I always associate Supermacs with going down 'the country' and this could have something to do with our bus driver's preference for stopping at the branch in Moate on our annual trips to the Gaeltacht. Whatever the reason, it feels a bit strange to pop into the branch in Dublin and I get the distinct impression that there's a higher proportion of rural lads and lassies here than in any other fast food joint in town. Somebody should do a study on it. Supermacs really tries to be all things to all people - pizza, ice-cream, sandwiches, muffins, burgers, chips, sundaes, smoothies - it will stop at nothing to serve you all possible food genres, perhaps that's why it's called SUPERmacs! Superhero status would be cemented for Supermacs if they could prove their website's bold claim that they were the 'pioneers' of Irish 'delicacies' like curry chips and the snack box. A very bold claim indeed Supermacs!

Yer man, enjoying his Supermac's

Ahhhhhh Supermac's! Both the bane and the brine of my Irish experience, Supermac's has, like an old friend, always been there for me, no matter how badly I treat it. And usually it's pretty badly... I only ever catch up with this friend when rottenly drunk, but up until now, that hasn't completely destroyed our relationship (phew!) It has been often that I have introduced the gourmet delights of Supermac's to a Supermac's virgin... and there's no better way to strike up a lifelong Supermac's friendship than with a hearty serving of taco fries at 3am! Supermac's was a huge feature of my time in Galway, and every time I go back, I have to make an early morning visit to my fave restaurant. A trip to Supermac's can often be the source of unexpected high-calibre entertainment. Just last week my friends and I were transfixed by a certain drunken Supermac's devotee who enjoyed his meal so much that he went fishing around on the floor for the fries he'd accidentally knocked off his plate. We stared in awe as he picked up every single one of them and proceeded to put them in his mouth... fascinating stuff!! So there you have it... Supermac's will always be there for you, no matter how drunk or sober you are (but I recommend you be drunk, it tastes soooo much better that way). Supermac's sure ain't no fair weather friend. I must say I'm a bit of an under-the-weather friend in return, however...

I won't hear a bad word be said about Supermacs. As a country person I was pretty much reared on this stuff. This was our McDonalds, our Burger King and our KFC all rolled into one. We thought Supermacs was the holy grail of fast food - simply because we didn't know any better. We didn't have anything else, not even some random chippers! I am pretty much addicted to their curry sauce and their chicken burgers are YUM. I've only eaten in the Dublin branch a couple of times. To me, it's not the full experience unless you're down the sticks.

Is that ok?

OMG! I do not tend to go to fast food places often but after a late night out my friends were starving and decided to go to this branch as it is open til late on weekends catering for club goers. I was not expecting much, only the basic really, and I saw much worse. A few things can get out of hand in a Dublin night out so it is normal to see many drunk lads and big queues. The workers looked exhausted and I do imagine they really were, to be fair, as it was a rowdy night. It is normal to wait for a while, also if so many people are ordering at the same time and for me all that is pretty reasonable. There was no place whatsoever to sit downstairs so we went up the steps. And wowowow! I never had seen such a messy and dirty "place where people eat". I can only figure that on weekend nights the staff don't have time to clean up the tables and change the bin bags, so the vision was of hell on earth. The food did not look amazing and the chips were not good in my opinion, soggy and under cooked. Maybe the place can do better with the pizzas as they have good combos and deals and in a week day when hopefully it gets tidied up.

Cajun Chicken Sub - cajun chicken strips, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, mayo on white (small size)

My boyfriend and I needed a quick bite to eat on our way to tour the Dublin Castle and wound up eating here. Since we are American, we really didn't want to go to any of the chain restaurants that are in the US which surprisingly were everywhere! Subway, Papa John's, Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks, etc. were on every other block. Weird! Atmosphere: 80's Diner style; red and white checks, retro red leather seats and high tops with stools. We did sit down to eat at the restaurant but you can get food to go. The place really wasn't very clean. The tables could've used a good wipe down and the trash could've been taken out about 30 minutes ago. It was similar to a McDonalds atmosphere. The lighting was bright because there were so many windows. Noise wise, average. Service: The staff here basically seemed like they hated their life and would rather be anywhere else in the world. They weren't mean or rude or anything, they just had no spunk and didn't go out of their way to provide top customer service. We didn't have to wait in a long line and they prepared our food very quickly, so I can't complain about that. They really should try to smile once in awhile though. I dunno, maybe we caught them on a bad day. Food: Meh. It wasn't awful, but nothing out of this world either. They had 3 new salads they were promoting so I decided to try the Chicken Pesto Salad which has chicken, black olives, red onions, semi-dried tomatoes, shaved parmesan, and a pesto/oil dressing. It was nice to try something different but the proportions of stuff seemed off to me. Decent amount of chicken, WAY too many black olives, not enough semi sun-dried tomatoes and red onions, and more cheese then necessary. I think they could've gone a little lighter on the dressing as well. Oh, and maybe add something crunchy into the salad like croutons or those little pita crisps. The ingredients all seems fresh though, which is definitely important! My boyfriend said his sub was pretty good. They toasted it which made the bread crispy and the cheddar cheese was nice and melted. He got the Cajun Chicken which had cajun chicken strips, cheddar cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. It was basically like eating a sub from subway back home in the US he says. Cost: It's fast food, so it was pretty cheap. For my salad and my boyfriend's sub it was 12 euros. You can get combo for a cheaper meal with a sub, crisps, and a drink or sub, cookie, and a drink. I don't think any menu item was more than 8 euros. So, if you aren't looking to provide your tastebuds with some incredible new tastes or scents, this place may be for you. Also, if you are visiting from the US and looking for something similar to a subway. We really just came here for some fuel. I wouldn't really recommend this place to anyone, but if someone asked me if the food was okay, I would say yeah, it's pretty alright, just nothing special. It is fast food though, so you can't really be expecting anything gourmet....

