We hired Sunset Designers and Builders to construct our pool and hardscape, and it was an absolute pleasure working with John and his team. During our initial meeting, John thoroughly explained his services and the equipment and materials he uses, and provided us with a detailed folder for our review, which was very informative and reassuring. Throughout the project, John sent daily video updates, including any changes to the project worksheet, which kept us in the loop every step of the way. John and his team were responsive, professional, detail-oriented, and always available to address any questions. They completed the pool and hardscape earlier than estimated timeline, something that is rare and greatly appreciated. From start to finish, they gave us complete confidence that the job would be done right. We LOVE our new backyard and can't wait to enjoy it! read more

Sunset Designers & Builders - Pool with spa - Pool & Hot Tub Service Near Me - Los Alamitos, California

We are having the best summer of our lives thanks to Sunset Designers & Builders! If you're looking for a pool and backyard contractor who truly delivers on every promise, I can't recommend them highly enough. John Zahn (JZ), the owner, and his trusted second-in-command, Nate, along with their outstanding crew, transformed our backyard into something we had been dreaming about for decades. The finished result is absolutely stunning! It is a perfect combination of beauty and functionality. From the very beginning, communication was exceptional. John has over 45 years of experience, and it shows in every aspect of the project. We received daily video updates so we always knew exactly what had been accomplished and what was coming next. The project was completed within the timeframe we requested, which coordinated with the rest of our home remodel project. One of the things we appreciated most was John's design instinct. He has an incredible eye for creating a cohesive, beautiful outdoor space, while also listening carefully to our ideas and incorporating our personal preferences. The result feels uniquely ours, only better than we ever imagined. Our project included remodeling our existing pool, adding a spa , new decking, landscaping, outdoor lighting, integrated speakers, and an incredible BBQ island. They even redesigned our patio cover so it blended seamlessly with the new backyard. Every detail was thoughtfully planned. The automation is another feature we love. The pool, lighting, and sprinklers are all controlled automatically with timers, making everything easy to enjoy without constant maintenance. One design feature we especially appreciate is the raised pool walls. Besides looking elegant, they provide an added measure of safety because it's much harder for young children or older adults to accidentally fall into the pool. The entire crew was loyal, friendly, respectful, and incredibly hardworking. It was obvious they take pride in their craftsmanship and genuinely care about doing the job right. Sunset Designers & Builders handled every facet of our backyard remodel, making what could have been a stressful experience remarkably smooth. If you want a contractor who combines decades of experience, outstanding communication, exceptional craftsmanship, and true artistic vision, Sunset Designers & Builders should be your first call. They didn't just remodel our backyard; they created an outdoor living space we'll enjoy for years to come. We couldn't be happier, and we give them our highest recommendation read more

Complete satisfaction. Professionalism? Top notch. Everything is communicated upfront and throughout the process as soon as changes happen. No fuss, no stress, and just be available to talk. John and his crew took care of everything. I'm typically very hands-on but I was very hands-off with this process because I had no doubt John could deliver on our agreed plan. When the outcome turned out to be better than your vision, you know you chose the right people to work for the job. This is a complete backyard and pool build for us. So if you're new to construction or you simply have fear around this type of project, save yourself the stress and hassle and go with John. You won't regret it. His high rating is yelp is not manufactured. If there's another star I will gladly give him that star. You'll get your money worth. He'll deliver and hopefully he can deliver over expectations like he did for us. Excellent company and excellent people to work with. read more

I'm writing this review for those of you looking to update your pool. We had a pool installed about 20 years ago. What started out as just a replacement of an expansion joint, then became a little bit bigger of a project. We realized we should replace the cultured stone that had been eaten away by the saltwater pool. We also wanted to save our pebble tech since it was in good shape. We received two quotes both didn't feel they could save the pebble tech or wanted to maybe be a little more aggressive and try to get us to replace our pebble tech as well. Our third quote came from John at Sunset Builders and Design. John has been in the area for many years and a few of my close friends have used them in the past. I talked to my friends for the recommendation and John came out to look at the pool. He was the only one that felt he could save the pebble tech. His quote came in very fair and reasonable. We were able to save the pebble tech and John made a few other suggestions that really made the end result come together perfectly. One of the best things of working with John is his daily follow up. Not only does John come by daily, usually first thing in the morning, but he wraps up his day by creating a video of what took place that day and what is expected for the next. Something I'm not used to seeing with contractors today, but that kind of follow up is un-paralleled in his industry. I would highly recommend John and his company if you have any thoughts of wanting to update your pool. read more

