I've been infected. I'm addicted. I can't stop thinking about it. And I'm ready for more... No, it's not the latest Justin Bieber hit song. It's the sensation you get as you ride an incoming wave. There's no greater feeling in the world than having a wave barrel around you as you glide effortlessly across its face on a 7' surfboard going Mach 10. Time slows down. Your senses are heightened. You feel the splash of the wave as it closes behind you. Your heart is pumping. Your adrenaline level surges as you punch out of the tube and back into reality. Thanks to Elliot's coaching, I was lucky enough to experience my first "tube ride" down in the shores of Puerto Rico at his surf camp. I first attended one of his surfing lessons with some friends over in Long Beach. Everybody had a blast; and from that experience, I decided to sign up for his surf retreat. It was an absolute treat to be down there in PR. He is a great instructor and also a very gracious host. After each surf session in Aguadilla, he showed me the best local eats and also made delicious food at his home to replenish the calories I burned that day. If you've never tried surfing or want to increase your abilities, I highly recommend Elliot as your teacher. I purchased the surf lesson coupon from Google Offer last week and decided to book a lesson right afterwards. We met at the east end of Long Beach. There were around 15-16 of us total with 3 instructor. 2 out of the 3 instructors are basically teenagers. They must be in high-school. The instructors did about 5 minutes of land instruction basically told you hot to stand up properly. Nothing special. Nothing worth talking about, all very amateur. Then, they brought us all in the water, all cramped together in a tiny space. We ran into each other every 10 minutes. It was the most dangerous thing ever. The older instructor held one of the student's board by the side and when the wave came that student board crashed into mine. Who hold a student's board sideway? It was so bad. There are many good surf schools in Far Rockaways or Long Beach, I highly do not recommend this school. It is unprofessional and they don't know what they are doing. read more

I scheduled a surfing lesson with surf 2 live via email about 2 weeks in advance of when I wanted to go out. We interacted only by email and although they offered me a 10am and a 12pm group lesson possibility, every email pushed the (twice as pricey) solo lesson. I chose the 10am group lesson (which they confirmed) and scheduled the rest of my day around it. Around 3:30 on the day before the lesson I emailed them to double check my reservation for the 10am group (threading the email that had asked which I'd like, my decision, and their confirmation - our most recent emails). They wrote back that they weren't offering a 10am group and that I could take the 12pm or a private lesson at 10am. Woah - first I'd heard of that! I wrote back that I had other obligations that I had built around their 10am group and that I would not be able to move them. They apologized and - in what is clearly an email signature - they mentioned that I could take a private lesson at any time for $125 of a group lesson at 10am or 12pm any weekend day for $75 and that they go out no matter what (unless conditions are unsafe). So, in my mind, I'm the only one who signed up for the 10am group and rather than hold up to their end of the deal - they canceled on me...and then didn't let me know that they were doing it, so had I not taken the initiative to email confirm I would have been standing around all by myself in a parking lot waiting for an instructor or group that wasn't going to show. Then they called at 9:50am to see if I had decided to take a lesson with them....really? Not classy. I ended up spending a little extra and getting a private lesson with Flying Point Surfing and had a great 10am session in an ocean that by noon was too rowdy for my beginner abilities. Signed my 9 year-old son up for a day of surf camp. He loved it! The instructors were enthusiastic and very encouraging. My son was riding waves all day! This past summer (more like late spring) I was super eager to learn to surf. A complete newbie who's never been on a surfboard or even touched a wetsuit. I misunderstood the session and Elliot reached out to me quickly and we decided on a private session. Day one (to be more exact within 20 mins) Elliot had me in the water working on balancing and getting comfortable. I appreciated this emensely because i learn by doing. He was patient encouraging and by the end of my 3 day sesions I rode a few waves to shore. Elliot and the surf to live crew are amazing. I would recommend them to anyone looking to learn to surf. Elliot is amazing. I had a lesson with him on Long Beach on two occasions - one private and one group. He also taught my kids how to surf and, at the end of the day, they were standing on the boards. After having two different lessons here in New York, i decided to come to his Surf Resort in Puerto Rico. The food was amazing, and his personal tour and instruction was really unbeatable. if you want to learn to surf, take a lesson with Elliot on Long Beach. If you want to have a surf vacation that's a hoot, stay with Eliot in Puerto Rico. Fly JetBlue from JFK...Book in advance for only $250 straight to Aguadir. Unlike the previous reviewer, i never had an experience where Eliot pushed the private lesson. Although, I do think its worth the investment if you want to pick up the sport quickly. Surfing has changed my life and I would recommend to Elliot to anybody wanting to get better or just getting started. read more

