Two eggs toast home fries and OJ. Breakfast of champions. Done really well. In and out in a fairly good jiffy. No complaints here.

The service is absolutely horrible. We arrived and there were plenty of empty tables. We got coffee and menus. We placed our very simple eggs, meat and toast orders. The food arrived quickly and we were asked if we needed anything else. We asked for a glass of milk, Tabasco sauce and an extra plate for our toast. We got none of these items nor did we get coffee refills because we never saw the waitress again until we got up and asked for our check. We tried this place twice but won't be back. They really need new wait staff if they want to stay in business. read more

I'm not a shopper by nature, but I got hooked up for a Black Friday shopping adventure post-Turkey Day. Freeport was our starting point primarily because I'm working seasonally at one of Maine's most iconic employers and I needed to utilize my discount and do some shopping for myself and a few others. Freeport's a quaint little town centered around retail and was mobbed on Black Friday. Mobbed also means that the town's limited dining options for lunch were also maxed out, like a 45 minute wait at Johnny Rockets for a burger. Since burgers were what the better half and I were jonesing for, we left town with a question mark in our minds of where we could get one fairly close without driving all the way to Portland with our growling stomachs. Not to worry; a mere 1.7 miles south of town on historic U.S. Route One, we pulled into the Freeport Outlet Mall and walked into a quaint breakfast/lunch restaurant called the Sunrise Cafe. I've driven by this place countless times, but have never stopped. We both had the burgers we were craving. The Sunrise does a nice 1/4 burger on a basic white roll. They cook their burgers to perfection on a grill. Miss Mary had hers with pepper jack and sauteed onions, mine came with cheddar, along with lettuce and tomato. These were damn fine burgers. They also offer a nice selection of sides including some killer onion rings, homemade cole slaw (very good) and they brew their own iced tea. The Cafe has plenty of seating, so it's great if you have kiddies, or a larger party and you're looking for a non-chain place to eat at. There were several interesting specials on the board including both a fish and corn chowder, homemade muffins (they do breakfast all day, or at least until 2:00 pm when they close) and I'm sure their breakfast options are also solid. Glad we discovered this place and will be frequenting it again, for sure. I'd advise you to do the same the next time you're in Freeport and need a break from the shopping masses and are looking for a rock-solid breakfast/lunch option. read more

Took two of my five munchkins to Maine to visit family. We flew into Manchester, NH, earrrrrly in the morning, not realizing it was a two hour drive! Of course we flew Southwest, so we were starving. After passing several local dives, I saw a sign for Sunshine Café". I told my 7 year old we HAD to hold out until then because I had a feeling with a name like that, they'd have a great breakfast. Boy was I right! We felt like we were at home the second we walked through the door. We received a warm welcome, and hot coffee was steaming in my cup almost before I sat down! Eggs, bacon & toast were cooked to order shortly after; and the waitress even brought out brand new crayons and coloring books for the kids (and didn't give me a hard time when the new crayons inevitably got sticky). So we stopped here and we were blown away. Even though the diner was packed they quickly seated us and then made sure that they took our orders. 1 eggs benny and 1 ham and eggs later - we were full and very very happy. Went here for the first time a week ago with a friend for breakfast! We were friendly greeted and immediately served. The food was greatly priced and the food was your typical delicious breakfast food! The food came rather quickly and the service was once again friendly. However, my friend wanted hot sauce with her sausage and eggs and tried too get the attention of our waitress a few times. The waitress even made eye contact with us and seemed too have ignored. Eventually did get her attention and all was well. Keep in mind it wasn't busy and it's a small place so it seemed like it was on purpose. The place is super small and tables are very closer together so it felt awkward too have a conversation cause everyone in the room would be able too hear us. Was just a little uncomfortable. Will come here again and hope the mediocre service was a misunderstanding! read more

While food was tasty and prices decent service was lackluster at best: forgotten order items, no refills on "bottomless" coffees, and mixed up billing totals. We recently ate at this place while staying at the hotel across the street. We skipped the free breakfast buffet in hopes of enjoying a breakfast gem. We were disappointed. The service was sub-par and the food was mediocre. I would skip this place if possible. We started out with an unfriendly server who also had a hacking cough. We asked if they could scramble two eggs for our milk allergic child, and she declined because the eggs are premade. That's very unaccommodating in our experience. I ordered the eggs Benedict. They were bland. The hollandaise was slightly gritty. The home fries were completely flavorless. The server was disinterested and dismissive our whole visit. She made us feel unwelcome. There seemed to be a mix of locals and tourists there. Perhaps we just received the tourist treatment. read more

