I used to live in Mexico, and would eat all sorts of food products available in Mexico that are especially rare to find in the United States; like tortillas, chiles, beans, and cheeses, yet somehow with the experience the chefs have gained throughout their cooking lives in Latin America and the US they are able to create dishes with American ingredients that taste as if you were in a latin country. It's a powerful experience eating here. The pupusas are so soft and full of flavor and nutrition, and topped with their curtido, or slaw that accompanies many of their dishes, and salsa will make tears roll down your face because you feel as if you aren't physically in the country, you feel transported, like your body is meant for eating. I forget about everything eating this food. Every item on their menu is delicious, truly, and there is not one thing in the restaurant that is not made from scratch. Try their pastries, too! I believe this is the best Latin food I have eaten in Washington state. Not all Latin American cuisine restaurants put their soul into their food like this restaurant. Wonder Burritos are fantastic! Way more interesting and fresh taste than your average burrito.

More like 3.5 stars. I would eat here again if I'm in Bellingham but the food didn't rock my world or anything. I had a bean/cheese pupas, a chicken taco minus cilantro, and oh, that's it. Good thing for the cabbage slaw they gave. It was filling enough since I had just come from my complimentary motel breakfast, but I probably would've wanted more food had it been regular lunch hour. The pupas was good. It came out hot and fresh..with the filling all melted and mixed together, which, somehow I did not expect. The chicken was a bit dry in my tacos but adding some sauce helped with that. I couldn't figure out what was in the yellow bottle.. oil? Did it have any flavor? I liked how they had all these fashion magazines for patrons to peruse. And that's how I killed time before going to a post-wedding BBQ in La Conner. Oh yea, bought two pastries for later and I would recommend the apple turnover. Flaky crust, delicious filling. read more

Tacos = Awesome. Wonder Burrito = Awesome. Papusas = Awesome. Super Mario's is fairly priced, family-owned and seriously delicious. Their pork taco plate is fantastic, and the wonder burrito is truly one of the best burritos in town. At their NW Ave. shop they have a bakery on-side (which I have not yet tried) that has sweet and savory pastries. Their food truck is in an odd spot of downtown, near the Grocery Outlet, and it is open until 9pm on weeknights! read more

First off, this places appearance is borderline ridiculous. The lamps above the table still have the $6.99 price tags on them and there are paintings of 19th century France on the walls (???). My boyfriend and I were the only customers there at noon on a Friday. The girl at the counter took our order and we sat down. Since we were the ONLY ones there I would have expected a short wait but food took 17 minutes to get to us. That's not even the worst part - we could clearly hear a microwave being used in the kitchen. Are you kidding me?! When the food finally came there was no moisture to any of it - meat and cheese and tortillas all dried out from the microwave use. I wouldn't come back if you paid me. read more

I love Super Marios. The Wonder Burrito is my jam. It's always been well done and I love the flavors. This isn't Mexican food and so it's familiar (it's a burrito after all) but it's Salvadorian and so it's something new and exciting. The Papusas are also crazy good. Fantastic flavors and textures. But otherwise it seems like the rest of the menu is standard Mexican fare. Give me more El Salvador and this place could be amazing. But for now it's just borderline awesome. I cannot understand all the positive reviews of Super Mario's. We went there after hearing some great reviews about their food truck. We waited a long long time for our food. I had ordered pupusas and a plate with 3 of them and a cabbage garnish was placed in front of me. The pupusas weren't anything special and they were a bit runny inside. I thought the food was overpriced for what you get and the food wasn't even that tasty. I also noticed that there was 1 squirt bottle of hot sauce for the whole restaurant and there were 2 tables playing tug of war with it. This seemed really odd and pathetic. How could they only have one for everybody to share? Maybe we'll try the truck sometime, but we won't return to the restaurant. It was so-so food and overpriced. Maybe we're spoiled, as we've made our own pupusas, but these were glaringly different, and not in a good way. read more

A few caveats. I've never had the pupusas, and the finer points of Salvadorian cuisine are entirely lost on me. Cool? Good. If I were the pharaoh and had the opportunity to be buried with one Bellingham eatery, this would be it. If I were president, and I could hire a chef specifically for burritos, I'd call up Super Mario's. And probably just fire the rest of the chefs at the White House. The food I've had is as good as it gets in Bellingham. The price is right. They're quick and courteous. What more can you ask from a food cart? Eat here. read more

