Perfect location, casual & classic gulf beach food. It wasn't cheap but it also wasn't the worst I'd seen price wise in the area. We actually liked this place so much that we came two nights in a row. The first night we had two kids shrimps and two cocktails for $100. The next night we had two cocktails, an appetizer and fish tacos for $70 so it's worth doing some math and sharing meals if you're on a budget. It was a 3.4 experience overall. Pros: The view is amazing! Get a table outside--the shade and breeze will keep you plenty cool. You can also order your own food & drinks at the indoor bar and then carry it outside to the picnic tables on the sand. There was also plenty of parking when I arrived around 3pm on a Thursday, whereas my first beach restaurant choice had no parking. The service was pretty good. Cons: They can't make a skinny margarita--not a huge deal, but seems odd, particularly when there are menu items in the $40-$50 range. The spicy margarita I had was neither spicy, nor did it taste like it had any tequila. What I really don't like was that the music doesn't fit the vibe at all. I had a very bad dining experience at the Surf Hut. The restaurant positions itself as a popular "fun in the sun" beachside dining destination, advertising and promoting heavily in the Destin area. They serve a little of everything, from seafood to tacos, salad and burgers, to in my case, a large live insect burrowing through my food. To be clear, my Beach Burger was delivered with a quarter-sized insect that looked like a beetle with wings, climbing in and out of the patty and fries. This is how it was delivered from the kitchen; I do not believe it flew in as my plate was being delivered. My waitress offered to take it back to be remade. What she didn't offer, and this is an important point, was an apology or explanation as to how this even reached me. During the remainder of our meal, which was cut short because we mostly lost our appetites, no manager came by to apologize either. The restaurant did not remove a penny from the bill. When I returned home, I reached out to Terry L., the general manager, and asked for an accommodation to the bill. At his request, I texted a photo of the credit card receipt. I asked that the cost of the burger be refunded and he promised to make things right. He has not done so, with my recent follow up going unanswered. I also received no response when I escalated the incident to Salt Water Restaurants Inc., the parent of the Surf Hut, or Nick S., the CEO. You learn a lot about a business, in this case a restaurant, for how it responds when things go wrong. I don't like publicly calling out restaurants but the Surf Hut's failure to resolve what amounted to a terribly served entrée and a ruined dinner speak volumes. I personally will not dine at their restaurant again. Don't be taken in by their marketing. Their food in my case was lacking and there are plenty of better restaurants in the area. read more

Having lived in Florida for 30 years we know fresh seafood. Our two main courses were steamed peel & eat shrimp which tasted mealey, definately not fresh. They had only cocktail sauce with high fructose corn syrup. We sent it back. The substitute was broiled fish with sides all overseasoned, strange taste. The second dinner was tenderloin on skewer medium. It was undercooked, sent back twice to finish cooking. The beef was not up to par. I would not recommend this restaurant. The only positive thing was our SERVER DONTAE. He was very kind, accommodating, excellant. We were given a 15% loyalty on each dinner. The price was high relative to subpar food. He took our drink orders quickly and brought them right out then we all ordered our meals. The kids decided to check out the beach while we adults got caught up on family stuff. Great spot on the beach! Surf Hut is apparently a classic in my family, as we went here many years ago when I was younger and we came back for more this past summer. While we were waiting to be seated, my mom, sister, and I enjoyed the cornhole courts that were set up as the sun was setting. We had so much fun - a great way to pass the time! When we were seated after about 20 minutes, we got a spot on the patio overlooking the beach. For food, we split a dip and I got the tacos.