This is a long overdue 5-star review I owe Sunset Designers & Builders as we have been busy enjoying our newly built pool/jacuzzi :). John and team from Sunset Designers & Builders is definitely the top-notch pool builder that you would want to hire if you want a high-quality, well-commuinicate, smooth and worry-free pool building process. John is always quick to response, attentive and accommodating. Pool and hardscape were beautifully done about a month and half ago. We (both myself, wife and kids) now miss John's voice and his daily update video a lot because it's sort of addicting watching it every single day during the whole building process lol. read more

John Zahn, Nate Trimmer and his team are exemplary outdoor contractors and specialists that design amazing outdoor spaces. They delivered a modern, creative design on-time and did not cut any corners when we asked them to build a pool and spa in our backyard. John thinks of every detail and provides many options. The thing that sets John and his team apart is his communication style and processes. His daily video emails and nearly daily drop in visits set him apart from anyone else that has ever worked on our home. We love our pool so much that we also asked him to transform our front yard and driveway! We recommend Sunset Designers and Builders in a heart beat! read more

Front and Backyard I highly recommend Sunset Designers & Builders for anyone looking to build a pool or have any pool-related work done.  From start to finish, John and his team were exceptional in every aspect of our project. They rebuilt our front yard, adding a new driveway, fence, gates, patio cover, water feature and fire pit, planters and all landscape. In our backyard we had all the concrete replaced, the pool tile and coping replaced, added patio covers, planters and landscape. They did it all!   Firstly, John was extremely knowledgeable and helpful during the design process, taking time to listen to our vision, needs and preferences.  He also offered valuable advice and suggestions to create the perfect outdoor space for us.  John understood that we are not architects or a designers but that we had basic ideas of what we wanted.  He was so patient and worked with us helping to design the perfect yard.   In addition, he also provided a detained timeline and budget, which he adhered to throughout the project.   The construction process was seamless, and the team was always professional, courteous and respectful to our property.  John kept us informed every step of the way by sending us daily short video updates that we really appreciated.  This is not the type of company that doesn't show up for days or that you need to hunt down.  John was always available to answers any questions we had.  Also, before anything serious would take place, for instance pouring concrete or placing drainpipes, he would walk the project with us to make sure we were all on the same page.    The finished product is beyond our expectations, and we have been enjoying our front and back yard ever since.  We have received numerous compliments from friend, passersby, and family.  We are confident in recommending Sunset Designers & Builders to anyone looking for a quality pool contractor.  They truly went above and beyond to ensure that we were completely satisfied with our final project. read more

Full transparency: We've been due to leave a review for JZ and his team at Sunset for a long time...and we're finally doing it because the weather is cooling down and we're not in our pool 24/7 now! From start to finish, John was communicative, detail oriented, and honest. He gave his expert opinion on our design choices, guided us through our decision-making, provided us with daily updates, and treated us like we were at the top of his priority list. Both John and Nate were easy to get a hold of if we ever had a question and were a wealth of knowledge and resources when it came to any additions we wanted. Our whole yard was transformed and has been the go-to spot for parties and BBQ's this past summer. We honestly couldn't be happier! read more

