We were visiting Purdue for homecoming and stayed downtown at the Holiday Inn just a block away from this diner. First time there and it will definitely be the last. Expectations were high, considering that a small hole in the wall place should know how to cook basic food. I ordered the special of the day.... eggs, ham, and a biscuit. Eggs were fine, but the ham was completely burnt on one side (the side facing down of course). The biscuit was also completely undercooked. Nothing but a doughy mess inside. Atmosphere of the diner was great until the food arrived. Also, this place does accept credit cards. However, they wait until they are midway through the transaction to tell about a $1.75 surcharge. We canceled the transaction and just paid in cash. Definitely cheap food, and now I know why. Avoid this place until they get a new cook. read more

This restaurant is beyond spectacular. I've never been disappointed by eating there. It's very reasonably priced and has a fantastic sit-down diner atmosphere. Since it's downtown, there are lots of locals, so there's not tons of noise and disruption in the air. Their biscuits and gravy are perfect. I could eat them all day. But maybe not because a half order makes me uncomfortably full. All of their dishes are amazing. The service is friendly and fast (as fast as the food takes to cook, at least) and service comes and goes to check is anything else is needed. The only bad thing about the place is that they charge an extra $2 per credit/debit card transaction, so I highly recommend paying in cash to dodge that little fee. read more

Great traditional hole-in-the-wall diner for breakfast. I really miss their old hours though, when you could knock on the window at 2am and George would open up the place to serve you. I have eaten breakfast here a couple of times, as it is better than the hotels. Sunrise Diner is a typical diner. The food is good for the money. My one complaint, stop using processed cheese slices. If I have to pay extra for cheese the least that can be done is to grate some for my omlette. Service has always been prompt and attentive when am there. Coffee was always available. The western omelette is not a typical western omelettes. It had bacon, sausage, zucchini, radish, celery and a little bit of green pepper. Not what I was expecting. Food was good otherwise. Next time I will order the items I want instead of assuming that the western omelette is the same as every other restaurant I've been to. read more

I heard this place has good, cheap breakfast so I decided to try it out. I checked out their website, saw they accepted debit cards, and decided on the Sunrise Breakfast. I called ahead so I could just pick it up and go. It's a cute little place on the corner of 5th and Columbia and has a good vibe, thought the place was pretty empty. I went to the register to pay, and she says it's $1.75 fee for using a debit card. I thought that was kind of odd, but I was hungry and had to get back to work so I figured I'd just pay it. Since my breakfast was only $4 anyway I figured it'd be ok. Then I realize that the reason there's a fee is that they're processing the transaction like an ATM. My bank charges $2 for non-network ATM transactions, in addition to their $1.75 fee. I was obviously a little upset about this and she says 'well, that's why I have the little notice right here that it charges $1.75.' When I explain to her that I'd never been in before, she says 'well, whoever told you about this place should have told you. Now you have cash for later.' They really should mention this little detail on their website. My $4 breakfast ended up costing almost $8 due to their misleading advertising. The breakfast wasn't even very good. The eggs were ok, but the sausage tasted funny and the hashbrowns were incredibly dry and overcooked tasting. You should go for the ambiance, not the food and definitely not the service. read more

Good basic breakfast food, not the best, service is fast and sometime friendly form the varied servers. Good place to people watch, an occasional lawyer on the way to court, or you might find someone yet to be tracked down and convicted. The local "colorfull" people sit and nurse a pot of coffee with rambling banter. I went here for breakfast with another person and I have to say, never again... We waited 15 minutes just get coffee ordered, another 5 minutes to get the coffee, another 15 minutes to order food and 40 MINUTES to get our food!!! In that whole time we only got our coffee refilled once. When we finally got our food, it was only partially edible. The bacon looked like it was rubber and an old purple grey color. The american fries were flat disks that were fried so long there was not potato left in the center and they were dark brown and crumbly... Just had breakfast there and somehow payed almost $13 for a ham, mushroom, Swiss omelette and hash browns! When I questioned what seemed like an ridiculous amount they said it was correct. Everything was an extra fee. Apparently an omelette comes plain with no hash browns, and then they've got the nerve to charge $2.80 for some over cooked potatoes! This is probably the worst meal I have ever had in my 62 years on this planet. I was visiting my son at school. We were looking for a place that was still serving breakfast at about 1 o'clock. The XXX was over a half hour wait so we just googled breakfast places and this place came up. I said cool a old time diner. How bad can it be. What a mistake. My son ordered 2 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 pancakes and chicken fried steak. I had 2 eggs sausage bacon pancakes. I knew something was wrong when they only brought out my sons pancakes. About 10 minutes later they bring our food ALL COLD. I MEAN COLD...the eggs sausage bacon everything. Then the waitress says they are making the chicken fried steak. She now brings this 5 min later. I couldn't pay to get a coffee refill. The waitresses were more worried about putting stuff on the caulk board and playing with a 4 foot salad buffet then taking care of customers. I was going to send both our meals back but you could see that they would of been totally insulted. Then wait another 20 minutes .Who knows what they would of done to our food back there. Its that type of place And then $9 dollars for 2 eggs 2 sausage 2 bacon and 2 pancakes? We ate half of our cold meal because that is all we could stand. DO NOT GO THERE read more

