We had a super fun time here on a Friday evening - happy hour runs until 8pm and the drinks were awesome (and affordable!). We went upstairs where the DJ was and it took a while for any dancing to really get going, but once it did, it was a good crowd. Mix of hip hop and techno (we sat out for the techno). Would have loved more 90s/2000s rap. Seemed like the crowd felt the same about the techno (blah) - just play the "classics" and people will dance! Whoever the manager is on MLK day was a complete condescending and rude individual. I would not like someone like him representing my restaurant!!! 2pm: we saw the large screen on and checked in to see if they would be showing the Eagles vs Bucs playoff game with sound. Given they are usually closed Monday and Tuesday we wanted to make sure this would be the spot to watch the game. We were assured they would be showing the game with sound by the day time bartender. 8pm: Came back for the game. Maybe 20 people in the bar. Sweetest and nicest female bartender- looks like a Barbie doll- asks the manager twice to put the game and sound on. Manager tells her to tell us wait a bit until the place clears out. We wait for the first quarter... mind you half the patrons in the bar are watching the game and the rest don't give AF what's happening. We ask the manager directly for sound on the game and explain we asked earlier and were told they would have the game and sound on. Manager tells us "oh you made the mistake thinking you were In charge" and "oh so you're gonna give me an ultimatum"? No- we just politely explained why we had the expectation we could have sound and the game given our interaction with the bartender earlier in the day and because we just left Brix sports bar around the corner who had way more TV's and sound. So Why would we stay somewhere that isn't a true sport bar catering to sports fans during the NFL playoff if that truly wasn't their intention. I even asked if we could ask the other patrons if they minded if we had the sound on- he responded "they are here for MLK day" not NFL. Hello- it's a Monday night in January! And a holiday! Ain't nobody trying to be at the club! We want to watch Football! Playoff Football!! Only place In Town with a theatre screen but doesn't cater the sports patrons. SMH! No wonder why Brix is packed and y'all barely got 20 people... If you're the owner of Surfers- it really doesn't hurt to be pleasant to your holiday patrons and oblige their simple request of sound for an NFL playoff game. If it's not something y'all do, no biggie, but clearly it's been done given the response by your bartenders. Won't be back. Def hit up Brix. More TV's and sound for your sports needs. I came here to get a drink during the Octoberfest. It was very fun for the younger crew that were there. I wanted to head upstairs, where I could look out to the Octoberfest excitement and happenings. The outside balcony was full of patrons, but I managed to find a nice spot as two people were leaving. I enjoyed my margarita, while people watching. The downstairs Bartender made me a very good drink. Spot on. I did not try any of their food items. It was too busy to stay for long. I enjoyed the fresh salt air and my drink and then I left. This is a lively and fun place for the younger crowd. read more

Meh. Overrated and overcrowded. We stopped in for dinner after seeing some good reviews on Yelp (I mean, 4 stars sounds like a solid option!). The interior decor is awesome. The bar is huge, in its own separate room from the "restaurant", which is literally an indoor food truck. A lot of us decided to order the rice bowl, which sounded promising. When we got our bowls, they looked disappointing. But maybe they would taste better than they looked? The rice was ... I don't even know. I couldn't tell if it was overcooked or undercooked but it was a steamed white rice gone horribly wrong. The rice was clumpy and squishy and hard in places, all at the same time. And it was the same across the board for everyone who ordered rice bowls. I ended up finishing the bowl, sans rice. The overall flavor was meh - too sweet, no spicy kick to offset the sweet... I don't know, y'all but I was not happy. I should have ordered a beer... might have made my rice bowl taste a little better. read more

Live music downstairs, plenty of space and DJ upstairs, indoor food truck (lol) window for ordering, beautiful balcony and outdoor seating overlooking the pavilion and Jax beach scene... "I like it, I love it, I want some more of it!" The menu is limited but the food is pretty good! The "La Fresca" is my favorite drink at Surfer! I absolutely love this place! I always have a blast when I come to town and head to the beaches. MAKE SURE YOU GO EARLY, the line is always LONG! This is one of the first bars you see once you enter the beaches. It's two stories and usually has live music playing when you first enter. I love to visit Surfbar when "The Band Be Easy" is playing. There's a huge bar to your right, and the bartenders are always friendly and ready to take your order! When you go further back on the first floor, there's a cool looking surfer bar that sells food and drinks(coke products). They have greats quesadillas. I usually add shrimp to mine for 99 cents more. My total comes to $3.70! Not bad! Food is on point for being open late night! They also have tacos and queso dip, along with other larger items on the menu that you can check out in my picture. Once you head upstairs, there is another bar, not as large as the one downstairs but it gets the job done! There are beautiful whicker hanging lights, and a nice over look of the street! There are couches and chairs for you to sit on too. During the day there is a surf shop open on the second floor as well! It's so cool. Love coming to visit, and I encourage anyone to stop by on their stay at jax beach! read more

