The place is small and parking is difficult... the price is pretty high for the all you can eat Korean BBQ... If I were comparing this to LA BBQ I would have to give it 1 star... if I were to compare it to NY, GA or even VA K-BBQ then it would get 2 stars. But if you are just judging things from Philly proper... I can give it 3 1/2 stars for the attentiveness of the staff and making sure that all the different meats are available and brought quickly. I just really think for the price, the quality of the meat should be much better. I don't know if people are eating too much and the restaurant needs to compensate for it, but some of the meats were cut too thick and the steak tasted a bit older. We came around 3pm on a Friday and were the only ones in the restaurant. Our server was very friendly and helped us understand their policy of not wanting to have any trash, and encouraging us to order small amounts given that our party of 3 wanted to have the 'unlimited' buffet option. The meats were good - in particular I enjoyed the Hawaiian steak, shrimp, and squid. I wish there were more vegetable options than just the mushrooms and onions, since there is just so much meat, but since we ordered the 'unlimited,' we just kept asking our server to bring out more mushrooms and onions. My only complaint is that the same tongs were being used to handle both raw and cooked meat - I always learned growing up to not cross-contaminate, and even when we have hot pot at home and similar dining in other restaurants, there are always at least two sets of utensils for this reason. read more

I've been back to Surah multiple times since my first review and have been recommending it a lot, however, my last experience was not great and don't think I'll be back. Our group of 5 came in on a Saturday night and parking was available. It was busy but we were able to be seated as soon as we came in. The tables were definitely not spaced out to follow COVID and social distancing guidelines, but luckily the table next to us left a few minutes after we arrived. Service was slow, but to be fair there only seemed to be one server (who was literally running back and forth). We ordered meats but didn't get rice, didn't get all our orders together, didn't get cups with our water, waited a while to get sodas, etc. By the time our first round of meats were done cooking and turned cold, we were still waiting on drinks and rice. This Surah location is right next to the Upper Darby HMart which makes it convenient for a meal right after all that shopping. I've been to the other 2 Surah locations before, both are far larger than this one if space and seating is an issue for you, especially in COVID times. The meat quality was just OK. The best thing on the menu is probably the pork bulgogi and everything else was mostly meh. What I found most disappointing is that the spicy meat selections aren't necessarily marinated in anything, they just toss on a spicy sauce right before they bring it out to you and as such, the flavors are more bland compared to other KBBQ establishments. I compensated by asking for a side of gochuchang. Oh also, if you check in either on FB or IG and show it to them, they'll give you a free soda with your meal. With that being said, there was just a touch too much of cross-contamination between the meats for my personal comfort. The waitress kept offering to help cook the meat for us even though we were capable of managing it on our own. We would've appreciated the service more had they not continued to mix the raw meat tongs with the cooked meat tongs and use the same pair of scissors to cut the raw and cooked meats. Overall, solid KBBQ. I'm a huge fan for KBBQ and I enjoy my experience eating here. I would recommend the chadol, bulgogi, and la galbi, which comes from the All You Can Eat BBQ A order. The meats and food has a good amount of flavor. The service can get a bit slow when it's crowded so I recommend people to stay attentive or order more ahead of time which I normally do cause we usually eat the food pretty quickly. This is Surah's third location and I would have to say that this is by far my most favorite location. 1. Lower Gwynedd - great if you live in Montgomery County but very far for Phila residents. This location used to be bomb.com but as others have noted, quality has gone down somewhat for certain meats. 