My husband and I found this gem of a restaurant on YELP and decided that the GLUTEN-FREE waffles were the perfect birthday brunch for me. I had the banana nut waffle (delicious!) with a side of bacon, my husband had a strawberry waffle with eggs, bacon, and hash browns. He cleaned his plate (he doesn't often do this), and my waffle was so big I couldn't finish! We thought the service staff were welcoming and attentive. I was surprised that there weren't more people at the restaurant, given that we went on a Monday and many places aren't open then. There was some road construction (and we aren't from Augusta) so it was slightly hard to find. But I'm glad we made it--I'm planning to take my daughters back tomorrow! read more

I recently visited Cafe on Eighth and loved the initial vibe--it's a small, cozy, Black family-owned spot with chill soft jazz playing in the background. Our server was incredibly sweet, and we felt genuinely welcomed from the moment we walked in. Because every dish is made from scratch to ensure freshness, be prepared for a bit of a wait. We also had to make some adjustments to our initial order because a few items were unavailable, but we still ended up with a solid meal. My girlfriend had the turkey bacon, the COE cakes (which are delicious hash browns), and the classic sweet waffles. I went with the beef quesadilla and the classic lemonade, which comes with free refills. The quesadilla was a great choice and the hash browns were very tasty. The waffle had a great flavor and was nice and soft, though it was served a bit cold. One thing to keep in mind is the presentation; the food is served on plastic plates with plastic silverware. While we tried not to let that affect our judgment since we were there for the food, presentation does eventually matter. Also, the temperature inside was a little warmer than I'd like--it was about 58 degrees outside, but that coolness definitely didn't translate to the dining room. It wasn't a dealbreaker, but it was noticeable. The most important thing to know before you go is that they only accept cash tips. It's a bit of a strange policy in this day and age since most people don't carry cash, especially when you're already using plasticware for the meal. They do have CashApp if you think to ask, but it's easy to forget if you aren't prepared. I really hope the staff is being taken care of if people forget their cash! The espresso did not taste like a typical espresso shot. It legit just tasted like lukewarm weak coffee. The latte tasted like straight milk. We visited Cafe on Eight with two adults and a child (about $20/person) and unfortunately left disappointed. The biggest issue was the wait -- 40 minutes for both our coffee and food. During that time, we noticed several other tables that arrived after us getting served before us, which was frustrating, especially with a 7-year-old in tow. When the food finally came, it didn't meet expectations. * The strawberry waffle did not look as anticipated. My 7-year-old summed it up best: "Well, it's better than Waffle House." * The low country waffle was bland and under-seasoned. * The sausage and gravy waffle was just okay. The only real standout was the cinnamon waffle with syrup, which was delicious -- honestly the best part of the meal. I'd only consider returning if I was specifically craving that one item. The atmosphere gives the vibe of a quick-service café, but the long wait times feel more like a fine-dining restaurant. To add to the disconnect, everything was served with disposable, plastic-wrapped utensils, and there weren't even salt and pepper shakers available for dine-in guests. There is not much happening to recommend eighth street other than Cafe on Eighth, but this waffle place offers a bit of what Augusta's downtown needs more of: a distinctive local business. Their waffle options include sweet and savory; most of the savory options are not vegetarian but an avocado toast waffle looked appealing. On this visit, however, I went sweet and indulged on a peach cobbler waffle. It was steaming hot and the browning of the waffle itself versus the luscious texture of peaches made for an excellent flavor combination before even considering the cream and mint on the side. They only do plastic forks and knives, which is not ideal both because of the trash but also because they're not great at cutting waffles. There should be ample parallel parking close to the restaurant as a result, so you shouldn't have to walk too far from your car, unlike most businesses right on Broad St. We ordered the Down Home, COE Quesadilla, Banana Nut, and Cinnamon Bun Waffles. We also ordered the Peanut Butter Waffle Cookie. We may have gone overboard with ordering... we're really big brunch people. We loved the Down Home and Quesadilla! They cooked the chicken and other toppings into the waffle, which is a super