This is the only place I go to for breakfast when I'm at Purdue. Amazingly delicious home cooking in a diner that is obviously a local favorite. It can get busy during normal breakfasts rushes, but it is worth the wait, but, don't wait to be seated, it is a seat yourself place. read more

Worst service ever. Would give 0 star if was possible. Have given them two tries. The wait time and service was very poor both times. Last weekend we went in for breakfast. Had to sit at dirty table and wait for it to be bussed. Waitress finally took our order. Ordered simple breakfast -- eggs, bacon, toast. Waited 30 minutes. No food. No waitress. We tracked her down. She said we were next order up. Waited another 15 minutes. Still no food. Asked another waitress if she could find our waitress. 5 minutes later our waitress comes back. Says she'll check on our order. She comes back and says -- guess what -- that its the next order up. I ask how long that means. She says she'll go ask the cook. When she came back, she said it will be five or ten minutes. We finally gave up and left. Total time -- one hour from when we sat down to when we left without eating. On the way out another waitress at the check out was apologizing to a different table about how long the wait had been. read more

OMG, where to start. You probably could just go read all the one star reviews, taking the worst bits from each. But, I'll save you the effort. Got the menus and drinks fairly promptly, gave our orders, one lunch, fried chicken, one breakfast, Western omelet, and proceeded to wait. And after we waited, we waited some more. And some more waiting. When we got tired of waiting, we waited again. We kidded about starting a pool. A dollar a square, to guess when our food would finally appear. We watched others complain about the waiting. Watched others ask when their food was coming. Watched the wait staff walk by, carefully avoiding eye contact. But, no food. And no "I'm sorry we're having a problem.". Well we ultimately did get our order, but since my "Western" omelet was undercooked runny, and stuffed with what one reviewer called "whatever was leftover in the kitchen", we asked for to-go boxes and decided to pay up and leave. Fortunately, I had cash, since I was informed there would be a $1.75 charge for using plastic at their credit card machine that they call an ATM. All in all, an interesting experience, but not one I plan to repeat. Oh, and BTW, microwaving that "omelet", and I use the word loosely, did not make it edible. It went right in the trash. read more

This place should have ZERO stars. Yes, this place is a basic diner. No huge expectations walking in, but OMG, totally disgusting. First, a 45 minute wait for an omlette plate with sausage links (more on the links later) and 2 scrambled eggs with hashbrowns and 2 sausage patties -- at 11 am!. Several guests were seated after us and got served before us. Then, when the food did come, my girlfriend's sausage links were completely raw on the inside, literally uncooked. THEN, for the double OMG, the manager Rhea comes to the table, does not apologize, REACHES, YES REACHES onto my girlfriend's plate, and with her bare hand and GRABS THE SAUSAGE LINKS OFF THE PLATE to bring back to the kitchen to show the cook!!! Shock and awe!! Any my girlfriend still had a 1/2 plate to eat!!! The manager then does us the courtesy of removing the $1.80 cost of the sausage links!! LMAO. I went to the cashier to pay for the "food" and there was Rhea (you guessed it), working the cash register with her bare hands. I said it was the worst meal experience I had ever had, told her she should not grab food out of guests plates with her bare hands (or ever!) and was actually prepared to pay for our meal when she wrote N/C (no charge) on the two receipts and very matter of factly said "have a nice day." No apology, she just did not want me to cause a scene. This place is garbage. The waitress Amanda was very kind and apologetic but the rest of the "crew" should be working in a prison, not a diner.
