folks who work here are also always kind, the music and vibe is good, and there are great Jamaican sodas and treats you can buy too. Great spot! read more