2. Gogi - their second location, not bad but seems to cater towards more of the non-Korean taste buds. 3. Upper Darby - smallest location, but feels the most coziest. Staff was great. Meat quality and selection stick with the Hawaiian steak and pork belly and you won't be disappointed! Man that Hawaiian steak was so goooooood. Not a fan of the chadolbaegi and LA kalbi. Preferably I like a thin small cut of chadol when it's nice and juicy. The chadol here can be a bit dry. The LA kalbi is slightly thinner cut, and I prefer no bone but it's not bad. I would recommend that you try it at least. But definitely definitely get the Hawaiian steak! Their bibimbap was on point,super delish, great balance between the rice and veggies. Seafood pancake was also very delicious, they don't skimp on the seafood either and it tasted fresh. Some other Korean places use little pieces from a frozen package, that has a scent and flavor of frozen, which I can't stand. Surah's seafood pancake was superb! I'm a huge fan of Korean BBQ so I was intrigued to see if this location would be a decent spot as it's not in a super mainstream or populous area when it comes to Philadelphia or the Philly suburbs. Overall, the meats and sides are pretty good! While the meat is definitely not top-notch quality, they're decently marinated and get the job done in satisfying my KBBQ cravings! They have all the typical sides to complement KBBQ - lettuce, garlic, peppers, kimchi, and other banchan. The pricing is incredibly reasonable with all you can eat (AYCE) sets starting at $25 or $30, depending on how much variety you want. Aside from meats, a soup/stew and house salad are also included in the AYCE option. They also have a la carte items as well, such as dumplings or bibimbap (flavorful rice stone bowl) for around $13/each. The service is friendly and rather quick! They have two options of ayce bbq, also available regular Korean dishes. I think their price was pretty competitive, we could have unlimited Korean bbq includes rice, soups and side dishes in $29.99 or $24.95/person. If you're not starving, you can go with regular items starting from $10.95 available all day long. Our daughter had been to other Korean BBQ restaurants before, but it was the first time experience for my wife and I. Nice, clean place, it was pretty much empty when we went for dinner. The hostess spoke well, described the menu options (A= chicken, pork, beef, shrimp and squid, B= chicken and pork, we chose B as we do not eat beef or squid). She brought out the piping hot Miso soup and the garnish (sliced fresh jalapeno and garlic), you would need to wait at least 5 whole minutes to eat the soup in order to avoid a 3rd degree burn of your lips and tongue. Meats were of premium cuts, pork belly, boneless chicken thighs and marinated pork Bulgogi....all were marinated lightly, and were delectable. Loved the Kimchi and the spicy pickles.....nice and fresh. The only thing that we didn't care for was how the hostess was using the same tong for handling both the raw and cooked meat.....no concern of cross-contamination whatsoever. Mixed feelings, but ultimately disappointed from the experience. Review: I have always been an avid fan of Surah's ayce kbbq starting from its Lower Gwynedd Township location. However, I have been noticing a negative trend from its expansion starting from the 5th street Philadelphia location and now to the Upper Darby location. Meat To start, the meat quality, selections, and cuts vary greatly from each location. The Upper Darby location misses the mark in every aspect. Not only does it have the least amount of meat choices, the quality of meat and the way that it is cut leave you utterly disappointed. The biggest disappointment is the Marinated Beef Ribs (LA Galbi) that is exclusively available on Menu Option A ($30). For a party of four, a single order of Beef Ribs comes out with about 16 pieces of meat (on the bone) cut thinner than sushi. Typically, Galbi is cut into 1/4 or 1/2 inch slices for two reasons 1) to lock in the perfect amount of marinade and 2) to create the perfect texture/mouthfeel after it is cooked. Then it is marinated about 24 hours before it is served. However, the Galbi at this location conforms to none of the traditional requirements leaving one to regret the decision to have spent the extra money. The meat is cut so thinly that not only does it not hold any of the marinade's flavor, there is virtually no texture once you bite into it. The extra choices that come with Option A (Angus Steak, Marinated Angus Steak, Marinated Ribeye (bulgogi)) all were disappointing. In the end, IF I had to come back I would choose Option B and stick to the classics Pork Belly and Brisket. Interior The dining area is fairly small fitting about 7 or 8 tables max within a very close proximity to the entrance. This is a problem for a number of reasons. The construction of the dining space is fundamentally flawed for two reasons. First, the lack of ventilation for a korean bbq may be a health hazard. When there were only two tables barbecuing it was fine, but once the dining area filled up, the ventilation could not keep up and caused the entire area to be filled with smoke to the point where visibility changed