When we bought our home in Los Alamitos back in 2018, we knew for sure that something needed to be done to the backyard so our toddler would have a place to play and eventually hang out as he grew into his teen years. When the pandemic hit, we began looking into what we wanted in the backyard of our forever home and started our outreach to various pool builders. John "JZ" Zahn was attentive, professional, and detail-oriented from the day he stepped into our yard. In 4 short months from the day we first met JZ, our pool and spa was ready for our now Kindergartener to splash around in the last weeks of warm weather. There are a few characteristics of JZ and his crew that really stand out: He is a detail oriented professional. His proposal was clearly laid out and all upgrades were separately priced so his clients could decide on how to customize their build. Sunset maintains an excellent professional relationship with city inspectors. Never was there a delay because we were waiting for inspection. The team does not cut corners. Everything is done to code and even the "rough" work looks clean. Sunset recommends high end materials and equipment but does offer choices at varying price points. We went significantly over-budget...but that was our own dang fault! JZ and his office manager Nate, but mostly JZ, made at least one trip to the house per work day....at times he made multiple encore appearances. He's got a committed and skilled team, but oversight always makes for efficient progress. His focus on staying local allows for this added project governance. It's kinda fantastic. They send a video update to recap the day's work....a very quick visual of JZ describing the accomplishments of the day and activities for the next work day. I'm a project manager and this update gave me all the feels. This review is getting entirely too long but you get the picture. If you are looking for a QUALITY build and need to have a detailed professional who will get the work done impeccably and ON TIME, JZ and his Sunset crew is the way to go. read more

We had a 70s pool that had fallen on some hard times. We considered doing the bare minimum to redoing just about everything and adding a spa. Ultimately, we decided to make a major investment so we could feel like we're on vacation any day and are 100% thrilled with the end result. A big part of making that commitment was knowing the reputation and quality of Sunset Designers and Builders. The owner is the primary contact from beginning to end and would send a video update EVERY day. We hit a few delays but given this project was done during COVID times, the delays were minimized and clearly communicated. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable with both construction and design options. We were uncertain if an elevated pool would fit our backyard given the pool takes most of the space. We thought it might feel crowded but it absolutely does not and we use the surround for seating constantly. It's a great way to take 5 min break between work calls and lay on it with your hand it the water. Working with a local builder also meant we could go look at other projects in the neighborhood and see how various material looked and, of course, PebbleTec color which is impossible to choose from a dry 2" sample. We went with a custom blend which started with one the darker blue colors but with added black. It turned out the perfect color - a deep rich blue. We love it. We considered not adding the landscaping but are so glad we did. It really helps complete the resort feeling and lights at night are beautiful from the kitchen window so even if we're not in the backyard, it makes us smile. If you live in the Sunset Designers and Builders area we strongly recommend them. They do quality work, are honest, have impeccable communication, and are fairly priced for this type of investment. Project scope: · Add spa · Add pool heater · Move pool equipment · Resurface · New coping · Extend entry steps · Add LED pool lights · Create bench along deep end · Replace diving board with jumping block · Add waterfall (that we can sit under!) · Redo backyard concrete · Add planting area, landscape, and lighting read more

Building a pool is a daunting task and I'm sure it can go horribly wrong. Not the case if you go with John Zahn and Sunset. John and his whole team are true professionals that aim to please. They do extremely high quality work (I'm a self proclaimed annoying perfectionist). At first John's bid seemed a little higher than others but when I dug in it was because he was bidding the job to include all the details that would make the project complete. The final number I paid actually went down slightly from what he originally quoted. He is not trying to over charge you he is just trying to do it right! Fast! From first shovel full of dirt to a full beautiful pool in less than 11 weeks. We got lucky with weather but I can only remember a day or two of no workers on site. Extremely organized and efficient process from start to finish. A heartfelt thanks from my family to John, Nate, Luis, Carlos, Eddie, Chucho and the rest of the crew. After wrestling our way through a couple of very difficult home remodels, we decided to choose Sunset based not only on photos of their product, but also on the reviews which clearly demonstrated that they were highly professional and excellent communicators. To say they exceeded our expectations on every level would be a tremendous understatement and would just not do them justice. This is a company that would literally email us EVERY DAY to send updates and make sure we were prepared for next steps. There was nothing the crew did, that John or Nate hadn't run by us first. They were fantastic communicators... so far beyond anything we expected. From the moment we initially called John until the end of the project , he was nothing but professional, enthusiastic, straightforward about pricing, incredibly knowledgeable and super nice. He is full of great ideas and experience but was always willing to listen to and humor my crazy design ideas and ultimately executed a vision that is so far beyond amazing that we have to keep pinching ourselves. Despite several bouts of heavy rain, Sunset stayed almost nearly on track with timing and handled the weather like absolute pros (covering with plastic and even installing a pump to drain water out to the street). His crew and all contracted workers are the best of the best... all very professional, respectful, clean and really thoughtful in the way that they handled the job. Each time an inspector would come out, we got comments about how it was the best job they had ever seen. I'll stop here, but just know that I could go on and on. I'm sure we could have found a company to do it cheaper, but trust me when I say that working with Sunset was worth every penny. Perfect from start to finish and now that it's done, we have absolute confidence that each step of the process was handled meticulously. WE LOVE OUR BACKYARD and we love John Zahn and his crew. Best home improvement decision we have ever made. read more

