Apparently we were online shopping looking at last years model of bindings. The worker went to the back to bring options (displayed white or black). Next thing you know he pulls out exactly what we were looking for and he was so excited to see our reactions. On TOP of that, he threw us a discount. What an amazing first impression by this shop. I went in this morning looking for boots. I had always rented equipment from the ski resort prior to today. Decided it was time to buy boots that truly fit me. When I got there, Dennis opened early to help me. He spent over 2 hours helping me find the perfect boots. Ended up buying a complete set up and couldn't be happier. Very nice staff. Rentals are always easy there. Prices are good for ski rentals. Everything else is very expensive. I don't mind paying more to keep supporting a local business. But if you need to save money not a great option. Unfortunately they don't take COVID19 protocols seriously. Some staff don't wear masks at all. They don't enforce mask wearing in their store. Dropped off my snowboard to get it waxed and they never called me to tell me it's ready, I had to call and ask them if it was ready and guess what, It was. When I got home I looked at my snowboard and they damaged it!! Can't tell much in the pictures but the top part looks like it was cut and it's peeling from the surface. read more

This is the only ski shop that I could find in the valley...but this one was so amazing I will go here for the rest of my life. They are very knowledgeable and understand customer service. The owner was abrasive, condescending and so rude...I.e. "Do you even know how to snowboard?!" "You can get off the lift every time without falling?" We were in there to purchase and he completely lost our business and will be sure to let everyone else we know the same. NO COVID-19 MASK ENFORCEMENT: RUDE AND ABRASIVE OWNER To start off on the COVID-19 front: the owner of this store is NOT enforcing any sort of mask policy for its customers or employees, and generally is not wearing a mask himself. The first time I was there, he offered to put one on. The second time I was there I had to ask him and he begrudgingly complied. I initially went to Sunsports to get fitted for ski boots. The owner definitely knows his stuff, but can be incredibly abrasive. He gave me some good advice and guidance, but didn't have anything in stock that was in my price range (totally understandable). I got some advice on skis as well, but still wanted to shop around. I ended up ordering boots and equipment online, but still opted to bring my boots in to be heated and shaped (a paid service, which is fine). When the owner learned that I had ordered online, he told me that my use of his advice to order elsewhere was "a slap in the face" and "not how he stays in business". He continued to lecture and argue with me about my purchases until I eventually apologized for not buying directly from him (despite shopping around being in my best interest). My apology did nothing to diffuse the situation (honestly I don't think there is anything that I could have said to calm him down- I just had to take it) and he continued his tirade. This went on until I told him again that I was sorry, but that I was on a budget and his prices just did not fit it. My entire experience with him was INCREDIBLY uncomfortable and not something I ever plan on repeating, in or out of this establishment. I really wanted to like this place as it's one of the only shops in the valley, but my experience with the owner combined with his wanton disregard for the health and safety of his patrons has completely turned me off. While the other employees seemed very nice, I doubt I will ever return. Only reason that I did not give this place one star is because I did get some good information and the heat-forming service was well done. read more

I have never had worse customer service at an outdoor store than here - and I've been to a lot. The entire time it felt as if they didn't really care I was there. The owner was rude and dismissive. The rest of the staff was apathetic at best - seemed like it was just a bunch of family. On top of horrible customer service, the owner tried to up-sell me on buying new skis in about the most condescending, unprofessional way possible - had someone videoed it, it could be a demonstration video on how NOT to make a sale. The ONLY bright spot was the ski technician. This young guy was friendly, knowledgeable, and had learned that humble expertise works a lot better at building confidence than speaking condescendingly. If only he was the only person there! Icing on the cake was my wife's experience picking up our tuned up skis. She called me after leaving and said she would never return again. The owner was once again condescending. After 5 days with the skis, they STILL hadn't done them all, so she had to wait 45 minutes. I'm sure the quality of service on the last pair was poor. When the technician (the one nice guy) set the skis down, they fell over and managed to knock off some things from the counter. The apathetic girl behind the counter scoffed and watched as my wife picked the things up off the ground. My wife - who is about the kindest most forgiving person around - left demeaned and insulted. Apparently the only reason they're in business is because there is no other store around. Our first and last experience was horrible. We will drive to another city before we give Sunsport any business in the future. read more