Bartenders and other staff absolutely the worst. Service was weak and took for ever to get my credit card back when I paid. On my way out I was detained by a guy asking if I paid told him I did but wouldn't let me go until the server verified. I left my receipt on table and it was bussed away as soon as I stood up. The jerk that was holding me back didn't even apologize just moved out of my way. I did however say a few choice things to him on the way out. Sad to see that a Great place has turned into a whole different thing during this time. I had been coming to Surfer for years now and I was able to come with my brother for the first time and we were all kicked out apparently because we were Harassing the DJ If only the bouncer knew I only went to say hi and he got all upset (DJ Squish). Left the place peacefully, without arguing, without causing any scenes and as I'm walking outside bouncers start making fun of how I was dressed, my accent, How I looked. Instead of deescalating the situation they just made of me a whole show. I Felt discriminated and I if could rate them -5 stars trust me that I would do it without hesitation. When Freebird took its final bow, I was not only anxiously awaiting its successor, but rather nervous that a national chain restaurant would take over the reigns. Much to my pleasure, Surfer [The Bar] is a moonlight mile away from my fear and makes sense in Jax Beach. Now don't be fooled by the two floors of massive space, because there are no servers and no table service. You place your food orders at a faux food truck, which is connected to the kitchen. The menu is small, but you'll find tacos, nachos, bowls and burritos. Some with a surprising Japanese twist. Plus, there are two full service liquor bars - one downstairs and one upstairs. Ramen Noodle Burrito - My three favorite words in the English language! It's a total knockout. The ramen noodles have a rice-like consistency, which gives the burrito substance. I added short rib for my choice of protein and I'm so glad I did. Winner winner, burrito dinner. The upstairs is a must-see due to it's wow factor of interior design. There's a ping pong table, comfortable couches, and a wrap around deck to overlook the street life. A very strong first impression. We'll most certainly be back for more of this surf-themed watering hole! read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE from staff!! Rude female bouncer and bartenders that think they are cute. Clearly they are miserable working there.

I was visiting from out of town my first day in Jacksonville. I was so excited to visit this place as we good things about it. Oh well, I was totally wrong..... We had a beautiful day at the farmers market and we decided to come in to this restaurant for a drink to cool off . We were on our way out there soon as we walked out the door it started to downpour rain... we walked back into the restaurant. (Keep in mind I was visiting Jacksonville with my two family members that live in Saint Augustine) a woman security guard immediately pushed us out the door and told us that she needs to see our IDs and to throw away our drink immediately. We were so startled we didn't even know what was going on.... We are three grown ass, professional women I just got shoved out of a bar in front of everyone for no reason . She was so aggressive to the point where I had no idea what she was yelling at us for... we were completely startled & so embarrassed!!! We then went into the gift shop to try to talk to a manager , she walked over because she saw us in there requesting to talk to a manger and she said to the employee "are they calling me a bitch? " We then told her again that it was very inappropriate the way she acted. We explained to her how we had no idea why she was shoving us out the door and made us throwaway are things. This conversation went on for about 15 minutes. They finally offered us free drinks, but at that point, our whole entire day was ruined, and our energy was wasted on this whole event. Sidenote, when we went to get our free drinks, it was obvious that she whispered to the bartender & other employees about our situation... as the bartender was very cold. We couldn't wait to leave they are we will never be back. Ever. This is your warning.... Thank you for ruining our day in Jacksonville. Killllled the vibes honestly Heads up they call her "mama" As I'm writing this review it looks like there's tons of other negative reviews about this woman. read more