John and the team at Sunset did a great job in helping us create and build our outdoor oasis. Right when we met John my wife and I really liked how open and honest he was. All the pricing was very well documented and he took a lot of time to provide all the samples we needed. When we decided to change something he made sure it was in writing and that we agreed to the price. His communication was great and we always knew what was going on with the project at all times. We even made a mistake in a choosing some pool tile for the the spa overflow that just didn't look right and he removed it and put different tile and didn't charge us for the mistake we had made. It was great working with John and the team at Sunset. Our pool has become the neigboorhood YMCA because every kids and parent want to come enjoy our backyard oasis. read more

If you are looking to put a pool in or redo your entire backyard, call John Zahn of Sunset Designers & Builders. We contacted quite a few other contractors before we found John and I wish we would've found him first. What impressed us most about John and Nate (the office manager) is their high level of communication. When I first called Sunset, John answered the phone. I filled out a quick online form of what we were looking to do and he called me back the next day. Within 24 hours, we had met, discussed the project and by the end of the week we had a preliminary design. John and Nate are always available, either by phone or text or email. The building process was seamless. John and Nate were on top of every detail.... helping us pick out materials, constantly communicating with subcontractors, stopping by daily to check on the progress and fixing anything that wasn't done right. Barely a day went by that someone wasn't working on our yard. We are thrilled with how our backyard turned out. We put in a pool and spa, fire pit, patio cover with built-in barbecue area and a little back house. Fantastic! When it was time for Nancy and I to renovate our 20-year-old backyard pool area we could not think of a better person to do it than John Zahn of Sunset Designers & Builders John has been around Rossmoor for over 30 years and he has renovated and installed new pools for what I would guess is well over 300 satisfied customers. Plus, he has been very active in various community events including the Garden Club show which is held in May. In our situation, we wanted a complete renovation of our backyard pool area. We contacted John and told him of our idea's and listen to his ideas. John came up with a high-tech graphic of what he thought we should do. We were totally impressed with the high-tech graphic he delivered to us showing our backyard as it would look when the project was completed. We started the first Tuesday in January and finished the middle of April. During that time there was only two working days that the crew was not on the job due to COVID. The crew always arrived on time and left at about the same time every day. It was fun watching the project come together from our back sliding door and also what a great team of workers John has put together to work the project. They were all on time, courtesy, knew what they were doing and always willing to listen to my questions and answer them if needed. Our backyard renovation was completed 3 years ago. This review is long overdue but in some ways it is also very timely given that our backyard has served as our TOTAL and COMPLETE entertainment during this time of pandemic. Not only is our backyard a total oasis, it has provided much needed entertainment during the safer at home mandate. We are truly thankful! Now let's talk about the project itself. I should start off by saying that I'm a physician and my husband is a New Yorker so we have very meticulous ideas and are very vocal about how they are carried out lol. That being said, Sunset was the perfect team for our needs! Their daily updates and real time discussions were so, so, so great. We felt completely in the loop every step of the way. And the team was SO professional! They were always timely, courteous, clean, and are experts at what they do. I really can't say enough about our experience with Sunset! We had an idea of what we wanted our backyard to look like but John and his team took it to the NEXT LEVEL!!! They "elevated" our imagination and turned our dream backyard into the best reality we could have imagined! This pandemic has made us grateful for every big and small blessing. We literally thank God every time we walk into our backyard and can say without reservation that we have enjoyed our backyard paradise more with each passing year! read more

