I highly recommend New York Surf School. I booked a 4 hour (double-session) because I figured it would take a me a while to get the hang of it. The water was 65 degrees, but with the wet suit they provided I felt comfortable the whole time. The board was a 9 foot foam top with three fins. Angela provided on-beach instruction on how to paddle and pop-up -- which was pretty quick, so we got right in the water. Andrew took us in the water and we started catching waves right away. He puts you in just the right position and gives you a push and tells you when to pop-up. We basically caught a ton of waves all day with tips on form throughout. Andrew is very nice and a pleasure to hang with. The waves were small, maybe 2 to 3 feet, but it was perfect for learning how to stand up and ride straight in to the beach. read more

I really recommend going surfing in the Rockaways if you're looking for a fun activity to do. My biggest regret was not going to Rockaway Beach more frequently because of how accessible by public transportation it is.....it just takes a bit of time depending on where you live. I've surfed before, but wanted to try this school out since it's been a while and was unfamiliar with the waves. I did the $90 group package and it was definitely worth it. They provided the wetsuit and board, so all you had to bring was yourself. The instructors were super friendly and encouraging. The guy I had did a really great job of just simply explaining key points so you can get on your board and ride. The amount of time spent surfing is plentiful and you will have a ton of chances to ride nice waves. My recommendation is to google the wave heights and coordinate the best time to ride. Would definitely do it again, and I think for next year I'm contemplating on buying a 10-pack package so I can go more often. Surfs Up! read more

I just finished my first 2 hr private lesson with NY surf school and it was amazing! If you're worried about cold water temperatures before it hits full summer weather, don't worry! They provide thick hooded wet suits (with shoes and gloves) that keep you cozy (for reference, it was mid 50 degrees when I went). Shawn (or Sean?) took time to teach me how to paddle effectively and to pop up on the board. Shoutout to Kwame too for helping me even get into my wetsuit. He helped me get going on so many waves to the point where I felt like I could get the hang of it. The only tip I can provide is make sure you are ready for an intense workout! I would start off with a 1 hr lesson private first lesson if it's your first time and your cardio levels aren't up to par (like me). Overall, I definitely recommend checking out NY surf school. I actually started looking into lessons with a competitor (Locals surf school) but my class was cancelled last minute and they never followed up for rescheduling. I'm glad I took a chance and booked with NY surf school instead. Looking into lesson packages too! read more

Had the time of my LIFE doing the 11am 2 hour group lesson this past weekend. Super affordable at $90 for 2 hours, and the instructors were amazing. I had zero prior surf experience, and with their guidance and land lesson instructions, I was able to stand on the board & catch most waves. The entire 2 hours was an absolute blast. Just finished a 2:30 class with NY Surf School and it was awesome!!! I have never surfed before + I don't know how to swim (I'm 27 years old - I know it's sad lol). My bf really wanted to try it out so I reluctantly went. We took the class with Greg & the owner Frank along with some other instructors. The class was composed of 6 first time surfers and 5 instructor. Everyone was super chill & friendly. They teach you the basics then hand you a board and you're good to go. They help you scoop some waves and stay with you the whole time. I had a really fun day today - my arms are exhausted I'm ready for a nap. I really recommend this place. Really fun group of instructors who were very helpful and accommodating to beginners. Group lesson started with a basic intro on land but was lighter on instruction once we got into the water, maybe because there were a lot of people in my group for them to take care of. I still had a great time and was surprised how many waves I caught. It helps to be a decent swimmer as you will be doing a lot of paddling to get back out. I just had my second lesson with NY Surf School. The first one (summer 19) was in warm weather, but I really wanted to try the cold weather surfing (my first instructor had assured me it wasn't so bad with a wetsuit), so I went this past weekend. They had all the gear to keep me warm head to toe, in the right size. My instructor, Nikito, was super-patient, and even though it was only my third time surfing, he taught me a few things that really changed my ability. The waves were 1-2 feet, so they were nice easy rollers and I got up a lot. It was an exhilarating day and I can't wait to go back for more lessons. read more

