We went for a cooking class, a holiday gift for my husband, in late February. We had a great time! The chef and assistants were very helpful, made it fun, and shared great tips. I know these classes aren't technique driven by any means, but I always come away with a few tips and tricks to apply in my own kitchen, and this was no different. Picked up a few tools to use as well. That being said, if you are looking for a start to finish class, where you prep and do ALL of it, this is not that - I know that is the goal for most people, but there are a few who want a true experience, this again, is more idea based. read more

Cooking Class- 1 Star* Retail Store - 5 stars ***** My husband and I took a date night cooking class yesterday, for the beef Wellington meal. I was very turned off by our experience. There was very little "hands on" interaction. The beef was pre-seared, the green beans were already cooked, we watched the desert get made. All we got to do is re-heat the green beans, mince garlic & parsley and wrap the Wellington in dough & suran wrap. The chef was nice, but he talked as if we were 5 year olds. Would have been better suited for children. Also not a great look when you tell us your previous job was being a barista at Starbucks and you got to this job because you wanted to train people. $100/ticket was a waste. I've taken two baking classes here (puff pastry and make-and-take Buche de Noel), both with the same chef. You will receive a coupon before your class; the day of class, the recipes will be emailed to you (if you're organized, print to take notes). You get 10% off on anything in-store the day of class, including more classes; and you might get a coupon afterwards. So I've never actually shopped here without getting a discount (new Nordicware pans? Silicone spatulas? sure!). An advantage to taking a class is there's actually parking early in the morning, though if you park close (on the street, in the lot across the way) you may need to move your car after class when there isn't. Unmetered street parking is available around the corner/block if you don't mind carrying your goodies that far. The baking classes, like those I've taken elsewhere, have you working in groups of 3 or 4, so you aren't doing everything 100% yourself. Wear comfortable shoes: you'll be standing the whole time. Ingredients are prepped and pre-portioned for you and trash whisked away; there's water and tea and you can get in one or two coffee orders (latte, espresso). Recipes were easy to understand and quite tasty; I felt confident I could make them myself. The buche class actually had each of us preparing our own individual cake, not working communally. The chef teaching it was stressed out, so it was much less relaxing (Corporate had not allocated prep time on the clock; had not sent any cake boards; boxes were not available in a proper size; the rosemary never arrived; the pre-prepped frozen buttercream separated and had to be coddled...). This is apparently the most complicated class they teach and while we all had a cake when we were done, we didn't get to make any of the decorations, though he walked us through them and sent us home with cranberries and sugar. The chef was helpful, the assistants cheerful, and the final product looked great (even for the folks who said "I don't bake") and was delicious. I purchased a scanpan about a year ago at this location. The coating on the top edge side started to come off. Went in to see if I could exchange it. Unfortunately they have a 30 day return policy on non Sur La Table cookware They said that I had to go through scanpan and not through them. You guys sell high end expensive cookware and don't stand behind the products you sell. This is unacceptable. Scanpan also rejected saying this is normal wear and tear. Wear and tear after 1 year??? The coating coming off the edge?? My suggestion is to not shop where they don't stand behind the products that they sell and do not buy scanpan cookware. It is not worth it. read more

Came in for a beef Wellington class day after Christmas. The kitchen is set up super cute. They offer coffee, water and self serve tea. This location does not allow you to BYOB because they do not have a liquor license. I do wish we were able to bring a bottle of wine for this meal. Your assigned to a table of four, so if you're not going with a party of four you will be cooking with two others. A lot of the prep is done for you. I do wish this class for the beef Wellington would have been an hour or more longer so we were able to do more because prep for this meal generally takes 4+ hours. Instructors were very nice. I do wish they would have cooked our welly a little longer because that thing was so rare it was almost still mooing. Will definitely take another class here but probably a different location that allows you to bring in a bottle of wine. They also do not allow you to bring your left over home so make sure you go in really hungry so nothing goes to waste. read more

