I purchased a group package and received 2/3 of the lessons. David kept asking to reschedule until we were in mid winter. I waited until the summer and he held my outstanding lesson hostage until I wrote a good review for sierra surf school. I wrote one and therefore he finally agreed to schedule my prepaid lesson. I signed up for a group lesson and got an awesome one from David today. People in my group and I can stand up after some land practices even though this is all our first time riding waves. I am so glad my boyfriend and I took a class with David! For some reason I was really nervous to give surfing a try, but David made me feel so comfortable and capable every step of the way. Also: it was SO FUN. By halfway through the class, I was able to shake off my nerves, stand up, ride waves, and really enjoy the experience. The very next day I went out on my own (my boyfriend and I rented a board from David!) because I was excited to try again. You can tell David LOVES to surf and teach, and is so skilled at breaking down the basics - somehow he made surfing seem easy. David met my son and me by the beach for a last minute lesson - weather was forecasting rain until two days before. He even called me about an hour ahead because the waves looked like they had picked up and he wanted to make sure we had a good experience and gave us the option to cancel our private lesson. Fortunately, my son had surfed a couple of times before and really wanted to go that day. We were very glad we did - I had done a few surfing lessons with another group on the beach, but by my third lesson with them, for some reason I couldn't even get on my feet - everyone was frustrated. By my third try with David, I was able to stand on the surfboard (in my Warrior II yoga pose - but both feet pointing to the side ;) ). He was great with my little boy, who's 9 this year - establishing a rapport with him pretty quickly and naturally. Surfing really is a state of mind, along with having your body doing what your mind wants it to do. And I think David has definitely helped me reach the place of being able to get up on that board and surf - even if for a minute or so. Surfing is, like we said on the ocean that day, a metaphor for life. And if you find the right teacher, you can learn what you had set out to do. I haven't had much experience with surfing and wanted to try taking a lesson . A friend of mine had recommended I try surfing with Sierra. She had been surfing with them for awhile and spoke highly of the owner David. I took her advice and glad I did! I took a class my first class with Ted who was awesome and got me up on my board. I took some lessons with David and I have to admit the idea of surfing was a bit intimidating. He was very reassuring that we would go at a learning pace I was comfortable with. I was so happy that I rode a wave during my first lesson! David held the back of the board and told me when to paddle and stand up of course but it was no less special because of that. Even though it was a success for me David seemed equally pleased. He was really patient, easy going, and just a great guy to work with. Future lessons were even more exciting as we worked on more beginner techniques but I noticed he had students of all levels. I would definitely recommend this surf school. i've been surfing for about a year, but haven't had any professional training, and struggle getting up on the board. i don't know why i waited so long to get lessons because everyone at sierra surf school is amazing. derek was a fantastic instructor. he explained things well, pointed out each time what i did right and what needs correction. i have never been so exhausted from surfing before. they really kick your butt, in a good way. they also focus on one on one or two person sessions, instead of groups like a lot of the other schools in the neighborhood. also ask derek to show you some of his tricks on his board. keep up the good work guys! :) fyi, full disclosure, i did use a living social discount, but i would pay full price for another lesson. read more

I just did my first lesson with David, and I highly recommend him. I went for a 2-hour lesson on a weekday morning at 8am. I suggest doing a weekday, because the water is much less crowded. Also, go early if possible. The waves tend to be better before 10am. I had never surfed before, so I was starting absolutely from scratch. When I showed up, David was waiting with a board and wetsuit. He asked me my size the day before, so the wetsuit fit like a glove. We spent about 15-20 minutes on the beach going over the basics. We practiced doing the "pop up" about a dozen times until I felt pretty comfortable, and then we got in the water. I was a little nervous, but David didn't let any time pass. He picked the first wave, got me pointed toward shore, and gave me a little push. I could hear him behind me telling me exactly what to do. Up I went, successfully riding the first wave, and David was cheering me on the entire time. Not every wave went as smoothly as that first one, but he gave me pointers and helped me feel more confident as the lesson went along. David is trying hard to get his new business off the ground, and I really hope he succeeds. In addition to being an expert surfer, he's just a really great dude. He is very laid back, super positive, and supportive. I could tell that he was genuinely excited to be a part of my first surfing experience. He didn't try to sell me anything. He knew I was just there to learn, and he made sure that happened. Highly recommended. read more

Always wanted to try surfing, I happened to meet David and the next day I was at my fist surf lesson. I'm thankful and super glad I took his class, after 20 minutes I was in the water standing on my board actually surfing. It was unbelievable for me that I managed to do so after such a short time, I can only say it's because I had the best teacher! it was an intense 2 hours session, and I truly made the most out f it, with David's instructions! I took my 10 year old daughter for a two hour lesson with Dave and had a blast. I'm a bit of a land shark and can't swim very well so very reassuring having Dave there out in the water with you the whole time especially with a 10 year old. He's great with kids, my daughter was standing and riding waves after about a half hour. I rode three solid waves in myself and couldn't have been more pleased with the results. With Dave's help we managed to ride in waves nonstop for over two hours even on a day where they weren't very large. There is a lot of bigger surf schools in the area and with it comes bigger classes, less personal attention. With a smaller school there is a more personal connection with you. My boyfriend and I recently took a 2 hour surf lesson with David at Far Rockaway Beach. The entire meet up process was really easy and well communicated to us. He had our wetsuits ready to go and transported us (along with the boards) over to the beach. I have to say I went in with little to no expectation of actually being able to ride a wave since neither of us had ever surfed before. David did a great job of a giving us a quick but thorough land lesson on form, how to pop up properly and key tips to not get knocked out by your board in the water. After that, we hit the water and David began picking waves and guiding us through the process of getting up on the board. And after just a few tries, we both were riding waves! The rest of the 2 hour class was so much fun and David was really supportive the entire time. He goes out of his way to remain positive and make sure you are feeling good about the experience. He gave us a ton of helpful tips and corrected our form without stalling the process of actually surfing. We were hooked instantly and his calmness really put us at ease.