The instructor Sean was very informative and nice. The lesson was for two hours but it was actually only one hour and 25 minutes since the other members of the group lesson were late. I figured since they were 35 minutes late, the lesson would be extended since I had nothing to do with their lateness. I paid for a two hour lesson and got a one hour and 25 minute lesson. Just took my first lesson ever this past Saturday (7/13/19). The instructors were friendly and motivational and their experienced and patient coaching allayed my nervousness right away. Also, there was a sufficient instructor-to-student ratio that allowed for individual attention to each student's needs. I enjoyed the class and loved the encouraging and enthusiastic vibe of the staff that had me riding several waves much longer than I ever thought I would my first time out. Wow! The positive reviews led me to choose NY Surf School over other options and it was absolutely the right choice! We came today for a two hour group lesson (which turned into semi private because it was only one other person in my group. We met with Frank (...possibly the owner?) who was over the top nice and wonderful and welcoming from start to finish. We had a female instructor who does a quick lesson on the sand since most of the real learning happens in the water. I felt comfortable and confident with the instruction given and had an AWESOME first experience with surfing. I showed up in a bathing suit and the surf school provided everything else - wet suit top, surf board and most importantly the lesson. I didn't think I had a chance of catching onto the sport but with the detailed guidance I was given, I rode the first wave I went after. This was a a true bucket list experience and I couldn't be happier that I did this. Only regret is I didn't try this earlier. I'll absolutely be back again for another lesson and wouldn't think to sign up with anyone else. My daughter's confidence with her surfing is sky high now and she loves that she got a nickname. I had a very negative experience with one of the instructors that clearly needs anger management therapy. I attempted to call, email, call again to politely discuss the situation but was repeatedly ignored. I received a ridiculous and insulting reply to my email advising me to text them bc they were too busy to reply to an email. Implying that their time is more valuable than mine. To be fair, I am a local and everyone I have ever dealt with from this company has been extremely friendly. But this one situation stood out and was important enough to me to make time to attempt a reasonable discussion / resolution. I would absolutely not allow my kids to be "instructed" by the hostile individual I encountered. P.S. this is the only negative review I have ever written re any business on yelp. that's how bad my experience was. read more

On day 1 there was an incoming storm so I couldn't learn much but the instructors tried really hard to teach us and give us an experience. On day two I was able to practice getting on the outside and paddling. On day 3 I stood up a few times on the board and it was way more fun. Felipe was my favorite, he took the time to pull me to the side and show me his way and it made a big difference. He also showed me how to make it to the outside with less drama. With one other instructor I got hit with other peoples boards four times so I would definitely suggest if that happens to you, just learn to go out on your own. It really is about the timing and taking in all the little tips to get better and better. I think the instructors give good feedback and get you surfing pretty quickly. Great experience - I went for a 9am group lesson on Memorial Day weekend knowing it might be mobbed, but there were only five people in my group! Greg walked us through the basics on the beach, answered all our questions, and encouraged us into the water. Four staff members rotated around helping us spot and catch waves. I went to the Rockaways to help a friend with her youngest child while her two older ones had a surf lesson, and decided to take one myself. I'm 57 years old - and it was amazing. I wish I'd been surfing all along, and I'm definitely going to do it again. The teacher was incredibly patient and relaxed - as he needed to be. So I'm gonna tell you why these guys are the absolute best around. My second time surfing ever and I misread the conditions so the waves were much higher than my skill level. Despite the teams great paddle out instruction I was pretty prettified (and seasick) by the time I got past the break that day. Greg particularly was pretty awesome in helping me calm down and stuck with me the whole time while we were on the water (even when all I wanted to do was lie down on my board). When I realized I that the waves were just too big for my comfort level, Kwame towed me back to shore and was the best human as I legit had a panic attack on the beach. I've been back twice since then and can't imagine paddling out with anyone else! read more

They are very welcoming and have a variety of boards to choose from which is fantastic because it's nice to be able to try different ones out when you aren't an absolute beginner. The classes are so fun and you get a lot of attention from the instructors because there are so many. Even on busy weekends there's usually between 2 and 4 students per instructor. Danny, Joel and Kwame are fantastic, and so is Frank, the owner, for that matter. They have water and snacks and usually pizza all for the taking as well. They also take pictures (you have to sign a release) so you might find yourself shredding it on their Facebook page. read more

I have been taking lessons with NYC Surf Schools for 3 seasons, mostly summers. I am rather busy and I also travel from Upper Manhattan, so I appreciate their flexibility around the schedule as the trains are often delayed and messed up. The crew is awesome, knowledgeable, friendly, always up for fun and a good joke. Yet, I appreciate the instructors' attentiveness to my personal needs in accordance with my surf level and regard for my goal to seriously learn and make improvements. I don't know what to say... I just love NYSurfSchool!! I started learning last summer and was able to surf well into November, over the winter they provided me with wetsuit. booties, gloves and hat and I was toasty warm out there in the ocean. I brought my nine and 12-year-old last summer and they just started surf camp this week. They love it as much as I do. The instructors are all wonderful, I think I've worked with almost everyone. Their goal is to make sure you have a great time and that everyone gets up on the board. It is an amazing workout, not to mention super Zen out there while you're relaxing out on the board. The instructor to student ratio is good, and the teachers were very involved and helpful. Within the first half of the camp, all four of my kids were able to surf successfully (meaning that they could catch a wave and "pop up" on their boards"). The prices for the surf camp (9am-1pm) were great. Strongly recommend the four hour camp if you can get to the beach by 9am. read more