My wife and I had dinner here on Mon and once again went away happy. We got a steak Torta sooo tasty! They season the steak to perfection here. Good bread that they baked there. We also got an order of bean, cheese and pork Pupusas boy are those good. The owner is such a nice lady and took care of us! We finished with the pineapple cake and a custard pastry. These were both good but are need maybe 1 or 2 minutes less cooking. I have never had a bad meal here or their truck. read more

Food was a three. Ambiance was a two. We were excited to stop here on our way to Seattle based on the great Yelp reviews. After eating here, we left pretty disappointed in our fellow Yelpers for leading us astray. The restaurant sat in a strip mall. It was a Monday at 12:30 and we were the only ones there. Overall, the restaurant was clean, but I did notice a few ants on the counter and crawling on the soda fountain. The place was so quiet that it felt as though we had to whisper the whole time. Some music would have been a nice touch. We only saw one employee the entire time. She was behind the counter and she served us as well. She maybe said a few words to us the whole time we were there. I ordered the Wonder burrito plate with chicken for $7.99. The plate just indicates the burrito is served with beans and rice. It's $1 extra for the plate rather than just the burrito. My husband ordered the wonder burrito, asada plate with four tacos. The tacos were served with lemons instead of limes which we had never seen before. Our daughter had a cheese quesadilla. The burrito was a large portion, but I was immediately disappointed with how dry it was. I might as well have just ordered a rice burrito. It was mostly filled with rice and an occasional chunk of chicken would pop up. There definitely needed to be more meat. Towards the center of the burrito, there was some moisture coming from a sauce. The cilantro added quite a bit of freshness. The beans were alright, nothing to write home about. They were cooked with what appeared to be green peppers. My daughter ended up eating my side of rice. Bellingham has better options. We likely won't be back. read more

When I have the time, and a HUGE appetite, Super Mario's taco truck is among my favorite places in the World. I am a big fan of legit Mexican food, and Super Mario's is as legit as it gets, except that it's Salvadorian, not Mexican. Always fresh, made on-the-spot, the food here is absolutely fantastic, which explains why lines of people will stand around waiting for it under the hottest sun and the most driving rain. It's worth it. They have my favorite salsa. It's hot, REAL hot, but the burn hurts SO good! Owned and operated by immigrants from (you guessed it) El Salvador, Super Mario's fresh, unique flavors are truly amazing. Don't forget to leave a little extra cash in the jar for the kids back home. This place is great! Got the Mondo Burrito (vegetarian style) the girl at the counter was very cheerful and knew the menu well off the top of her head. It's always nice when you ask what is in something and the response is clear rather than lots of umms and turning to look at the picture and guessing. The red sauce on the table was an excellent addition. (Not too spicy) Two huge burritos and two drinks for just under $20. More than satisfactory. Very clean restaurant. Five stars. read more

Oh Super Marios, you've got me hooked. Seriously, when the wonder burritos are good they are like crack. Unfortunately, sometimes they're not so good, and sometimes they take 40 minutes. After some hickups, the restaurant location seems fairly on track, but occasionally they just mess up and it's no good. Mostly however, the food is fantastic and quick. As others have mentioned, the pupusas are also pretty fantastic. Mario himself is a great guy and the restaurant always runs better when he's around, but unfortunately he's not always around. read more

Super Marios cooks excellent El Salvadorian food that is head and shoulders above any other taco truck in town. The food is slow to come out, but worth every second. There are certain things I look for when I am going to pay someone to cook my food. First, it has to be something I cannot recreate at home no matter how hard I try. This place fills that requirement right off the bat. If you find a way to recreate the wonder of the wonder burrito at home, please let me know because you are a genius. Second, it has to be an unpretentious and easy dining experience, and containing some element of culture I can't find elsewhere. From the duct tape on the wall menu to the El Salvador napkin holders, this place has that for sure. I tried to tell the wonderful woman in the kitchen how much I loved her food, but I quickly discovered she didn't understand much English. If you want something simple, delicious, inexpensive, and easy to sit down and eat at even it's one of those days that you don't feel like changing out of your PJ's, this is the spot for you. And you get the added entertainment of watching the crazy train of people going in and out of that weird bar in the corner of the shopping center. read more

Man...this place used to be the best option in Bellingham for burritos once upon a time. Not anymore. All the signs of a business in decline. Bland burrito totally devoid of the fresh avocado, well seasoned meat, and spice that used to make them stand out; mainly filled with cabbage and over cooked rice. Just really boring food that's about a 1/3 smaller than most places for $1.50 more at this point. Boo Mario. Skip this one. read more

