The lady who runs this place is manipulative and clearly making up prices as she goes. Confirmed by what other reviewers have said on Google Maps. None of the prices were on the menu. Tuna sandwich was $18, soup was $18. There were two sizes of soups and she didn't ask which one we wanted and then gave us a huge one, which is clearly another meal's worth. She didn't itemize the charges until we asked and it still sounded wrong. She said "oh I won't charge you for the bread," and we didn't even ask for bread, it just came with the soup. She messed up our orders, we both asked for cheese, and she gave only one of us cheese, and then they were the same made up price. She clearly was messing up other people's orders as well thinking a girl got a coffee when she actually got a smoothie (though I will give her credit that she clarified and did get her the smoothie). When the girl asked for it to go the woman was actually mad about it and it was like the girl had to justify getting it to go. On top of all this the place was kind of dirty and disorganized and it was very difficult to communicate with her. The food was actually pretty good and at first I thought I'd like to come back to try her pastries or something, but there's no way I'm going through all this crap to get them. If her business practices were honest I would come back, but they aren't. I'm not usually one to take issue with service and such--I'll go to the grungiest hole in a wall in the world and love it--but this was messed up. This whole experience made me doubt everything--she claimed the bread was homemade, the mayo was homemade, everything was organic--given everything else I am extremely skeptical of that. I regret not having the bravery to confront her about all this and instead just paying up like a schmuck. Can't believe this place is rated so highly. Just go to the deli next door. read more

I cannot speak more highly of this beautiful café. You can tell that everything is fresh. Everything is made with love. The owner and her family are so welcoming, attentive and they put a lot of soul into the food and the customer experience. The couscous I just enjoyed with my daughters was one of the most flavorful and nourishing meals I have had (outside of my grandmother's kitchen) in a long time. We found this small cafe we didn't realize we passed by every day. This place is amazing, we got the lentil soup with pumpkin and the meatballs with eggs and rice. The Turkish coffees were delicious too. The food was amazing and so tasteful. The owner told us how she makes everything fresh, herself everyday, the hot sauce (also homemade) was the best I've had. The food came with free bread and the hot sauce. She also came over with an extra plate and an extra soup for us to try each others meals. So much food for such a great price. Spent the day at Astoria Park and found myself starving! I stumbled upon this lovely cafe and ordered a Mediterranean Tuna Sandwich. Maria makes everything fresh and you can tell! She went to the back and made the sandwich herself. This place is definitely known in this hood. Other people walked in while I was eating and knew Maria on a first name basis. Sunshine cafe is down the block from my house. This weekend I stopped by twice but have been there before for a sandwich and juice. Maria is the sweetest, very attentive and puts in great care for her food and the quality of the ingredients in her dishes. The place is small and has a few tables for dining in. I love the green juice and had the tagine chicken on a recent visit. It was so flavorful. I overheard the couple mention the lentil dish they serve is also wonderful. I'm not surprised. Oh my goodness! There are no words for how amazing this little cafe is. The cafe is owned by the sweetest woman ever, she made sure we felt at home. I ordered a Detox green juice, she was kind enough to give me a small cup with extra juice. I had some fresh spinach and cheese baklava, which was phenomenal. Definitely ask for her hot sauce, the owner gave us a complimentary homemade hot sauce. We ordered the Mediterranean tuna sandwich and the turkey avocado, both were delicious but the tuna is my favorite! Where do I even begin with this place.... We were looking for a cafe just for a quick bite and drinks, little did we know we would stumble upon one of the greatest humans in New York. Maria was truly an unforgettable part of our trip. Got a coffee and a smoothie, both were amazing. She made my smoothie (the super berry) just a little more special with dates. I took a walk towards Astoria Park today and decided to stop by here since there were so many rave reviews. The hype is real! First of all, the Moroccan lady working the register (I'm assuming it's the owner) is a ball of energy! You can truly see the love and the hard work that goes into all of the food and drinks she and her staff make at this place. Today, I opted for a "Dream Machine" smoothie and an empanada. At $4 each, the empanadas are huge - worth the price. The hot sauce they come with is excellent too. The smoothie is a bit expensive ($10), but very delicious and filling. The order of the person ahead of me got mixed up, and there was a bit of a back-and-forth, but the lady at the register realized that what she made was different from what the menu said and changed the drink with no issues, and even offered some extras to the person ordering for her troubles. Good service! I would be curious to try some of the other foods they offer. The lady mentioned to me they had tagine, couscous, and halal chicken meals. They also had a lot of juice, smoothie, bubble tea, lunch, pastry, and dessert options (and some basic coffee options too). Note: there are 2 small tables inside and 2-3 small tables outside. I came in one day wanting a lemon snapple, and they appeared to be sold out, so Maria made me a fresh Moroccan iced tea. When i say this was the best iced tea ive ever had in MY LIFE? Ive been coming back at least once a week since. Its been three months. Maria is the most genuine and authentic woman I have met. Another hidden gem comes to Astoria -Sunshine is a hidden gem located at the other end of 21st Street off Ditmars Blvd The cafe itself has a nice bright and breezy feel, and though not very visible from the street, yet has a relaxed dining and seating area inside. The owner, Maria, has taken the time to display her fruits, juices, and pastries around the display table . I ordered a ham and cheese croissant, and my partner a spinach pie. We both ordered a cherry pastry, and I ordered freshly squeezed apple juice which was very fresh. You can see that the manager (Maria) takes her time with everything. Maria is an absolute gem and so incredibly sweet. I have only had the coffee here 2x and both times, it was amazing and delicious. Maria is so friendly and generous - she gave me some wonderful dates with my coffee and when I told her that my husband is waiting in the car, she insisted on making a coffee for him as well.