In November 2018 I went to Sunsports to shop for ski boots. I was hoping to get back to skiing after a knee surgery. After years of renting from the ski resorts, I decided to start shopping for my pair own ski boots. I found the staff extremely helpful & knowledgeable on that occasion. I have the misfortune of having wide feet, 10 EEE, wide calves, & high arches. After trying on several boots, we found a size 28.5 boot that fit amazing. I was not ready to make the purchase & took a picture of the information about the boot from the side of the box. Recently I went back to Sunsports to rent some ski for myself & a friend for an upcoming ski trip. I also brought in my skis my daughter was going to use to have them tuned & waxed. The technician who had previously assisted me measured my foot & put me in a wide 27.5 boot. I told him that I had recently been measured at a 28.5 boot & that the boots felt a little tight. He explained that that is how they are supposed to fit & I was in the correct size. I informed him of width & high arches & again I was told the boots were the correct size. I was a little concerned about the fit & asked if the boots that I had previously tried on were in stock. I showed him the picture I had taken of the box which showed the boot size of 28.5. Unfortunately, the ski boots were not in stock & I left with the boots, poles, & demo skis. The total price for my equipment was $35. The following day I arrived at the ski resort & put the boots on. I was st&ing in line to get on the chairs on my first run & my feet were in so much pain. The boots felt as if they were crushing my feet. I hoped my foot & the boots would loosen up as I started skiing. Less than halfway down a green easy run I had to stop to loosen the boot buckles because of the pain. I had to stop three more times down the hill to ease the pain in my feet. I realized there was no way I could continue skiing in the boots the rest of the day & broke away from the group I was with. I went to the ski resorts rental area & explained my dilemma. They were happy to accommodate me by allowing me to rent larger size boots( & only the boots), 28.5 wide width, for $32. This was nearly the same cost as I had paid for the ski rental package (poles, demo skis, & boots) from Sunsports. I paid the $32 & spent the remainder of the day in the rental boots from the ski lodge. I had to work the following day & had my wife return the equipment to Sunsports. I asked her to explain my experience renting the boots & provided her with the boot rental contract from the ski resort. She told me she was greeted at the door & that the staff was nice. She explained what had happened to an older gentleman, assuming the owner, & showed him the rental receipt from the ski resort. He asked if I had tried them on & she explained the conversation I had with the technician & my concern about the boot size. The gentleman helped my wife carry in my rental equipment & my friend's rental equipment from the car to the store. My wife told me it appears as if he could have cared less about my experience or the fact that I had to shell out additional money because & employee was not listening to a concern their customer had about their equipment. As she was leaving, the gentleman told her I could have a discount the next time I can into the shop. To Sunsports, why would I return for a discount to rent equipment on my next ski trip, or purchase any future equipment from your store when I had a disappointing experience? This was my first time renting equipment & it nearly cost me the same amount as renting from the ski resort. The cost to rent the demo skis, poles & boot at the resort was $83. I spent $35 at your shop & an additional $32 for boots at the resort for a total of $77. Additionally, I wasted an hour at the ski resort rental place getting the boots instead of enjoying time on the mountain. To those looking to save a few dollars by renting from Sunsports, you may want to think twice & take this into consideration. You may pay more renting equipment at the ski resorts, but if you have any problems you can at least resolve there. There is nothing Sunsports can or will do when you experience problems with their rental equipment when you are two & a half hours away. At the end of it all, Sunsports got my money. I was left with an additional out of pocket expense & over an hour of time lost on the mountain. I really hate leaving negative reviews but I think the whole experience could have been h&led better. I cannot express how disappointed I was with the experience. I can only assume that Sunsports knows it is the only ski shop in the Modesto area & that is why their was a lack of concern. I think my future purchases will likely be done in the Bay Area or Sacramento region. It may be an out of the way drive, but I may get a better experience. read more

I highly recommend Sunsports for their personalized service and the honesty with which they do business. It is a family owned business with a father and son working together. The owner has been a life long skier and knows what he is talking about. He does not try to oversell his customers. The inventory that this store has is incredible and cannot be found anywhere else nearby. I have a 14.5 boot size and have had an extremely difficult time finding a good fit. The owner had several pair in my size and advised me on which one would be best for me. He was very helpful in every way. My family and I love Sunsports, and we love Sondeno Swim School!! They teach children a healthy respect for the water and truly get results in teaching them to swim. When my son started swim lessons, he wanted NOTHING to do with the water and tried every tactic under the sun to get out of going in the pool. They let him know that would not be tolerated, and that crying and arguing would not get him what he wanted, and in the end...he learned to swim, and I felt so much better about his safety that summer. He has continued with lessons at the Sondenos' every year, loves swimming more than anything, and is now on a swim team! Swimming is not something to mess around with, and I have truly appreciated the Sondenos' approach and how much they care about the kids that they teach. I'm thrilled that they are now teaching my daughter, and look forward to many more years at their pool! read more