Holy kitchen gadgets, browsing Sur La Table is a great time. They truly have some quality gear here and I have found so many neat tools I didn't know existed. As much as I'd like to say I come here often for myself, I'm usually popping in for a housewarming or wedding shower gift. I've gotten my friends wine glasses, cute bakeware, cheese boards, you name it. My in-laws gifted my husband and I a set of pretty fantastic non-stick baking sheets which have held up over the years. During the holidays they always have cute seasonal mugs, aprons, spatulas, etc. and I've purchased a few Christmas tree ornaments at SLT as well! Aside from all the cooking, dining, and bakeware, they also sell some specialty items in the very back - things like flavored oils, pastas, and sauces. I'm a big fan of infused olive oils and while they're pricier, it's definitely worth the splurge every now and then. Just last month I took a cooking class with my husband, his parents, and my brother and sister-in-law. It was a fun Christmas gift from my in-laws! The food was delicious and the class was a fun experience, but I will have to echo what other reviews have said. I wish every step was a little more hands on, and I wish we were cooking in groups of two as opposed to a table of 4. We were paired with family of course, but the other third of our party was partnered up with a couple strangers. I'm all about making new friends, but I think if we were working in pairs we'd get a lot more hands on cooking experience! Now, if we were allowed to BYOB that might make things a little more interesting. At least at that point we'd be able to enjoy a class of wine while someone else in the group was chopping some veggies ;) The staff here is always very helpful and friendly. TOO MANY COOKS IN THE KITCHEN Chef class makes for a fun date night, assuming you can play well with others. As part of a very thoughtful Christmas gift from my mom (cue the 'awwwww'), I was able to book a structured course with Nichole C on 4/19/19. Sur La Table's Naperville location offers a multitude of classes year-round and we finally found a date & time that worked for us. To celebrate spring's arrival, we chose "romantic seafood for two", priced at $79/person. This included a full meal and guided tutorial; other classes such as knife skills ($49) and French pastries ($69, giggity) rotate throughout the months. They even have family friendly options for the little ones, like pizza making. So what was on the intimate menu for the evening? We began with a shaved fennel salad, for which we made a lemon caper vinaigrette. From there, we whipped up a saffron risotto with peas & prosciutto. Everyone took turns stirring, which was entertaining (this is also critical for a creamy, successful risotto). The main attraction were large, seared sea scallops with a champagne beurre blanc. We wrapped things up making mini chocolate soufflés with a salted caramel sauce for dessert. They were kind enough to put out cheese & crackers for us; the roasted red pepper jam served with it was delicious! From start to finish, class lasted about 2-1/2 hours and you work in groups of four. That means you and your +1 will have to quickly make friends or risk getting randomly paired up. Usually that's not an issue, but every so often you'll get stuck with some prissy Miss or Mister Know-it-all who thinks they know better (cough *Yolanda* cough). Our instructor Kaylee was nice and kept her composure despite a few early flubs. She began the class by showing us the proper way to separate yolks & whites for the soufflé........then proceeded to break not just one but TWO eggs right off the bat, which doesn't exactly bode well towards a room full of 'students'. Sur La Table offers a 10% in-store discount for anyone attending a session. I bought a pastry brush ($9), set of silicon mini spatulas ($11) and a large skillet ($72) that will hopefully last forever. The stuff in here is high-quality cast iron cookware like Le Creuset (not cheap crap, meaning no Teflon pans in sight). * TL;DR * Class wasn't quite as hands-on as I would've liked. The kitchen tasks like zesting a lemon, mincing a shallot, making a rue, etc, were divvied up so that pretty much one person got to do only a few things. What if someone in your group is incompetent and accidentally obliterates the tomatoes? Are you sh*t out of luck?? For someone who's a kitchen newbie, Sur La Table's cooking classes might be the perfect combination of interactive learning and belly-filling fun. However, if you consider yourself at an intermediate or advanced level, you could wind up frustrated at having to split responsibilities. Oh, I almost forgot: we had to eat our dinner standing up, since the prep tables double as eating surfaces and there's no room for chairs. Hopefully you don't get stuck with someone that's clueless or doesn't want to share the communal space. Much like Williams Sonoma, the kitchenwares at SLT are expensive but last a lifetime. HORRIBLE! THEY STEAL YOUR MONEY! My parents booked a cooking class here but couldn't go because my dad end up getting COVID. When they called to explain the situation management was very understanding, thanked them for not coming in sick and told them they could use the tickets as a credit for another class. When my parents tried to book an upcoming class for their anniversary they were told they don't have any record that they contacted the store to cancel the order so their cancellation policy stands. It is NOT my parents problem the the management here is so unorganized that they don't have records of this cancellation. I was present for the phone call and heard, with my own ears, the management say they could use a credit another time. Shame on you, Sur La Table, for taking advantage of people, especially the elderly. Take your business elsewhere if looking for a fun cooking class. Plenty of small business owners need support and offer better classes with GOOD customer service. read more