and the ability to breathe changed. This leads to the second problem. Because of the lack of ventilation, the front door had to be propped open to let out the smoke which is a problem because it was about 30 degrees outside at night and the cold air reached you no matter where you were in the dining area. We ended up putting on our coats to eat korean bbq. Let that sink in. Parking ATROCIOUS. The main big parking lots for H-mart and the stores on the strip are located up on Fairfield Avenue. That means that, unless you are lucky enough to find one of the 10 open spots in front of the strip mall, you have to park and walk a fairly long distance to the restaurant which is not tiring but annoying when you are full from kbbq and the temperature outside is below freezing. FUN FACT: sometimes the parking meters dont function properly and only go up to 45 minutes MAX at a time. That means that you have to constantly go out every 30 minutes to fill the meter all the way up to the other end of the strip mall, cross the street, and into the parking lot and BACK! As an added bonus its freezing outside! Service Service was OK as waitresses are constantly walking around and it is a small location with few tables. The one thing that really annoyed me and made me want to get up and walk out was the way that they handle the grill plates. Usually at other KBBQ's and even at other Surah locations, when the grill plate burns (usually because of the marinade) the grill plate is entirely replaced with a new one. However, at this location they bring out some sort of paper towel or rag not sure what it is and they just wipe the burnt parts of the grill away IN FRONT OF YOU! Then after they are done wiping the grill in front of you, they then put the new meat right back onto the same grill and tell you to eat from it. All the while, the grill is still on and whatever they are using to clean the plate is burning off ONTO THE GRILL! DISGUSTING! Final Thoughts I may have lost years off of my life from this dining experience wasting time driving there, smoke inhalation, and consuming endless amounts of burned chemicals and agents. Was this experience worth dying for? NO! read more

I went here last weekend on a first date, and it was a good choice because we had plenty of time to sit and talk. It's All You Can Eat with two "tiers" of options fit meat. We went with the $25 option instead of the $30 option because we didn't think we needed the upgrade. There was an ample selection of meat in both, and plenty of pickles, condiments, sides, sauces, etc. The grills are electric so you don't get the smoke smell that comes with charcoal. Our server seemed to be the only one working but she was very efficient at bringing our order and water, and showing us how to cut up the meat when we weren't sure how to do it correctly. There is not a lot going on here in terms of decor or ambiance, but the food is solid and the experience was fun. Bonus, it's right next to H Mart and a short walk from 69th Street Terminal so people like me who live in the city can easily get here on the El. Metered parking is available outside the restaurant on the road, however on some nights it may be very hard to find parking. You are not welcomed at the door, but rather directed to find a seat. Surah is an all you can eat Korean BBQ restaurant which brings your portion upon request. You have the option to choose between 2 "all you can eat" menu options, the pricier containing a greater variety. Some of the distinct characteristics about the pricier option is the tofu soup, seafood, and angus steak. The portions come out relatively quickly, and you can begin to cook once you get it. They often will help customers cook their meat, but don't rely on them to solely do the work or your food may burn. A problem I tend to have however is specifically ordering the different steak options, as they often bring out meats which don't seem to match the description. You may order 1 of the 3 steak meat cuts, and get something different the next time you order it again. Beyond this, the meat quality is good and the marinades for the meat taste great. They also provide each customer with accompanying side dishes as well as sauces along with their orders. Will not be coming back to this establishment any time soon or at all. My family and I were greeted with extreme malice and prejudice by a waiter working the stoves and floor. The waitress initially told me since it was crowded a table would open up in a hour for my five person party including a hungry four year old and a baby. It is just sad because the waitress lied to my face on coming back after waiting a WHOLE HOUR with my hungry family saying a party had made a reservation of 7 before us and there were other tables we could have sat if she had cleared them.