Super Mario's is my favorite burrito place in Bellingham. I have been there more times than I would like to admit, but not as much recently since I don't live there anymore. I have pretty much only had Wonder Burritos there. After eating a Wonder Burrito, I can't get myself to order anything else when I am there-- they are so good. I have sampled some other menu items when my guests order them, but Super Mario's is all about the Wonder Burrito. They have a few different sauces of varying spiciness to go with them: get a bottle of sauce in one hand and a burrito in the other and you are good to go. The baked goods and flan are also tasty and cheap. I dock one star because sometimes I get a burrito that is smaller / not as good as usual, but that doesn't happen too often. read more

after years of going to the super marios truck, i stopped into the actual restaurant tonight. they were open until 9 on sunday, which is a major plus for places in bellingham. the menu here is much smaller than the truck, and for me it was trickier to et exactly what i want. i ended up with a classic chicken burrito. i was hoping it would have chicken, beans, cheese, and rice. but there was no cheese!!! no magic super mario cheese?! it also had cilantro, onions, cabbage, sour cream and guac. delicious, and i dont mind veggies, but i prefer the option to regulate the amount of veggies that enter my system. nonetheless, it was still the size of my head with yummy salsa. i also definitely ended up spending more here than i would at the truck, and was less impressed with the food (unexpected cabbage? ack!) the place would be a three star compared to the truck (i love a la cart papusas!) but they have pastries! sweet, delicious, prettylilpastries filled with guava, apple, raspberry, or pineapple (i tried apple and raspberry). and they are freakin delicious. totally worth adding a star to the review and maybe even venturing off the beaten path (and the super mario taco truck) for some yummy burritos+postres. but first i think i will have to study the menu to selectively find exactly the foods i want, something ive never worried about at the truck read more

Pupusas and guacamole. If you haven't tried them together you should. The wonder burrito is legendary and the tacos are excellent. I'm not sure how Salvadorian tacos are different from Mexican ones. I can just tell you that they're good. I read the reviews of some of the other folks that came here and I gotta tell you I don't understand some people. No, this place does not have fantastic ambiance. They started out with a taco truck and now have their first permanent location in a strip mall. Good on them. They do not have stuffed parrots and a Mariachi band to entertain you while you sip your Margarita through a straw. And if you find your burrito dry, that's because you need to put some goddamn salsa on it. That's what the salsa is for. So choose which salsa you like and put it on the goddamn burrito. I'm not a huge fan of the daughter glued to her smart phone while I'm ordering and staying glued to it even after they ring the bell for order up. I've had to go to the counter and stare at the orders and wait for her to realize that she is standing in a restaurant and I am a customer and she is the only thing standing between me and two plates of delicious food. It'd be a much better system to take her out of the equation all together and I can yell my order back to the kitchen and then get it at the window myself. I'd get my food faster. So yes, this is a nicer version of a taco van. It's authentic. If you can dig on that, you'll have a good time here. read more

I've eaten at Super Marios twice while visiting family in Bellingham and really enjoy their pupusas and burritos. They also have a vegetarian relleno with cauliflower that's pretty darn good. The service is quirky, it takes a long time to prepare (we get it to go), and the restaurant doesn't have much atmosphere. They have a "quesadilla bread" that's a yummy sweet bread. Red sauce divine. Be sure to check your order.. they tend to forget stuff. NOTE: there is also a wonderful Vietnamese restaurant in the same center. read more

We got taquitos, fajitas and their "famous" wonder burrito. Ever heard of salt? Their chips were good, that's it. Even the guac wasn't seasoned with lime, salt or pepper. We went in on a Saturday and it was slow, even more surprising why there were dirty dishes and food everywhere. The cashier didn't even want to talk to us. Very disappointed. read more

We never got around to trying the original Super Mario's truck parked on Forest St but did make the drive to Northwest Ave to sample the cooking at his new restaurant. It's a very nice, clean and tidy place situated in a non-descript strip mall. I think that it is too bad that Mario was unable to get a place more in the downtown but the food is easily good enough to lure people off of the beaten path. I had the wonder burrito and it was excellent. This enormous burrito is probably the heaviest you will encounter in these parts - come hungry, it's a lot to eat. Next time I go I will defer to Mario's recommendations rather than my limited, burrito view of the world. The restaurant specializes in Salvadoran cuisine and I look forward to tasting my way through their menu. read more