It's always nice to have a snack box while waiting on your pizza.

During our research before we left we saw a video talking about Bunsen. Just seeing the high quality of the ingredients made it one of our must try stops in Dublin. As we do when traveling, we start and end the day eating throughout the day. We popped into Bunsen to finally try the legendary burger around 4:30 pm. Because we were there at such an odd hour, we were the only people there. When you visit Ireland, the pub culture is real and most pubs start to get quite busy around 5:30 pm. Since Bunsen isn't a pub and wasn't located in a particularly touristy area , it didn't surprise me they were empty at that time of day. What stuck out the most at first was the super friendly service right from the door. We were sat at a small banquet of tables against the wall and checked out the menu from QR code link on the table. We were there for their original burger so that is what we ordered. No sides and water to drink. I couldn't be filling up too much yet. It was pretty early after all and we had a lot of places to stop yet. The menu isn't huge. They focus on doing one thing well and keep it at that. I like a restaurant that doesn't try to be everything. Our burger came out within 10 min and it was juicy, hot and fresh. Presented beautifully wrapped. We shared this one burger because, we knew we had lots of food to eat later. Immediately after eating the last bite I wanted to order another. It was really that good. Such perfection! This will be the burger I compare all others in Ireland to.

Casual decor, open kitchen and beer fridge, lighting was on the dim side. Had a Pitburger pilsner beer. Although a bottle beer, it was very crisp, malty, clean, and a bit sweet, very suitable summer drink. Also had a Southern fried chicken burger. Chicken was fried very nicely, the crust was crispy but not overly hard, inside was juicy and piping hot fiber, nicely seasoned with a bit of spices, went very well wtih the fresh veggies and sauce in the burger. The buns were soft and warm, though I might want it toasted a bit more. Also the price might be slightly on the high side (€11.95) for a standard size burger. Nonetheless, taste matters the most.

The restaurant is quite small and there are long tables that they seat parties together at. We had to squeeze in the middle which was fine just a bit hot and cramped. The chicken was well seasoned on the burgers but the bun was wayyy too much bread, could use a different bun we think. They do offer everything in a bowl which is nice so would probably do that rather. The onion rings were also super good. Guessing the man working the room was the owner as he seemed invested and seemed to know some of the customers. All in all good food and we'd give it another go.

With vegetarians and other conservative eaters in our party, we found this place a godsend for a midafternoon pre-Trinity-College-sightseeing meal. Actually, it's pretty good on its own merits. I've eaten at other Counters and I like the setup...but there are too many choices! Patty, bun, cheese, toppings, and sauce. So many options! But if you enjoy culinary creativity and/or control, you will not go wrong here. The sides are good too, except that they were out of fried pickles. Sad face. We enjoyed regular fries, sweet potato fries, and grilled vegetables. Everyone enjoyed their burgers, so the meal was a success. Ironically, The Counter has table service, so it's not quite as quick as you might hope. But their sodas are from a fountain (yay, American style) so you can get refills. Plus, a bonus--their soundtrack of classic rock and respectable 80s and 90s tunes inspired at least four individuals in our multigenerational group to sing at various times. Clearly, they are all about variety.

Giant bottle of Staropramen for a good price rounded out the positives attributes of my meal. Hubs' sweet potato fries were the 2nd best I've ever had (after the defunct 501 Club in Minneapolis). Unfortunately the rest of the meal was overrun with immense amounts of oil. My burger bun arrived. It was the color yellow and the consistency of a soggy sponge. That means somebody dipped it in Golden-Flo cooking oil before crisping it back up. Yes, it tastes delightful...the same way deep-fried Twinkies taste delightful. The guilt of eating it manages to cancel out the enjoyment. Also ruined by oil were the onion STRINGS. Confession: I thought they were onion rings. With just an 'R'. I was duped and disappointed when the STRings arrived looking all skinny and limp. Sure, they were promisingly covered in tasty batter...but as soon as I grabbed the first one, the underneath strings crunched the pile, which subsequently disintegrated into an oily pile of fried dough and stringy onion film on the plate. Not cool. The oil-to-food ratio ended up leaving me with hours of tummy feelings the equivalent to a brick buried in a pit thrown into a black hole. Had to take a dinner coma nap on the couch when I got home. Oh and I am from California so I am allowed to say this: For a California-based and California-themed restaurant, it feels nothing like California. This place feels vapid and sterile and I would never call California sterile. Vapid, maybe. Not sterile.

I like my steaks medium rare but I always insist on a well-done burger for hygiene reasons which, in fairness, this was. My companion had ordered hers medium but it looked very much on the rare side to both of us but she was happy enough. Frankly, I thought it was all pretty meh. Nothing memorable or good enough to drag me back. The burger bun did maintain structural integrity throughout the process which was a plus but the whole thing was decidedly only ok. It was cheap, however, so there's that. Apparently, they have long waits at busy times. No idea why and I'd be furious if I had had to wait in line for a mediocre burger.