cool method that really integrates the flavors into the waffles. They tasted amazing!! I think the savory waffles are the stars of the show. The sweet waffles are somewhat standard and what I expected. The waffle cookie was more crumbly, thicker, and had a harder texture than the regular waffles, which might be someone's cup of tea, but not really mine. But for the savory waffles, I think this cafe has an innovative take on waffles that I have never seen before, which is so so refreshing. Ambiance is nice, but the music is a little too loud. That's ok though, because I thought it was a very cozy place to hang out. When I went, it was pretty close to closing time (around 2:30 on a Saturday), so my boyfriend and I had the entire place to ourselves, which was nice because we value our privacy. The seating within the restaurant can only seat up to 4 people per table, so this isn't the best place for large groups unless you're willing to move the chairs and tables around (and if the business owners are ok with it). Overall, this is a wonderful place that I will definitely visit again. You cannot beat the prices for the quality/uniqueness of the food, and you'd be helping a local business. Relatively new place so we thought we'd support. We got the strawberry waffle n the pecan waffle. Both were very good although the strawberry one could've used a lot more strawberries on top. Had 2 coffees which were nothing special. Servers were nice! It's a bright spot for breakfast in an otherwise run-down location. At first, it was hard to see if it was open and we got here around 9 AM. Suggest better lighted signage on the outside to bring attn to cars and to let folks know you're open. We decided to try some place new so of course we consulted Yelp. So glad we did because Cafe on Eighth is AMAZING! It's located in an older building downtown. The parking is a bit dicey since the city is currently doing road work and one side but we parked down the block and it was an easy walk. The building itself is somewhat narrow and there are six(?) tall tables along the wall. It's well decorated and very pleasant but the food is the real star. You order at the counter either from the regular menu or the daily specials. The gentlemen running the place are very nice and everything is made fresh to order. Even though there wasn't table service, they were very attentive and answered all the our questions. I ordered from the specials and got the patty melt. This was all the ingredients of a regular patty melt served on a delicious savory waffle with handmade waffle fries. It also included pickle chips and two sauces: a house dipping sauce and ketchup. My daughter got the Low Country Waffle which featured plump shrimp in a delicious sauce served on a grits waffle. She gave me a bit and it was tasty. We also got coffee which is served steaming hot instead of lukewarm like many places do. Really can't recommend this place enough! read more

Most of the tables seat 2 but they did tell me they have the next door set up for extra seating. I got the down home which has chicken and collard greens. They were inside the waffle. The waffle was nice and crispy it comes was a spicy dipping sauce and syrup. My friend got the shrimp and grits one which tasted great too. We were worried the grits on top would make the waffle soggy but it seemed to be ok. Really interested to try some of the sweet options since the savory ones were good. There was 4-5 tables with two seats each and a small lounge/hangout space in the back of the shop. The staff were super friendly and helpful while we were ordering. My friends and I got the strawberry waffle, hashbrown waffle, and omelette waffle. The strawberry and hashbrown waffle were pretty dense, but were pretty good overall, but the omelette waffle was by far my favorite. Nothing short of amazing...let me tell you why: THE FOOD: I ordered the low country. It's savory, spicy and screams, comfort food. When I got my coffee it was just plain black coffee, so it needed A LOT of dressing up! But I'm not going to hold that to them. I did realize after I sat down that they had syrups behind the counter. I wish she would have told me I could add the syrups but oh well. My friend ordered the iced coffee with oat milk and said that it was too sweet. We also had the tropical smoothie which was delicious. It happened to be free because they made too much of it (winning!). From what I remember, the server said it has papaya, coconut, pineapple and some other stuff in it. It was perfectly sweet with little chunks of coconut throughout. I actually hate coconut but didn't mind it at all in this smoothie. THE SERVICE: The staff were very friendly. We were greeted at the door and they even took our umbrellas for us and put them to the side. My friend and I arrived around 11:00 a.m. and we're chatting until closing around 3:00pm!