I've taken two cooking classes here with my family and enjoyed the food. The recipes were very good and quality of food and cookware was great. This last time my husband and i brought our two adult children whom we almost never get to see thinking this would be a great way for the family to spend time together. Spoiler alert: If you're looking for a fun group outing, this is NOT it. Both times the head chefs were snarky, impatient, and condescending. (Think Chef Ramsey without the cursing) For the money you pay (almost $400 for four people) for these classes you'd think they'd be encouraged to show better customer service, or at the very minimum some patience and kindness. The retail store is cute and the staff there is very friendly. However, save your money and cook your dinner at home. Better yet go across the alley to Hugo's, It will be a much more positive, less expensive experience, you won't get yelled at and you won't have to cook your own food. read more

Karla proceeded to loudly, very loudly, shout rules and instructions at us. Felt like I was in junior high gym class. It ruined what was supposed to be a nice " date night cooking class." She scolded class members who asked questions for not listening. The room is set up so it is hard to see the instructors. Maybe teacher in the middle?? The menu was ambitious in terms of prep/ chopping leaving us trying to eat while moving on with the next course & trying to follow new directions. We ended up with little time to eat, the work stations were cluttered with prep items while we tried to eat and the whole thing was rushed and messy. We ended up leaving so much food behind. The woman at the store said they offer once-a-week $5 demo classes where the $5 gets donated to a local charity. - The $3000+ espresso machines that you can get free mini cups of cappuccino, espresso, etc from. Bonus- they have flavored syrups too so you can make it as sweet as you'd like. Forget Starbucks. - The ice cream machines. On our visit they were making fresh strawberry ice cream with real-deal strawberries for customers to sample. - The staff were super friendly and practically insisted we try the coffee and other treats they were making, even though it was fairly obvious that there was no way in hell I'd ever be able to afford a luxury latte machine like that for myself. They even let me press the button. I felt like King Midas. I checked out a few items that I could probably really use but am too cheap to buy like a can opener, pot holders, and brush for scrubbing dishes and they didn't seem *that* pricey, but I also have no frame of reference as to what those items would cost from somewhere else and I feel that's important to mention. I was given a gift certificate to take one of their "date night" cooking classes with my honey. As a culinary teacher, I can say that you always have something more to learn. They had refreshments and a cheese plate for us to enjoy throughout the cooking process. Each step was clearing explained to us before we had to go and complete the task. You cook in a group of four so everyone helps make the recipes and shares the food. It's always more fun when everyone has a turn so the teacher in me made sure that everyone in my table was involved. Menu was delicious! Herb rubbed pork tenderloin with balsamic glaze, potato pancakes with salmon topping, roasted brussel sprouts with hazelnuts, and a chocolate ganache pie with a cookie crust. Everything was delicious. You're encouraged to shop around the store while everything is finishing in the oven. (10% off your purchases!) One complaint is that they don't have chairs for you to sit down and enjoy everything you made - you eat standing up. Though it is very fun to learn and prepare new things - be aware that the serving sizes are not huge and it will be approximately 90-120 minutes before it is eating time. They also only allow BYOB alcohol at private events. They are working on getting a liquor license. read more

While the chef and the instruction was spot on, we were all very disappointed that you are not able to take the food you prepare to go. One of the people in our party didn't eat meat. Granted, he knew what he was going into for the class and that he wouldn't eat it, but I think we all assumed we would be able to take home the leftovers....$80 per person to shovel in your food in 20 mins while standing up around your table, seems a little ridiculous. Last weekend we attended our first cooking class. I hadn't read reviews before attending and honestly I'm glad I didn't. Although my feeling are mutual in the fact that there isn't as much hands on work as I had anticipated or wanted , I still learned a lot and it made for a great, unique date night. I was in a rush to buy something nice and affordable for a friend for a housewarming dinner, and I was able to get in and out super quickly. I struggled with choosing something simply because there were SO many nice things, and the sales associate helped me find some nice things within my price range. In the cooking class, I inquired about the Kitchen Aid that was on clearance. As I walked back to see the mixer on the shelf, it wasn't there anymore. Another saleslady ended up selling the mixer with some lady on the phone. Final story, they ended up giving it to a lady on the phone and she was not physically in store and I was right there ready to pay with a credit card. The sale lady should have put the mixer on the side for me and she didn't since I inquired about it. There was miscommunication with the staff. Not good customer service at this specific location. I have not yet been to the other locations. I won't return to this location since they messed up. Would not recommend this location for poor customer service. read more