From beginning contact/estimate to our final clean-up and pool start-up, John and Nate at Sunset Designers did everything they promised, with creativity and excellent day-to-day updates on all aspects of our home pool remodel. I felt that John didn't just want to get a contract signed for one more pool- I felt he wanted to create something beautiful- and he did. He contributed his design expertise but allowed me, at all stages, to modify to my tastes. Contractors of all types are not known for personal service or good communication skills. In my experience, John is a real exception. Every aspect of our project with Sunset equalled or exceeded our expectations. All of the workers on this project, from demolition to final landscaping, were personally overseen and supervised by John. All of them were courteous and punctual. We are giving John Zahn (JZ) and the Sunset Designers & Builders team a rating of 5 only because 6 is not available. We have had many contractors and tradespeople work on our properties over the years, and Sunset was by far the easiest to work with while providing a superior result. Our project was to update an existing 25 year old pool/Jacuzzi and backyard deck/patio area. Our first meeting with JZ resulted in excellent design recommendations with a comprehensive written bid and schedule within a few days. After working out a few details and signing the contract, JZ started on time and finished exactly on the scheduled completion date -- a first for us! JZ has years of experience in pool building and his guidance was invaluable throughout the project. He was incredibly patient with us during the decision making process - guiding us through concrete color, tile selections, pool color/finish, equipment options and special features. He also took us to other completed jobs to see design ideas and provided experienced comments to reassure us that our selections would work. The quality of the work done by the crew was also amazing with a focus on craftsmanship in all aspects of the project. Finally, JZ stands out above all other contractors with his level of communication. During the 12-week project, JZ sent a daily video update on job progress and immediately updated the contract with written change orders. Never once did we wonder if a trade was showing up the next day or what our cost would be. JZ, his "right hand" Nate, and the crews were all exceptional. The quality of the work and how JZ guides owners in decisions reflect his unwavering commitment to a quality job that will last for many years. We had an amazing experience with Sunset Designers & Builders. JZ, Nate and the team went above and beyond. After meeting with JZ, we knew he was the right person to completely revamp our backyard. We weren't sure about the elevated pool, it was something we hadn't seen before. So JZ took us to a couple of the pools he built. After seeing the first one, we knew it was the way to go, it really makes the backyard pop. It's also a perfect barrier for our young kids and great for sitting around the pool for adults during parties. JZ took our initial thoughts and was able to make some changes to incorporate various features and areas we wanted in the yard. We hired Sunset Designers in the Summer of 2020 for a complete backyard remodel with swimming pool and couldn't have been happier that we chose John Zahn and the Sunset team to bring our dreams to reality.  We spent more than a year researching and interviewing pool and landscape contractors prior to making the decision to move forward with Sunset.  John's level of professionalism, follow up, and creativity throughout that process were ultimately what we valued in the person who we would trust to oversee what we considered to be a substantial investment and the place where our family would spend so much time together.  Starting from day one to project completion we were amazed by how communicative they were, providing updates on a daily basis, and we always knew what they would be working on the following day.  John was always available and prepared to talk through any ideas or changes we may have come up with throughout the project.  He gave us the creative freedom we wanted but ultimately guided us to make the best decisions based on his many years of experience and design talent.  His hard-working team showed up on-time every day and they were always friendly and courteous.  They also cleaned up the site at the end of each day, which is something we've learned to appreciate after working with many contractors in the past.  Our project included an outdoor kitchen, firepit, 3 separate deck areas, landscaping, lighting (landscape and patio), irrigation, drainage, outdoor shower, pool and jacuzzi.  And, in the end the project turned out even better than we had imagined.  John and the Sunset team were an absolute pleasure to work with and I would hire them to do all of my home projects if I could.  If you are considering hiring them for your backyard/pool, you will not be disappointed.  You will also enjoy John's sense of humor!  Thanks Sunset for everything! read more
