I'm writing this review for those of you looking to update your pool. We had a pool installed about 20 years ago. What started out as just a replacement of an expansion joint, then became a little bit bigger of a project. We realized we should replace the cultured stone that had been eaten away by the saltwater pool. We also wanted to save our pebble tech since it was in good shape. We received two quotes both didn't feel they could save the pebble tech or wanted to maybe be a little more aggressive and try to get us to replace our pebble tech as well. Our third quote came from John at Sunset Builders and Design. John has been in the area for many years and a few of my close friends have used them in the past. I talked to my friends for the recommendation and John came out to look at the pool. He was the only one that felt he could save the pebble tech. His quote came in very fair and reasonable. We were able to save the pebble tech and John made a few other suggestions that really made the end result come together perfectly. One of the best things of working with John is his daily follow up. Not only does John come by daily, usually first thing in the morning, but he wraps up his day by creating a video of what took place that day and what is expected for the next. Something I'm not used to seeing with contractors today, but that kind of follow up is un-paralleled in his industry. John "JZ" Zahn was attentive, professional, and detail-oriented from the day he stepped into our yard. In 4 short months from the day we first met JZ, our pool and spa was ready for our now Kindergartener to splash around in the last weeks of warm weather. There are a few characteristics of JZ and his crew that really stand out: He is a detail oriented professional. His proposal was clearly laid out and all upgrades were separately priced so his clients could decide on how to customize their build. Sunset maintains an excellent professional relationship with city inspectors. Never was there a delay because we were waiting for inspection. The team does not cut corners. Everything is done to code and even the "rough" work looks clean. Sunset recommends high end materials and equipment but does offer choices at varying price points. We went significantly over-budget...but that was our own dang fault! JZ and his office manager Nate, but mostly JZ, made at least one trip to the house per work day....at times he made multiple encore appearances. He's got a committed and skilled team, but oversight always makes for efficient progress. His focus on staying local allows for this added project governance. It's kinda fantastic. They send a video update to recap the day's work....a very quick visual of JZ describing the accomplishments of the day and activities for the next work day. We had a 70s pool that had fallen on some hard times. We considered doing the bare minimum to redoing just about everything and adding a spa. Ultimately, we decided to make a major investment so we could feel like we're on vacation any day and are 100% thrilled with the end result. A big part of making that commitment was knowing the reputation and quality of Sunset Designers and Builders. The owner is the primary contact from beginning to end and would send a video update EVERY day. We hit a few delays but given this project was done during COVID times, the delays were minimized and clearly communicated. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable with both construction and design options. We were uncertain if an elevated pool would fit our backyard given the pool takes most of the space. We thought it might feel crowded but it absolutely does not and we use the surround for seating constantly. It's a great way to take 5 min break between work calls and lay on it with your hand it the water. Working with a local builder also meant we could go look at other projects in the neighborhood and see how various material looked and, of course, PebbleTec color which is impossible to choose from a dry 2" sample. We went with a custom blend which started with one the darker blue colors but with added black. It turned out the perfect color - a deep rich blue. We love it. We considered not adding the landscaping but are so glad we did. It really helps complete the resort feeling and lights at night are beautiful from the kitchen window so even if we're not in the backyard, it makes us smile. If you live in the Sunset Designers and Builders area we strongly recommend them. They do quality work, are honest, have impeccable communication, and are fairly priced for this type of investment. Building a pool is a daunting task and I'm sure it can go horribly wrong. Not the case if you go with John Zahn and Sunset. John and his whole team are true professionals that aim to please. They do extremely high quality work (I'm a self proclaimed annoying perfectionist). We hired Sunset Designers in the Summer of 2020 for a complete backyard remodel with swimming pool and couldn't have been happier that we chose John Zahn and the Sunset team to bring our dreams to reality.  We spent more than a year researching and interviewing pool and landscape contractors prior to making the decision to move forward with Sunset.  John's level of professionalism, follow up, and creativity throughout that process were ultimately what we valued in the person who we would trust to oversee what we considered to be a substantial investment and the place where our family would spend so much time together.  Starting from day one to project completion we were amazed by how communicative they were, providing updates on a daily basis, and we always knew what they would be working on the following day.  John was always available and prepared to talk through any ideas or changes we may have come up with throughout the project.  He gave us the creative freedom we wanted but ultimately guided us to make the best decisions based on his many years of experience and design talent.  His hard-working team showed up on-time every day and they were always friendly and courteous.  They also cleaned up the site at the end of each day, which is something we've learned to appreciate after working with many contractors in the past.  Our project included an outdoor kitchen, firepit, 3 separate deck areas, landscaping, lighting (landscape and patio), irrigation, drainage, outdoor shower, pool and jacuzzi.  And, in the end the project turned out even better than we had imagined.  John and the Sunset team were an absolute pleasure to work with and I would hire them to do all of my home projects if I could.  If you are considering hiring them for your backyard/pool, you will not be disappointed.  You will also enjoy John's sense of humor!  Thanks Sunset for everything! read more

We contacted Sunset Designers & Builders (Sunset) based off of on-line reviews. When we met with John, we knew right away that we would be using his company to build our pool, spa, and barbecue area. He came well-prepared for the interview and was very knowledgable and professional. Sunset showed up every day that it was possible to work and Nate updated us (via email) on the job progress on a daily basis. John was very willing to listen to our ideas and never tried to discourage us from making changes to the original plan. At the same time, he would advise us of the pros and cons of our changes. Sunset documented all changes to the contract and would periodically send us an update of where we were, regarding what was paid and what remained on the contract. In the end, Sunset delivered everything that was promised (and more) and they were actually ahead of schedule. I would highly recommend Sunset for anyone considering a pool project. It was June and we were faced with an October wedding at our home. Our pool needed help but making sure the pool was ready for the big day was scary. We said, "If we can't start by July 1st we won't start." After three different pool builders came by the house in walked John Zahn. He came baring samples, ideas and a guarantee that the pool would not only be ready on time, but ahead of time. It took us about 5 minutes to realize that this was the company! No remodel is easy and the decisions that need to be made can be daunting. But John, and Nate, made the process a pleasure. The different teams that came to work were all great.