Worst customer service I've had in awhile from a small business. I bought my husband some ski boots for Christmas and they didn't work out so I tried to take them back 3 days later and they would not allow me to. I had to exchange them or get a credit but chances of me driving back to Turlock were slim to none so I tried asking for a break to no avail. I've worked for mom and pop businesses all my life and know if you want to you can be nice to people and make exceptions but I guess the manager determined my business wasn't worth it. He said "we have to stick to the rules for everyone". Mind you the store was just about empty when I walked in. When I mentioned no one told me the policy he pointed out to a plain piece of printed paper with about a 12 font saying no returns. Thank God someone agreed to buy my credit in the store because I will never go back again after that. read more

This is a hard review to write because the owner is a nice enough guy. But this is the reason we have Yelp. Our family takes a ski vacation to Yosemite - Badger pass, every year. We also go to Aspen, where I grew up. I've skied since around the time I could walk, and frankly, I know my shit (skis, boots, snow, terrain, clothing, etc). The owner is a nice enough fellow - seemed eager to help and talk shop. He helped our daughters get their equipment first but I was a little leery when he just gave them the boots and didn't help them try them on or give them any pointers as to correct fit. Front entry ski boots are difficult for anyone to put on - our 8 and 10 year olds - forget it. Of course we jumped in to help, but what kind of rental outfit doesn't fit a boot on a kid? Next he asked me what kind of skier I am. I told him I grew up in Aspen and I've skied all my life but that that doesn't matter right now, I'm going to a mountain with 2 runs open and a 5 inch base. I specifically remember telling him "whatever" ski because that's what I meant. I can ski on a 2x4 if it's attached well. I said, something like a slalom ski or something short (easy to turn quickly) because I'm teaching my girls how to ski. I need to turn easily, ski backward, do fun tricks my kids can "ooh" and "ah" at. I'll be honest, I don't ski 90 days a year like I used to and I don't know the equipment like I used to. Until they're on my feet sliding down a hill. This guy gave me a pair of GS skis! These are race worthy, stiff, hard to turn at anything below 60 mph - the opposite of what I needed, and if he had any knowledge of the sport, he would know that. To his credit, they were good skis, but 100% wrong for what I asked for and needed. And any person who knows the industry would know that. And the kicker is, when we were checking out, he charged us double for my skis because he gave me "demo" skis! I didn't ask for demo skis. I specifically said "whatever" skis. I didn't put up a fuss, but I wish I would have. You just don't do that to people. Here's the other thing. I wanted to buy another pair of ski socks. Mine are about 100 years old and eh, memorabilia. I mentioned it and he brought me over to the sock rack and I immidiately started touching a pair of merino wool socks (good socks) I think around $12. Next he tells me that I've got to try to THESE, that these are the socks his wife uses every day for work etc. I'm on vacation and, meh, whatever, ok, they're pink and my kids will like them. Of course, the most expensive ones on the rack - $20! The part that bugs me though is when we get to the mountain and I'm putting them on I notice they have an embroidered flower pattern around the shin/ankle area, which you can't see when they're folded nicely in their package. Anyone who knows anything about ski socks knows any kind of wrinkle in the foot vacinity whatsoever can cause a world of pain, quickly. And only a rookie would recommend an embroidered sock.Now these socks are a painful reminder, literally, and a running joke in our family - don't be a nice, idiot. I'm not saying don't go here. But I would strongly suggest that you not take what this man says as an expert advice. Whatsoever. And you can find all the same stuff on Amazon/ elsewhere for considerably less money. Ah, one more thing! As I'm leaving he tells me, "If you can't step into the binding, don't worry, you just have to fiddle around with it, I really need to put new heels on my boots." WTF. I knew what he meant, but come on... I was firm about not wanting any trouble when I get out there - I blew out my knee a few years back and I don't want any random popping out or problems stepping in. Guess what? I had the damnedest time getting into one of my skis. Luckily it didn't pop off when I was cruising down the hill, but still, a business like that HAS to keep their equipment maintenance and safe. One star. Go to a professional at the resort. read more

My experience at Sunsports was beyond subpar. Overall, customer service skills need a lot of work. The gentleman who helped me needs to work on his delivery and manners. The gentleman seemed knowledgeable on the subject we were discussing but his delivery was poor and he stated he wanted to sell us certain things of the same brand for "the sake of my inventory". I used to rent at the resort or at a shop near the resort. Renting from Sunsports, I pay half (sometimes less) of what they charge at resorts. Also started buying some equipment and the employees and even owner took time and walked us through options. They made recommendations based on skill level and preferences and it really didn't feel like they were just trying to get me to buy their most expensive equipment. The owner and employees are very helpful and don't make you feel dumb or taken advantage of. Will definitely buy most if not all of my equipment from Sunsports. read more
