Locals Collective is such a sweet l'il cafe. The vibe is relaxed and lovely, with friendly, helpful staff (especially the woman wearing the ramen cat shirt, whose name I didn't get, unfortunately). The menu is small, but includes some healthy options like the breakfast sammy (with two eggs, avocado, sprouts, tomato, Monterey Jack cheese, and spicy aioli on whole grain toast), acai bowls, wraps, overnight oats and that sort of thing. The breakfast sandwich wasn't very big -- or rather it was a normal size, well filled, but made with commercially standard-size sliced bread, not a hero, sub, or roll -- and was perhaps a touch spendy at $12. The Progeny inhaled the sandwich after snarfing down a sushi roll we'd brought -- and still wanted two large protein bars, after. (I guess surfing cultivates a good appetite.) He said he enjoyed it, though. My iced coffee was a touch weak, but serviceable. There's pleasant seating indoors and out, with a few folks working on laptops. There are quite a few dining options on this particular block, including burritos, pizza, ice cream, and a few full-service restaurants -- but in terms of aesthetics and overall look-feel, Locals Collective takes the win. Surf boards (I think soft tops only) are available for rent at Locals Collective, for $35 / 2 hours. Prices are a bit higher than at Breakwater Surf, which rents for a jaw droppingly low price of $5 an hour -- but Locals does offer additional amenities like changing rooms and a shower, which I'm prima-donna enough to think is worth it. You can also rent a wet suit, which you'll probably want if the air temp is anything cooler than 75F. Waves at Beach 68 are fairly small, but reportedly consistent. We'll be back for more, I'm sure.

Only thing, they required as collateral is my ID, which I was totally fine with. I'm not used to that kind of honesty these days! He even gave me a few pointers on what materials I should use and suggested a few youtube videos. I literally went next door to the hardware store, picked up what I needed for under $5, went home and did it myself. All it took was a razor blade, some super glue, an ice-cold beer and I was done! While there, I noticed some really cool hoodies, surf boards galore (even some nicely priced used ones in the back), and a ton of dope skateboard kicks. I haven't said the words "dope" or "kicks" in quite a long time (especially in the same sentence) but having stepped foot in this pretty hip skate/surf shop definitely brings it out of you. Hang tight! Or is it hang-loose? Either way, this is definitely a rad shop right by the beach!

We called multiple times but no one picked up and we had no option to leave a message. Also messaged and called via Instagram. We got in and they told us they didn't do any wetsuit rentals and did not have ANY women's wetsuits available to sell. Planned our whole weekend around surfing this morning and our whole day was wasted. On top of that, they couldn't even refund us right away because it was done online. Horrible management and horrible experience, do not recommend at all.

I ordered a dunno board for curbside pickup and picked out some mob grip tape when I swung by. ***I actually swung at a time by when they technically closed but I called ahead and the guy was super chill said no problem he didn't even rush me out he went out of his way to answer all my questions as a new skater and recommended me where to go to get the stuff I wanted since there was a national skate supply shortage at the time. Also gave me some clear grip squares for free since I only wanted a small bit for my board design which saved me like $8 tbh.

After having half the tail of my sweet cedar topped hess 6'0 destroyed by somebody's errant…read morelongboard and then searching NYC for someone who repairs eps boards I found David Murphy and Imaginary Surf Co. David is a shaper and he makes amazing, innovative surfboards in his studio in Bushwick. I met him there and my fears of trying a new repair shop (I live and surf in Oregon and am visiting NYC for work) were quickly put at ease. The boards he makes are super progressive and very well crafted, not to mention very eco-friendly. Our brief conversation about what the process of repair would require was exactly what I needed to hear. He projected two weeks for the work to be done. Two weeks later the board was repaired. Tess, an employee there did the work. She matched every nuance of the left side of the tail. The edges were identical to the original side. She basically rebuilt and matched a very complex and responsive tail in two weeks. She also found and fixed a small ding that I hadn't noticed. I learned later that Tess is a sculptor, no surprise to me now, her detailed work is solid and exact. The day I picked up the board was a Saturday and the surf was on. The board surfed like a champ and provided me with a full weekend of great waves. The board surfs the same as the day I bought it. Thank you David and Tess!!!

When I came in to inquire about it and his hours the shopkeeper whom I'll assume is Gordon was very pleasant. I actually came back later to buy the apparel and he maintained the chill attitude and friendliness as before. The shop is a nice size with clothes, surfboards, skateboards and accessories for all those products. Surfboards and I assume skateboards can be repaired here which is cool. The shop itself seems to fit in well as its a beach town and just seems like a nice spot to come for the above mentioned needs or drop in to chat about those above things with the owner.