We had taken a Perfect Pasta for Two class before, where we had lots of salad and pasta and couldn't even finish it all! For the Global Street Foods class, we barely had enough food for everyone to have a bite! The portions were so small, and the plates were empty within seconds. We should have made so much more samosa dough to accommodate all the filling we had for them. Attendees had less than two ounces of chicken each on a skewer. We left the class hungry and with quite a bit of disappointment this time around. It's even more frustrating since the class wasn't completely full!!! (It had 3 spots left online.) Then, zut alors, I threw caution to the wind when I spied the French dessert plates. I am having French desserts at book club! I walked away and selected a wee little whisk for renewing the vinaigrette I am going to make in my new shaker bottle, using the olive oil I had also picked up. Cindy, the friendly and knowledgeable clerk was enabling me! She cleverly started a pile for me at the register. Then I circled back to check on the cunning plates that I obviously wasn't going to buy. Duh, I was just looking at them. The rest is a blur, somehow they ended up in my pile and I walked out with not one but two shopping bags full of things I NEEDED. However, as I explained to my husband, I will use these adorable plates all the time! Don't you agree? Come on, help me out here. In fact would you like to come over for dessert? This isn't a regular spot for me. But my dad is a great cook. I wanted to get him something special to add to his top notch kitchen. I did check out the website first, so I knew what I was looking for. I'm sure I walked in there looking like a dear in the headlights. I put my head down and went to grab what I came for. I was about to go pay and leave when a friendly sales associate offered to take what I was holding and offered me a cappuccino. Why, yes. that Himalayan Salt Slab was feeling a little heavy. And a cappuccino did sound nice...Oh and maybe a biscotti for the kids? So I was shown to the fancy coffee bar. The sales associate showed me the coffee makers with all the bells and whistles. Suddenly I could have a fancy coffee bar in my own kitchen. It could be so easy, even I could do it! And that is how I nearly spent $3000 on a new coffee maker. But while I enjoyed my perfectly made cappuccino, found a lot to love about this store. There are little goodies everywhere. They have a great sale area. The sales people are helpful but non intrusive. I can't say when I'll be back, but I prefer Sur La Table to William Sonoma anyday. read more

They all take the time to answer every-ones questions even if you have several of them. Classes do tend to get a bit hectic when they are full, but are still very enjoyable. Cooking Classes 2 Stars - The Cooking class I took was a huge disappointment. They advertised the class as hands on. What that really mean is that you have to share cooking the menu with 8-10 other people, so you actually only get to cook one small piece of the menu. I also like a class with more structure. The instruction was also lacking. Store is 4 Stars - If you are addicted to kitchen gadgets this is the store for you. They have a huge selection of kitchen items and the largest cookie cutter selection I've ever seen. They offer hands-on cooking classes several times a week that vary in price from $70 to $100 per class. The customer service lacks a bit and the prices are on the high side. Terrible service at Sur La Table. We've been decade long customers and have both shopped and taken cooking classes here. I bought two online classes for my husband's birthday and they cancelled one of them without even informing us... no call, no email as verified by customer service. They let us go out and buy $50 worth of ingredients which will now go to waste as they were specialty items for an Indian dish. We had to find out it was cancelled on our own. Customer service was useless. They never refunded our money. What a scam. This is supposed to be high-end store, very disappointing. You've lost customers for life. read more

Sur La Table is one of those greatly disappointing stores. It's good for ideas, but not the best place to buy what you want. They tend to cater to the mid to upper range for shoppers and items, and plenty of what you will find here is the pricier option instead of a wider realm from low to high. I hate to say it, but a lot of the people in there seem to be the pretentious sort who install high-end appliances in their kitchens and then want the full 16 piece set of pots and pans to match, although they never really use it. For the several times I've gone in searching for things mentioned on their site, or a bit more specialized, I have had an almost 100% failure rate for locating it, or getting the advertised price. Emily C. is right in that much of this can be purchased online far cheaper. I was looking at a tea infuser they had for $20; the same thing online from multiple sources was $8-12. The markup I accept is there, but it's quite expensive. I also have to say service is much below what I would expect. Really snooty, and that was rather unfair. read more

Ok, I see a thread - attitude bothers me but really I buy in stores for the service, you can get things cheaper online. I wanted a full Le Creuset set, the pans, the pots, the little pepper shaped baking dish, etc. This is not cheap enamel cookware - what did I get? Attitude, and I left without my miniature garlic shaped garlic roaster. The pieces are pricey and they don't cook the food alone and talk so I expect friendly service with a smile. The teacher was patient with the class and taught us many techniques, including knife skills. After watching the demo, we were given a station to work at with another couple. The portions of the meal were plenty, as you eat everything you make! We prepared seared duck breast with a wine/shallot sauce and created the most delicious salad with beets and hazelnut dressing. Of course, we ended the lesson with a creme brûlée. When it comes time for me to take another cooking class, I will be attending one at Sur La Table. They have many to choose from. read more
