Rented some surfboards here. My friend rented booties and gloves and a wetsuit. We had a great 2 hour surf session on a frigid day. So fun though. It cost me $15 to rent the board for 2 hours. Very reasonable. The staff is kind and nice. They let you change inside and store all your stuff there. Super nice of them, I don't know how we would've kept our stuff safe without them. Left my surfboards on the side of the road, I was 45min away and needed someone to be a hero! Dylan didn't waste any time and hopped in his car on a mission. The great people of Rockaway were nice enough not to walk away with them and Dylan brought everything back to the shop until I could get there. The shop is great too! Gerald the owner is a super kind, super helpful individual who doesn't mind talking to you for 45 minutes about Costa Rica surf spots. The rest of the staff is also super awesome... including the token cute guy that gives surf lessons and SUP lessons. One day when I came out to Rockaway and there were no waves, I regrettingly got an SUP lesson and Chris made it a ton-o-fun! The shop has pretty much anything you could want.. although their stock sometimes runs low on various longboard surf leashes in the summer (but that's to be expected). They have fantastic swimwear sales at various times throughout the year-I bought my favorite Body Glove bikini surf top here. This shop has inspired me to want to open a shop of my own someday. read more

Putting into words how great this shop is is a challenge for me because they are every bit amazing. Gerald, one of the owners, literally talked to me and showed me their boards for almost an hour and a half while they were crazy busy. He didn't display an ounce of pressure to buy one either, he was genuinely happy to teach me about boards and show me all they have. I am a beginner who no longer needs lessons and just needs to get out there on my own more so I am looking for my first board. I have every intention of buying from Breakwater 100%. The staff is so friendly and helpful. They will spend tons of time with you and give you all the attention you need. Sure it can be a little slow when they're slammed but you'll find that anywhere. I love that even if you don't buy anything, they are so happy to just see you. If you're going to the beach and frequenting a surf shop, chill out and enjoy the good vibes. You're away from the city and Rockaway is magical. If you are wound up and mean, please do not visit this shop because the people here just don't deserve that. read more

Any bad reviews on this shop couldn't possibly be any farther than the truth! This shop is awesome. Locals or not, Nigel and Rudel are extremely nice guys who are bringing good things to the community. They have plans to host surf competitions, community events and charity free surf days for those who can't afford to take surf lessons. Also, every time I am in their shop they are eager to help me find just what I need instead of what they'd like to sell me. As far as the actual shop goes, it is in a great location. Right up the street from the beach in case you snap a leash or need to rent a board and don't feel like brining your own. They always seem to be hooking people up to. The brands they carry are great and they have a wide selection of the newest products. I was recently vacationing in New York with my sister and we both decided to try something new and go surfing. We rented our gear from Breakwater and they were super helpful in recommending the right board for us. Since it was my first time, we got a lesson with Dillon. I couldn't ask for a better instructor. It's obvious I'm a beginner and probably looked pretty rediculous my first time out, but he was super encouraging. In fact, everyone who helped us at Breakwater was super friendly and down to earth. Good place for surfboard rentals, can't beat $10/hour. Grab a board and walk straight to the 67th street surf break. I wish they were open a little earlier in the morning for rentals, but I guess you gotta buy your own board if you want to beat the crowds. read more

The guys at Breakwater are awesome! I have lived out here for years and the guys that work at Boarders are beyond rude. When Breakwater opened, it was like a breath of fresh air out here! Nigel is ALWAYS willing to go out of his way to make his prices reasonable. When I took my board in to be fixed, it was completed super quick and for a fair price. He doesn't talk down to you and carries a good variety of products. For those who don't like that he's not a Rockaway native, get over yourself. The majority of New York residents are not natives. I hope Breakwater stays in business for years to come! read more

No, I will not be returning to this place. I have been here a few times and always had the feeling that it was a new shop, so they need a little time to get up and running. So it's been well over a year now, and I was looking for a new board and figured id have a look. I walked in and someone who acted more like the weed delivery guy than a surf shop worker, asked me " you wanna rent a board". I didn't! I asked a few basic question about the stuff in the shop. He couldn't answer my question and clearly had zero surf knowledge. He didn't really know about the stuff in the shop, and made it very clear that he would rather I left the shop. Well, I have a car and money so I don't need to take crap like this to get surf gear. So, like I said, won't be returning. Clearly the owner doesn't understand what a surf shop is suppose to be! read more

7 days ago I called all my local surf shops searching for a new 5/4 hooded wetsuit for my daughter. No one had any in stock. On a whim, I called Breakwater Surf Co which we stop by when we surf in the Rockaways. We showed up right at their normal closing time. They were super patient with us as my daughter tried on a few wetsuits. We made our purchase. On the way out they said when she tries it on at home if there is an issue just bring it back. Well she tried it on at home, it was too big, we drove back and found a better fitting one which was less expensive. They exchanged it and gave me the difference back. No questions asked and super friendly and helpful. I've been going to my local shops for decades and one in particular makes you feel like a criminal when I have to exchange something. Breakwater now has 2 new fans and we will be shopping there whenever possible. Support your surf shops. read more

Wish I could give this place zero stars. Today was my first experience and no doubt my last. I received a shirt and shorts worth $100 as a gift and they would not allow me to exchange because the items were from the "40% final sale - no returns" rack. The buyer had spent $42 on the shirt, so that would mean the short sleeved t-shirt originally cost $70 if it was supposedly purchased on sale. Either the employee was lying to me or this is the most over priced surf shop on the planet. On top of it the employee could not have been more rude and obnoxious. I was born and raised in the neighborhood and always do my best to promote local businesses, however I will never recommend this place to people I know. If you want friendlier and more flexible customer service, stick with Rockaway Beach Surf Shop on 116th. read more

I recently bought a surfboard at Breakwater and I had such a great experience. All of the guys that helped me were really nice (they even waxed my new board for me before I took it to the beach). I would definitely recommend this store for someone interested in buying a new board or even renting one, they have a good selection and are very helpful the minute you walk into the store.
