Brunch is serious business in Augusta and after one visit to The Brunch House of Augusta I…read morecompletely understand why this place stays packed. While in town for the weekend my husband and I wanted brunch somewhere unique to Augusta instead of another chain restaurant, and after scrolling Yelp and seeing all the glowing reviews we decided to give this Black owned, family operated spot a try. I noticed online that you can make a reservation for a $20 fee that gets deducted from your check. At first I was a little surprised, but after seeing how busy this place is, it makes total sense. We decided to roll the dice without a reservation anyway. When we arrived on a Saturday morning there were already several people waiting outside. There isn't really an indoor waiting area, so the hospitable hostess took my name and phone number and kindly asked us to wait outside. Later I noticed the sign explaining the process. She quoted us a 40-minute wait, but thankfully we were seated in about half that time. Inside, the restaurant is quaint and cozy with a classic diner feel complete with counter seating and booths. The ambiance is casual and welcoming. If you have a larger party, there are a couple of outdoor tables that appear to accommodate around six people, but personally I think this spot is best enjoyed with a smaller group. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and kept everything moving smoothly despite the busy brunch crowd. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles while I went with the Garden City breakfast bowl loaded with veggies and home fries plus a salmon croquette on the side. Every single thing tasted homemade and full of flavor. This is what Southern comfort food is supposed to taste like. My husband said the chicken was seasoned well and fried perfectly, and the waffle paired with it beautifully. My breakfast bowl reminded me of the kind of breakfast my grandma used to make, comforting, flavorful, and cooked with care. Portion sizes were just right,  enough to leave satisfied without feeling miserable afterward. Prices were also very reasonable for the quality of food and service we received. Stellar customer service, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere. If I ever find myself back in Augusta, this will absolutely be one of my repeat stops.

We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and was told sorry there has been a mixup we don't have any tables. It will be 20 minutes. We could not wait as our son had an appointment that morning. So they told us we could sit outside at a folding table and get our drinks and place our order and they would sit us when the table was open. We said ok. After getting very hot and bitten over and over with gnats we walked up to hostess stand to see when our table would open. She was calling in a party to be seated. I asked why are they being seated when you told us next open table since we had a paid for reservation. She said ooops that was an error. She said but another table will Open in 5 minutes or so. We were so uncomfortable in the heat and gnats that we asked for a refund of our deposit. It seems as if The place is very mismanaged. The coffee is light brown water. To say we were disappointed is an understatement.

It was our first time there since we were visiting from out of town so they gave us a few recommendations and we ordered our food. We then sat down at a table since it was self seating. We didn't get our waters until after our food was served which is fine I understand they get busy. The food didn't take too long. We ordered 3 dishes. The Down home, the banana nut, and an omelet with turkey sausage and veggies. Our server came to our table and served us 3 dishes. Which dish was which was not explained to us and we thought all our food was out already because after she served us she said "does everything look good" or something along those lines. The banana nut was obvious but we weren't sure what was the omelet or the down home because there was a small side of an omelet waffle which was just egg. We didn't know if any of the dishes came with a side of an egg omelet or if the dish was served as a mistake. I then bring the small omelet dish to our server. I asked what the item was or it was included in what we order and she looked at the dish and took it away and brought it back to the kitchen. She then took a look at our receipt and didn't really say anything or explained to us what the small side of egg waffle was. Didn't answer any of my questions and I never saw that small side of egg waffle again. Shortly after then our down home dish was served to us. It was just a confusing situation that I wish could've been handled better by communicating with us. As for the food, the pictures online are a bit misleading and on the expensive side for the quality. All the photos were taken right after it was served to us. I'd only order the omelet again. A bit lacking with the ingredients and needs sauce. The down home was too doughy for my liking and it's a mix of salty and sweet from the batter and ingredients. The banana nut it was very crispy and came with powdered sugar and a side of the glaze. I didn't taste much banana or saw any nuts on/in the waffle.

Yelp nudged us toward New Moon Cafe, and while the signage from the street is minimal enough that we almost walked past it, we eventually found our way inside and were glad we did. At 12:30 on a Saturday the timing worked in our favor. We stepped right up to the counter with no queue at all, placed our order, and settled in. By the time our food arrived about fifteen minutes later, the line had grown to the point where people were waiting nearly that long just to order, which gave the whole place that lively, slightly chaotic weekend energy without ever feeling rushed. Mrs. K chose the smoked salmon bagel, which came out panini pressed, a small twist on a classic that she enjoyed. I am still keeping things keto, so the chef's salad with blue cheese was exactly what I needed, a generous portion that felt balanced and satisfying without pushing me off track. They offer plenty of coffee drinks and smoothie combinations, but we kept things simple and were perfectly happy with our choices. There is outdoor seating if that is your preference, and the whole experience had that relaxed, local charm that makes Augusta lunches feel unhurried even when the dining room is filling up around you.
