We found this small cafe we didn't realize we passed by every day. This place is amazing, we got the lentil soup with pumpkin and the meatballs with eggs and rice. The Turkish coffees were delicious too. The food was amazing and so tasteful. The owner told us how she makes everything fresh, herself everyday, the hot sauce (also homemade) was the best I've had. The food came with free bread and the hot sauce. She also came over with an extra plate and an extra soup for us to try each others meals. So much food for such a great price. Amazing service, clean fresh ingredients, support this small business and your tastebuds will thank you!! 100% will be coming back often!

Eating here made me feel like I was being served a home cooked meal at my grandma's house. The owner is so sweet and kind I couldn't help but smile throughout my entire experience. I had the meat, rice and eggs dish (I forget the real name) and it was absolutely amazing. Please come here and support this small business. This is what community should feel like!

The food was delicious and the chef/(owner?) Was so warm and welcoming. We had the spinach pie and breakfast sandwich with delicious green sauce. The iced almond cinnamon coffee was delicious as well.

I had the best experience here. Maria made me an amazing juice, and when I asked about the lentil soup, she prepared me a bowl immediately. With fresh bread that was absolutely amazing. She makes you feel like family instantly. Not to mention the lentil soup was SO GOOD and vegan. I would go back for the food alone, but Maria made me want to share this place with everyone I know! Oh my goodness! There are no words for how amazing this little cafe is. The cafe is owned by the sweetest woman ever, she made sure we felt at home. I ordered a Detox green juice, she was kind enough to give me a small cup with extra juice. I had some fresh spinach and cheese baklava, which was phenomenal. Definitely ask for her hot sauce, the owner gave us a complimentary homemade hot sauce. As we are eating, she even gave us a complimentary chicken empanada to share with our table and homemade ice cream. The owner said if you come around lunchtime, she has Chicken tagine (traditional Moroccan chicken dish). I would definitely come back again and it's worth you making the trek here!

The owner is super sweet and provides that neighborly feel when you order and are served with your food/drinks. We ordered the Mediterranean tuna sandwich and the turkey avocado, both were delicious but the tuna is my favorite! She also has freshly made baklava and spinach pie (my partner devoured it because that's how tasty it was) . Though the seating option is limited, there is an outdoor table and a table inside to sit at. Great to have this neighborhood cafe and definitely coming back!!

Where do I even begin with this place.... We were looking for a cafe just for a quick bite and drinks, little did we know we would stumble upon one of the greatest humans in New York. Maria was truly an unforgettable part of our trip. Got a coffee and a smoothie, both were amazing. She made my smoothie (the super berry) just a little more special with dates. We tried the homemade spinach pie, and oh my gosh, SO GOOD!!!!! Maria was great to talk to and she made us feel like we were a part of her family. Another hidden gem comes to Astoria -Sunshine is a hidden gem located at the other end of 21st Street off Ditmars Blvd The cafe itself has a nice bright and breezy feel, and though not very visible from the street, yet has a relaxed dining and seating area inside. The owner, Maria, has taken the time to display her fruits, juices, and pastries around the display table . I ordered a ham and cheese croissant, and my partner a spinach pie. We both ordered a cherry pastry, and I ordered freshly squeezed apple juice which was very fresh. You can see that the manager (Maria) takes her time with everything. Each dish she prepares separately, so everything takes time and is well worth it. Verdict -well worth a 2nd visit. I will be back.

We love this place! It has whatever you are looking for: coffee with pastries, incredible juices (worth the price!), and Moroccan tagine-style dinners. The cafe and staff are very child friendly. The Sunshine Cafe is a true gem: legitimately *great* food; carefully sourced ingredients; all cooked by people with a lot of skill and taste, but no need to show off. Once you meet Maria herself, you can see where all this goodness comes from: a person who knows food, works hard, and loves to take care of people, I've been lucky enough to have wonderful meals at famous places, fancy places, taco carts, sketchy-looking cafes, and homes on 5 continents. Ranking places isn't my thing, but I am sure the dinner I just had at Sunshine Cafe is as good as any meal I've had anywhere, and far better than most. Wish I lived closer! read more