Stopped in for lunch, was promptly greated by a wonderful woman , whose name I didn't get because I am a dope... We were told of the daily specials, which included fresh Haddock Chowder. I know using the term "fresh" up here isn't necessary because anyone worth their weight in salt would never use the frozen crud, but it's just to point out to other folks the quality of the product...Anyway... we were brought two huge bowls of the Haddock Chowder that was loaded with huge pieces of haddock , creamy, seasoned perfectly... it was the start to an unbelievable meal... we were then served hot pastrami on the with a side a baked beans... seriously... why would anyone within a hundred mile radius eat at any chain restaurant?!?! The quality of the food was only topped by the wonderful service and conversation with our server and a couple locals. Please stop by and check this little place out... You won't be disappointed. stay way from the oatmeal (instant watery mush) and the pancakes were inedible (raw inside, tough outside),the worst i've ever had. probably not enough water in the Bisquick. Very disappointing. on the other hand coffee was ok and service good, although waitress wasn't curious about why the pancakes were hardly touched. probably afraid to ask. read more

My wife and I love to eat at Sunrise Cafe in Freeport, we usually frequently go on Friday mornings and get amazing service and the best breakfast. However we arrived there Friday 2/27 and found very few customers but NO clean tables. We sat at a dirty table received a few dirty looks from the only server that we saw. Finally we just got up and left. On any other Friday visit we would give this a 5 star rating but this server was not on her game and deffinetly gave the impression we were putting her out by being there. read more

Friendly service, great prices and delicious breakfast make this place a winner! While visiting Freeport, jump off the main street to the lower road down from the outlets to eat where all the locals eat. Place opens early and has a menu with all Maine local favorites cooked to order. Plus the locals are friendly and the staff takes care of you! Coffee is best around and the prices are even cheaper than the Dunkin Donuts up the street! I will return whenever I come to Freeport! Love it! read more

A small local spot we came across and it didn't let down! Sat down fast for a Saturday morning and waitress was quite pleasant. The food is tasty and of a good size. After a very disappointing dinner at another establishment the night before, my wife and I decided to try the Sunrise Cafe for breakfast. Wow. I truly loved it. Had buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy, scrambled eggs and corned beef hash on the side. I highly recommend this place. Another plus is that it's away from the craziness of the outlets, but right down the street from most of the Freeport hotels. So, before you head out to do your outlet mall shopping, please please please do yourself a favor and grab some breakfast at the Sunrise. read more

In the area again so decided to eat breakfast here, since it was so good last time. We walked in and grabbed one of the four empty tables. Our waitress came over quickly to take out order. There were two of us eating. We ordered at 9:06am. Boyfriend ordered two scrambled eggs, bacon and two plain pancakes. I had two over medium eggs, bacon, toast and one blueberry pancake. After waiting over half an hour, at 9:40 we decided if our food did not come by 9:45 we were leaving.... Our food arrived as we were looking for a few dollars to leave for our drinks. The eggs and bacon were great, however the toast was soggy, and the pancakes were not edible. They were hard, stiff and far to difficult to cut with a knife. Our waitress did apologize and take the pancakes off the bill, but after waiting almost 45 minutes for our food, in a restaurant that was not busy at all, it should have been delicious. Only had to wait roughly, 15 mins to sit. Their Texas french toast is unreal. French toast is the first thing i order at every new breakfast place i go. If you want great french toast sunrise cafe is the place to get it. Ask for their cinnamon streusel on the french toast for added awesomeness. :) read more

Horrible Service. We waited 15 Minutes after we got our menus and we had to get up to get our waitress. Biscuits and gravy tasted like soap. The pancakes were thick and tasted more like wonder bread. after waiting a half hour we had to stand and pretend to leave before the waitress would even bring us a check and they weren't even busy. Inferior quality. Cheap White bread and a grouchy waitress who told us she'd been a waitress for 33 years. Guess she didn't take any customer service classes. We went here clamfest weekend. They were busy but still attentive to us... I had the 2 eggs with sausage gravy on a homemade biscuit, with a side of grits. It was delicious and everything tasted homemade. My daughter had French toast, fruit and home fries. She liked everything which says a lot because she's a picky eater. Very unfriendly!!! I couldn't believe how unfriendly the staff was. It took over 20 minutes to make one scrambled egg!!!!! When I asked about it they said they were going in order. OTher diners that I have been to have no problem making one egg on the fly. Every diner that I have been too have been very accommodating to children, but not this one! Meanwhile my child had to wait starving. We had to order more food because the kids breakfast that we ordered was a very tiny portion. Not worth it! read more

I'm sorry to have to give this little diner a not-so-great review, especially since it had positive ratings on Yelp (which is why we chose to go there for breakfast yesterday and avoid the hotel's free continental breakfast -- kind of wish we'd just eaten at the hotel ... sigh). The service was friendly and we didn't wait long for a table, despite the fact that it was a Sunday morning on a holiday weekend. My husband's French toast was adequate, his scrambled eggs were fluffy and light, but the home fries were dry and unappealing. But OMG the Belgian waffles -- my son and I each ordered one -- were totally inedible. I'm not sure how you mess up waffles, but they were somehow tough on the outside and gritty and tasteless on the inside. I could barely cut into one, let alone actually eat it. My son picked his apart, and I left almost all of mine ... but the waitress didn't seem to notice at all. As another reviewer said, there aren't many other options nearby, unfortunately. Despite being a shopping mecca and the "town that LL Bean built," there are surprisingly few decent dining options in Freeport. We won't be back. read more
