Hubby and I made reservations online to dine here on a whim on a Friday evening and I'm so glad we made reservations because the place was PACKED! My brother had already told me that the food was good but I wanted to experience for myself... We were seated inside almost in the middle of the restaurant and had a great view of the tv (on the night we visited, the 76ers were playing in the semi-finals, so our seating was PERFECT! We placed our order with the waiter - hush puppies, chicken waffle skewers, hubby ordered some kind of sandwich with pulled chicken and I ordered the BBQ Blackened Shrimp. The chicken and waffle skewers and hush puppies were the "stars" of our dining experience - the chicken was tender yet had a nice crunch and the skewer ingredients as a whole were savory and the hush puppies had well balanced flavor and the slight crispness of them was so satisfying. Hubby's sandwich was pretty good - the chicken was juicy and tender and his fries were nice and crispy and seasoned with precision. The BBQ Blackened Shrimp missed the mark for me - if I could do it again, I'd order this minus the bread. The bread was too much and was just odd for me but I enjoyed everything else that came with this dish... Overall, we left satisfied. I come here at least once a month, usually for takeout, but this time I decided to dine in. I always order the pork belly burnt ends, brisket, and ribs. The brisket is my favorite; it's always tender with just the right amount of fat. This time I ordered Brisket Fries and they were really good. Loaded with brisket and cheese. The staff is always super friendly. I did have one issue with the food once, not the service, and Ian, who I believe is the manager, immediately made it right. He was very kind and professional. Eh, hard to feel the high reviews based on my $90 takeout. I just returned from southern GA where the BBQ is excellent. Sophie's just doesn't do what they can do down there. Our family had the Smokehouse Trinity and The BBQ Platter, which together let us try brisket, chicken, pulled pork, ribs, mac n cheese, fries and cornbread. The philosophy seems to be more about pumping sugar into/onto everything than getting flavor in the meat. "Cornbread" is more of a corn poundcake with cinnamon bun drizzle. Yes, making cake and calling it bread feels like a decadent bread, but it's a marketed hybrid cake enabling you to get fat. Mac n cheese is very tasty. That said, it is made simple, from inexpensive noodles, cheese and butter. A lone side of it is $10 and if the lone side is the same as a regular side, it is very overpriced for the portion. My 7yo ate it by himself as a fraction of his dinner. Handcut fries were also tasty, but cut too thin for my liking because most were extremely crispy. I could have eaten a bag of potato chips for a close enough taste, and for far less money. I've said this in other BBQ reviews and I'll say it again, it's a faux pas to me to serve BBQ sauced. If your meat can stand alone, it's good BBQ. I don't like to add sauce (sugar) to my meat. Please don't assume I want 1000 calories dumped on my protein, and if you need sauce for flavor, the meat isn't good enough. Chicken was the best of the meats, IMO. I pulled the skin (and sauce) off and the meat was juicy and had the most amount of smoke that anything had. I will say it was not "smoky" compared to southern BBQ, but it had some smoke while the other meats didn't really have any. Ribs had an unpleasant chewy-hamy texture and tasted okay but again I was forced to eat sauce, and that didn't let me really taste the meat. The below meats actually did not come sauced: Pulled pork was okay. Not smoky, not bad per se, but not memorable either. Brisket bark had too much flavor and the meat had too little, so you needed the sauce to cover up the distracting contrast. Not worth the price for that. The taste of the sauce? Tasted like Diabetes. In comparison to parts of the country who perfect BBQ, Sophie's didn't hold their own. They did a lot that was tasty but the prices were steep compared to BBQ joints I frequent where they do it better, give you more, and charge less. read more

I may go as far as saying the smoked crispy wings with sweet BBQ sauce are the best wings I have ever had . The flavor, tenderness, crispiness, sauce, ..all complement each other so well. The brisket is cooked to perfection each time. Perfect amount of fat and the coffee rub is delicious . Typically we do takeout but have dined in a few times. The best part of the rib was that if you eat the rib plain, they had an excellent rub on it. I smothered them in sauce but again since the sauce was so sweet I didn't really enjoy them. Our wings were dry and not crispy as advertised. However, with that ranch sauce, I saw it through! Now, the MAC gave a burnt taste. It's as if they scorched the pot of macaroni while boiling then took the top layers off to save product. As we tasted it, my husband and kids mentioned it first then I tried and agreed. The collars were soulful but I prefer juice in mines. I'm not sure if the greens come dry if that makes sense. The greens were in a bowl but it's as if they poured the juice off of them. We had an amazing time coming here at an off peak time so we had excellent service and were able to customize the brussel sprouts a bit to meet our needs as we didn't want the spice. The burnt ends were probably the favorite over the spare ribs due to its nice glaze blended with the saltiness of the meat. We've been to Sophie's when it was in Ardmore. I was excited to see that they reopened in Havertown. They're located near Haverford High School on Darby Road. There's street parking. I'm glad I made reservations because it was crowded when we arrived at 12:30. I'm not sure of the woman's name who took care of us but I got the impression that she was one of the owners. She was friendly and welcoming. She gave us some good menu suggestions. We started with the Butterscotch Swirl Cornbread Basket that is served with an apple butter and some other butter. It was moist and delicious! More like dessert than an appetizer. We split the Brisket Cheesesteak which was very large so perfect for sharing. The brisket was very tender and the seeded roll was great. My husband said he would've preferred a sauce on there because he thought it seemed dry. My sons had the pork belly burnt ends and grilled shrimp cubano. They have Coke products. They also have alcoholic beverages but we didn't try them this time. The Brisket Cheesesteak was a fantastic take on the cheesesteak. Great smokey flavor & loaded with a ton of meat. Excellent I knew of Sophie's BBQ in Ardmore and wanted to try the new location for the last year. The new location now includes Four Birds Distilling Co spirits for craft cocktails. Also, there are canned cocktails and beer. It is a winning combination of delicious food and craft cocktails. This was a perfect place to have lunch after returning from the Eagles parade. The new location is a bright, open space of seating plus a bar seating. There are two large tvs that are perfect for watching sports. The cocktail menu has a great selection of craft cocktails, mocktails, canned cocktails and beer.. We ordered a cucumber mojito and a classic old-fashioned. The cucumber mojito (served in a mason jar) was refreshing and a combination of sweet and sour blended perfectly with the Four Winds rum. The classic old-fashioned is a must-have. It was mixed to perfection with Four Winds Bourbon, simple syrup, bitters, orange peel and luxardo cherry. Our entrees included hot honey chicken sandwich and the brisket cheesesteak. All sandwiches are served with handcut fries. The chicken sandwich is massive portion of crispy fried chicken, top with pimento cheese(who knew this absolutely delicious), candied bacon, honey hot house pickles. All of the toppings on the sandwich blends so well to get a flavor profile of savory, sweet, with a little heat. When meat is smoked it is sheer perfection. The brisket cheesesteak is topped with copper sharp cheese sauce and carmelized onions on a seeded roll. It is a slight twist on a traditional cheesesteak but the upgrade was worth every bite.