I got up!!! Never surfed a day in my life and had a ball at my lesson today, on what may be the hottest day of the year with tropical storm-sized waves. Elliot is a sweetheart who is super patient and knowledgable. I watched him interact with his campers and was touched by how great he was with the kids. His staff of local, talented surfers are encouraging and hard-working. Brian coached me up and then was able to analyize my stance. All while treading water for over 2 hours. Today was also the last day for his surfing camp this week. These kids were great! They were all able to surf like seasoned veterans. It is exhausting. I need a nap. This was probably the best workout I've gotten all year. So great, I strongly recommend if you're in Long Beach. read more

I've been learning with Elliott for a couple of years now (I'm a slow learner) - and every interaction has been professional and supportive and great. Even though I am still a newbie, I love my time out there and have learned something every time no matter how tired I was or how big or small the waves are. Elliott also does great camps for kids and I know he does other sessions for special-needs kids - and I can see he has the class and the experience to interact with everyone young and old in the same great way. If this sounds too good to be true, don't be cynical - surfing is not easy, at least when you start at 50, but the process has been great and very enjoyable. read more

Just got done with a three day surf camp at this awesome spot. Surf2live comes highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn to surf or enhance their surf skills. Super close to the city and affordable. Elliot had me catching waves within my first 15min in the water....and I have never surfed before. Elliot and the entire crew at surf2live were amazing. Not sure why other yelpers have issues with the age of the instructors, I mean, these guys/girls pretty much all grew up surfing. I don't care how old you are, as long you teach me how to get up on that board. And fyi- none of them were younger than 21!! Also, in the three days I was there, everyday there were probably four students max per instructor and in most cases two or three students per instructor. All of the students, young and not-so-young alike, had a great time and everyone was surfing by end of day one. Surf2live is amazing!!! All of the instructors are well trained and very good at giving tips to improve your surfing skills at all levels. Elliot is great at pairing you up with the right instructor for your personality and ability and does not hesitate to assist in making sure you have an awesome surfing experience. This was the best experience for my 11 year old that I've made since moving to long beach. We met on the beach last Saturday morning and she was paired up with terrific instructors. After spending some time learning safety and "how to's" she went in the ocean with others and several instructors. I'm not sure what they told her but it was incredible. She was surfing like she had been surfing for years. I'll admit I was tempted to sign her up with some of the local competitors but after seeing the love and care and of course results that this school has, I would never go anywhere else. I don't usually leave reviews for anything, however, I can't rave enough about Surf 2 Live! After considering all of the local options I signed my 11 year old daughter up for a week long camp. This was the best decision we made since we moved here! She was really shy and anxious about surfing in front of the other kids. One of the instructors, George, offered to work through his break to work with her alone while all of the other kids were on break. He certainly didn't need to do that, but he clearly cared about giving her a good experience with surfing and sacrificed to give it to her. And I see that level of commitment from all of the instructers. By the end of that day she was surfing as if she had way more practice than she had. Then on the second day she had an even better time! Elliot and the other instructors brought out a couple of stand up paddle boards and let all of the kids (and parents) try it out. Elliot has been awesome to work with as well. He is truly a kind soul that just wants to share the fun of surfing with everybody, which is also apparent with his charity work. She is signed up for next week also and is really looking forward to it. I really appreciate how accommodating the school is with everything from advice on boards, working on the specific surfing goals that she has, and the flexibility in scheduling! She loves surfing so much now that we plan on buying her a board so that she can keep it up. When I told Max (one of the instructors) that we were going to do that and that I was concerned with her being able to catch her own waves with no instructors helping, he laid out a plan that will work on getting her independently catching waves by week 2! I am so happy with this experience and I can't wait to get a few lessons in myself once my back is healed! I read some negative reviews about the instructors being young and inexperienced so I just want to say that every single one of them was awesome! They are trustworthy, enthusiastic, and very helpful in the water. They all have an apparent expertise on surfing and I trust my daughter in the water with them. They are all so excellent with the adults and kids of all ages. Over all, Surf 2 Live is a family friendly and welcoming business that has my full support! read more

I have taken 3 lessons with Surf2Live because they consistently offer group lesson on the weekends at a reasonable price. I once arrived to find that they had canceled the lesson due to really strong rip current (unsafe conditions), and once got a call the day before that there would not be good surf at 10am so I was moved to the 12pm lesson. I have never taken a private lesson with Elliot but I do think that that's probably money well spent. Even when he spent a few minutes with me during the group lesson I could see that he would be a really great private instructor because he gave actual feedback on what I needed to do/change. I have seen people at the group lessons who had done several sessions and were being taught how to turn and do more advanced stuff, so people at most levels of learning will probably get something out of the lesson. The group lessons I took were mostly staffed by teenagers who had varying degrees of interest and enthusiasm for being there. There were a few times where I found them to be unprofessional and had a bit of an attitude that you would expect from kids that age but all in all I think for the price a 2 hour lesson (1.5 hours-ish in the water) is well worth it if you're only going to go once or twice a season. If you're interested in more I think a private lesson with Elliot is a good choice. read more