Maria, the owner, is such a ball of sunshine, just like her cafe! The exterior is gloriously bright & yellow - you cannot miss it, and just like Maria, the cafe is such a beautiful representation of Astoria :) Situated right by the park, this is a perfect place for a quick, FRESH + homemade meal, coffee, and dessert. (I got the orange honey cake and it was so, so delicious!!!) Maria was amazingly hospitable & sincere, the whole experience felt like I was getting a home-cooked meal from my favorite aunt. Sunshine Cafe is the most refreshing, nourishing experience I have had in recent memory. The owner Maria is, fittingly, absolute sunshine in a person and makes everyone who walks in feel like it too. I had the Super Berry smoothie with oat, almond, AND soy milk mixed together and a bunch of dates - a slight variation from what the menu lists. Maria also graciously gifted me a cup of butternut squash soup to-go. There are a couple tables - but I would consider this not a laptop-friendly cafe, more book-friendly / chatting with Maria and the other patrons in the cozy space. This is my favorite cafe I've ever stepped foot into in NYC and as far as I'm concerned, this is the absolute best. Tucked away on picturesque 21st street, lies the most wonderful cafe featuring the friendliest, loveliest people who from the moment you arrive, treat you like family. It's the kind of cafe that reminds you why you live in New York in the first place and makes you miss your mother. Try everything they offer and return often. Maria's Mediterranean Tuna sandwich is like a loving embrace. My absolute favorite sandwich in New York. I come all the way out here from the East Village to eat it. okay a little secret...I came here to use the btc ATM. Thing worked good but it said the terminal ran out of btc after %$#.00. Okay, no worries perhaps I will be back tomorrow. But we all know the machine does NOT store the coins and the network does not run out. but other than that and the 15% premium is just insane. I mean wtf. Not sure what liberty or coinsorce, etc (but I'm gonna find out) charges but one thing for sure, 15% is too *&^%en HIGH! But the real gem here is Sunshine Cafes food is, off the charts. I had the MedTuna Sand and an avocado smoothie. It was pure bliss!! I did not expect this and I only even bought the sandwich cuss buying something just seemed like the thing to do. And btw Maria who I now know is the owner, is a flippin saint. This is the first and could very well be the last time I write one of these...lol read more

I stumbled on this gem of an establishment just yesterday morning. After heading out for an impromptu picnic with my youngest daughter on a chilly morning we decided to get breakfast first. That's when we stumbled on Sunshine Cafe. The fresh flowers and bright colors were enticing for my little one, who was excited about getting hot cocoa. We walked in, and the owner (Maria) instantly greeted us with a warm smile and "Good morning" Her hands were full with other orders and she assured me she'd be with me shortly. She took my order, and she offered for us to sit down, I shared I was in no rush and we waited for our things. While we waited there were books for us to use. I began reading "The better baby book" and my daughter enjoyed "The very hungry caterpillar". I ordered an iced Almond milk coffee, a bagel with cream cheese, and hot cocoa for my little one. Everything was delicious. My daughter and I really enjoyed our morning at Sunshine Cafe. Everyone who came in was kind and friendly as I believe the owner exudes this energy that rubs off on her customers. When leaving she even offered for me to finish the book and return the next time I'm around. It's so refreshing finding good places to eat that offer such a friendly and warm atmosphere. Also, another new regular was there who shared she stopped by often. She was so sweet and aided our lovely morning. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I went in one morning after dropping my child off at school for a quick coffee and was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by such a friendly face and ray of sunshine. I've been coming back everyday since. The organic coffee and pastries are delicious. This place is such a gem. The owner is by far the nicest shopkeep I've ever met in nyc and yall had better do good by her! The food is 12/10 insanely good. The hospitality and cleanliness is beyond perfect. Stellar service, delicious food, and great prices; a great addition to the neighborhood! Maria welcomed us in enthusiastically, and gave us samples of some of the most delicious soup we had ever tried--a butternut squash bisque and a Moroccan lentil soup. They were so good that we ended up walking out with a cup of each! If you have a sweet tooth, her rice pudding is some of the best I've ever had. More than that, her friendly and welcoming personality was so magnetic and warming. We will definitely be coming back, and I highly recommend that anyone in the area give it a try it too! read more

By pure accident, I stumbled upon Sunshine Café--and what a joyful discovery! The atmosphere is bright, cozy, and welcoming, the kind of place where you instantly feel at ease. A big part of that warmth comes from the owner, Lalla Ritta. She greets everyone like family, with genuine kindness and hospitality that shows in the details, the service, and the food. The Sunshine Cafe is a sweet little spot right near the park, so we decided to check it out for brunch this morning. I got the mango fruit tea (iced) and a ham and cheese toasted croissant sandwich. The tea was perfectly refreshing and the right amount of sweet, while the sandwich was toasted and melted to perfection. I highly recommend this cozy, well lit spot. This is my new favorite cafe! I only wish that I still lived in the area so that I could enjoy it everyday. True to its name, it has a bright, welcoming vibe, and I can't imagine a better way to start the day. The owner, Maria, is warm and gracious--a ray of sunshine herself! The coffee and pastry were both delicious, and I can't wait to go back and try the fresh juices and smoothies. While the outside awning notes "The Little Coffee Shop", to my understanding "To Laiko" means "The people's" in Greek. They're among the only folks to my knowledge that sell authentic bougatsa, a breakfast phyllo rich specialty pastry that skews sweet and is enjoyed best with tea and/or coffee. They also have an excellent selection of spanakopita, which is Greece's most famous pastry containing feta and spinach. (#3) The kasseri cheese pie is also not to be missed, along with koulouri (sesame circular bread rolls), savory pastries, and the occasional loukamade (aka Greek donut). Prices aren't back breaking, but they've crept up over the years. While I think they accept credit card, it's always best to go with cash here to avoid any upcharges. Service from Angela is sweet and cordial and I prefer getting a drink with several pies on the go since seating is minimal. My hope is that this review helps others find them, since this is a place not to be missed.