This new location still seems to be doing work on the exterior and interior. The outside and inside that is complete has a new hip feel. The floorplan has a downstairs bar with a stage. While the stage is not being used they have an enormous screen there for sports games. The downstairs also have a,nifty little kitchen area. The foods are fairly priced for what bar foods cost. There is outside seating in a separate area on the other side of the food location. The upstairs floor plan is a bar with most of the floor open for dancing. They have seating lined up around the wall. They also have outside seating around the upstairs balcony. You are welcome to bring your food upstairs and eat while enjoying the view of around the area. Both levels have male and female restrooms. We did not sample the bar drinks during this visit. That review along with the live bands setup will be added later. They do not have military discounts on the food. read more

This new Jax Beach spot is hip and trendy. So many areas to hang out. Downstairs offers a main bar with live music, an inside food truck with picnic table style seating and an outside patio with heaters. Upstairs includes another bar with lounge seating and a nice size balcony. You can only order food at the food truck on the first floor, however you can take the food upstairs or anywhere you like. The one unique thing about this spot that I loved is that no matter where you are, upstairs, downstairs, outside, you can order a drink from anyone and give them your name and they will add it to your tab. This is a nice touch that I've never seen anywhere! If you haven't stopped by make plans soon. I'm already making plans for next weekend! read more

Checked out the newest addition to the Jax Beach scene. It's has a really cool vibe, tasty eats and cold cocktails. The first floor has a large bar, DJ booth, stage and a cool air stream camper that you order food from. The second floor has a laid back vibe with a couple couches and a ping pong table. You can also sit back on the porch but you have to put up with smokers. We tried the ahi tuna nachos and they were flavorful and light. Order some gauc because you will have a a bunch of chips leftover. Also tried the short rib taco and it rocks. The fish taco was just a little too fishy for me. I will be back again to try out some of the Ramen dishes. It's going to be the happening spot at the beach this summer! read more

Beautiful location, beautiful day and what great food. I had a shrimp rice bowl and it was delicious! Fresh shrimp, great service and I loved the setup in there too. Stopped here while on the Ugly Christmas Sweater Bar Crawl. This place was really cool with its surfer theme. They had a live band which stated off good and then they stopped playing ( one song huh). Well went to the back and ordered tacos out the kitchen which looked like an old RV ( the metal one). I thought it was cool. The chicken tacos were delicious and fresh. The nacho chips that accompanied them were crispy and light. The nachos had a semi sweet sauce which was yum! Our friends ordered the beef burrito which looked delicious and filling. One ordered the chicken ramen bowl which she stated was good but a little spicy. Will return to this way out bar. read more

A one star is too high of a rating for this place! My husband, friends and I were having a drink at Surfer after being for hours under the sun. We were peacefully finishing the only 1 beer we ordered, and we were asked to leave while a bunch of Caucasian customers were not bothered or interrupted while they were drinking. As the woman on this 1st picture became more aggressive I decided to start taking pictures and this is where she went to grab my phone from me. And all over certain I am surrounded by other 20 something-year old guy who called me a bitch for asking why I was being treated this way and the two women in the picture proceeded to push me out of the place. Crazy to see reviews below in recent days because the EXACT same thing happened to me. I was forced out of this bar while simply using the restroom. Then this shirt chubby bearded fella told me to "get the fuck out" as I was just finishing washing my hands. I was completely confused. Even the police officers downstairs acknowledged to me there were issues at this place. Mind you this was at like 8:15 pm, after a friend and I had dinner. I understand stuff goes down at 1am at these types of places, but this wasn't that type of situation. From the looks of recent reviews they definitely have some bouncers on a power trip or maybe they are being instructed to do this from above them. Either way I'd avoid if you are are a decent human being in general that prefers not getting attacked when using the restroom. I got zero explanation, thankfully I was the one adult in the situation and just kept it moving because they were clearly looking/hoping for an altercation. Very unfortunate. Their drugging problem is huge. My girlfriend and her friends were given berry vodka redbulls by the bartender. A few minutes into drinking them they felt nauseated and sick. Keep in mind this is their first drink. Soon after they were all vomiting and blacking out. Unprofessional bouncers and staff pretty much said get over it. I knew the people were drugging girls. I'm a Reggae lover if it's uplifting and soulful so I attended the performance of Just Chameleons and loved every second of them. It was my first visit to this building since it was renamed and remodeled. It looked cheerful and was named proper for the decor. I was happily amazed of no coverage fee for the band and the line to get in was pretty quick. Our waitress was so good and very friendly even though she had to cover alot of people?
